hurricane center says maria has lost its major hurricane status...droppingto a category two storm for now - but only 'after' raking puerto rico. the entire island is without electricity......and there's serious flooding. being outside earlier was dangerous for everyone from reporters to first responders.. maria blew ashore this morning in puerto rico - with sustained winds of 155 miles an hour.....snapping trees and swamping low-lying areas. puerto rico's governor says the worst might still be ahead... puerto rico's govenor - there's a lot of flooding, a lot of infrastructure damage but the only thing that matters is that people stay safe.that we can save life and we will start the rebuilding process. people might think they've gone through the worst of it, but as we know with hurricanes, it's the flooding and heavy rains that tend to be the number one cause of death." maria is headed for the

(vicki) an east bay man killed in a brutal homicide and now police are releasing surveillance video connected with the crime. this as investigators and the man's family asking for help in tracking down the gunman. kron four's terisa estacio is in san francisco with more on the video and the suspects wanted in this case. i am here on the corner of 11th and folsom in san francisco - this is where 31 year old carlo tateo was walking along with some friends when a 3 people started harrassing some of women with carlo's group- carlo police say - asked them to stop, and that's when one pulled out a gun and fatally shot the east bay father.

greg mceachern, commander homicide sfpd "all homicides are a tragedy but this is senseless as well." san francisco police commander talking about the murder of this man, carlo tateo - the east bay father of this 2 year old girl, as well as a beloved family member. sonja tateo, mother of murder victim. "we just want this to be solved so the community is safer. police released this surveillance video connected to the crime it shows two suspects clearly - on the street moments before the murder. mceachern. one is a black male with a pink jacket on, the other also a black man. besides those two person's of interest - they are also looking for a female black woman. the night was june 18, around 2am. police say - carlo was with friends, enjoying a summer night in the city going to some clubs when those in the video started harassing women in carlo's group. mceachern. no provocation, just shot and tragically killing him. don appearson, uncle. he was a great kid, he had his life dedicated to helping young children. family members say tateo - loved being with his

oakland family and many friends. now police are hoping that someone will come forward and help solve his homicide. mceachern. morning at the 7-11 on redwood highway. police say the suspect was armed with a semi- automatic handgun as he demanded money from a store employee... and then ran away on foot. the suspect is a white man who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, grey sweatpants, black and white high-top shoes...and a maroon ski mask. ( grant ) tech gear has always been a target for thieves. laptops, tablets, phones... stolen. in some cases... snatched right out of the owners hands... in some pretty casual settings. and as kron4's haaziq madyun reports...here in the bay... it is seems to be happening more and more. people using laptops at starbucks beware there has been a rise in laptops being snatched from victims like this student, who asked not to reveal her identity. she say she was at a starbucks on lakeshore in oakland tuesday when two juveniles snatched her laptop really fast

(grant) at least one person is dead tonight.after a fire tore through an oakland apartment. it happened around four this morning on fairmount avenueat a four-story apartment complex. the victim was found in the stairwell...near their top- floor apartment. one other person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalationbut will be ok. crews were able to contain the fire however a unit suffered extensive water damageleaving two people without a home tonight. the cause of the fire is under investigation. two people were injured when a fire broke out in a duplex this early morning. (vicki) kron4's lydia pantazes explains how the residents of the duplex were able to make it to safety. in san jose 2 people were injured after a duplex fire shortly after 12 this morning. it happened on the 500 block of hazel del way. witnesses report seeing heavy black smoke spewing from the attic and windows of the duplex. once firefighters got to the scene, people who live inside had already gotten out. 2 people were taken to the hospital -- one with burns, the other with smoke inhalation both are in stable condition. in san jose, lydia pantazes, kron4 news. riley told his teachers there was a bomb in his backpack which would explode if he took it off. the boy was suspended from school for one day. according to the school... the boy was suspended for "intentionally engaging in harassment, threats or intimidation." jackson's parents complained... calling the suspension extreme. that's when the school changed the reason saying he "made terrorists threats toward school officials." looking into resident's windows. this is surveillance video of the man police are looking for. authorities say he was looking into the windows of residences on santa clara avenue near grand street. the resident's spotted the man between 11-pm and seven-am. police say the man is between 20 and 30 years-old with a light complexion and dark hair. he is around five-foot-seven and weighs between 160 and 180 pounds. (vicki) four inmates escaped from a mississippi prison... broke into a nearby business to grab some items... then slipped back into their jailhouse. police say last week...these three inmates ...broke out of their cell...jumped the fence...and walked less than a mile to a dollar general store. here is surveillance video from that night. officers say the trio stole cigarettes, phones, candy bars...and various items. now, instead of making a run for it... they sneaked back into the jail unnoticed.

(vicki) when it comes to therapy animals... we usually think of a dog or a cat... maybe a horse.(grant) but today... john muir hospital in walnut creek celebrated national rehabilitation awareness week with some exotic therapy animals. kron4's jeff pierce shows us some of the animals that were at a camel named marcello came to john muir hospital in walnut creek to help celebrate national rehablitation awareness week. she was just one of several exotic animals that have been trained in patient rehabilitation, he's an african fox called a fenic, they're actually found in the sahara. an african bush baby is not a monkey it is related to the lemurs from east africa this is scarlet and she's an

electis parrot from the solomen islands. john muir hospital has a well established pet therapy program but having exotic pets is a special moment for patients and staff. we have the regular pet therapy dogs but this one's a day when patients, and staff really, to enjoy exotic animals who are therapy trained. the animals come from lyon ranch an organization that rescues exotic animals and trains them. they're therapy animals and we go to hospitals, nursing homes, senior facillities. hospital staff and the animal handlers are convinced that animal therapy is effective. they had a patient that was in physical therapy and he hadn't been moving his hand and i handed scarlet to the patient and he reached out to take scarlet and the therapist was so happy and so excited, it was a very special thing to show that animals have a healing power. it helps bring the patients spirits up, it brings the whole hospital's spirits up. the big eyes they smile when they see it. those smiles are the best therapy. in walnut creek jeff pierce kron four news.

today's incident happened at around 7:15 this morning on east san fernando street near the engineering building. the victim was not physically injured. police have not yet released a description of the attacker. this comes just one day after a student was inappropriately touched at dudley moorhead hall. police have not yet made an arrest in that incident. (catherine) another bart employee was attacked at a station....and two people have been arrested in connection with the crime. it happened yesterday afternoon at the concord bart station. police say a 19-year-old woman went through the fare gates without paying and then battered the bart employee. police say she then called her boyfriend who came to the station and he 'also' beat up the employee. an officer stopped the man and there was a brief struggle. both suspects were eventually arrested on charges of battery and resisting arrest. just last week - two bart employees were attacked in separate incidents...at the rockridge station and the balboa park station. tennessee saved the lives of 96 children. a strong storm cause a section of the roof of the preschool to collapse. it was a terrifying experience for the the 100 children and staff inside the building. fire officials say they heard the building cracking. that's when the four staff members quickly rushed the children out of the building. they were able to get everyone to safety before a section of the roof caved in. people are dead after a major earthquake hit central mexico. it's the second major earthquake to hit mexico in the past two weeks.(steve) a seven-point-one earthquake hit yesterday. the quake toppled buildings, buckled roadways and knocked out power to millions of people. it leveled buildings as far away as the capital...mexico city...which is about 75-miles from the epicenter. thousands of people have been working to rescue victims trapped in rubble. president enrique pena nieto is calling it a new national emergency. (catherine) senators want to make sure that seniors are a top priority during emergency disaster response. this comes as the death toll at a florida nursing home has risen from eight to nine after hurricane irma.
