this morning on the kron 4 morning news... police in the east bay are trying to find a man caught on camera peeping into people's homes. the search for the person. ( tiffany ) and... the widow of a bay area skydiver who died after is parachute malfunctioned is speaking out. what she had to say this morning.. (james) also.. dramatic video of a rescue in mexico city in the wake of the major earthquake from earlier this week. video ahead. the kron 4 morning news starts right (james) good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm james fletcher. ( tiffany ) and i'm mcelroy. (james) temperatures this morning are

mostly in the 50s but a few spots in the higher elevations are showing upper 40s. it's a cooler start to the day. yesterday's cold front that brought scattered light showers has left the area. radar is tracking some moisture off the ukiah coast heading our direction, but the computer models predict it will stay over the ocean. this afternoon we're expecting a sunny and dry forecast. if there is a sprinkle, it will likely be confined to the immediate coast. highs this afternoon will be slightly cooler than yesterday. look for low 70s inland, upper 60s by the bay and low 60s at the coast. we start warming things up beginning tomorrow, gradually at first, then more dramatically by the weekend.

(tiffany) happening now... police in the east bay are trying to find a man caught on camera peeping into people's homes. this is happening in alameda. this is surveillance video of the man police are looking for this morning. he was caught looking into the windows of homes on santa clara avenue near grand street. he was spotted multiple times this month between 11:00 at night and 7:00 in the morning. most of the people in the neighborhood say the man took off as soon as he

was spotted. (tiffany) new this morning... a shelter-in-place has been lifted in richmond after a gas leak. it was first reported around 1:00 yesterday afternoon near harbour way and nevin avenue. it took crews nearly 7 hours to fix the leak. they say a commercial gas line was ruptured. the shelter- in-place was lifted just before 8:00 last night. ( james ) a story you will only see on kron four. the widow of a bay area skydiver who died after is parachute malfunctioned is speaking out this morning. 54-year-old brett hawton from alamo died last week after his parachute tangled. the accident happened at the lodi parachute center in acampo. his death is the third sky diving accident and the fourth death connected to the center in the past two years. brett's widow says she is concerned whether or not the proper safety procedures were followed.

( james ) police release new surveillance video showing the person wanted for murdering a bay area father. the video shows the moments before carlo tateo's murder back on june 18th in san francisco. police say these two men you see here had been hanging out on the corner of 11th and folsom before tateo showed up. they say the two men shot tateo in an unprovoked attack. detectives say they do have some leads int eh case but they are releasing the surveillance video to try and turn up more information about the shooters. (tiffany) happening now... rescue efforts are still underway for a girl burried in the rubble of her collapsed school in mexico city. this after a massive 7-point-1 magnitude earthquake killed hundreds. this is video of the rescue efforts as crews worked into the night. we showed you these rescue

efforts live yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. rescuers still trying to pick away the unstable debris early this morning. the girl was found alive yesterday. she has now been trapped for more nearly 48 hours. right now crews all across central mexico are still sifting through rubble trying to find survivors. overnight the death toll has risen to 245 people. and that number is still expected to climb. and here in the bay area... many mexican americans are still waiting to hear from their family and friends. and many are turning to social media to find out if they are safe. ( james ) and breaking overnight... hurricane maria has regained strength and is now a category 3 storm. (tiffany) right now the storm is carrying winds of 115 miles per hour as it moves towards the dominican republic. ( james ) and now we are getting a look at the damage done in puerto rico. maria made landfall on that island as a category 4 storm. and you can see just how much flooding is left behind. the storm knocking out power to the entire island and puerto rican officials say it may be months before power is back on for everybody. maria has wreaked havoc on the caribbean over the last few days causing devastating damage to dominica... the virgin islands and now puerto rico. at least 14 people have died in the storm so far. now maria is moving towards the turks and caicos which was devastated by hurricane irma less than two weeks ago. (tiffany) a warning this morning if you use your laptop at a coffee shop. police say there has been a rise in thefts in the east bay.

the most recent theft happened tuesday on lakeshore avenue in oakland. a woman says her laptop was taken by two kids before she could even react. police in alameda also say they have had several similar thefts reported. they say most of the thefts are happening at starbucks locations. in most of the cases the thieves are juveniles. now... police in alameda are increasing patrols around starbucks locations to try and prevent future robberies. (tiffany) and we have seen one laptop snatch and grab turn deadly... last month -- local musician dave deporis was at a telegraph avenue coffee shop in oakland.. when a thief grabbed his laptop he chased the thief to a car -- and was dragged to his death. no arrests have been in that case. ( james ) three women have been arrested.. accused of leading police on a long chase that ended in the east bay. take a look. a police officer was seriously injured in a collision... that happened during the chase.

you can see the damage done to the car. police say the chase started in hollister... and ended in hayward. c-h-p arrested 20-year-old chartanae lovely21-year-old davida fortenbelowand 22-year- old laje ford. they were booked on charges of grand theft, conspiracy to commit a crime, and destruction of evidence. (tiffany) the city of oakland becomes the latest bay area city to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products to minors. the city council voted unanimously to approve the ban. it is similar to a recent bans put in place in san francisco... berkeley... santa clara county and palo alto. the ban in oakland will go into effect in the middle of next year. ( james ) and happening tonight.. the san francisco 49ers will host the los angels rams at levi's stadium for thursday night football. the niners are still looking for their first win and their first touchdown of the season. there are still tickets available for tonight's game and you can get them pretty

( james ) now for a story you'll see only on kron4... more and more people especially in san francisco are renting out their places on a short term basis. but are they taking the precautions necessary to protect themselves? (tiffany) as kron4's dan kerman reports one woman says she did not. and now she has been ripped off. sothe was very skilled, he knew what he was doing.san francisco homeowner pamela kelley is talking about a man she rented her flat to for 4 nights last wednesday. when she returned home sunday afternoon, three of her deadbolted owners closets were wide open sot pamela kelley/ripped off by renter 16-24i thought my belongings were safe and secure and to come home to find everything missing and gone was absolutely devastating.kelley says in addition to stealing clothing and purses, the renter also pried open her safe and stole 68-thousand dollars worth of jewelrysothe

also got a couple of my mother's rings which were very sentimental to me.kelley says this was a same day last minute rental, which prevented her from checking references. it's one of the lessons she's learned the hard waysotif you want to keep clothes in your owners closets do it at a minimum, but do not keep anything in your home of value kelley says in addition to the theft she found drug paraphernalia on the bed, as well as blood police gathered that evidence sunday on tuesday she discovered a small stamp size photo of the renter, but is still waiting for a police detective to contact hersoti'm shocked, in a million years i never thought it would take this long to receive a phone call from the person assigned to the case, i feel like this is what my tax dollars are going, this is not considered important when someone represents themselves to be somebody else and they come and violate and rob from you making matters worse, kelley

also found out because this was a short term rental her insurance doesn't cover the theft. standup dan kerman/sf 141-151kelley says she will rent again, but only to couples, families or groups, no last minute same day rentals, and never without a thorough check of references. she's also getting her place outfitted with security cameras. in sf, dan kerman kron 4 news.159/std (tiffany) police are searching for the gunman who shot a man in the leg during an armed robbery near vacaville. it happened tuesday morning between 2 and 6 a-m. the shooting victim told police he and another person were tending property in the area of gates canyon road west of vacaville when two masked gunmen bound them with zip ties and stole their cell phones and cash. the men were seen leaving the area in a late 90's or early 2000's light colored ford f-150. police say the victims were tending two separate areas of the property. described

as a large field and potential marijuana grow. the victim who was shot was treated and released. (tiffany) in south san francisco... police are trying to identify a driver who hit and injured a 65-year-old woman. it happened tuesday night just before 9:30. the victim was crossing the street at westborough and gellert boulevards when the they were hit by what was described as a late-model silver hatchback. the crash was captured on video by a bus passing through the area. police said the driver stopped briefly before fleeing east towards interstate 280. the victim suffered injuries that were not thought to be life threatening. ( james ) police are looking for an armed man who robbed from a seven-eleven store in petaluma. here is a picture of who police are now searching for... it happened at around 1:25 yesterday morning at the seven-eleven on old redwood highway. police say the man came in armed with a gun and demanded money from a store employee...he then ran

off. police did not say if the employee was injured in the incident. ( james ) happening today... jose, which has weakened to a tropical storm will bring heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and strong winds to the new england coast today and over the next few days. places like nantucket island and martha's vineyard are expected to be hit hard by jose. and beach erosion is a concern throughout massachusetts. people who live in the area say they are doing everything they can now to prepare for when jose hits. ( james ) as for hurricane maria... it has strengthened and regained major hurricane status this morning as it heads away from puerto rico and towards the dominican republic and turks and caicos. maria has already caused significant damage throughout the caribbean. especially

puerto rico, where the governor says it could take months to fully restore power. ( james ) senators want to make sure that seniors are a top priority during emergency disaster response. this comes as the death toll at a florida nursing home has risen from eight to nine after hurricane irma. (tiffany) the senate committee on aging held a hearing to address those deaths. anna wiernicki has more on what senators are doing to try and make sure this never happens again. --take pkg-anna wiernicki: pictures of destruction and devastation flooded the internet as hurricane harvey and irma tore through the southnats pop - "oh my"anna wiernicki: but it was pictures like this one--showing elderly people in a texas nursing home sitting in waist deep water áand the deaths of nine seniors in florida--that democratic senator bob casey says should have been prevented.bob caseyu.s. senator, d-patake cg @ 0:21we need to learn from these tragedies and we need to commit ourselves to the goal

( james ) several synagogues are increasing security around their sanctuaries after several national and local incidents of anti-semitism. this as the jewish community across the bay area and around the world observe the first of the high holy holidays. one east bay synagogue has hired additional security guards for the holidays to ensure things go peacefully. it has also

installed new security cameras out of an abundance of caution. just last month, alameda police say a man used rocks to break the windows at temple israel of alameda. the f-b-i is involved in that incident, which is being investigated as a hate crime. (tiffany) another bart employee was attacked at a station. and two people have been arrested in connection with the crime. it happened tuesday afternoon at the concord bart station. police say a 19-year-old woman went through the fare gates without paying and then battered the bart employee. police say she then called her boyfriend who came to the station and he 'also' beat up the employee. an officer stopped the man and there was a brief struggle. the couple was eventually arrested on charges of battery and resisting arrest. just last week - two bart employees were attacked in separate incidents...at the rockridge station and the balboa park station. (tiffany) the man arrested for violently assaulting two san leandro police officers with his car was charged in

court. 57-year-old terry gordon was arraigned yesterday for attempted murder and two counts of assault on a peace officer with great bodily injury. it all happened sunday night outside the safeway store on lewelling boulevard in san leandro. officers were called to the store because of reports of a shoplifter. police say when the officers went to arrest gordon he managed to run off to a car. and that's when they say he hit the gas. striking the two officers. ( james ) hapening now... police are on the hunt for the person connected to an armed robbery that happened at a danville walgreens. it happened around eight yesterday morning at the walgreens on san ramon valley boulevard. the person was wearing a surgical mask and holding a gun, he entered the store and went straight to the store's pharmacy. he demanded prescription pills then left the scene. no one was hurt. ( james ) for the second time in two days a person is inappropriately touched on a south bay college campus. the incidents happened at san jose state university. yesterday's incident happened at around 7:15- in morning on

east san fernando street near the engineering building. the victim was not physically injured. police have not yet released a description of the attacker. this comes just a day after a student was inappropriately touched at dudley moorhead hall. police have not yet made an arrest in that incident. (tiffany) in the north bay... drivers may soon be paying to drive on highway 37. this comes as transportation officials say turning the highway into a toll road may be necessary to raise money for the rebuilding of it highway 37 suffered major flooding last winter when heavey rains closed it for weeks at a time. a study by u-c davis projects it will be 6 feet underwater by 20-50. officials say improvments must be done. and turning highway 37 into a toll road or adding a toll bridge to pay for the project is an option on the table. but officials want all highway 37 commuters to know that nothing has been decided yet. are advising people to be on alert after a possible mountain lion sighting. it happened around 10-30 monday night on de anza boulevard near los altos drive. a woman says she was sitting in her car in the cyrstal springs shopping center when she saw a large animal which she believes is a mountain lion. she says it walked into the street and then continued into brush. police searched the area but did not find the mountain lion. authorities advise people to avoid entering wooded areas during dawn, dusk and at night. that is when the cats are most active.

button still will not make your car invisible nats: ambiance just on olsen drive alone there were so many people stopping in the fire lane commonly known as the red zone . despite the no stopping signs posted throughout this driver was parked for more than 10 minutes with her park anywhere lights blinking at one point she runs into lisa's tea treasure you might know this but park anywhere lights are contagious once activated other cars are magically attracted to the host car and then you have more nats: ambiance this driver needed to pick up some packages from the wine shop ...so he double parked as well now here is something funny this white van backing out of the loading dock nats; ambiance well, he really wanted to go to the parking garage he just saw the forst opening and went for it.. and yes there is plenty of parking in the garage infact that where i parked . just had to driver around for a bit nats: ambiance you just have to look for it ..one visitor had this to say about the drivers her it's almost like living in san francisco but i don't live in san

the person who grabbed a 15-year-old girl's hand and threatened her. it happened in the unincorporated community of north fair oaks last weekend. the person walked up to the girl as she was walking in the area of the 2500 block of middlefield road. he told her that something bad was going to happen to her. then he grabbed her hand and kept her from walking away. the victim was eventually able to pull away and ran off. (tiffany) belmont police are now releasing photos of the woman the say stole credit cards from a teacher's purse last month. it happened at central elementary school on middle road in belmont. authorities say the woman told school staff she was picking up her child. according to the teacher the woman took the

credit cards from her purse which was inside a file cabinet in her classroom. police say she is a black woman in her 30s... about five foot eight with long, braided hair. she was wearing a blue shirt, jeans and a baseball cap. (tiffany) california is suing the trump administration over its plan to build a wall along the country's border with mexico. the lawsuit was filed early yesterday by california's attorney general xavier becerra (hah-vee-air bah-sehr'-ah) advocacy groups also filed a lawsuit against the trump administration last week regarding the border wall. becerra argues that the federal government is overstepping its authority by waiving environmental reviews and other laws. the trump administration recently waived environmental reviews on a 15- mile stretch in san diego where wall prototypes will be constructed. ( james ) a warning to drivers.... fiat-chrysler is recalling one if its minivans after discovering that one of the second-row seat belts might unbuckle. 50-thousand pacifica vans from

the 20-17 and 20-18 model years are being recalled. all have the eight-person seating option. the company says that during "sporting driving" mode, the center buckled could hit the release botton on the left buckle causing it to unlatch. the company says it does not know of any crashes or injuries from the problem. the recall is expected to start oct. 20. until repairs are made, chrysler is advising owners not to use the second-row center seat if other passengers are in that row. (tiffany @ landing) surf's up in a place you might not expect. the central valley. some of the best surfers in the world are hitting the waves... and they're doing it hundreds of miles away from the beach. it's all happening in a small city about thirty minutes south of fresno. connie tran shows us how it's possible. it's not something you see everyday, since we're so far

from the ocean. but, professional surfer kelly slater has brought the sport of surfing to the central valley.on tuesday, he and dozens of other professional surfers were at slater's surf ranch in lemoore to test his man-made wave pool. slater opened up the innovative pool two years ago, and it has brought a lot of attention to the small agricultural town. morgan williamson is a surfer from dana point. he also works for the surf magazine stab, but wasn't allowed into the private event. so instead, he and his friends rented a cherry picker to get a birds eye view of the surfing event. only see on kron four. the widow of a bay area skydiver who died after is parachute malfunctioned is speaking out this morning. 54-year-old brett hawton from alamo died last week after his parachute tangled. the accident happened at the lodi parachute center in acampo. his death is the third sky diving accident and the fourth death connected to the center in the past two years. brett's widow says she is concerned whether or not the proper safety procedures followed. ( darya ) the f-a-a is investigating whether the parachute was properly packed. back on june 18th in san francisco. police say these two men you see here had been hanging out on the corner of 11th and folsom before tateo showed up. they say the two men shot tateo in an unprovoked attack. detectives are releasing the surveillance video to try and turn up more information about the shooters. ( mark ) and breaking overnight... hurricane maria has regained strength and is now a category 3 storm.( darya ) right now the storm is carrying winds of 115 miles per hour as it moves towards the dominican republic.( mark ) and now we are getting a look at the damage done in puerto rico. maria made landfall on that island as a category 4 storm. and you can see just how much flooding is left behind. the storm knocked out power to the entire island. maria has wreaked havoc on the caribbean over the last few days causing devastating damage to dominica... the virgin islands and now puerto rico. at least 14 people have died in the storm. now maria is moving towards the turks and caicos which was devastated by

hurricane irma less than two weeks ago. ( mark ) a warning if you use your laptop at a coffee shop. police say there has been a rise in thefts in the east bay. the most recent theft happened tuesday on lakeshore avenue in oakland. a woman says her laptop was taken by two teenagers. police in alameda also say they have had several similar thefts reported. they say most of the thefts are happening at starbucks locations. in most of the cases the thieves are juveniles. now... police in alameda are increasing patrols around starbucks locations to try and prevent future robberies. ( mark ) one laptop snatch and grab recently turned deadly. last month -- local musician dave deporis was at a telegraph avenue coffee shop in oakland.. when a thief grabbed his laptop. he chased the thief to a car -- and was dragged to his death. no arrests have been in that case. ( darya ) three women have been arrested for leading police on a long chase that ended in the east bay. a police officer was seriously injured in a crash that happened during the chase.

police are searching for the gunman who shot a man during an armed robbery near vacaville. the victim told police that he and another person were in the area of gates canyon road west of vacaville tuesday morning when two masked gunmen bound them with zip ties and stole their cell phones and cash. the men were seen leaving the area in a late 90s or early 2000s light colored ford f-150. the victim was not seriously hurt. ( darya ) and in south san francisco... police are looking for the driver who hit and injured a 65-year-old woman tuesday night. the victim was crossing the

running over two san leandro police officers with his car was charged in court. 57-year-old terry gordon was arraigned yesterday for attempted murder and two counts of assault on a peace officer with great bodily injury. the incident happened sunday night outside the safeway store on lewelling boulevard in san leandro. officers were called to the store because of reports of a shoplifter. police say when the officers went to arrest gornon he managed to run off to a car. and that's when they say he hit the gas... hitting the two officers. ( darya ) police are releasing photos of a woman they say stole credit cards from a teacher's purse at an elementary school. it happened at central elementary school on middle road in belmont. police say the woman told school staff she was picking up her child. according to the teacher, the woman took the credit cards from her purse which was inside a file cabinet in her classroom. it is not clear if the woman even had a child at the school. ( mark ) nine people are dead after a florida nursing home lost its air conditioning during hurricane irma. and this morning lawmakers are trying to make sure seniors are a top priority during emergency disaster response. the senate committee on aging held a hearing to address those deaths. they are now working on legislation that would help the elderly and make sure law enforcement does what they can to get them evacuated. right now it's not clear if the nursing home will face criminal charges. prosecutors may not be able to prove that the staff knew their actions would result in death. ( darya ) california is suing the trump administration over its plan to build a wall along the country's border with mexico. the lawsuit was filed early yesterday by california's attorney general xavier becerra. advocacy groups also filed a lawsuit against the trump administration last week regarding the border wall. attorney general becerra argues that the federal

( mark ) children at one children's hospital in san diego now have a luxorious way of getting around. the hospital launched a new program that uses remote control cars to move children around the hospital. they can choose from a lamborghini, a mercedes and a b-m-w. the cars were donated by law enforcement agencies in san diego. the group that made the donation says it wanted to make hospital stays a little less scary for children.

the storm. now maria is moving towards the turks and caicos which was devastated by hurricane irma less than two weeks ago. ( mark ) a warning if you use your laptop at a coffee shop. police say there has been a rise in thefts in the east bay. the most recent theft happened tuesday on lakeshore avenue in oakland. a woman says her laptop was taken by two teenagers. police in alameda also say they have had several similar thefts reported. they say most of the thefts are happening at starbucks locations. in most of the cases the thieves are juveniles. now... police in alameda are increasing patrols around starbucks locations to try and prevent future robberies. ( mark ) one laptop snatch and grab recently turned deadly. last month -- local musician dave deporis was at a telegraph avenue coffee shop in oakland.. when a thief grabbed his laptop. he chased the thief to a car -- and was dragged to his death. no arrests have been in that case. ( darya ) three women have been arrested women have been arrested for leading police on a long chase that ended in the

( mark ) the city of oakland becomes the latest bay area city to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products. the city council voted unanimously to approve the ban. it is similar to a recent bans put in place in san francisco... berkeley... santa clara county and palo alto. people supporting the new law see as a way to stop tobacco companies from getting children and young people

( mark ) happening now... police are searching for the gunman who shot a man during an armed robbery near vacaville. the victim told police that he and another person were in the area of gates canyon road west of vacaville tuesday morning when two masked gunmen bound them with zip ties and stole their cell phones and cash. the men were seen leaving the area in a late 90s or early 2000s light colored ford f-150. the victim was not seriously hurt. ( mark ) the equifax breach just seems to be getting worse. it turns out that hackers broke into the credit-score generating company's computer systems back in march. that's two months earlier than the company first said it happened. information about the breach and when it occurred is in a report in the wall street journal. if it's true... hackers would have had additional time to root around in equifax's servers without being detected -- and eventually gain access to the data of 143 million americans. ( darya ) happening now... bart police are looking for two men who attacked another man at the west oakland bart station. police say the attackers tried to take the victim's cell phone. the man was able to defend himself and the attackers eventually took off. they are still on the loose this morning. the victim was not seriously injured. ( darya ) two people are under arrest for attacking a bart employee at an east bay station. it happened at the concord bart station. police say a 19-year-old woman went through the fare gates without paying and then attacked a bart employee. police say she then called her boyfriend who came to the station and he also beat up the employee. an officer stopped the man and there was a brief struggle. the couple was arrested on charges of battery and resisting arrest. just last week - two bart employees were

police are looking for an armed man who robbed a danville walgreens. it happened yesterday morning at the walgreens on san ramon valley boulevard. the thief was wearing a surgical mask and holding a gun. he entered the store and went straight to the store's pharmacy. he demanded prescription pills. he was able to get away before police could get there. no one was hurt. ( darya ) for the second time in two days a person is inappropriately touched at san jose state university. we told you about the first incident yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. the latest one happened yesterday morning on east san fernando street near the engineering building. the victim was not physically injured. police have not yet released a description of the attacker. this comes just a day after a student was innappropraitely touched at dudley moorhead hall. police have not said if the two incidents are connected. bay... drivers may soon be paying to drive on highway 37. this comes as officials say turning the highway into a toll road may be necessary to raise money to rebuild it. highway 37 suffered major flooding last winter when heavey rains closed it for weeks at time. a study by u-c davis projects the highway will be 6 feet underwater by the year 20-50. officials say improvements must be made. turning highway 37 into a toll road or adding a toll bridge to pay for the project is being considered. ( mark ) san mateo police are telling people to be on alert after a possible mountain lion sighting. a woman says she was sitting in her car in the crystal springs shopping center when she saw a large animal which she believes was a mountain lion. she says it walked into the street and then continued into the brush. police searched the area but did not find it. police say people should avoid entering wooded areas during dawn, dusk and at night. that is when the mountain lions are most active.
