(james) our top story this morning. hundreds of n-f-l players and owners protested by kneeling or skipping pregame ceremonies yesterday in response to president trump's calls to fire players who didn't stand for the national anthem.(robin) and not far from the white house, the majority of the oakland raiders sat on the bench during the anthem... before their game in washington. kron 4's ella so-gomonian went to walnut creek to get reaction from raiders fans. some sat down, other knelt and many linked arms on sunday night.the oakland raiders were

one of several nfl teams choosing to protest in this way against perceived racial injustice in america.the decision to sit out the tradition comes at the heels of president donald trump's criticism of the protest and push for the league to fire players who do so.here at walnut creek's stadium pub there was fan support.sot: raiders fan// "i came to this country when i was ten years old and i am grateful for all the opportunities it has given me. i have the flag right here (points to hat) but of course its not perfect and if players have to take a knee to make a change for the better than i am all for it."sot: raiders fan// "people have a belief and you have to accept it. you gotta let it go. i'm not going to judge anybody. we're lucky to be in this country we should be able to do what we want to do."one fan at the pub shook her head in disapproval as she watched on.she told me off camera the players are being disrespectful but admits

she prefers this type of protest rather than violent ones out on the streets. it seems raider owner mark davis agrees. in a statement released sunday he said i can no longer ask our team to not say something while they are in raiders uniform. the only thing i ask them to do is to do it with class do it with pride.and fans say using the widely watched game as a platform is an effective way to get more eyes on their cause. sot: raiders fan// "it's a perfect opportunity to do it during the games. if they just do it behind the camera not a lot of people are going to see it, it's not going to make a big difference. do it on a big stage." sunday. the rookie became the first major league baseball player to kneel ... as part of the protest movement. teammate and cal alum mark can-ah stood behind maxwell and put his hand on his shoulder in a show of solidarity. maxwell said he plans to continue the protest. (james) even after organizers cancelled "berkeley free speech week".. conservative commentator milo yiannopoulos still came to campus for a brief speech yesterday. kron four's spencer blake was there as it happened. as promised, milo as promised, milo yiannopoulos arrived at sproul plaza to address an audience sunday at noon. protesters who didn't want him to share his message showed up, too, linking arms at one point to make a human barricade."thank you. how are you all? very disappointing protester turnout today."both campus police and berkeley p-d clearly had a tight grip on things, with preparations that must have taken hours - barricades preventing entry

philippe djegal spoke with neighbors who heard the gunshots. (philippe)neighbor- "gunshots are louder than you think they are, and they were right outside my window." a frightening three hours for a neighbor who does not want to be identified.neighbor- "my first worry was for the family and the police officers, and i don't if this man was mentally ill or what was wrong, but i don't know, it seemed like, like a really bad situation from the get go." at around 11-30 saturday night on nob hill... san francisco police officers stopped by an apartment on salmon street near pacific avenue... where investigators say a man was holding his wife and two young children hostage. shortly after they arrived, police say the officers heard a gunshot go off inside. and, at that point, negotiators kept a constant dialogue with the man, while police surrounded the place. neighbor- "they were waiting for a very long time, it seemed like. um, trying to talk to the guy. this was clearly the last resort." he's refering to what happened just before three in the morning. after police say

officers heard another gunshot go off in the apartment... the tactical team stormed in and opened fire on the suspect... who was then taken to a hospital where he died. his wife, five and 11-year old children were not harmed.kyle martin/neighbor- "yeah, pretty intense." the gunfire woke neighbor kyle martin up.kyle martin/neighbo r- "i'm sure they did, uh, did what was necessary to keep people safe." and, as it does with every officer- involved shooting... within 10 days, the san francisco police department... is going to hold a town hall meeting for the public... detailing what happened. in san francisco, philippe djegal, kron four news. (robin) president trump issued a new order revising his controversial travel ban... he tweeted -- quote -- "making america safe is my number one priority. we will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet." (robin) with his new order -- trump added three countries to the restricted list, and indefinitely banned almost all travel to the united states from seven countries. most citizens of iran, libya,

syria, yemen, somalia, and now north korea and chad will be banned from entering the united states. citizens of iraq -- and now certain groups of people from venezuela will face higher levels of scrutiny. the new rules are set to go into effect on october 18-th. (robin) senator susan collins of maine says it's a tall order to imagine herself voting for the latest g-o-p healthcare bill. the measure would repeal much of the affordable care act and shift money and power to the states. senator collins said her concerns include the bill's impact on medicaid and on people with pre-existing conditions. if she comes out against the proposal, that would be the nail in the coffin for the bill. republicans can not lose more than two votes if they want to pass the bill before the deadline at the end of the month. ted cruz says right now, he doesn't back the bill. and senators john mccain and rand paul have announced their opposition. rescue missions will continue for at least "two more weeks" to find any survivors of tuesday's earthquake. but the heartbreak continues as search teams locate more bodies than survivors. ivan watson shares the latest updates from the scene of an ongoing operation to save as many people as possible. some workers at mexico city's police headquarters are refusing to return to work at the downtown building because of suspected structural damage. administrative worker mariana ramirez said sunday that she plans to go as far as the sidewalk outside monday morning, but will not enter. ramirez was on the fourth floor of the 12-story building when the earthquake hit tuesday. she says the shaking was "terrible, terrible" and hasn't been back to work since the quake.ramirez and others are pushing a petition on change.org that calls for city authorities to commission an independent evaluation of the building that would be shared with its employees.she says so far bosses are saying the building is fine. but photos shared by employees show a buckled floor and what appears to be a severed support column. half of the cupola of an historic church in mexico city has fallen after sustaining damage during the magnitude 7.1 quake that hit central

mexico this week.the dome of the our lady of angels church featuring stained glass from germany split in two and half collapsed sunday afternoon.the cupola was left with severe cracks after tuesday's quake and engineers had told church leaders it was likely to collapse.according to the archdiocese of mexico, more than 150 religious buildings in central mexico were damaged during tuesday's quake. most of that damage occurred in puebla state, where the quake was centered.neighbors and residents of a collapsed apartment building on the south side of mexico city have obtained an injunction from a judge that says rescue efforts must continue for five more days.a spokesman for the building's residents and neighbors said sunday that the injunction was obtained saturday night, so four days remain. (robin) in the east bay... another mountain lion has been spotted... two hikers say they were on a trail near grizzly peak's sign post when they saw the large cat. the hikers say the cougar was about 75 feet away from them. wildlife experts advise people to avoid these areas at dawn, dusk and during the night. that is when mountain lions are most active. if you do come across one... do not run away. instead face it... make yourself look big by waving your arms, throwing rocks and making loud noises. explorer then he turned around rolled her over and shot her in the face.>(james) nashville police say emanuel samson first killed a 39 year old year old woman as she walked to her car in the parking lot of the burnette chapel church of christ. then he walked into the sanctuary of that church and opened fire.... shooting six others and pistol whipping someone. as all this was going on police say a 22- year-old usher confronted the gunman and accidentally shot himself as the two struggled. a young boy was inside the church and described what he saw and heard. ( mark ) president trump issues a new order revising his controversial travel ban. the new restrictions limit travel from eight countries. starting next month, new restrictions go into place for some citizens of chad, iran, libya, somalia, syria, yemen, venezuela and north korea. these new restrictions replace portions of the president's previous travel ban that expired yesterday. the new restrictions vary slightly

police say emanuel samson shot and killed a woman in a church parking lot just outside of nashville. then he walked inside the church and shot 6 other people... all of whom are still in the hospital this morning. the gunman also pistol whipped a person who tried to fight back. samson is charged with murder and attempted murder. ( darya ) and one of the survivors from that shooting is a 10-year-old boy. he was in a different room of the church when he heard the shots fired and that is when he decided he needed to do something to protect the people in the room with him. ( darya ) the 10-year-old boy was reunited with his mother a short time later. he was

( mark ) people in puerto rico are beginning to assess the damage left behind by hurricane maria. several gas stations and hospitals are still underwater this morning. at least 10 people are dead. many people are without clean and running water. much of the u-s territory remains without power. the governor of puerto rico says it will cost eight billion dollars to recover and that part of the island could be without power for months. ( mark ) an inmate is dead and several others hurt following a riot at the california men's colony prison in san louis obispo county. authorities say more than 160 inmates were involved. fights broke out in the medium- security yard sunday morning. the prison was put on lockdown while guards broke up the riot. police say a 25-year-old inmate severing time for burglary was killed. several other inmates have stab wounds. it's not clear what sparked the riot. major hot no major hot spots. bay bridge wb 80 is less then 30 min from the maze to sf. t ( mark ) a man has died after police shot him inside a home in san francisco. police say the man was holding his wife and two young children hostage. it happened saturday night on salmon street near pacific avenue. when officers arrived they say they heard yelling inside the apartment. for several hours, negotiators kept talking with the man while police surrounded the home. then officers say they heard a gun shot go off. the tactical team stormed in and opened fire on the man. he was then taken to a hospital where he died.

( mark ) and new this morning... police in santa cruz county are warning people about a new phone scam. people are getting calls from somebody pretending to be from the sheriff's office. the caller tells the victim that they have to pay a fine in order to avoid an arrest warrant for missing jury duty. in some cases the victims were asked for as much as one thousand dollars. police say they will never ask for money or personal information over the phone. ( darya ) and happening tomorrow... students and staff at one south bay school are planning a march in defense of undocumented immigrants protected by the daca program. the trump administration ended the program earlier this month. it provides protection for undocumented immigrants brought to the u-s as children. staff and students from los altos high school will hold a march from los alto high school to eagle park in mountain view. the march is set to begin at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and could disrupt traffic in the area. ( darya ) happening today city officials in san jose will hold a community meeting to talk about police use of

force policy. the police chief as well as several members of the city council will be at the meeting. it is in response to the death of jacob dominguez who was shot by a police officer earlier this month. community members will have a chance to voice their concerns about police transparency. the meeting begins at 7:00 tonight at the bible way christian center on oakland road in san jose. ( mark ) happening now... police are searching for an armed robber who stole from a walgreens in santa rosa. it happened at the walgreens on highway 12. the robber went straight to the pharmacy and with his face covered he demanded prescription pills. no one was hurt int he ( darya ) the robbery in santa rosa is similar to a robbery at a walgreens in danville that happened last week. in that case a thief with a gun also went into the store's pharmacy with his face covered and stole several prescription drugs. police have not said if the two cases are connected. ( mark ) we now know the cause of a fire that left ten

people without a home in redwood city. fire officials received multiple calls about smoke coming from an apartment complex on fourth avenue near middlefield road on friday night. three apartments were destroyed. the fire was started by a malfunctioning freezer causing more than 250-thousand dollars in damage. no one was injured. ( mark ) in the east bay... another mountain lion has been spotted. two hikers were on a trail near grizzly peak's sign post two when they saw the animal. the hikers say the mountain lion was about 75 feet away from them. wildlife experts advise people to avoid this area at dawn, dusk and during the night. that is when mountain lions are most active. if you do come across one... do not run away. instead ... make yourself look big by waving your arms, throwing rocks and making loud noises. ( darya ) also happening now... police in san francisco are looking for the driver who hit and killed a grocery store owner in san francisco. it happened on friday morning... the driver is still on the loose. the victim was hit and killed outside the wholesale foods produce market

( darya ) people in the north bay are being warned about a naked man wandering around a park in windsor. police say two women reported the man came out of the bushes at foothill regional park in windsor and started walking toward them with his hands out. police searched for the man but did not find him. police say the same thing happened to two other women last week. windsor police say they are increasing patrols in the ( mark ) a man arrested near the white house had a car full of weapons. officers found nine guns, three knives, brass knuckles and various types of ammunition in his vehicle. the man told secret service that he was going to the white house to speak with defense secretary james mattis. the man was taken to a hospital for mental observation. he's facing several weapons charges. t( darya ) a man has died after police shot him inside a home in san francisco. police say the man was holding his wife and two young children hostage. it happened saturday night on salmon street near pacific avenue. when officers arrived they say they heard yelling inside the apartment. for several hours, negotiators kept talking with the man while police surrounded the home. then officers say they heard a gun shot go off. the tactical team stormed in and opened fire on the man. he was then taken to a hospital where he died.

( darya ) happening now... police are searching for an armed robber who stole from a walgreens in santa rosa. it happened at the walgreens on highway 12. the robber went straight to the pharmacy and with his face covered he demanded prescription pills. no one was hurt int he robbery. cause of a fire that left ten people without a home in redwood city. fire officials received multiple calls about smoke coming from an apartment complex on fourth avenue near middlefield road on friday night. three apartments were destroyed. the fire was started by a malfunctioning freezer causing more than 250-thousand dollars in damage. no one was injured. ( mark ) in the east bay... another mountain lion has been spotted. two hikers were on a trail near grizzly peak's sign post two when they saw the animal. the hikers say the mountain lion was about 75 feet away from them. wildlife experts advise people to avoid this area at dawn, dusk and during the night. that is when mountain lions are most active. if you do come across one... do not run away. instead ... make yourself look big by waving your arms, throwing rocks and making loud noises. is teaming up with new york's governor to help puerto rico recover from hurricane maria. the storm hit the u-s territory on wednesday. new york governor andrew cuomo announced a state-wide relief effort after visiting the island over the weekend.

lopez says she plans to donate one-million dollars from her las vegas concerts. lopez's parents are from puerto rico ( darya ) shawn mendes is raising money to help those affected by the earthquake in mexico. the singer- songwriter is teaming up with the red cross for a fundraiser on "crowd-rise." mendes and his team got things started by donating 100-thousand dollars to the effort. mendes was in mexico city getting ready for a concert when the quake hit last week.
