(robin) and during the a's game last night in oakland... the san francisco public schools band played the national anthem.... while kneeling. the school band is comprised of over 100 students from at least five of the district's schools. (james) happening now in puerto rico. federal agencies are ramping up their efforts in the aftermath of hurricane maria. 700 fena staff and 10-thousand federal workers are there to hand out supplies and conduct search and rescue missions.(robin) however, president trump drew criticism last night for finally speaking out on twitter -- five days after the disaster -- by criticizing the island's already "broken infrastructure, massive debt" and "old electrical grid." it could be months before many people have electricity again on the island. (james) also happening now... parts of the north carolina coast are under mandatory evacuation orders as hurricane maria approaches. maria is now a category one

storm with winds of about 80 miles per hour as it moves north across the atlantic. (robin) the evacuation orders stem from fears of high tides and dangerous storm surge. maria made landfall in the caribbean as a category 5 storm earlier this month. (james) the death toll following the powerful seven-point-one earthquake in mexico city has risen to 326... and rescue teams are still looking for survivors. over the the last month... the country has endured four earthquakes, three of them were above a six-point-oh. (robin) waves of support continue to flow into the country. singer- songwriter, shawn mendes and the red cross have teamed up to raise nearly 300-thousand dollars. mexican officials say the search for survivors will continue for the next several weeks. (james) it appears the effort to repeal the affordable health care act has been dealt a fatal blow. maine senator susan collins is a "no" on the bill - her stance likely kills the measure because she becomes the third republican to oppose it.(robin) this comes after a preliminary report

you first on four...hateful graffiti... sprayed on the front door of an east bay apartment... has left a community rattled.(robin) the hate crime was last week at the bayside commons apartments in albany. that's where kron4's charles clifford went to speak with some of the residents. according to this according to this notice released by bayside commons management last week, a swastika and the word "kill" were spray painted on the doorway of an apartment last wednesday evening. two door peep holes were also painted over, preventing the african american occupant from looking out.sources tell kron 4 that the resident of the apartment is ok, taking the attack in stride, but many other other neighbors here are alarmed.sotit's very scary. njeri karanja has lived here for 8 years. she says there's never been a problem like this here before and that everyone at the commons is very friendly. she suspects whoever did this probably lives somewhere else.soti hope

this is someone who got onto the property rather than someone who lives here.bayside commons management declined to be interviewed for this story, sighting the privacy concerns of residents. in their statement they do say that the albany police have been notified and that a hate crime addendum was added to the police report. the albany police department said on monday that they are looking into this case but declined to say if any suspects have been identified.njeri hopes whoever did this will be found soon. she also hopes that management will make some safety upgrades. sotespecially since we can't figure out who it was because their peephole was blocked and there's no cameras in the hallway. you would think we wouldn't need the security here but it appears we do. (robin) another big story this morning:two guns were stolen from an off-duty police officer's car in oakland. continuing a dangerous trend of law enforcement weapons

ending up in the wrong hands. the theft happened yesterday near the oakland airport. as kron4's justine waldman tells us -- the officer who had the weapons stolen - is not from the bay area. shattered black glass now shines on the ground,.in the black bear diner parking lot, is where someone broke into an unmarked suv belonging to the city of taft police department.the thief took a backpack from car - inside some of the officer own stuff and two handguns; one a duty weapon, the other the officers personal firearm.sot oh my god that is unconscionable taft is about 260 miles away from oakland.after helping with security at uc berkeley's free speech week over the weekend. .. 5 officers were traveling home, but had stopped to eatat 11 on monday morning. the taft police department tells kron 4 newsthe suv was locked. but would not say if the guns were loaded.and said it has no rule on how to lock handguns inside department cars.sot as far as the taft police policy it does not currently does not have a defined storage requirement other than rifles and shotguns which are stored locked while on or off dutypeople in the area tell kron 4 cars get

(james) new video this morning -- showing the robberies at two bay area brdige toll booths. the first happened at the carquinez bridge early sudnay morning... the other happened at the bay bridge that same afternoon. both times it goes down the same way... a man pulls up with a gun.. and the toll booth worker hands over the money. you can't see it - but police say there are two people in the car each time. the crooks got away with about four thousand dollars. investigators have released the surveillance video -- along with a car used in hopes you can help catch the thieves. as kron four's haaziq madyun tells us.... this isn't the first time the two bridges were targeted this year. two toll takers robbed over the weekend. the first happened here at the carquinez bridge at 4am sunday morning. the second robbery occurred sunday at 2pm here at the bay bridge toll plaza. that is where surveillance cameras captured these images of one of the robberscalifornia highway patrol spokesperson

officer jon franzen gives more information on the two robbers looking closely at the man in the photo you will see his hands are covered with blue latex glovesc-h-p investigators say the robbers got away with a little over 4-thousand dollars between the two toll booths. the toll collectors were not injured an official at the bay area toll authority told me these same two bridges were robbed earlier this year. the most recent was back on september 14th here at the bay bridge, before that a carquinez toll collector was robbed back on may 3rd of this year. the chp is aksing for the public's

kron four's rob fladeboe has what you need to know. so far campbell is the only jurisdiction to release surveillance photos but the pictures are so clear investigators say there may be no need to release the other images, which are said to include some video as well. police are confidant someone will recognize these two people, described as a white or hispanic male and a white female. the two are suspected in at least four separate armed robberies in campbell, santa clara, sunnyvale and san jose. the crime spree began early on the morning of friday, september 8th. in each case the suspects confronted people as they conducted transactions at atm machines like these at this chase branch bank at winchester and hamilton avenues according to campbell police captain joe cefalu. captain joe cenfalu/campbell police"....it's about 8:30 in the morning and one of our victims walks up to the atm machine and someone walks up behind her, she reported seeing a firearm. they demanded money and then made

( mark ) first on kron4..racist graffiti is found spray painted on the door of an apartment in the east bay. it happened at the bayside commons apartments in albany. apartment officials say a swastika and the word "kill" were spray painted on a doorway. people who live at the apartment complex say they have never had a problem like this before... and now they would like to see upgrades to security on the property.

( darya ) in the east bay - two guns are stolen from law enforcement. this time the gun was taken from officers visiting from out of town... they were in the bay area helping with security for u-c berkeley's free speech week. the taft police officers stopped at the black bear diner in oakland on their way home. that's where one of their unmarked cars windows was busted. the thief took a backpack from the car which contained two handguns. oakland police are now looking for security video from the diner and nearby gas station... trying to find the person who stole the guns. ( darya ) this is the second time this month that a gun has been taken from law enforcement in the bay area. earlier this month...a san francisco sheriff's deputy was fired...after he did not properly secure his work gun

in a rental car...and the gun was stolen while he was parked in san francisco. police are still looking for the person who stole that gun as well. ( mark ) happening now... police are looking for two people involved in a shooting in san francisco's bay view district. it happened in the area of oakdale avenue and lane street. a 19-year-old man was shot. he is expected to be okay. police say they are looking for two other men but they have not released any descriptions shooter. ( mark ) happening today... students and staff at one south bay school are planning a march in defense of undocumented immigrants protected by the daca program. the trump administration ended the program earlier this month. staff and students from los altos high school will hold a march from los altos high school to eagle park in mountain view. the march is set to begin at 4 o'clock this afternoon and could disrupt traffic in the area. kron 4 morning news. the first robbery happened at the carquinez bridge early sunday morning... the other happened at the bay bridge bridge that same afternoon. both times a man pulls up with a gun.. and the toll booth worker hands over the money. the thieves got away with four thousand dollars. ( darya ) in the east bay... police have made a major drug bust in berkeley. the bust happened over the weekend at a home on alcatraz avenue. police got a call about domestic violence and started investigating. they arrested a 35 year old man and a 37 year old woman. police say they also found mushrooms growing in the home totaling more than one million dollars. ( mark ) bart police arrest a man who attacked a woman on a train. it happened early yesterday morning on a train headed for daly city. witnesses say the man hit the woman for no reason. other passengers detained the man until police arrived and he was taken into custody. the woman was not seriously injured.

( mark ) and happening now... parts of the north carolina coast are under mandatory evacuation orders ahead of hurricane maria. maria is now a category one storm as it moves north in the atlantic. it is currently bringing winds of about 80 miles per hour. the evacuation orders come over fears of high tides and dangerous strom surge. this comes after maria devastated the caribbean as a category 5 storm earlier this month. ( darya ) also happening now... a wildfire in forcing people from their homes in southern california. the canyon fire is burning near anaheim. this is new video of the fire from overnight. so far it has burned more than 17-hundred acres and destroyed at least one building. firefighters say several other buildings are threatened this morning.

( darya ) 4 your health ... your morning cup of coffee could soon come with a cancer warning. a non-profit group has filed a lawsuit saying coffee companies need to display the warning on their products.( mark ) according to some scientists... coffee contains a chemical called acrylamide (uh-kril-uh-mide)... that is created in the roasting process... and that chemical can cause cancer. it is on california's list of dangerous chemicals that must be disclosed to consumers.( darya ) the group behind the lawsuit says coffee companies are violating state law by not warning people about the chemical. coffee companies say the chemical is present but is levels and the outweighed by the benefits with coffee. about car burglaries in san francisco. new figures show break-ins are up 25 percent. city officials believe that number might actually be higher because many of the crimes are not reported to police. now at least two city of san francisco supervisors are sponsoring legislation to address the problem. the bill would create localized police units, targeting the areas with the highest numbers of break-ins and bike thefts. some neighborhoods have seen a 128 percent increase in car

( mark ) sunnyvale police arrest three women for multiple burglaries. police released the mugshots of two out of three suspects. the women are accused of committing multiple burlgaries and identity thefts over the last six months. they would target female real estate agents working alone at open houses and wome working alone at convenience stores. their spree involved crimes in sunnyvale, cupertino, los gatos, palo alto, and santa clara. the women are each facing a total of 20 charges. ( mark ) a big break for the prosecution in the murder of kate steinle. steinle was shot and killed on pier 14 in july of 2015. a judge

has ruled that a confession given to police by the accused killer can be used as evidence. prosecutors say that juan francisco lopez-sanchez told police that he shot steinle during an interview shortly after he was arrested. lopez sanchez is an undocumented immigrant and the gun used in the shooting was stolen from a bureau of land management agent's car. lopez-sanchez has not been linked to the theft of the gun. ( darya ) a funeral service for a c-h-p officer who was killed in a motorcycle accident will be held on friday. officer james branik of san jose was riding his motorcycle on monterey highway- just south of chester avenue earlier this month when he was hit by a pickup truck. branik was assigned to the c-h-p's gilroy commercial vehicle enforcement facility in san mar-teen. branik's funeral wil be held at the morgan hill community and cultural center on friday afternoon. nobody has been arrested in connection (mark) police are investigating a deadly shooting at a city park in pittsburg. it happened on sunday night near 17th street and railroad avenue. police found a 20-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. now police are trying to figure out if the victim knew his attacker. this is pittsburg's seventh homicide of the year. (mark) a new billboard on the bay bridge is calling on congress to begin impeachment

( darya ) this morning we are getting a look at new video showing the robberies at two bay area bridge toll booths. we first told you about this yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. the first robbery happened at the carquinez bridge early sunday morning... the other happened at the bay bridge bridge that same afternoon. both times a man pulls up with a gun.. and the toll booth worker hands over the money. the thieves got away with four thousand dollars. ( darya ) bart police arrest a man who attacked a woman on a train. it happened early yesterday morning on a train headed for daly city. witnesses say the man hit the woman for no reason. other passengers detained the man until police arrived and he was taken into custody. the woman was not seriously injured. ( darya ) in the east bay... police have made a major drug bust in berkeley. the bust happened over the

weekend at a home on alcatraz avenue. police got a call about domestic violence and started investigating. they arrested a 35 year old man and a 37 year old woman. police say they also found mushrooms growing in the home totaling more than one million dollars. ( mark ) the death toll following the powerful seven-point-one earthquake in mexico city has risen to 325. and rescue teams are still looking for survivors. over the the last month... the country has endured four earthquakes, three of them were above a six-point-oh. mexican officials say that they do not expect to find any more survivors in the rubble ( mark ) in puerto rico, federal agencies are ramping up their efforts... after hurricane maria roared through five days ago. many parts of the island have been without power and it could be months before people get their electricity back. another concern is a dam in the northwest part of puerto rico. tens of thousands of people have been evacuated out of fears that the dam could fail after being damaged by the ( mark ) and happening now... parts of the north

( darya ) a youth baseball league is forced to cancel their season after vandals damaged their field. it happened earlier this month in hollister. someone set the equipment shed on fire... destroying it completely. fire investigators say it was arson and nobody has been caught. it will cost the babe ruth league thousands of dollars to replace everything and rebuild. ( mark ) happening now a warning about car burglaries in san francisco. new figures show break-ins are up 25 percent. city officials believe that number might actually be higher because many of the crimes are not reported to police. now at least two city of san francisco supervisors are sponsoring legislation to address the problem. the bill would create localized police units, targeting the areas with the highest numbers of break-ins and bike thefts. some neighborhoods have seen a 128 percent increase in car break-ins. ( mark ) the new legislation could be voted on by the supervisors as early as next month. ( mark ) sunnyvale police arrest three women for multiple burglaries. police released the mugshots

of two out of three suspects. the women are accused of committing multiple burlgaries and identity thefts over the last six months. they would target female real estate agents working alone at open houses and women working alone at convenience stores. their spree involved crimes in sunnyvale, cupertino, los gatos, palo alto, and santa clara. the women are each facing a total of 20 charges. ( darya ) a big break for the prosecution in the murder of kate steinle. steinle was shot and killed on pier 14 in july of 2015. a judge has ruled that a confession given to police by the accused killer can be used as evidence. prosecutors say that juan francisco lopez-sanchez told police that he shot steinle during an interview shortly after he was arrested. lopez sanchez is an undocumented immigrant and the gun used in the shooting was stolen from a bureau of land management agent's car. lopez-sanchez has not been linked to the theft of the gun. ( darya ) a funeral service for a c-h-p officer who was killed in a motorcycle

accident will be held on friday. officer james branik of san jose was riding his motorcycle on monterey highway- just south of chester avenue earlier this month when he was hit by a pickup truck. branik was assigned to the c-h-p's gilroy commercial vehicle enforcement facility in san mar-teen. branik's funeral wil be held at the morgan hill community and cultural center on friday afternoon. nobody has been arrested in connection to the crash. ( mark ) police are investigating a deadly shooting at a city park in pittsburg. it happened on sunday night near 17th street and railroad avenue. police found a 20-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. he died at the scene. now police are trying to figure out if the victim knew his attacker. this is pittsburg's seventh homicide of the year. ( mark ) the recent protests at u-c berkeley are coming with a hefty price tag. the university spent more than a million dollars this year providing security for various rallies and protests. more protesters gathered on campus yesterday... despite the last minute cancellation

( mark ) now to a story we brought you first on four... hateful graffiti... sprayed on the front door of an east bay apartment... has left a community rattled.( darya ) the hate crime was last week at the bayside commons apartments in albany. that's where kron4's charles clifford went to speak with some of the residents. according to this notice released by bayside commons management last week, a

swastika and the word "kill" were spray painted on the doorway of an apartment last wednesday evening. two door peep holes were also painted over, preventing the african american occupant from looking out.sources tell kron 4 that the resident of the apartment is ok, taking the attack in stride, but many other other neighbors here are alarmed.sot it's very scary.njeri karanja has lived here for 8 years. she says there's never been a problem like this here before and that everyone at the commons is very friendly. she suspects whoever did this probably lives somewhere else. soti hope this is someone who got onto the property rather than someone who lives here. bayside commons management declined to be interviewed for this story, sighting the privacy concerns of residents. in their statement they do say that the albany police have been notified and that a hate crime addendum was added to the police report. the albany police department said on monday that they are looking into this case but declined to say if any suspects have been identified.njeri hopes whoever did this will be found soon. she also hopes that management will make some safety upgrades. sotespecially since we can't
