(estacio) hot searing flames spread quickly consuming acres after this fire off of 580 in the east oakland hills ignited earty tuesday afternoon. 23:20 we immediately began upgrading the fire, from 2 to 3 to 4. a massive air strike team zeroed in on the fire making rapid water drops - as well as unleashing flame retardant. interim oakland fire chief darin white tells kron four news about the

(grant) in southern california... a massive fire is forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. the "canyon fire" as its known, is has spread across two counties...and has burned more than 25-hundred acres. firefighters have managed to keep it fire from destroying hundreds of homes. watching the fire burn within feet of their home last night... many locals packed up and left. others decided to stay...trying to help. (jim white/ neighbor): "they stood watch and said, you know, if embers starting flying, let's put them out and we did. so it was a joint effort."(shane poulter/ neighbor): "i want to thank the firefighters. man, there was hundreds of them up here and without them, i think a few homes in this neighborhood wouldn't be here today." santa ana winds are making it even more difficult for firefighters to get the flames under control. the canyon fire is only five percent contained. firefighters are on their way to southern california to help. these pictures were posted on the alameda county fire department's twitter account. firefighter from oakland, fremont and hayward are on their way down. they are bringing fire truck and supplies. (vicki) to the south bay now where a plume of smoke over east san jose had residents worriedthere might be a wild fire.(grant) but as kron four's rob fladeboe reports, the smoke was coming from a house fire that caused heavy damage. this was the scene just after 8 o'clock this morning as some 40 firefighters battled a 2-alarm fire at this home on chisin street, off nieman avenue in the city's evergreen district. no one was home and there were no injuries as smoke and flames poured from the eves and roof of the two-story home. joshua padron/san jose fire dept. ".....the fire made it's way up into the attic space and we had crews up on the roof and they were able to cut a hole

(grant) another big story we are tracking tonight... the family of the ohio man who died after being released from a north korean prison is speaking out. otto warmbier (warm-beer) was detained in north korea for more than a year for stealing a propaganda poster.(vicki) he died shortly after he was returned home. otto's parents say the 22-year-old university of virginia student was "jerking violently" when

he was returned. he was making unhuman-like sounds and staring blankly. otto's parents says they wanted to speak out after hearing north korea claiming to be a victim. (fred warmbier/ son otto died days after release from north korean detention): "now we see north korea with tensions, claiming to be a victim and they're claiming that the world is picking on them and we're here to tell you as witnesses to the terror of their regime, north korea is not a victim. so we felt it was time to tell the truth about the condition that otto was in." north korea has denied mistreating otto. his parents are now calling kim jong un a "terrorist." a high school in miami florida is coming under fire - because of the way a dance team is dressing... woman who is hoping to help others avoid being victims of this crime. this is the man that rang the buzzer, claiming to be from ups 11:44 like i can't pretend that i've never let someone in when they buzz and say they are from ups it's unclear who let him in to this building near alamo square but what residents do know is that the following day, their packages were missing9:49 we noticed that where there were many packages early that day there were none later and we knew that we had packages there but they weren't thereit happened on a weekday at about 9:40pm no one saw him that night-but the cameras recorded everything 10: 14 it's so infuriating because yeah i guess you can do that but jesus like taking advantage of peoples trust and you know people are trying to get their packages and stuff caelyn casanova was waiting for a package that was stolen that day now she hopes others will also learn the lesson 12:26 i do hope that people just become more aware that this is a growing problemthe building manager said they get

(vicki) a couple's wedding photo session turned into a rescue mission when the groom jumped into a pond to save a little boy from drowning. (grant) and their wedding photographer captured everything... reporter tina yazdani has the story. clayton and brittany cook of cambridge, ont., had just tied the knot friday and were posing for their wedding photographer on a park bridge when the groom noticed a child in distress in the water below. "i look over and i see clay in the water and i think,

what is he doing?" brittany cook told ctv kitchener.her husband had jumped in to save a little boy who had gone in the water while playing in the park. the couple and the photographer said it appeared that another child pushed the boy into the water."his face was underwater and he was fighting, like he was really fighting," clayton cook said. "luckily, he was only a little guyand i honestly just sort of hopped him up."the boy appeared to be ok, and he didn't say a word after he was pulled out of the water, according to the couple. eventually, an older sibling took him away.the wedding photographer, darren hatt, captured the whole ordeal. two photos posted on his facebook page show clayton cook, nearly waist-up in water, pulling the drenched boy onto dry land."it was a commendable thing that he did and he sprung into action incredibly quick," hatt said of the groom. oakland hills. a fire roars dangerously close to homes.. leading to evacuations and conjuring memories of the deadly firestorm of 1991. good evening i'm catherine heenan...( steve ) and i'm steve aveson. this fire started at about 12:15 and it had firefighters scrambling. this map gives you an idea of exactly where it is in the hills. very close to 580... just below campus drive. we saw a massive response by firefighters...it quickly went to four alarms. we begin

our coverage with kron 4's terisa estacio... she is in the oakland hills tonight. bcn33 -oakland hills fire (update on bcn30) oakland (bcn) a four-alarm grass fire in the oakland hills north of interstate highway 580 is 50 percent contained this afternoon, a cal fire spokeswoman said. the fire was first reported at 12:13 p.m. on a steep hillside near mountain boulevard and edwards avenue and prompted the evacuation of about 50 homes threatened by the fire. the homes are on bayview drive, skyview drive, ridgemont drive, viewcrest drive and the 13650 block of campus drive, oakland police said shortly after 1 p.m. merritt college at 12500 campus drive was also evacuated and classes have been canceled, according to the school's website. cal fire spokeswoman pam temmermand said shortly after 2 p.m. that the blaze is considered 50 percent contained but that the homes are no longer threatened since there are no active flames on the hillside. a couple of helicopters are continuing to drop water where needed and crews are "working on the left flank of the fire," temmermand said. she said crews will likely be at the scene for several hours. no injuries were reported in the

blaze and no structures were damaged. "oakland fire jumped on it really quick," temmermand said. with the help of cal fire and other assisting agencies, "we were able to get a handle on this fairly quickly so that's good news," she said. the california highway patrol has shut down off-ramps on eastbound highway 580 at keller and edwards avenues to keep traffic away from the firefighting effort. the national weather service issued a red flag warning today through wednesday afternoon for the east bay hills because of dry weather conditions that pose a high risk of wildfires. ( grant ) some tense moments for sure this afternoon.. we had at least one woman tell us she grab what she could and got out of her home. we have already

shown you some of the pictures... and you can see from the video this was a real close call. people came out to see what was going on and then came the order.... get out. we saw firefighters in the backyard of one home... dousing the hillside with water. we caught up with one homeowner who says she had only a few minutes to leave... so she just grabbed some basic items and took off..

brittney shipp. ( catherine ) one of the biggest reasons we're seeing such a huge response to this fire ... is because of the memories from the oakland hills firestorm in october of 1991. that fire killed 25- people, injured 150- others and destroyed more than 3- thousand homes. it started as a small fire which

firefighters thought they had knocked down. but, the next day it was still smoldering... the wind picked up the embers and the fire reignited into a raging inferno which raced through the hills. investigators never determined the exact cause of the firestorm. (steve) in the north day... several people are injured after truck veered off the highway and crashed into several cars in a in-n-out parking lot. it happened around 2-30 pm at the restaurant off redwood highway in the strawberry village shopping center.

authorities say the driver lost control and drove off highway 101... the truck crashed through a chain-link fence.... smashing into at least five cars in the restaurant parking lot. six people were taken to the hospital... including a pregnant woman. two of them are in critical condition. ( catherine ) there was another protest today in berkeley... also more arrests. so far we know that these three people were taken into custody. the protest ended about 3-30 this afternoon. the group 'patriot prayer' announced plans to hold a demonstration today as part of the now canceled free speech week... about 100 people did show up. (catherine) the woman who was arrested is no stranger to trouble at protests. yvonne felarca who goes by the name yvette... was arrested during a violent brawl at the state capitol in sacramento last year. felarca works as a teacher at a berkeley middle school... she was put on leave following the arrest. she's since been reinstated. ( catherine ) as for

patriot prayer... they had planned to hold a rally at crissy field in san francisco a few weeks ago. they ultimately decided to cancel the event... citing security concerns. they had talked about moving it... but that never materialized. san francisco police say they spent close to 800-thousand dollars on security for the rally that never happened. a serious canyon fire in southern california is also causingevacuations for many families, we'll take you there a steep hill in san francisco catapults a driver 3- quarters of the wayinto a house --- where the owner slept through the entire drama. the latest porch bandit is caught on camera posing as a deliveryman in san franciso to rip off your packages.

a thief is caught on surveillance video as he steals packages from a residential building in san francisco. cameras capture the moment he rings the buzzer claiming to be a ups delivery man. he is allowed in the building, where he begins to choose the boxes that he is going to steal. in a matter of minutes, he takes off on his bike with a number of packages. what he didn't realize, was that all of it was recorded.

( catherine ) several homes were left without power this morning when a car crashed into a san francisco home. authorities say the driver lost control of the car... and veered off the road. it then crashed about three-quarters of the way into a garage...which has since been boarded up. the man who lives in the house says the two people inside the car were as surprised as he was about the crash. (david-i did. they just apologized. they kept saying oh my god, i'm so sorry. i'm so sorry. i think they had just gotten out of their cars and they were a little stunned themselves) ( catherine ) he says he believes the car he'd parked inside the garage stopped the driver from going all the way through the house. no word on why the driver lost control

of the car. (pam) in the east bay... an a-c transit bus collided with a boy riding a bicycle this morning. it happened around 7-45 at the intersection of dwight way and california street. police say the 13-year-old boy was taken to the hospital. he's expected to be ok.. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor. the accident is under investigation. police say the driver of the bus is cooperating with investigators. a huge wildfire in southern california is forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.. (catherine) firefighters are working around the clock to stop the fire...which is shaking people upin neighborhoods including corona, anaheim and chino hills... roughly 500 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders... and it's burning right along the 91 freeway...the three square mile fire started around 1-pm yesterday in steep canyons in the santa ana

mountains.. it's 25- hundred acre fire which has damaged one home and destroyed the trailer of a semi-truck. no injuries have been reported... at last word - the canyon fire is only about 5 percent contained.. roughly three-hundred firefighters are on the scene. and that now includes fire crews from alameda county... firefighters from oakland, fremont and hayward met this morning for a briefing....then headed south to help out. it's been a huge effort to keep the fire from destroying hundreds of homes.. the wildfire forced several schools to close today... the cause is still under investigation. (on cam)at this point the fire has burned 22 acres and is now roughly 60% contained according to oakland fire officials. that level of containment was reached so quickly as a result of a relentless air attack on the fast moving blaze (on cam)helicopters and fixed winged aircrafts put on quite a show pounding the campus drive grass fire with water and fire retardant here on the hill above 580-freeway in oaklandas you can see the fire was spreading down the hill towards multiple homes dangerously close to the blaze as a precaution residents there were evacuated while fire fighters took to the air, making back to back sweeps dousing the hill, reloading and making another drop of water on top of the firethe spectacle was too much for some drivers on the freeway who live in the fire zonecan you see your house from here?
