fire in the oakland hills. over 100 homes were forced to evacuate yesterday due to a large, fast moving fire near the site of a former quarry. (robin) the fire spread quickly through dry grass as firefighters used air tankers and helicopters to battle the blaze. kron 4's ella sogomonian brings us more from oakland. tankers dropped fire retardant for hours over flames that erupted just after 12:30 tuesday afternoon just off the 580 in the east oakland hills. sot: joel weiner, oakland hills resident// "the police helicopter was circling right above the yard here. going in one circle over and over and over again. initially not saying anything so that's why i thought they were looking for someone. and then all of a sudden he was speaking over a loud speaker i never heard that before. with the noise of the helicopter and him speaking it was hard to discern what he was saying but then i heard him say get ready to evacuate."the thought of leaving their homes vulnerable was frightening for many on view crest drive who chose to stay behind instead. while others who weren't at home at the time were blocked off from

(james) san francisco is bracing for another unusually hot day today... the city is doing what it can to help people stay cool.. more than a dozen cooling centers are being made available for free to help beat the heat. kron 4's charles clifford had details. sotsan francisco is a bit new to heat. it's not a city that experiences heat very often but that is starting to change. rachael kagan is with the san francisco department of public health. she says that after three people died and dozens went to the hospital during the labor day weekend heatwave, the city stepped efforts to help residents stay cool. this time around more than 17 cooling centers are being made available to the public. sotcity libraries are open as usual but they are also cooling centers for people who want to come in out of the heat. there's water available. there are also 4 community centers that are acting as cooling centers wednesday and thursday. the city pools are open as usual and from 11am to 4 people if people are seeking cooling off they can swim for free. if you ware going to classes as usual

you will still have to pay.the health department is also hoping that during this heat waves, residents will look out for each other. soteveryone should look after themselves, look after their neighbor, if you have an elderly friend or a pet or a neighbor who's sick. make sure the yare getting water and staying cool. if need be make sure there is a plan to get to the library, get to a city pool (james) that was charles clifford reporting.health officials are also reminding people to not leave pets in cars, avoid strenuous outdoor activities and drink a lot of water. (robin) more east bay news this morning. the controversial billboard calling for the impeachment of president trump has been removed. outfront media -- the company that owns the electronic billboard near the bay bridge -- made the decision. the spot was paid for by the california-

based courage campaign. outfront media has notified the organization that it has removed the billboard ... due to multiple complaints. the spot was set to run through sunday. (robin) another clash of ideas on the campus of u-c berkeley yesterday. it started as a rally and march by the conservative group 'patriot prayer'. they were immediately confronted .. and then surrounded by a slightly larger group of counter- protesters. (robin) police say they arrested three people. eddy robinson was arrested on suspicion of participating in a riot. ricky joseph mon-zon, was arrested on suspicion of carrying a "banned weapon" inside the protest zone. and yvette fe-larca, was arrested on suspicion of battery. fe-larca was also charged back in july with assault, participating in a riot.. and inciting a riot after violence broke out at a white nationalist rally in sacramento last year. about an attack that occured yesterday at san francisco international airport. what we do know -- is that a police officer was stabbed -- and a suspect is in custody. kron4's j.r. stone has more. crime scene take roping off a section of terminal 1 at san francisco international airport after employees say a man stabbed an officer in the leg.sot it's always scary going to the airport these days and i'm glad that people are protecting us.police say they responded to a report of a suspicious man walking near the curb outside of the delta baggage area around 2:30 tuesday afternoon. the man in question was located near a baggage carousel. detectives say when the man was confronted he stabbed an officer. sot i mean you know a person who walks around and stab somebody if that's what happen i would have to say there is something probably mentally wrong with the guy. after the stabbing bloody items could be seen scattered along the inside of the airport. the officer was taken to a nearby hospital and

should be okay. the suspect was arrested. officials aren't saying who the suspect is, what he was doing, or how he got there. those in the airport described what they saw after it all went down.sot it looks like a crime scene. i mean they have it all sectioned off we have no idea we just landed. it looks like a bit of mayhem occurred it's a mess and we always get our bags on 17 i thought that was odd yeah. i mean there is stuff all over the place that is terrible.but as terrible as it looked the fact remains that the officer is expected to be okay and the suspect is now in custody. in the 'in-n-out' burger parking lot in mill valley.. it happened after a pickup truck veered off highway 101, went through a fence and hit six cars.. the pregnant woman and the driver of the truck are in critical condition.... all this happened around 2:00- tuesday afternoon.. police believe the driver who crashed... had some type of medical emergency. (robin) a suspected thief -- caught on video as he steals packages from a san francisco residential building. take a look: cameras capture the moment he rings the buzzer claiming to be a u-p-s delivery man. he is allowed in the building, where he begins to choose the boxes that he is going to steal. in a matter of minutes, he takes off on his bike with a number of packages. what he doesn't realize, is that all of it was recorded. we talked to someone who lives in the area.. .(robin) the

building owner is asking the tenants and everyone in the area... not to let anyone in the building, without knowing that the person is who they say they are. authorities are also asking anyone who recognizes the man in the video to contact them. (james) we have new video showing smoke filling an allegiant airlines plane just moments after landing... it happened monday in fresno. cnn's rich rodriguez spoke with a passenger. (james) the fbi has released new crime statisitics. it's not good news for people in fremont. violent crime...was up nearly 25 percent last year... and property crime increased about eight percent. fremont police did say that 184 robberies last year was well below 2006's all time high of 256... and that additional officers have been included in the latest city budget. for equifax.....after the huge data breach that exposed the personal information of millions of americans. san francisco has become the first city to sue equifax over that data breach. the lawsuit accuses the company of violating state law by failing to use reasonable security measures....and not providing timely notice of the breach. a breach was discovered back july 29th -- but not announced to the public until september 7th. the state of massachusetts has also sued....and the company is facing scrutiny from congress. (james) senate republicans will 'not' vote this week ...

on their latest bill to repeal and replace the affordable care act. the graham- cassidy bill as it is known ... was a last ditch push. but it became more apparent in recent days, the measure does not have the votes needed to pass. it's yet another setback for republicans who have promised voters they would overturn the law. south carolina senator lindsey graham is one of the bill's authors ... and he's promising to revisit the repeal effort. then this guy with the black backpack, he saw the bart officers so he made a bee line to the opposite side of the station and exits out the emergency gate and leaves the station oh and by the way this is what the emergency gate looks like, it for authorized use only it even says violators subject to citation i watched a lot of people do an about face when they saw bart police posted at the entrances nats: ambiancethis guy didn't do an about face but he had a rather interesting defense have you used bart before? this is your first time using bart really? he claimed that was his first time very riding bart so he absolutely no idea how everything worked, except there were a few holes in that defense you used your ticket before? that means you have used bart. he somehow he mysteriously just appeared inside bart property, with a used bart ticket, that he used but didn't really use. too ride bart you have to use a ticket, the gates won't open

(robin) some good news for bay area drivers... road conditions across the bay area are getting better. that's according to a new report from the metropolitan transportation commission. it says the pavement is improving... which means fewer bumps and potholes. cities and counties will start to receive money from the gas tax in november... and that will go towards further improving the roads. overall... bay area roads were given a "fair" grade. dublin's roads were ranked the best, and larkspur's were ranked the worst. ( mark ) at least three people are under arrest after more protests at u-c berkeley. it started as a rally by the conservative group 'patriot prayer'. they were confronted by a larger group of counter- protesters. police arrested these three people. eddy robinson, ricky monzon and yvette felarca were arrested for various charges related to the

( mark ) new this morning police have identified the man accused of stabbing a police officer at s-f-o. he has been identified as 64-year-old dooris johnston from san francisco. he has been booked into the san mateo county jail accused of attempted homicide. police say they received a report about a suspicious person outside of baggage claim at terminal 1. police found the man inside the baggage area and confronted him. that is when the officer was stabbed in his hands... neck... face and legs. the 49-year-old officer is still in the hospital this morning with non-life threatening injuries. ( darya ) the city of concord is taking steps to protect undocumented immigrants. the city council unanimously voted to pass a resolution that limits cooperation between local police and federal immigration officers. it also denounces hate speech. this resolution comes less than a month after the trump administration announced plans to end the daca immigration program if congress does not act in the next 6 months. the program protects

( mark ) happening now... police in san francisco are looking for a thief caught on camera stealing packages. in the video you can see the man ring the buzzer of the building. witnesses say he was posing as a u-p-s delivery man. once in the building he steals a number of packages and then takes off on his bike. ( mark ) in the east bay... city officials in fremont are responding to new statistics that show rising crime in the city. according to the f-b-i, violent crime in the city was up nearly 25 percent last year. and property crime increased about eight percent.

fremont police say that many of the assaults in the city were between people who know each other and are not random attacks. they also say that robberies are down significantly from where they were more than 10 years ago. city officials say they have included money for more officers in their latest budget. ( darya ) a state senator from the south bay is working to stop guns from being stolen from law enforcement in the bay area. four guns have been stolen from officer's cars in less than two months. state senator jerry hill wants maximum penalties against any officer who fails to follow the rules on gun storage. hill says he is looking for ways to strengthen laws that require police officers take the same precautions as civilians when handguns are left unattended. stolen weapons were used to kill 32-year-old kate steinle in july 2015 in san francisco and murder 27-year-old muralist antonio ramos in september 2015 in oakland. after landing in california. this is what it looked like in the cabin of the allegiant airlines flight after it landed in fresno yesterday. you can see the people on the plane covering their mouths as they try to get off the plane. emergency equipment surrounded the airplane but there was no fire. passengers and crew members used the rear exit to get off the plane. ( darya ) allegiant says the smoke came from a mechanical issue as the plane was taxiing to the ( mark ) a proposal to repeal a gas tax hike in california is still headed to the ballot... but it has been rewritten. a judge rewrote the official description after saying the original proposal submitted by the state attorney general - was flawed and misleading. the title of the propsal originally said the measure would eliminate transportation funding by "repealing revenues." the judge changed the measure to say it would repeal gas and diesel taxes as well as

( mark ) construction has begun on eight prototype walls at a border crossing with mexico in southern california. the purpose of the walls is to help officials figure out what types of walls might work best at different locations along the u-s border with mexico. all of the prototypes will be between eighteen and thirty feet tall. officials set up a "free speech zone" near the construction area for ( mark ) the prototypes are being paid for with twenty million dollars from the department of homeland security. congress has not authorized any money for an actual border wall to be constructed. ( darya ) teenagers in san joaquin county helped save some ducks after their bills were zip-tied. the teenagers found the ducks inside a park in turlock

( mark ) happening today... the man accused of sexually abusing children in the north bay will be in court. 39-year-old kevin thorpe is a former counselor at a center for at-risk boys in sonoma county. he is charged with 15 counts of sex abuse of a child. officials say thorpe molested two young boys

several times between 2006 and 20-11. thorpe worked at the hanna boys center in sonoma. police believe that is where some of the crimes took place. thorpe is expected to enter a plea at today's hearing. ( mark ) happening now... firefighters are still working to contain a wild fire burning in southern california. it's burning in corona, anaheim and chino hills. it has grown to more than 2- thousand acres and is only 15 percent contained. roughly 500 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders. it started burning right along the 91 freeway on monday in steep canyons in the santa ana mountains.. one home has been damaged. ( mark ) bay area firefighters are on their way to southern california to help in that fire. these pictures were posted on the alameda county fire department's twitter account. firefighters from oakland, fremont and hayward are on their way down bringing trucks and supplies to the firefighters. ( mark ) caltrain service is back to normal this morning after a person was hit by a train in redwood city. it happened last night near whipple avenue and el camino real. investigators have not said what led up to the

( darya ) san rafael police are looking for three men they say robbed a restaurant. authorities have released these photos of the men taken from surveillance video. the restaurant is in downtown san rafael. there is no word on what the thieves took. ( darya ) the woman who's two daughters died last year when she crashed her car in petaluma has been arrested. alejandra hernandez was in court yesterday for the death of her seven and nine-year-old daughters last august. hernandez was driving the girls to school when she swerved off the road and crashed in the petaluma river. the mother was able to escape unharmed but the two girls were trapped in the car and died. hernandez is facing a string of charges including vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment. it is unclear why it took so charge hernandez. has canceled his concert at levi's stadium. the grammy- award winning artist is canceling the tour date over of the 10 pm curfew on week nights in the city. the 49-ers president says the curfew is costing the community money. a spokesperson for the stadium says concerts bring in around 700-thousand dollars each... and employ four thousand people. ( mark ) san francisco supervisors are pushing to provide a universal child care program. supervisor jane kim says she is exploring a possible ballot measure that would allow the city to implement a universal, affordable child care program. the details of the bill are still in the works. kim says she hopes to have the measure ready by next year. and in the east bay- officials in alameda county are working on a sales tax measure that would provide affordable child care to everybody. ( mark ) at least three people are under arrest after more protests at u-c berkeley. it started as a rally by the conservative group 'patriot prayer'. they were confronted by a larger group of counter- protesters. police arrested these three people. eddy robinson, ricky monzon and yvette felarca were arrested for various charges related to the protest. ( mark ) new this morning police have identified the man accused of stabbing a police officer at s-f-o. he has been identified as 64-year-old dooris johnston from san francisco. he has been booked into the san mateo county jail accused of attempted homicide. police say they received a report about a suspicious person outside of baggage claim at terminal 1. police found the man inside the baggage area and confronted him. that is when the officer was stabbed in his hands... neck... face and legs. the 49-year-old officer is still in the hospital this morning with non-life threatening injuries. ( darya ) the city of concord is taking steps to

protect undocumented immigrants. the city council unanimously voted to pass a resolution that limits cooperation between local police and federal immigration officers. it also denounces hate speech. this resolution comes less than a month after the trump administration announced plans to end the daca immigration program if congress does not act in the next 6 months. the program protects undocumented immigrants brought to the u-s as children. ( darya ) eight people - including a pregnant woman -- are recovering this morning after being hit by a car in the parking lot of an 'in-n-out' burger in mill valley. it happened after a pickup truck veered off highway 101... went through a fence and hit six other cars. the pregnant woman and the driver of the truck are in critical condition. police believe the driver who crashed had some type of medical emergency. ( mark ) happening now... police in san francisco are looking for a thief caught on camera stealing packages. in the video you can see the man ring the buzzer of the building. witnesses say he

was posing as a u-p-s delivery man. once in the building he steals a number of packages and then takes off on his bike. ( mark ) in the east bay... city officials in fremont are responding to new statistics that show rising crime in the city. according to the f-b-i, violent crime in the city was up nearly 25 percent last year. and property crime increased about eight percent. fremont police say that many of the assaults in the city were between people who know each other and are not random attacks. they also say that robberies are down significantly from where they were more than 10 years ago. city officials say they have included money for more officers in their latest budget. ( darya ) a state senator from the south bay is working to stop guns from being stolen from law enforcement in the bay area. four guns have been stolen from officer's cars in less than two months. state senator jerry hill wants maximum penalties against any officer who fails to follow the rules on gun storage. hill says he is looking for ways to strengthen laws that require police

( mark ) president trump is issuing a new warning to north korea. the president says the united states is "totally prepared" to use what he calls "the military option" this comes after north korean leader kim jong un repositioned fighter jets and missiles on the country's east coast. this is seen as a response to american bombers

( darya ) new this morning... oakland is trying to set up temporary shelters for the city's homeless population before the rainy season begins. mayor libby schaaf is asking the city council to approve an "outdoor navigation center." it would provide up to 40 people with portable "tuff shed" housing and social services while they wait for permanent housing. it would be the first of up to 3 similar centers in the city. schaaf says she wants to move people off the street and into safe, secure locations. the proposal is expected to go before the full council in october. (darya) nevada's parole board is saying it did not consider o.j. simpson's 19-89 conviction for misdemeanor spousal abuse when granting his release from prison.

( darya ) happening now... firefighters are working to contain a wildfire that forced the evacuation of dorms at cal poly san louis obispo. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon. it quickly spread to nearly 100 acres and is just 20 percent contained this morning. all evacuation orders have been lifted. were shot while trying to arrest a man accused of killing his girlfriend and her daughter. i've been here 27 years, 25 years as a sworn officer. never been shot before. never had to shoot at anyone.the suspect was on the run.....when martin and his fellow officer spotted him in south sacramento, they tried to pull him over. seconds later, a barrage of bullets. the man exiting the cat and turning immediately and opening fire on usthe suspect started firing....... the other officer was hit in the leg. martinús was hit too..... his body armor vest stopped a bullet..... shock and wow. i've been shotit was a sharp pain, very stinging pain. and i wasn't sure right away where i was hit.i actually back pedaled and then i fell down and rolled to cover behind the car because i didn't know if i was still gonna take fire. within moments, both officers including others who got to the scene shot back at the suspect and killed him. immediately afterwards, i

( mark ) construction has begun on eight prototype walls at a border crossing with mexico in southern california. the purpose of the walls is to help officials figure out what types of walls might work best at different locations along the u-s border with mexico. all of the prototypes will be between eighteen and thirty feet tall. officials set up a "free speech zone" near the construction area for protesters. ( mark ) the prototypes are being paid for with twenty million dollars from the department of homeland security. congress has not authorized any money for an actual border wall to be constructed. ( mark ) happening today... the man accused of sexually abusing children in the north bay will be in court. 39-year-old kevin thorpe is a former counselor at a center for at-risk boys in sonoma county. he is charged with 15 counts of sex abuse of a child. officials say thorpe molested two young boys several times between 2006 and 20-11. thorpe worked at the hanna boys center in sonoma. police believe that is where some of the crimes took place. thorpe is expected to enter a plea at today's hearing. ( darya ) in the south bay a fire near an elementary school destroys a two story home. that fire broke out on chisin street just off yerba buena avenue. that is near the james franklin smith

( darya ) the woman who's two daughters died last year when she crashed her car in petaluma has been arrested. alejandra hernandez was in court yesterday for the death of her seven and nine-year-old daughters last august. hernandez was driving the girls to school when she swerved off the road and crashed in the petaluma river. the mother was able to escape unharmed but the two girls were trapped in the car and died. hernandez is facing a string of charges including vehicular manslaughter and child endangerment. it is unclear why it took so long to charge hernandez. ( darya ) firefighters have saved nearly two- thousand homes from a wildfire burning near anaheim. they hosed down trees that were in flames.. and they got some help from the weather. winds sent flames away from neighborhoods. the canyon fire has burned more than two-

thousand acres and is now 15- percent contained. last night... evacuees returned home. firefighters expect this fire to be fully contained by sunday.
