5:00 pm
"...worst one" this is the bay area news station. kron 4 news starts now with breaking news. >> obviously it would be good to be able to return home that my home with still be there in my neighborhood in town.
5:01 pm
>> this is definitely the worst one expect the death toll from the north bay firestorms continues to rise as crews are working around the clock trying to get the upper hand on two dozen fires burning just in the north bay expanding into northern california. good evening and welcome to our special coverage of the deadly firestorms. i am grant lodes . >> and i am steve aveson. 3500 homes and businesses have been destroyed and we have learned this afternoon that over 2800 of those homes lost were in santa rosa. right now there are 400 people who remain unaccounted for in sonoma county alone in the sheriff's office is using cadaver dogs to search for those people. we know more than 170,000 acres
5:02 pm
have burned, and that number could rise as there is very little containment in this particular fire. >> it is producing a lot of smoke coming down into the rest of the bay area. we have been trying to orient you little bit to show you the scope of the threat we are facing right now. i want to dial you in to some of the most concerning areas for cal fire. geyserville is in north along 101 right here but there is concern that this fire could creep down as the northerly winds continue and you can see river rock casino and number two is calistoga with a mandatory evacuation order. number three is downtown sonoma right near the square where in mandatory evacuation order went into effect for the outskirts of sonoma and the eastern part.
5:03 pm
not downtown. that is still open for business in some cases. out here we are seeing mandatory evacuation orders and also middletown which was devastated by the valley fire could be in the crosshairs again in santa rosa has some new evacuation advisory issue. so many neighborhoods have been destroyed especially the coffey park neighborhood. look at this map. this is what cal fire has produced most recently. we will continue to track this looking at the alice fire getting closer and closer along the eastern side as well as field on interstate 80. steve, this is something i know ÷úoto get a against and we will check in with that throughout the night . vúapso much.
5:04 pm
we appreciate it. just to underscore how bad it has been in santa [ñrosa, the home of charles schultz has been lost. his widow has been safely escorted but here is what we are looking at now. there is new orders for the eastern part of santa rosa and it is the area in blue that is the voluntary evacuation area. the rest are mandatory. crews are searching tonight our bodies in many of the homes ravaged by the firestorm and kron 4's maureen kelly found this imaging equipment. many of the homes they are searching have been turned into virtual piles of ash. it is a slow process, but they are extremely thorough. >> so we go through the scene
5:05 pm
very meticulously probing it because these houses to have basements and we do not want our people to fall through. we also bring cadaver dogs because we have houses that have been reduced to three inches high so we do not know what is underneath that or what hotspots are there. so we use a thermal imager before we go through the them. >> police have confirmed at least 15 people have died with about 400 others so far reported missing. officials expect the number to rise. >> there is an advisory for people to evacuate in parts of the city of napa. here is a map to really dial you in. the area with the lines through it is where people are being told to be ready for a moments notice. when it becomes mandatory, you need to leave. the area in red is where the atlas fire has burned extending
5:06 pm
south along highway 12 in east all the way to the solano county line and it is a pretty big area including hagan road and coombsville road with parts of east avenue and terrace drive. it also includes people east of silverado trail and highway 221. people in that area are being told to be ready to leave at a moments notice. this was near highway 221 east of the napa river looking at the atlas fire which is a monster. it has destroyed roughly 200 homes and is still threatens 5000 additional homes and at least two people have died. they fear that number will rise burning 43,000 acres and containment only 3%. atlas fire certainly still raging tonight even as they bring in more and more resources
5:07 pm
. >> kron 4's gabe slate just spoke with cal fire and he has an explanation about what areas could be in trouble and what firefighters are concerned about the most. >> the city of napa is here and interstate 80 comes along here. this fire is burning toward jamison county right now. in solano county they are still under threat because of hot fires still burning with the potential for northerly winds. that is why we are still not comfortable allowing people back into those areas yet. we have less activity living on the left by this fire east of napa and so those buyers are beginning to be reduced connectivity. along the east side of the fire there is still quite a bit of heat. fortunately we were able to get a great deal of increased
5:08 pm
number firefighters that came in last night. in oregon, idaho, and arizona those are really going to help us let people back in as soon as possible. yesterday we had some predictions of high winds and we were all thinking back to sunday when they were blowing so heavily that is what initiated this entire fire. fortunately, they did materialize but not to the strength of sunday night. the materialized on some of those ridge tops but not on others so it was less intensive than it was on sunday. with the extras we had on the ground we were able to keep that fire spread to a minimum. i think with the more favorable wind conditions in the
5:09 pm
personnel i think we will be seen higher containment numbers and get a upperhand on this as quickly as possible. >> with the fires threatening napa the downtown area turned into a virtual ghost town.>> kron 4's rob fladeboe is there and rob, you have covered so many fires. what is this one compared like? do you see people carrying on like normal? >> they are trying. you can see a fair amount of traffic behind me on highway 29 with people trying to go about their business. as you have been talking about the nagging sense that still more evacuations will be in for napa and let's take a look at the video.
5:10 pm
particularly down at the napa city center and then napa towncenter on any other given thursday afternoon in october during harvest time it would be jammed but the tourists are staying away and locals are too. the minimize the smoke if you will and some offering free pancakes and coffee. taurus are staying away. i did see a pair of couples and another from michigan about the fire but decided to come anyway. for the most part the locals are worried that the catastrophe is far from over. let's hear from a couple of them. >> is more clear today than it has been all week. it is actually looking up here.
5:11 pm
from my perspective you can see blue sky, which we have not seen since monday. >> we are waiting to see if the wind changes and if it does we are probably going to be evacuated. >> are you getting a little tired of this smoke? expect this whole town is mostly empty. i have never seen it like this. >> we are just waiting to go. we got bags packed and and motorhome and we have put some stuff in it. it is ready to go. we got to go across town to our daughter's house across town here a little more insight in town. who knows, outside of town maybe the fire is on the other side too.
5:12 pm
it seems like it. it is a little scary. on the upside the smoke doesn't seem to come and go. we have seen a few patches of blue skies. napa completely surrounded by smoke. it does not look like folks are going to be able to put these facemasks away anytime soon. rob fladeboe , kron 4 news. >> rob, what is it like getting into certain neighborhoods? >> reporter: it all depends. the city center seems to be okay. when you get on to the perimeter at silverado trail there are a lot of roadblocks in hardiman avenue down toward we went to one there is some backups in a rush hour traffic
5:13 pm
starting to build and some frustration to go along with it in the city center traffic seems to be moving okay. >> rob fladeboe in napa, thank you. >> if you like to see all of the mandatory advisories as they relate to evacuation orders you can check them out on our website at www.kron4.com. kron 4's mobile app is also sending push alerts to people every time we get information about a shift in the wind or in the community being told to leave. if you have not signed up for push alerts on the kron 4 mobile app, it is a great time to do so and it is a free download. coverage of the firestorms continue right after this.

s. welcome to our breaking coverage. the sonoma county sheriff's office is expanding its mandatory evacuations. north of east napa street from fourth street east to the end of east napa street and a reminder that seventh street east and council road is already under a mandatory evacuation. people in the sonoma are still trying to deal with the uncertainty. >> and the fact it seems to be closing in on the downtown area it is disconcerting for someone he. kron 4's danny freeman has been talking to folks in and around the historic plaza and that is a place that the locals are certainly familiar with and a place they spend a lot of time. what is it like talking to people who know that in some cases the fire is just 1 mile or two away?
5:17 pm
>> reporter: it is definitely frightening for a lot of people. i will say many of those who are residents of the city of sonoma say perhaps some of this is overblown but then when you go and see the smoke coming over the hills into downtown then the reality starts to set in. i just wanted to give you a look at this again. you were in san francisco all day and very present actually in the 4:00 hour a piece of ash fell into my mouth as i was speaking. shops are closed and restaurants and hotels are closed here in sonoma. >> kids playing on the swings both swings and there would be a lot of people walking around with buses that come here for tours and the wine tasting rooms would befall. it is just not the same. >> reporter: largely empty

fire trucks like the one that just drove past me and other than that i am on lincoln and the main streets in town it is a ghost town right now is good. a little earlier i was 4 miles north on highway 29 and on the west side maybe a quarter-mile or less. although it looks like everything has burned up to the highway the flames are approaching the henry and then jumping. since it is getting close enough firefighters are doing their own burnout right on the grass as it goes up to the gravel of highway 29 and that way all of the fuel will be taken up and it should be a natural firebreak. they are hoping to make highway 29 at that point one of the containment lines. >> we have this map and grant can talk on the screen right

least as far as i can tell with the vineyards but on the other side of 29 you have jericho canyon and wine company with amici sellers on the east side of 29. certainly they will make a stand 29 is the face to do it. we should tell people that this map gets updated every so often but the fire has certainly crept in here beyond the napa river which you see here right up to highway 29 in this area with maybe 5 miles north of the city of calistoga. >> as grant continues to publish the map giving a better sense of where you are, cal fire has been very careful about deploying resources so clearly they are making a big stand because they think they can push back. describe how many people were out and what kind of support
5:40 pm
did they have? >> first of all, the firefighters i talked to was from contra costa county with these other agencies helping cal fire and the local agencies as well. i would say there were at least five trucks out there and then they had the big heavy equipment as well that was going down and firefighters are digging out and making the fire line. i saw two or three of those heavy machines going out as well. it doesn't seem like a concentrated effort. what i do not know is i arrived at the base camp and i do not know how much further north that is reaching the highway from the one spot that i was in so i don't know if they are fighting it from a half mile stretch or maybe just a few hundred yards but you can tell that they are putting resources
