( james ) we are following two breaking news stories this morning. first on the left... firefighters making progress on the wildfires in the north bay. and on the right of your screen... a new wildfire breaks out in santa cruz county forcing evacuations this morning. that fire broke out around 11:00 last night and fire fighters are reporting that it started as a structure fire. the fire is burning on bear creek canyon road near boulder creek. fire fighters say it is spreading fast. an evacuation center has been setup at the boulder creek elementary school. ( james ) good morning and thanks

for joining us. i'm james fletcher.( robin ) and i'm robin winston. we have a crew on the way to the fire in the santa cruz mountains... we will get the latest from them as soon as they get there.( james ) but first we want to update you on the fires burning in the north bay. this morning more evacuation orders are being lifted as firefighters continue to make progreling the firestorm. the 'nuns fire' in napa and sonoma counties has burned more than 51-thousand acres ... and it is now 53-percent contained. ( robin ) the 'atlas fire' in napa

and solano counties has burned just over 51-thousand acres as well... and is 70- percent contained. the 'tubbs fire' burning in napa county... has burned more than 36-thousand acres, and it is now 75-percent contained. and the 'pocket fire' burning north of geyserville in sonoma county, has burned more than 12-thousand acres.. and is just 45-percent contained.( james ) and new this morning evacuation orders have been lifted in the cities of geyserville and portions of healdsburg that were being threatened by the pocket fire. (james) ( robin ) now we want to get a check of weather with any hong. (anny hong): after two very warm days, a gradual cooling

trend is forecast for today and tomorrow. the pattern will then change as a system drops down from the north and brings generally light rainfall to parts of the area late thursday into friday.

( robin ) we continue to follow our breaking news... the deadly north bay firestorm. the last week has not been easy for firefighters. many of the local firefighters had to evacuate their homes and then battle the fire in their own communities. the progess being made is thanks to the

work of thousands of firefighters locally and from around the state. the crews say they feel good about the progress... but they know the threat is not over. ( robin ) cal fire says fire crews are making a lot more progress now that winds have died down. ( james ) in santa rosa, boil water notices are still in effect for parts of the fountaingove and oakmont areas until further notice. this applies to people who live east of mendocino avenue in the fountaingrove neighborhood. north of chanate road... west of fountaingrove parkway... and south of mark west springs road. as for oakmont... the areas effected are:

white oak drive south of madelyne court... including madelyne place. and oak mesa drive south of starry knoll court... including shooting star place. ( james ) in santa rosa--- medical personnel have been working around the clock at the santa rosa memorial hospital tending to hundreds of fire victims( robin ) some of those hospital workers also lost their homes. but as kron-4's dan kerman shows us... that hasn't stopped them from helping others with kaiser and sutter hospitals closed due to the fire, santa rosa memorial has been pulling triple duty since the fires broke outnot surprisingly medical staff were among those who lost their homes in the fire more than 130 caregivers at this hospital alone.. among those who lost their homes was registered nurse cambria reese she was already on the nightshift when she realized the family home was right in the fire's path.sotshe couldn't reach her parents for several hours.. but continued

on the jobsot cambria reese/registered nurse 37-47 eventually she heard her parents had evacuated safely days later word the house had been destroyed. something she would share with some patients sotand through it all reese like many of her collegues continued coming to work to help otherssotstandup dan kerman/santa rosa 148-158

std/159 ( robin ) this morning we are getting a closer look at some of the damage caused by the fires in santa rosa... including one home that was destroyed in the fountaingrove neighborhood.( james ) kron 4's j-r stone spoke with the owners who now have to rebuild. ( james ) this morning we continue to hear stories of heroism during the deadly north bay firestorm.( robin ) one woman says her home was saved thanks to the help of a volunteer firefighter. kron 4's spencer blake has her story. (pkg)alexis padis is safe at her family's jewelry store in san francisco, but she's constantly checking progression of the napa wildfires."so the patrick fire started coming towards us on this side, and then the other fire started coming from the north from mount veeder, and it's actually still coming at us."that's because her family's home and vineyard on dry creek roadis technically right inside one of the evacuation zonesand it's right in between two fires. look what they saw last sunday night when they first evacuated.they thought their

homes was gone, but went back tuesday to find it untouched. harvested grapes were already safe in a cellar, and padis started grabbing other important family items.but jim anderson, from sonoma, ultimately helped save their home itself."as the fires got closer and closer, we were going, 'anything we could do to help save the house and save the vineyard and he came up and basically helped us with the crisis and helped us avert it."the padises had gotten an email about a gel-based fire retardant you can apply on your own home with a hose.anderson was the volunteer firefighter who got the product for free from a distributor, but then he did more, helping padis apply it in key points on the home.he also covered vents, cut down dangerous tree branches - anything to create defensible space."i promised my mom. part of the deal - she didn't want me to go up there - but i promised her that i wouldn't stay the night. and jim offered, he literally spent the night in his truck and watched out for the fire, kept an eye out, met our neighbors, and just truly was a guardian angel."and now, three days later, the home and vineyard are still here, even though

flames are still burning nearby.anderson wouldn't accept payment for his service. so the padises are going to have him over for a big family dinner to put a face to the home he helped save. ( robin ) that was spencer blake reporting this morning... we spoke with the volunteer firefighter last night. he says he is now helping protect his sisters' homes in sonoma and sebastopol. ( james ) some wineries and vineyards in the north bay have suffered heavy damage in the firestorm.(ááárobinááá) some say the harvest was nearly complete when the fires hit the north bay. the wineries along silverado trail in napa valley were severely damaged. sig-nor-ello estate was one of at least a dozen wineries affected by the wildfire. the winery's tasting room... offices... kitchen... and an apartment were all burned down. but 45- acres of cabernet sauvignon grapes .. and other varieties were not damaged but the estate winemaker is worried about the 2017 vintage.

but i was not able to them for a week. i hope nothing went wrong, but you know when you have them in fermentation you need to attend the wine day by day and check we finish fermentation. i don't know what happened last week, i need to assess".> (ááárobinááá) the power was still out monday, and that means no electricity to run pumps and cooling systems. fortunately most of the winery's inventory is stored off site. the winemaker says 95-percent of the harvest was complete before the fire. (ááá2-shotááá)(robin) and as the north bay firestorm enters its 9th day... a santa rosa family is looking for a sheriff's deputy who stayed behind to make sure they were safe. ( james ) kron 4's ella sogomonian is in sonoma county with their story. jennifer arrington and her son tommy narrowly escaped the tubbs fire as it ripped through their neighborhood last sunday.their home was miraculously spared but their neighborhood on mark west springs road mostly looks like thissot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee// " i see some of the pictures of the cars and the driveways and i'm

afraid to think that would have been us."the arringtons are two of about thirty neighbors who were quarraled into this parking lot early that morning at mark west lodge as flames made their way directly toward them.they credit three fire engines and a sonoma county sheriffs deputy for staying with them all five hours keeping everyone calm.sot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee // "because we pretty much engulfed that was the only option pretty much so they were really good about making us feel safe and had clear plans on what to do." they were finally led to safety by a second deputy but never got to give their thanks. so they're hoping to find him and show their gratitude in person. sot: sot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee // "thank you, thank you a lot. we couldn't be here without them. so we're trying to find the one especially that was in the parking lot with us the deputy sheriff."a viewer has since called kron 4 with contact information for the deputy that's been relayed to the arringtons who will hopefully get in touch.in sonoma county ella sogomonian kron 4 news. district attorney's office is keeping a close eye on reports of price gouging. kron four has received a few tips from people about hotels and gas stations raising their prices significantly during the fires. the district attorney's office says so far the businesses in the county have been supportive and overly generous. but it will go after those that break the rules. since the governor declared a state of emergency, it is illegal to raise prices more than 10- percent. ( james ) another big story we are following this morning... jury selection is underway in the kate steinle murder case. jose ines garcia zarate... who also goes by the name juan francisco lopez-sanchez ... is accused of killing steinle in july of 2015 at pier 14 in san francisco. he had been deported five times and the shooting sparked a nationwide debate over immigration and sanctuary city policies. the jury will be chosen from a pool of 160 potential jurors. (robin) in the east bay... we have learned the identity of a 13-year-old boy shot and

killed last week in oakland. the boy was a student at frick impact academy. school officials say, he was anibal andres ramirez... and lived in oakland. the shooting happened on seminary avenue, near foothill boulevard, on tuesday night. no word on whether any arrests have been made.. (robin) san francisco police are looking for the man they say kidnapped a woman sunday morning. it happened just before nine am on van ness avenue near post street. witnesses say the woman was walking south on van ness when a nissan pulled up. according to police... a man grabbed her by the arm and threw her in the back of the car. the car then took off with the woman inside. no word if the woman has been found. police do not have a detailed description of the kidnapper. more on our breaking news as wildfires continue to burn across the north bay. 88 people are still missing after the deadly fires in sonoma county.( robin ) search and rescue crews are still searching for bodies. kron 4's terisa estacio has the latest from the coffey park neighborhood in santa rosa. i am here at the intersection of coffey lane and hopper lane and behind me complete devastation. so many homes mere shadows of what they once were right now, therlocate the dozens missing - (estacio reporting) it is grim and harsh work. these search and rescue workesr tasked with the dreadful job of going through the ash to locate missing mothers, fathers, aunts uncles loved ones still missing after the tubbbs fir ripped through neighbors here in santa rosa. this crew, from all over the bay area carefully looked into melted cars, behind crumbled walls that used to make up homes.

shirlee zane. it is very troubling times. shirlee zane is a sonoma county supervisor and former mental health specialist - she says now is the time to offer as much campassion as possible to those awaiting word about missing family members and friends. zane. the emotions are raw, just listen. sonoma county sheriff. the numbers are down but still we have 88 missing - anyone reported, we are taking seriously and putting into a count. sonoma's sheriff says they won't stop deploying these teams until every missing person is accounted for - besides crews - dogs were also brought in to help with trying to go through each and every home to ma ere near coffey park, te

( james ) homes and businesses are not the only things destroyed by the north bay firestorm... some schools must also rebuild.( robin ) kron 4's gabe slate was at one of those schools as people began sifting through the rubble. ((pkg)) angie weems is digging through the rubble where her desk used to be. she is the principal of redwood adventist academy in santa rosa off mark west springs road. a k through 12 school that was completely destroyed by the fire. this is her first time being back on the grounds since it burned.. sound from angie weems / principal redwood adventist academy elementary schoolthis is the neighborhood she is talking about hundreds of houses around the school off mark west springs road. gone all burned down sound from angie weems / principal redwood adventist academy

elementary schoolthe school is going to resume classes at a local church temporarily begining on wednesday. they are going to rebuild the school in the same spot.. they think a good omen that their rock sign that welcomes people to the school off the main road survived but their name redwood is what it's really about.

( james ) in napa county mandatory evacuation for the berryessa highlands community have been lifted. the evacuated area was at state highway 128 from silverado trail... to the napa county line at monticello dam. orders are also lifted for wooden valley raod at the napa-solano county line. and for monticello road at state route 121. ( james ) the mandatory evacuation order in mendocino county has also been lifted. all 8-thousand people evacuated from homes there are now allowed to return to their home. mendocino county supervisor rob brown says that recovery could take decades. ( james ) and as more evacuation orders get lifted... there is some information people in santa rosa need to know 'before' returning to their homes.( robin ) if the evacuation order is lifted, only people who live in that area are allowed into

their neighborhoods. the neighborhoods can be visited between ten- a-m and five p-m. there will be registration locations where you can get a re-entry pass, but you must have a form of identificiation. ( james ) you also must wear protective clothing and closed- toe shoes ... before going to your property. re-entry kits and debris bins will be provided for people who want to search their properties and assess damage. insurance specialists will also be available to help with documenting and filing claims. ( james ) some of the people beign allowed to return home were at a shelter in american canyon when word came that the evacuation order was lifted. (robin) kron4's haaziq madyun caught up with one of those former evacuees ... outside of her home in calistoga. calistoga residents are happy to return home now that the mandatory evacuation order has been liftednat/sot haaziqhow does it feel to be back home?

wonderful. it feels so good. when we got the notice yesterday at the evacuation center in american canyon, everybody just, all of the calistoga folks said yay! we were clapping! we were so excited we didn't wait to hear the rest of the news they had to tell us">nat/sot haaziqthe last time i saw you, you weren't so sure what you were going to find when you came back home

( james ) the town of calistoga is slowly coming back to life now that the mandatory evacuation order has been lifted.( robin ) kron4's maureen kelly was in calistoga where some of the town's businesses were finally starting to reopen. nats (cork pop)one calistoga tasting room was pouring for tourists.happy to have customers.and even happy to see the postal worker drop off mailit's the little thingsa stroll down the town's main artery found many business dark..with signs in the window explaining there are closed because of the fires outside the pacifico restaurant a sandwich board reads we're open and thank you firefighters.but at the height of the lunch rush during at the tail end of what is normally the wine crush seasonthe tables outside are empty. the manager says they are serving a limited menu and much of his staff havent returned to work.but some merchants could be seen straignting up and cleaning

up.happy to see each other.and happy to be back at work.even is business is slow .bitethe calmart opened right when the evaucation order was lifted sunday afternoonwith some hardy employees coming in early to stock.so weary residents had a place to get provisions.after so many days of being out of their homes. maureen kelly kron4 news (james) coming up on the

( james ) thousands of firefighters are battling the fires in the north bay they're working 24-hour shifts under difficult conditions.( robin ) this morning we're taking you behind the scenes to show you where they get their assignments... where they eat and try to get some sleep. kron 4's justine waldman takes a look.

(ááá2-shotááá) (robin) police from all around the bay area have been tasked with keeping the areas affected by the firestorm free from looters.( james ) kron4's stanley roberts has the story. hi ma'am you can't be in this area, ok im leaving right now i was in santa rosa with the san francisco police department i'm with sargent russel who is on looter patrol hoever the issue she comes across more than looters are people who often make their way into the restricted areas for various reasons where you trying to go, (right there) out house is right by that fence right there) i'll be more than happy to take a photo with youofficers drive all over the closed areas to keep non-essential personnel

out for several reasons, there are still lots of down power lines and basically it's just not safe it's interesting to see life go on as normal like here on wikiup road where mail is still being delivered even in the burned out areas as much as the police would like to permit residents into the restricted area their orders are to keep the area clear until its safe im gonna have to ask you guys to get out of this area for a little bit . this couple wanted to open a safe so she could see if here wedding ring survived the firewe can't have anybody digging in the rubble because we got power lines down so its just not safe right now the couple apparenlty walked thought all this debris to debris to get to what was left of their home i'm just trying to find my wedding band which is suppose to be in there so sgt russel made an excutive

decisionwe'er going to have people here patrolling to make sure no one messes with that safe of but for now i'm going to have to escort you out there were so many people walking around and sifting through debris that the sergeant was wondering if the restrictions had been released i just want to confirm that the area of pacific heights kay dee lee way, gene maria drive that whole area we'er getting several residents their house is all gone but they are coming going thought the houses to look for what's ever left i just want to confirm that they are not allowed in at this time (that confirmed we are not letting anyone into the burned area at this time) so the sonoma county sheriff's office dispatched more units to keep everyone out of the restricted areas apprarenty there was some sort of a mix up with one of the community informations systems which may have given out incomplete information causing some residents to head into the restricted areas i'm here to take everyody back out because it's not safe in here in santa rosa stanley roberts kron 4 news (james) and here's a live look outside...from the sutro cam.

for the kate steinle murder case is underway. jose zarate is accused of fatally shooting steinle in july of 20-15 along pier- 14 in san francisco. zarate has admitted to shooting steinle. but he has pleaded not guilty. he says the shooting was an accident. the gun used in the shooting was stolen out of car belonging to a bureau of land management ranger. zarate was in this country illegally. he had previously been deported five- times back to mexico. steinle's killing touched off a fierce debate over immigration and sanctuary city policies. ( darya ) help has been made available to home and business owners impacted by the north bay wildfires.officials say fire victims in napa and sonoma counties are eligible for mortage relief if their mortage is owned by federal home loan company freddie mac. through this federal assistance program ... the mortage company is authorized to suspend mortage payments for up to 12 months ... waive

the assessment of penalties or late fees against homeowners ... and suspend reporting forbearance or late payments caused by the wildfires. ( darya ) as fire crews gain the upper hand on the north bay fires... evacuation orders are being lifted.( james ) there is some information neighbors need to know before returning to their homes. only people who live in that area are allowed into their neighborhoods. the neighborhoods can be visited

between ten- a-m and five p-m. there will be registration locations where you can get a re-entry pass... but you must have a form of identificiation. you also must wear protective clothing and closed- toe shoes. re-entry kits and debris bins will be provided for people who want to search their properties and assess damage. support services will be available in each neighborhood. insurance specialists will also be available to help with documenting and filing claims. ( darya ) breaking news... a wildfire in the santa cruz mountains near boulder creek is spreading -- forcing 150 evacuations. right now 125 acres have burned and 100 homes are threatened. officials say the fire started as a house fire and spread to nearby brush. ( robin )

of the seven sonoma county post offices that were closed due to wildfires will reopen. the sonoma post office at 6-17 broadway, the post office on eighth street in vineburg, the boyes hot springs post office off the sonoma highway, and the el verano post office on bay street are all reopening. the sonoma post office will have adjusted hours today -- it will be open from noon to 7 tonight. mail from the glen ellen, kenwood, and eldridge offices will continue to be routed through petaluma. ( james ) and... businesses are slowly reopening in calistoga. a tasting room poured wine for tourists. postal workers delievered mail. and pacifico restaurant had a sandwich board out front that read -- we're open and thank you firefighters.

(darya) in napa -- well into last week -- the padis family had already evacuated from their home and vineyard on dry creek road. they live right between the areas affected by the patrick fire and the atlas peak fire. at one point they could see flames coming over the hill. they put their harvested grapes in their cellar, hoping they might survive. last friday -- alexis padis was contacted by someone offering to spray her home with a gel-based fire retardant. a company rep in sonoma -- who is also a volunteer firefighter -- went above and beyond giving her

the property-saving chemical. (darya) they put the gel on strategic points on the house, and it's still standing this morning, despite damage to other properties in the area. according to padis -- company rep james anderson -- spent the night in his truck keeping an eye on the property so she could go back to her parents in san francisco. ( james ) a petaluma woman is

behind bars this morning ... on suspicion of stealing mail and committing fraud against santa rosa fire evacuees. katie lehnhard was arrested after a mail theft victim reported fraudulent charges on her bank account. using a cancelled check ... police tracked down lehnhard and found she had credit cards and checkbooks belonging to santa rosa fire evacuees staying at local shelters. police believe the items were stolen from cars left behind in burned down neighborhoods. (james) (james) despite widespread despite despite widespread

concerns over looting during the north bay wildfires, there have been few reports of looting actually occuring. according to the napa county district attorney, strong law enforcement prescence around the perimeter of the fires has been an effective deterrent for criminal activity. there have been less than five arrests of suspected looters in the county since the fires began nine days ago. 3 people were arrested on suspicion of looting in sonoma county over the weekend. but reports in that county have been minimal as well. ( darya ) the last week has not been easy for firefighters. many had to evacuate their own homes... and battle the fire in their own communities. the progess being made is thanks to the work of thousands of firefighters locally and from across the state. crews say they feel good about the progress.. but know the

threat is not over. fire crews will continue the tedious and exhausting battle.. until the fires are out. california sanctions on wells fargo for setting up millions of bogus accounts will remain in place for a second year. state treasureer john chiang made the announcement monday -- saying wells fargo has made modest progress, but fallen far short of restoring public trust. in august, wells fargo acknowledged its employees set up 3-and-a-half million unathorized bank and credit card accounts. they've also recently admitted to charging nearly a half-

california will no longer be allowed to bring guns onto school campuses. governor brown signed a law banning guns at all schools in the state.(darya) this new law overturns a previous one that let teachers with concealed weapons permits bring guns onto school property. more than 200 school shootings have happened in the united states over the past four years. (james) the new law goes into effect in january 2018. ( james ) governor brown

has also signed a bill allowing california drivers to choose their gender on their driver's lincense. this is the state's latest effort to support the l-g-b-t community... if they don't wish to identify as a male or female.(darya) california now joins oregon in allowing a gender-neutral option on driver's licenses and state i-d's. it will also make it easier for people to change their names and genders on their birth certificates. from the toll to 101 (darya) one week after fleeing from fast moving flames, a santa rosa family is looking for a sheriffs deputy who stayed behind to make sure they were safe. (james) kron 4's ella sogomonian has more from sonoma county. jennifer arrington and her son tommy narrowly escaped the tubbs fire as it ripped through their neighborhood last sunday.their home was miraculously spared but their neighborhood on mark west springs road mostly looks like thissot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee// " i see some of the pictures of the cars and the driveways and i'm afraid to think that would have been us."the arringtons are two of about thirty

neighbors who were quarraled into this parking lot early that morning at mark west lodge as flames made their way directly toward them.they credit three fire engines and a sonoma county sheriffs deputy for staying with them all five hours keeping everyone calm.sot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee // "because we pretty much engulfed that was the only option pretty much so they were really good about making us feel safe and had clear plans on what to do." they were finally led to safety by a second deputy but never got to give their thanks. so they're hoping to find him and show their gratitude in person. sot: sot: jennifer arrington, tubbs fire evacuee // "thank you, thank you a lot. we couldn't be here without them. so we're trying to find the one especially that was in the parking lot with us the deputy sheriff."a viewer has since called kron 4 with contact information for the deputy that's been relayed to the arringtons who will hopefully get in touch.in sonoma county ella sogomonian kron 4 news.v ( darya ) coming up on the kron four morning news... finding hope in the
