nats (helicopters battle fire) seven helicopters,a couple of fixed wing aircraft and at least 250 firefighters are battling the the bear fire here in the santa cruz mountains. the fire is burning in typically steep, heavily wooded terrain northeast of bear creek road. five firefighters suffered minor injuries, most from falling down. as in most

(grant) and fire crews were called to the scene of another fire - this one in sausalito... near highway 101. it started just before noon... just north of spencer avenue. the flames forced chp officers to shutdown all southbound lanes of highway 101. two lanes have since reopened. evacuation orders were put in place - but have since been lifted. it burned about four acres and is now under control. (vicki) we are tracking a fast-moving fire burning in the east bay - that has now prompted mandatory evacuations. the fire broke out in dublin around 2 this afternoon in the vicinity of tassajara and fallon raods. it's burned about 100- acres. there is a mandatory evacuation order for

the following streets... signal hill east of fallon... to coh hill terrace to saddle creek terrace... the fire is 20-percent contained. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as soon as we learn more. (grant) firefighters continue to make progress on the series of destructive fires that have been burning since early last week in the north bay. (vicki) here are the latest numbers from the fire line. the nuns fire in napa and sonoma counties has burned more than 52-thousand acres and is 68- percent contained. the atlas fire in napa and solano counties has burned just over 51-thousand acres and is 77- percent contained. the tubbs fire burning in napa county has burned more than 36- thousand acres, and it is 82-percent contained. and the pocket fire burning north of geyserville in sonoma county has burned nearly 12-thousand acres and is now 58-percent contained. in total, firefighters are battling 16 large fires across the state burning more than 217-thousand acres.

orders are now being lifted for people in napa county. we learned yesterady, that people can now return to the circle oaks, wooden valley, and berryessa highlands communities. the evacuated area was at state highway 128 from silverado trail... to the napa county line at monitcello dam. however, the napa valley unified school district

will not reopen schools until at least next monday. that's due to ongoing air quality concerns related to the wildfires. (steve) tonight, we have learned the identity of the man who was killed yesterday - while battling the fire here in napa county. he has been identified as 38-year-old garrett paiz of missouri.... he was driving a water truck on oakville grade - when he lost control and overturned into a ravine. a facebook page identifies paiz as a firefighter with the noel fire department in southwest missouri. he was a privately owned water tender contracted by cal fire to fight the nuns fire. fire.

(vicki) santa rosa's fountaingrove neighborhood was ravaged by the fire. this video shows some of the many homes there that burned to the ground.(grant) but kron4's maureen kelly found one street that is still standing, thanks for a group of residents that banded together to keep their homes, and their neighbors' homes from being destroyed. i'm on lake park court and neighbors here on this cul de sac and some other neighbors living on the street above banded together to save approximently 22 homes in this area.not once, but three times over three days.this neighbor up on bicentenial way who owns a heavy equiptment rental place, got a portable water tank and a pump up here .and along with another

neighbor who's a retired firefighter and a handfull of homeowners ran water from this pool and beat back the fire burning on the hills around this areauntil firefighters arrived to help up midday monday .it was a big group efforts. with all the neighbors who came around and worked his teams together put now it's gone fires all over the property all the way to the down to the retirement home down there and all the neighbors banded together and worked in teams and they were running around and all working as a team making sure fires are being put out everywhere ricardo uribe had been away from his home when the fire destroyed other homes in the fountaingrove neighborhood and threatened his property..but he jumped in to help when the hill at the end of the cul de sac ignited on tuesday morning. by then, the impromptu fire brigade used fire hoses left behind by firefighters to help squelch those flames which threatened to take out the whole block and then some.if anything we saved was probably the convalescent home back here because the fire was starting again until we came in there with the hosespolice came trying to evacute this block again on tuesday night..when another fire that broke out to the east.but once again the

people knew this home...........built in 2003 on the south summit of the twin sisters peaks.. there's not much left except twisted metal and its concrete foundation.the glass house stood on twin sisters road in fairfield - close to the border of solano and napa counties. it was considered an architectural masterpiece - built in 2003 at a cost of roughly 17-million dollars. like so many other homes - it went up in flames late last week. when you see it 'before' the fire - you understand why it was so recognizable...it sat right on the top of the hill and had enormous glass walls and a hexagon shape. anyone who had a chance to get inside had stunning views of the area from every angle.. the home was spread across more than 13-thousand square feed...and included a helicopter pad... the current owners bought it in 2012. they live in texas and used the estate as a vacation home. they say they'll wait until the fires are completely

(vicki) our top story at 5:30... another wildfire breaks out in the bay area. (grant) a fire in the santa cruz mountains is prompting evacuation orders tonight... as more and more people are returning home in the north bay . (grant) here is what we know right now. the fire broke out the fire now. the fire broke out around 10:30 last night in the area of bear creek canyon road. it started as a house fire and quickly spread to vegetation. so far we know the fire is just five- percent contained. it has burned 200 acres and destroyed four buildings. (vicki) evacuations are in place, and boulder creek elementary school is currently an evacuation center. officials say the steep, rugged terrain has been a

challenge, and several firefighters have been injured -- but not seriously. one firefighter had to be rescued early this morning after falling 50-feet down a ravine. (grant) a warning for people who need to rebuild after the north bay fires. be cautious of hiring un- licensed contractors. the contractors state license board is touring damaged neighborhoods to warn victims of the dangers of hiring people posing as contractors. the board has been puting up signs...this was earlier today.

(grant) a judge in hawaii has blocked the latest version of president trump's travel ban. u.s. district judge derrick watson granted hawaii request to temporarily block the federal government from enforcing the policyit was supposed to take effect at midnight wednesday. the trump administration's most recent restrictions affects citizens in chad, iran, libya, north korea, somalia, syria, and yemenand some venezuelan government officials and their families. hawaii argues the updated ban is a continuation of president trump's promise to quote...exclude muslims from the united states. (vicki) two senators have reached a deal "in principle" to restore obamacare cost-sharing reduction payments for two years. tennessee senator lamar alexander and washington senator patty murray have been working on the plan for weeks. president trump, when

open their doors again - after the north bay firestorm - including sutter hospital. the hospital reopened this morning for both inpatient and emergency care. kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke to officials about what it took to restore services. sutter regional back in operation..after historic wild fires forced the facility to shut down sunday.a surveillance video time lapse from that night shows the hospitalsurrounded by the blaze.employees sprung into action.. grabbing extinguishers and pushing the flames back until firefighters arrived on scene.kelsey claybrook was working that night.kelsey claybrook/security guard and first responderit's just a huge relief because obviously the night of when you are evacuating you don't know when we are going to be able to open or what the extent of the damage is. we are absolutely fortunate. it's good to see people in the building again. good to see everybody in the building again. just good to see everybody here again. there is a good upbeat attitude here

right now across the building. the hospital says 77 patients were evacuated safely over the course of six hours.lisa amador/sutter spokesperson: they went to local hospitals as well as our affiliates hospitals, novato community hospital. califiornia pacific medical center and alta bates. surveillance video shows people exiting and getting on buses.while employees were getting patients out...fire evacuees from the area arrived looking for shelter.the hospital says since that night, staff has been working around the clock to reopen the doors as quickly as possible. lisa amador/sutter spokesperson:it's been a really focused effort. we opened this brand new hospital 3 years ago and so it was like reopening the hospital. it took a lot of teams. we have a great support from sutter health, our network of hospitals and outpatient care services and physician organizations. we are so thrilled to be open to for this community at such a very very difficult time. but the recovery efforts are far from over.. as staff deals with personal losses from the fire. kelsey claybrook/security guard and first responder:you know a lot of stories shared and some people have absolutely experienced loss here so just learning about that, coping with that dealing with that.we've made it. the people that have lost are trying to get together. there

( grant ) there is another fire going right now in dublin... and we just learned 30 minutes ago all evacuation orders have been lifted. the fire is near tassajara road... to the north of interstate 580 and east of 680. the evacuation order came out just about an hour ago. this fire has burned already 180 acres... the alameda county fire department shared this image. containment is now up to 75-percent. kron four has a crew on the way and will bring you an update as we learn more. marin county fire department says there were three small fires...each no more than an acre or two. they briefly shutdown southbound 101... but all lanes are back open tonight. no word on what sparked the fires. ( pam ) here is the latest on the big fires going in the north bay. the 'tubbs fire' ... which has burned more than 36-thousand acres... is now 82-percent contained. the 'pocket fire' has grown to over 12-thousand acres... it is 58-percent contained tonight.( grant ) the largest fire is the nuns fire... it has burned close to 53-thousand acres... containment is at 68-percent. and firefighters are making headway with the atlas fire. it's burned 51-thousand acres and is now 77-percent contained. (pam) fire officials say, they are very happy to report that they are making progress in the north bay... over in the distance.. drones are flying - i am here just off of fountaingrove parkway - they are using the drones to check for hotspots i spoke with calfire officials today and although the forecase calls for rain and one would think that is good news it poses some potential risks to restart these deadly fires. estacio) these were flames from just off highway 12 near oakmont monday night. although crews were successful in beating back the flames by setting backfires, and getting people on the ground and bulldozers to start the fires from spreading there is a new concern on the horizon this is steve crawford from

calfire. steve crawford. rain is not always good, it can bring wind, and that could potential get these fires running again, and we could be looking at new fires again new fires would cetainly effect all of the work done so far and effect work by utility crews to replace critical infrastrutre to allow residents a chance to return home or to get into the burnned out areas to see if there was anything they could salvage.

one of the incredible stories of survival from the wildfires -- the husbandand wife in santa rosa who survived when the only place to turn was their backyard swimming pool... catherine heenan is here with more on daniel pomplun's story.... (catherine) the couple woke up around 1:30 am tuesday.........and realized that there wasa red glow outside their bedroom window.. the flames were so close - there was nowhere to run. this swimming pool would become their only option.. these are photos of daniel and cindy pomplun's pool from the washington post... they'd eventually spell out the words

"walk out" in stones...to let anyone knowthey were walking off the property. but that was only after spending a terrifying half hour huddled in their home as the fire raged by....and when it became clear that they were going to die if they didn't get out -- they jumpedinto their swimming pool. daniel says he got the idea from a t-v show. daniel pomplun: i actually something on television a long time ago about how to survive a wildfire. we tried to apply as many of the principles we learned from that show as we could. when the flames was at its worst, we would have to dunk down underneath the water, maybe every five seconds or so just to cool off, and then i take a breath or two and then dunk back down. and we did that for maybe 15 minutes, 20 minutes just to keep ourselves cool. their house collapsed....which they watched happening from the pool.they say they talked about what they were losing as

room after room of their 5-bedroom home was destroyed. but they survived.... and are now talking about whether to rebuild in the same spot or move somewhere else. thanks to daniel's boss they have temporary housing.....and say the reality of all this is still sinking in.... pam and grant? that's burning near the famed mount wilson observatory in los angeles. the fire started early this morning and quickly grew to a few dozen acres. crews spent the day dropping water and fire retardant on the mountainous terrain. no homes threatened...no evacuations ordered.however, the flames burned close to several television broadcast towers. fires broke out here around lake park court monday morning.a handful of homeowners stayed behind to fight the flames while their families evacuated.one was a retired firefighter.who helped quickly train his neighbors..to use garden hosese to beat back the flames burning the hillsides behind their property.another who lives on the street above..brought in a portable water tank and a pump.and used the water from his pool to fight the fires until firefighters showed up.one of the homeowners who came back after gettign his wife and kids to safety describes what it was like.bitea second fire broke out tuesday morning..at the end of the cul de sac..they used fire hoses left by the firefighters and tapped into the fireplugs.and think they were able to squelch the flames before it spread down the block.and over to a nearby convelscent home. the band of neighbors worked together when a third fire broke out that same night. in the end they estimate they

weather conditions are improving for firefighters. the winds have been very light. the sea breeze will stretch further on shore over the next few days and the humidity will switch from very dry to almos wet as early as tomorrow. on the satellite and radar you can see the clouds and showers moving into california. most of the rain will be south of monterey. we'll see increascing clouds as this system moves through tonight. on the satellite image you can see the storm developing in the gulf of alaska. this storm will bring a chance of showers late on thursday and into early friday. highs tomorrow will be cooler and in the 80s inland, 60s and 70s around the bay, with 50s to mid 60s at the coast. we will conitinue to cool over the next few days with partly cloudy skies tomorrow. thursday there is a chance of showers developing in the north bay and spreading south overnight. warmer and dry weather is exppected this weekend with offshore winds increasing on sunday and into monday.
