(grant) lets first start with the bear fire burning in santa cruz county. it has scorched 320 acres in the mountains near boulder creek. the fire is 30 percent containmened. firefighters say they have stopped the forward progress of the the fire. this evening... evacuation orders are still in effect for some areas...but some people were allowed to go home today. seven firefighters have been hurt...including one who broke a wrist after falling 50 feet into a ravine...and another who burned his hands. one looting arrest has been made. (vicki) there is a little rain in the forecast but nothing short of a deluge

(grant) we have the latest containment numbers from cal-fire. the atlas fire in napa and solano counties has burned over 51-thousand acres and is 85-percent contained. it has destroyed 442 homes and businesses.== the tubbs fire destroyed thousands of homes and dozens of businesses in santa rosa and has burned more than 36-thousand acres in sonoma and napa counties. it is 92-percent contained tonight.== the nuns fire is also in napa and sonoma counties. it has burned 54-thousand acres and is 82- percent contained. finally the pocket fire near geyserville has burned more than 16-thousand acres and is 73-percent contained. (vicki) we are taking a closer look tonight on those north bay fires and examing how it was they became so destructive so fast. (grant) some experts are saying the blazes acted like a hurricane, but instead of water it was fire swirling around causing wipespread

damage. kron four's terisa estacio is in coffey park with us tonight with this story for us tonight (estacio - live - coffey park - ) when the fire hit - here in coffey park - it was whipping around eratically officials call it a fire whirl. and that whirl was running horizonally - plowing through homes, and pushing over cars as if they were toys(estacio - pkg)as fire investigators examine how this fire started, we are learning - why it was so violent and viscious devouring everything in its path. scott mclean, calfire. we had 60 to 80 mph winds pushing from calistoga and it spread within hours.a veteran calfire fire fighter with several decades of wildfire experience scott mclean laid out the unique qualities of these deadly fires explaining a lot - had

to do with the wicked winds and dry conditions feeding the flames, creating something called a firewhirlmclean. it was like an eddy, unpredictable and dangerous. mclean said the winds also tossed around explosvive embers mclean. like a game of leap frong. in coffeey park - look at this. there are many cars flipped over resting on their roofs mclean says as firewhirls whipped through this neighborhood, it consumed homes in a matter of minutes and pushed over car cars that weighed thousands of pounds mclean. it moved on its side and just cut through.in some neighborhoods, like off of fountaingrove - residents reported seeing walls of flames and that homes were burning like a giant blow torch. mclean. you could not outrun it.. it was massive. online... and it shows wether a home or business has been damaged or destroyed in the wildfires that continue to burn in the area. (grant) take a look at the map. red indicates that a structure was destroyed. yellow indicates that it was been damaged. the map right now is on the glen ellen area in sonoma county. you can see how much red is on the map... but there is a lot of yellow showing some homes were spared by the fires... while their neighbors were not so lucky. sonoma county officials are reminding residents of the local assistance center available in santa rosa for those with damaged or those with damaged or destroyed property. (vicki) breaking news... rescue crews are searching for a missing man off ocean beach.. the san francisco fire department tweeted this picture.... firefighters say the victim was initially thought to be a surfer....but witnesses say he was fully clothed. emergency crews are asking people to avoid the area near the great highway and sloat boulevard. (grant) new at 5. we now know the name of the san francisco police officer who was critically injured in a hit-and-run yesterday. officer elia lewin- tankel...was working the bicycle beat when he was hit by a fleeing suspect's s-u-v around noon yesterday on turk street... between van ness avenue and franklin street. the 32-year-old officer underwent surgery..and is in intensive care. the suspect drove away from the areabut was eventually arrested by police near buena vista park. buena vista park.

car break-ins and burglaries are on the rise in san mateo and police are trying to get the word out about the areas hardest hit. take a look at this map. this is where officers say a majority of these car break-ins are happening in san mateo. there's the bridgepointe shopping center... marina plaza shopping center... and the fish market.police say the burglaries are happening in busy parking lots near restaurants in the daylight hours.officers are asking if you see some one hanging around the cars acting suspicious ... to alert them. (grant) new tonight at five... good news for dog owners in the bay area. the national park service is dropping a decade-long fight that would restrict dogs in the golden gate national recreational area. the

proposal would have cut about 90-percent of the areas where dog owners are currently allowed to walk their dogs off leash. but a lawsuit filed by dog owners uncovered flaws in the decision-making process and showed bias from park service officials. in light of that...the national park service now says it is inappropriate to move forward with the restrictions. been arrested following a sexual assault investigation involving a catholic school girl in an east bay city(grant) kron4 has learned one of the suspects is an athlete at a private catholic school. the other suspect attends a public school in the mt. diablo school district. (vicki) kron4's haaziq maydun has the story a pair of student-athletes have been arrested in connection to a sexual assault investigation involving a female student from carondelet catholic school in concord.the

mount diablo school district confirms that one of the students arrested is from one of their schools. a source tells kron4 the student attends ygnacio valley high school in concord.the other person arrested is a student here at de la salle high school. in fact a number of del la salle students told me that the teenager arrested and is a player on de la salle's football teamdo you think this incident will have an impact of the football program?the alleged sexual assault occurred off campus last month in an unincorporated part of town in walnut creek. that is according to the contra costa county sheriff's office. their detectives received a report about the alleged incident earlier this week. wednesday the teenage suspects from de la salle and ygnacio valley high school were taken into custody. one de la salle student told me that he feels disappointed and sad because he knows the football player and that the student-athlete had a bright future. that future is in jeopardy right now because the young man is facing a very serious criminal charge. in concord haaziq maydun kron4news (vicki) this is the second sexual

assault arrest in less than a year at de la salle high school. in december of last year... a 15-year-old boy was accused of sexually assaulting a girl who goes to neighboring carondelet high school. the alleged assault took place on the de la salle campus after a football game. the boy was not charged with any crime. (grant) federal forecasters say this winter may be colder and wetter in parts of the northern u-s, while staying warmer and drier in much of the south. that's according to a new

report by the national oceanic and atmospheric administration . the up and down weather... is due to the possibility of seeing a "la nina" weather pattern. (anchor) meteorologist lawrence karnow is here now with more on the winter outlook. lawrence karnow: the first rain of the season is now moving into the bay area. it's a welcomed sight especially with all of the recent fires. winds are a little gusty ahead of the front between 15 to 25 mph. you can see the rain on doppler radar. it will be spreading south throughout the night and everyone should get some rain. we can expect as much as a quarter of an inch of rain in the north bay with more over the mountains. the rain will tapper off further

(grant) a rain delay during a college football game on saturday still has people talking.(vicki) this photo was taken at kansas state and posted to snapchat. the caption reads -- "newest members of the k-state kool kids."(grant) the university says the k-k-k reference does ánotá represent who they are as a school. school officials say if a post targets individuals on campus or if a student breaks the student code of conduct... it will take action. for now.. k-state says it's still investigating. (vicki) a quiet street in san lorenzo became a crime scene this morning after a 46 year old construction worker was critically injured trying to stop a suspect from

stealing his truck.(grant) the alameda county sheriff's department is now looking for both the suspect and the stolen pick up which was used to run the victim over.(vicki) kron4's maureen kelly reports the victim, a father of two, is now on life support at a local hospital. a sheriff's deputy collects the glasses and shoes that were knocked off the victim in the violent early morning carjacking.it happened at 530 am this morning as the 46 year old construction worker was leaving his house for work on the 15-thousand block of via del sol.he had started his truck in the morning to go to work while he went back at the house, when he came out suspect jumped in his truck he tried to stop that suspect from stealing his truck during that encounter the suspected the suspect in our victims vehicle ran our victim overa woman who was on the way to drop of her child at daycare saw it happen and finds the heartlessness of the suspect hard to fathom. she didn't want to appear on camera.you just hit a person you're human being why would you just run

off. like there's an animal near my car and i freak out and i stop. like i can't imagine hitting someone and driving off like it's ok. it's kind of heartbreaking that society has gotten so bad that the guy drove off and had no worry about the guy on the floor.neighbors say the victim grew up in this home and recently moved back in with his parents and the youngest of his two children. they describe him as a hardworker who recently got a new job in construction. they say this is the worst thing to happen on this normally quiet street. maureen kelly kron4 news. (vicki) life at the jarvis estate in napa county is slowly but surely getting back to normal.(grant) much of the land there was burned up in the fires... but as kron four's philippe djegal reports... the winery and vineyards are mostly in tact. (philippe) the once sprawling hills surrounding the jarvis estate, left blackened after flames ripped through them. the property

boasts 13-hundred acres -- and the president of jarvis winery, will jarvis, says about 70-percent of it burned, including equipement stationed near the back entrance.will jarvis/president- "it experienced the worst damage because of the equipment that was staged outside that caught on fire. you can see how it damaged the shot-creek walls as well as the concrete ground." nats- the clean-up process has been taxing.... in all, will says the fire caused several millions of dollars worth of damage. but the winery rests in a 45-thousand square foot cave facility... which suffered a lot of smoke damage, but inside -- nothing burned. before the fire, will says just 30-percent of the vineyards were harvested. so, now crews are pulling grapes, washing some, and leaving some unwashed. then pressing and tasting the product for comparison.will jarvis/president- "we're hoping, um, that it wasn't influenced by the smoke that flew into the cave, but um, time will tell. and, we're hoping for the best." the fermentation room still looks good. power and cell phone service is still out in this area, where mandatory evacuations were lifted wendesday. but will jarvis, says the lights are on

thanks to generators. which is why you can see inside the barrel room, where the fermemented wine is taken for aging.will jarvis/president - "and, its usually filled with barrels, or at least partially filled with barrels, uh, but what we had to do in order to clean this room out, was move everything out of the room, so that, um, we could do a deep clean and now we've just started the process of moving barrels back into the room." although a barn was lost along with several expensive pieces of equipement...will jarvis/nats- "this actually looks like it may be salvagible here." the vineyards were mostly untouched... will believes they acted as a natural fire break, seeing as so much of the land was scorched. it'll be a while until things get back to normal here. the property is being used as a staging ground for p-g- and-e, and what was damaged will still have to be replaced. but will says the most important part of this land and operation survived.will jarvis/president- "and, uh, as you can see, the vineyards are looking good, they weren't burned down by the fire, so we're going to keep making wine." right now, the plan here at jarvis estate is for crews to continue harvesting on friday... and, then re- open the property to guests on monday. in napa county, philippe djegal, kron four news. county through sunday. the free trips are only for people whose trips begins or ends in the agency's bus facility on piner road...not far from coffey park. golden gate transit says its drivers and staff are working around the clock to provide service from satna rosa. it also said that many of their employees who live in the north bay have been impacted by the fires. (pam) some of the evacuation orders for the "bear fire" in santa cruz county ... have been lifted. the fire started late monday night in boulder creek. it has burned 320- acres and is now 30-percent contained. people living in las cumbres, and areas south of bear creek road, are now able to return home. there are still evacuation orders for the bear creek community. seven firefighters have been injured battling the fire.. .and it has burned four structures. one person has been arrested for looting. investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. six... the cost to repair the oroville dam will top five- hundred million dollars. that is nearly double the original estimate of 275- million. this is according to the department of water recources. officials say the project requires significantly more excavation and concrete than expected. the main spillway and emergency spillway suffered significant damage during storms last february, prompting fears of massive flooding. nearly 200- thousand people were evacuated. the project is on schedule to finish pouring concrete on the main spillway by november first. (pam) this winter could be colder and wetter in parts of the northern u-s ... while staying warmer and drier in much of the south... that is according to a new report from federal forecasters. the up and down weather is due to the possibility of seeing a "la nina" weather pattern. forecasters say, there is a 55-to 65-percent

(steve) meteorologist lawrence meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us now with the four zone forecast. lawrence karnow: the first rain of the season is now moving into the bay area. it's a welcomed sight especially with all of the recent fires. winds are a little gusty ahead of the front between 15 to 25 mph. you can see the rain on doppler radar. it will be spreading south throughout the night and everyone should get some rain. we can expect as much as a quarter of an inch of rain in the north bay with more over the mountains. the rain will tapper off further south but everyone should get some much needed drops. a high surf advisory is in effect with waves as high as 18 feet at the coast. also a winter weather advisory goes up tonight for the sierra with between 3" to 6" expected over 6,500 feet. winds could gust to nearly 65 mph across higher peaks. you can see the cold

percent of the land there. the president of jarvis winery says the fire caused several thousands of dollars worth of damage on the property. a barn was destroyed, and so were several pieces of equipement. but he says the vineyards were mostly untouched. and, the winery which is actually located in a cave, mostly suffered smoke damage... but none of the facilities inside it were severely damaged. electricity and cellphone service in the area are still out. but crews are using a few generators to power things up. the plan now is for crews to resume harvesting the vineyards tomorrow... and, hopefully re-open the winery for tastings on monday. in sports -- the raiders are taking on the chiefs at the coliseum ... we'll give you an update.. plus -- dub nation has been holding
