(grant) in santa cruz county..... cal-fire says the potential for new fires remains high... as crews try to get a hold on the 'bear fire'. it has burned more than 300 acres since monday night.... it is now 40- percent contained. evacuation orders remain in place for parts of boulder creek. the fire destroyed

four structures....and seven firefigthers were injured. cal fire says the rough terrain and heavy timber in the area is making it harder to reach full containment. the wet weather helped firefigthers overnight. is picking up a few remaining showers but those will soon end. on the satellite image you can see the big trough of low pressure along the west coast. it will make for a chilly night tonight as the air dries and as skies begin to clear. a huge ridge of high pressure will begin to build starting this weekend. that will send the jet stream well to the north and any chance of rain with it too. highs around the state will be mild in the central valley with 60s and low 70s, sunny 70s in los angeles and san diego, and the sierra will see highs in the 50s and 60s. around the bay tomorrow we should see mostl sunny skies and warmer temperatures. highs will be in the 60s and low 70s. much warmer weather will begin next week with the possibility of record breaking heat and some windy weather too.

(vici) an east bay high school temporarily put its curriculum on hold after two students were expelled for a racist display. it happened at moreau catholic high school in hayward. one student went through the alphabet and made a list of racist terms that started with each letter. then another student read some of those terms out loud in a classroom. today the school gave students a chance to express how they are feeling and share their own experiences on campus. the school also had its counselors and teachers available to meet with students throughout the day in addition to the morning discussions. (grant) the san francisco police officer who was ran over by a car remains in the intensive care unit....as we learn more about the man accused of hitting him.

50-year-old maurice johnson... faces multiple charges including attempted murder. officer elia lewin-tankel was working his bicycle beat when he was hit by a car on wednesday...after officers say the suspect realized police were tracking him. officer lewin tankel has undergone surgery and is at san francisco general hospital. maurice johnson made his first court appearance earlier today. he is being held without bail. (vicki) a man is dead after his car was stolen in san lorenzo....the thief is still on the loose tonight. 46-year-old james figueroa junior died this morning. the incident happened on thursday at around 5:30 in the morning....near the corner of via del sol and via paro. police say figeroa started his truck and went back inside his home. when he came out...figeroa found the man in

his car. police say figeroa tried to stop his truck from being stolen.... but was run over. police have not yet released a description of the killer or of the truck. the last two of eight prototypes for president trump's proposed border wall are taking shape in san diego. the prototypes form a tightly packed row of imposing concrete and metal panels...including one with sharp metal edges on top. companies have until thursday to finish the models. as crews worked...five people jumped a short fence in tijuana into the construction site and were immediately stopped by agents. officials say there have ben at least four other illegal crossing attempts at the site since work began late last month. the models cost the government up to 500-thousand- dollars each. (vicki) the senate has voted to pass a budget resolution for next year...a move that could ease the way for republicans to pass major tax cuts.(grant) catherine heenan is here with more on the 4-trillion dollar

(catherine) congressional republicans have cleared an early hurdle in their push to pass a major tax overhaul....something they're hoping to do by the end of the year. the vote sets the stage for what could be a wild ride of a tax debate over the next few months.now - the house and senate each have approved budgets - and there are some big differences. most notably - over how much a tax bill would be allowed to increase budget deficits over the next decade. at the white house briefing though -- the move was hailed as a 'milestone.' it was announced today, meantime, that the federal budget has reached 666-billion dollars... far higher than last year.

biagini/lilly's mother: "our home, my parent's home burned down and inside of it was all of lilly's equipment, including her prosthetic limbs and her wheel chair. right here is lilly's wheel chair. i will go ahead and zoom in for you">paula o'rourke/hanger clinic: "so we just made her a new set of legs and given them to her in september">however when these folks here at the hanger clinic in san francisco learned about what happened to lilly...paula o'rourke/hanger clinic: "we gave her, her legs for free. we gave her new legs. she was born with a complexed medical condition called arthrogryposis. it is a complication with the joints. they don't bend. they don't move properly">as a result lilly had her legs surgically removed. the hanger clinic replaced them and now has replaced again

of the orchard senior community were allowed back on property to see if their homes are still standing or not. (vicki) kron four's philippe djegal reports... unfortunately, dozens of homes were lost in the fire... but most survived. (philippe) it's been 10 days since michael costantini was evacuated from his home... and, when he left, the u-s army national guard wasn't posted outside of the orchard senior community like it is now. before entering the property, people who live here, allowed to return to their homes, were greeted by santa rosa police officers, checking identification, and prepared for the possiblity that their house may no longer be there.michael costantini/resident- "my homes in tact. i gotta new middle

" nats- michael costantini/resident- "the house survived, but all the house across the street did not." it's clear from the video michael filmed using his cellphone -- that the recovery for this neighborhood will be long and difficult. he says he knows eleven families who have lost everything. michael costantini/resident- "i gotta process it on a number of different levels, and the levels come and go and my ability to process comes and goes." the property manager says of the 233 units here... 66 are a total loss. six others red-tagged... eight others damaged... so, in all, 80 units affected. that's a lot of people and a lot of families.rhonda mckinnon/ameri can red cross- "that's very sad to see." rhonda mckinnon is one of several volunteers with the american red cross, that welcomed returning residents with buckets full of supplies to help them safely sift through damage and clean-up.rhonda mckinnon/american red cross- "some of them, you can tell that they're nervous and they seem confused. they're not exactly sure what they're

going to be seeing. so they're not actually packing for the, the actual going in and sifting through debris."nats- the santa rosa fire department stopped by to check on people... which meant a lot to michael costantini, who says the only reason his house is still standing is because of the crew from engine 31. he had a chance to thank them for saving what he's called home for the past year.michael costantini/neighbor- "in the end, i think we're going to have a better park, uh, then we had before. this is a great place to live and the thing that makes it great are the people." people who will need time to get their lives back on track. in santa rosa, philippe djegal, kron four news. tried to find some treasures among the ruins (estacio - live - coffey park neighborhood) it was a very painful day out here for so many residents of coffey park- i met up with the raygoza family. they have lived out here on kerry lane for the past 20 years. they showed up today hoping they could find something to salvage (estacio pkg) norma raygoza gently went through the debris of her much loved home she shared with her 3 children and husband. 32 55 this is my husbands watch, my jewelry. norma told me on the morning of the tubbs fire, she awoke coughing from the smoke. norma. my husband said it was far, but then i paniced and told kids, don't take anything we will be back, a police officer then on a loud speaker said evacuate. we are safe. but when they returned, fires were still burning and they could see, nothing was left - eduardo left his car. eduardo raygoza. it looks like a bomb went off. angelica. my room used to be over there. the raygoza's home was large a 2 story - but the intense flames leveled it completey, like so many others in the coffey park neighborhood. angelica. i liked by jordanched jeans collection. norma showed me some items like a mug from her wedding that is broken she was able to salvage as well as some other mementos. norma. this was above my bed.. so fragile, i hate to touch it. norma says she is still in a state of shock. norma. it is like i am still in a nightmare, in a blink of an eye, this all our work is gone. )estacio - really heartbreaking words comign up on kron four news at 6,

(vicki) new at five... ride hailing company-- lyft-- is getting a billion dollar boost. google parent company-- alphabet-- anncounced yesterday that its growth equity fund led to the one-billion dollar investment. it comes four years after the company's venture capital arm invested in uber. lyft remains a distant second to uber... both in terms of market share and valuation. the latest funding round values lyft at 11 billion, up from a 7-point-5 billion valuation in april. uber, by comparison, was last valued at 70 billion. (grant) a man from vacaville was arrested and accused of sexually assaulting a child. police have arrested 26-year-old jacob haynes. a witness called police saying haynes innapropriately touched a seven-year-old girl inside a business back in september. police say the girl was with

her mother. police say haynes was an employee of the business when the incident happened. he was later arrested in his home. police have not received any other reports of haynes victimizing children. (vicki) san bruno police arrested two women in connection with a prostitution ring wednesday. it happened around six pm at an apartment on commodore drive near el camino real. xifeng (she-fung) yu and shu no zhang (jong) were arrested during an undercover investigation of the suspected brothel. police were already investingating the location following various complaints. the two women were arrested on suspicion of engaging in acts of prostitution. they were cited and later released. (grant) a 74-year-old man in utah is on a mission to save his wife's life--and he's spreading his message by wearing a sign. one eight-year-old girl in denver decided to turn her own frightening experience into something positive. community in santa rosa ... was also severely affected by fire. . today, residents there were allowed back on the property to check the status of their homes. and, if their homes were still up, they were allowed to stay. the property manager says of the 233 units on the property... 66 mobile homes were destroyed. six others had to be red- tagged... and, eight others suffered some form of damage. in all, 80 homes were affected. one man, who says his home survived, believes the rebuilding process will be difficult... but says .. his neighbors will make it through this. michael costantini/neighbor- "be strong. this is going to take a long time for all of us to process. this is going to take a long time, but in the end, i think we're going to have a better park, uh, then we had before. this is a great place to live, and the thing that makes it great are the people." santa rosa police officers and members of the

happening right now: oakland police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that sent a child to the hospital. the collision happened just before 1-30 this afternoon on 15th street near 8th avenue. there was a second crash reported at about the same time on foothill boulevard. police quickly tracked down the driver and arrested her. few details are available about the victim... but the child is in the hospital with major injuries and listed in critical condition at this hour. investigators say speed was a factor in the collision. (pam) in the east bay... darin white is now the permanent chief of the oakland fire department. white was sworn in by mayor libby schaaf today. he has served as interim fire chief for the last nine months. white assumed the position, after former fire chief teresa deloach- reed retired. deloach -reed came under pressure after the ghost ship warehouse fire last december which killed 36 people.
