was targeted shootings whether they were random shootings or whether it was a combination of bothin lake county camila bernal kron 4 news (grant) a big story will are following... opening statements began this morning in the the kate steinle murder case. back in 2015... jose garcia zarate was arrested for shooting steinle as she walked on san francisco's pier 14. the public defender handling the case says the shooting was accidental. this case has touched off a nationwide controversy over sanctuary city policies. zarate -- an undocumented immigrant -- had been arrested and deported numerous times before the shooting. another twist to the case... the gun used in the killing was stolen from a car belonging to a federal bureau of land management ranger. (vicki) kron 4's lydia patnazes explains what happened as the driver was picking up passengers from s-f-o. a driver for a ride-hailing service was shot as he drove two passengers from san francisco international airport near san bruno, officials said. the driver was expected to survive after being treated for a gunshot wound to the neck late sunday, california highway patrol officials said. the shooting happened around 11:10 p.m., when someone opened fire

(grant) two bicyclists are recovering after being hit by a car in danville. police are still looking for the car and the driver. it happened on eastbound diablo road and clydesdale drive. officers say the driver hit the two people then drove off. both vicitms are in the hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. police believe the car is a silver ford escape or a similar style s-u-v (vicki) an update now on

the major fires burning in the north bay. this morning firefighters reached 90- percent containment. cal fire expects the fires to be fully contained by friday. the firestorms have burned over 110-thousand acres and destroyed more than 65-hundred structures. all state parks in the fire area remain closed. (grant) and take a look at this new video from our drone...quadcopter four. this was recorded today in the fountaingrove neighborhood of santa rosa. when the fires started-- a handful of homeowners stayed behind to fight the flames while their families evacuated. in the video you can see the devastation as homes are now turned into ash. people are returning to their neighborhoods after the firestorm either destroyed or damaged their homes. a larkfield neighborhood that was destoryed by the tubbs fire has re-opened to

(grant) one family returned to the neighborhood yesterday for the first time since they were forced out. they lost their home but their safe... which was filled with thousands of dollars... was still intact. the neighborhood reopened at 8 this morning. a curfew is in place.. starting at 5:30 in the evening. (vicki) there is new a resource tonight for north bay fire victims. until recently sonoma county and the city of santa rosa had their own websites for information. they have now combined their effort in one place...sonoma county recovers dot org. it features links and guides for those who may have lost their homes or sustained some sort of damage during the wildfires. you can find a link to the website at kron 4 dot com. (vicki) the american red cross is opening a client service center in santa rosa for people affected by the wildfires. the center will give families the chance to meet individually with trained red cross case workers to assess their disaster-related

(grant) firefighters are getting a hold on the bear fire in the santa cruz mountains. this morning all evacuation orders were lifted. the wildfire is now 79- percent contained. the flames have burned nearly 400 - acres. the fire has destroyed four buildings. nine firefighters have been injured. (grant) officials are warning people to be aware of scams as they begin to rebuild. the department of homeland security is cautioning people about fake offers of state or federal money. they are also urging people to be careful when giving out sensitive information to people who might be áposingá as fema

san ramon police are looking for a man who tried to lure a middle school girl into his car and exposed himself. police have just released two different sketches of the man they believe is responsible. police say two middle school students were walking on bollinger canyon road near blossom ridge lane when the man told a girl to come to his car. as she got closer to the car she saw that the man was exposing

himself and he tried to grab her shirt. she ran away. the man is described as having a scar on his right cheek. he was in a dark gray 4-door sedan... possibly with a nevada license plate. (vicki) new at five... santa clara fire crews rescue a baby locked inside a gun safe. they say the baby's sibling accidentally locked him inside. the fire department tweeted a picture of the scene. fire officials say the baby was a little shaken up... but he will be okay. (grant) police arrest a man for for setting off a bathroom sprinkler and injuring an officer. it happened early sunday morning at the warm springs bart station in fremont. the 53-year old man resisted arrest. the officer that was hurt will be okay. the man was taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation (grant) three people are behind bars in connection with a deadly shooting in fremont. it happened saturday night at the extended stay america hotel on farwell drive. officers found a man just

outside the hotel lobby suffering from a gunshot wound. he died from his injuries. investigators believe the victim and the shooter may have known each other. this is fremont's first homicide since 20-15. (vicki) police tow four cars... after a sideshow in san jose. it happened early sunday morning. dozens of cars were involved. police say racers blocked both lanes on old bayshore highway and were doing donuts. they even broke a window of a police car trying to drive through the area. racers were eventually arrested no officers were injured (grant) president trump... trying to calm the fears of americans with a 401-k retirement savings plan. the commander in chief wrote the following on twitter this morning, quote ... (vicki) nearly two years after kate steinle was fatally shot on san francisco's pier 14, the man accused in her murder goes on trial.(grant) it was a case that ignited an national debate about illegal immigration because the suspect is an undocumented immigrant who has been deported five times.(vicki) kron4's maureen kelly was in the courtroom for opening arguments. the hall of justice was jam packed with journalists despite the fact that no cameras were allowed in court. that's because the killing of 32 year old kate steinle became part of the 2016 presidential campaign..used as an example by now president donald trump as why sancutary cities like san francisco are

bad policy. a few months before the shooting jose garcia zarate first identified by his alias.. francisco lopez sanchez.. had been released from custody from san francisco jail without anyone alerting the feds.but his immigration status was not mentioned by assistant district attorney diana garcia who started off her opening statements by showing the jury the murder weapon used in the killing of stienle.the ada said that garcia zarate pointed the gun at kate steinle's direction and pulled the trigger.altho ugth she admitted there was no eyewitness who saw him shoot steinle and there is no evidence that he was the one who stole the gun from a car belonging to a federal park ranger. she says witnesses who saw him hurrying away from the scene after the shotbehavior so different as others rushed in to help that they took pictures of him.she said that the guna sig sauer p239 had recently been inspected and not the kind of gun that goes off by accident. the defense attorney, in his opening statements told the jury that this gun is used as a backup weapon because it's meant to use by law enforcement who might be in emergency situations.the distict attorney said that this gun does not discharge without pulling the trigger and she has to be aware the sf officers have discharged

(vicki) for your health tonight... doctors say many expectant mothers are missing an important step to keep their newborns healthy. (grant) it's the t-dap vaccine... which protects against the whooping cough. nina cruscuolo with our partners in indiana explains

why moms should pay extra attention to new research. whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease. for adults it's just an annoying cough that may hang around for a long time... but for infants it can be much more serious, even sometimes causing death. the centers for disease control suggests all pregnant women get the t-dap vaccine during their third trimester... it allows the vaccine to take effect before the baby is born. new research shows 78-percent of cases are prevented in mothers who get that injection.... and 90-percent effective in preventing serious cases. however, just less than half of pregnant women are getting the t-dap vaccine... dr. emily scott with iu health says many people think whooping cough is a thing of the past... cases nationally have declined from about 200-

thousand cases annually in the 1940's to just about 11- thousand reported so far this year... but in some areas of the country, including indiana... doctors say complacency is leading to a reversal in that trend. dr. scott says there are no risks associated with the t-dap vaccine. babies start receiving the shot at two months, but are completely unprotected before that. and while the cdc says it is most important for mothers to receive the vaccine while pregnant, other family members should as well... including dads and grandparents... really anyone that will be spending time with the baby in those first two months of life.
