back to our breaking news tonight... a gunman kills four people and injures a number of others, including elementary school students. (vicki) it happened this morning at multiple locations in tehama county just outside of chico. deputies received a report of shots fired at around 8 a.m. at rancho tehama elementary school. (grant) at least 10 people were injured, including at least two

children. the gunman shot a person, stole a pickup truck and went on a shooting rampage. after crashing the truck, the suspect hijacked a second vehicle and kept shooting people at random...into other cars...into houses. the shooter was eventually shot and killed by police. the victims say some of the blame goes to the gunmaker's aggressive marketing. "now remington may never have known adam lanza, but they had been courting him for years." blamblamblamsemiautomatic weapons like the bushmaster ar- 15 allow a shooter to fire dozens of rounds in a minute,, the court asked the company attorney why. "what is a 30 round magazine used for?" "well if you were at a, if you were target shooting, and you're looking at a target 100, 200 yards down range, you want to be able to fire your gun repeatedly without having to reload it. it's a simply, it's convenience ."the lawsuit says ads like these ... saying "forces of opposition, bow down" ... had a seductive appeal to lanza's gun obsession. "i mean, if, if, if it's used for hunting, or for target practice, what's the purpose of that type of advertising?" "well it, it's also used, as the courts have recognized, for home defense purposes, that if i was in a home defense situation and i feel, felt the need to have a firearm to defend myself or my
5:33 pm
family, i would certainly want to choose a firearm that would force whatever opposition i'm presented with to bow down." the lawsuit alleges that remington bushmaster negligently sold a product capable of doing great harm. what we have here is the conduct of a corporation that thought it was above the law and still thinks it's above the law."the company attorney said sandy hook was a tragedy ... but the gunmaker's actions were not illegal, under federal law, under connecticut law, and under the law in every other jurisdiction the manufacturer and the sellers of the firearm used by the criminal that day are not legally responsible for his crimes and the harm that he caused." (catherine) the suit was dismissed by a lower court, which agreed that weapons makers are immune to such lawsuits. the higher court ruling isn't expected for several months. grant and vicki? supporters say they are worried about a mass shooting happening in their city. but opponents say it's unfair to ban a legitimate business. kron 4's lydia pantazes has the story. this is the store here behind me,you can see the sign that says they'll open this month and that they're hiring.but if they do, they won't be selling guns or ammunition.that's because the city council in san carlos voted 4 to 1 in favor of the moratorium, which lasts for 45 days but can be extended for up to two years. turner's outdoorsmen is a chain of sporting goods shops that already has about 20 other locations.community members who are against the store opening pointed to a list of cases in which guns were stolen from turner's outdoorsman stores across california, two of which were used in the san bernardino attack.we spoke with people on both sides of the issue last night.

land so we're on our own to pay for itdamage was so bad, the family dug up the entire front yard.some of our neighbors were able to flip the grass and fix their lawn but ours was done so badly that some of the holes were a foot and a half to 2 feet deep there's never a good time for pigs to come destroy your land but of course, with the holidays and my son's birthday, and family obligations, i wasn't planning on spending several thousand dollars to redo our property walking down westside court, you can see the havoc in chris chalmer's yard. he tried fixing it the first night they attacked, but eventually gave up. chris chalmers - came home, put it all together, the next night they came again and a 3rd night they came again. so after the third night we basically gave up.he now has to figure out what to do next. we paid our gardener to remove the torn up stuff for now, just to make it kinda look a little bit better, but as you can see there's still a lot of damage, we're probably just gonna tear it all out and go for a more natural water resistant landscape. many neighbors here are also rethinking the idea of having grass in their yards. reporting from san ramonali reid kron 4 news.
