(robin) we have an update this morning on a mail bomb that was sent to the home of a police officer in the east bay. it happened friday on bay farms island in alameda. now we are learning -- this is not the only recent incident of someone being sent an exploding package. kron4's j-r stone has the details. sot a parcel was delivered by mail and it did detonatea description of what happened

when a mail bomb was sent to this police officers house in alameda. a bomb that injured someone when it went off. that case happened this past friday.sot it's very rarebut while a mail bomb may be rare, friday's case in alameda is the second exploding package in the bay area in six weeks. on october 19th a package was sent to a home in east palo alto. it exploded and injured someone in the process.sot it is a serious federal offense with stiff penalitiesno arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions given. some neighbors living in this area are a bit shaken by the ordeal. memories of unabomber and domestic terrorist ted kaczynski may be long past but involved at least four mail bombs in northern california.at least two in the bay area more than 20 years ago. no group or suspect has been linked to this most recent case but officials tell us they are working to try and figure out who is to blame.sot we have a task force of detectives and investigators working on this at this time. morning.we are learning just how deadly a holiday weekend it was on bay area roads. between wednesday to sunday ... c-h-p says there were 9 deadly crashes were a totalof twelve people lost their lives. of those who died -- six were ánotá wearing seatbelts. the c-h-p arrested 186- people for driving under the influence. ( darya )we now know the name of the ten year old girl who died in a crash in interstate 80 in emeryville. we first told you about the deadly crash yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. 10-year-old crystal vasquez from san francisco died on sunday when the car she was in ... smashed into a pickup truck that had spun out of control and hit the center divide. crystal's younger sister suffered broken bones in the crash but is expected to recover. crystal's friends

at bryant elementary school in san francisco are now raising money for her funeral. the school has also brought in grief counselors for the students. (robin) the crash that claimed the most lives was saturday night in san pablo. four people died on interstate 80 ... including a 13 year old and a 14 year old. jared horn, who plays baseball at cal, was driving and was the only one in the car who survived. his dad, daryl, and 14 year old brother, joe, died ... as did the horns relatives who were in town for thanksgiving ... visiting from washington state. those relatives ... 13- year old baden biddle ... and his dad, troy biddle. the family was returning from a basketball game when they were hit.officers have arrested a sacramento man who's accused of d-u-i hit and run. fred lowe is facing several charges ... and authorities say he was driving on a suspended liscense and had a prior dui. (robin) a pastor at saint michael parish in livermore... has been put on

leave after an allegation of inapropriate behavior. the diocese of oakland says, the pastor involved, is father van dinh .... and the allegation does ánotá involve a child. the pastor will remain on leave while the police investigate .... no word on what led to the allegation of inapropriate behavior. (robin)(boxes)in san francisco ...dozens of people have been let back into their homes after a gas leak and explosion. it happened yesterday near mission street and insterstate 2-80 ... in the bernal hieghts neighborhood. kron4's gabe slate is tracking developments from the scene. sot- i smelled gas around 10am on the 3900 hundred block of mission street near the glen park neighborhood there was a strong smell of gas. people who live here called 911 and pg&e who both sent out crews chief hale sffd - division 3the fire department thinks the explosion came from the garage on the lower level

of this three story home. it blew out the windows of the house and the garage door was blown off. 8 people lived here they were renters officials on the scene have not disclosed details about the damage to the home but that the renters will not be able to move back in anytime soon. the red cross is helping them out. thankfully no one was home at the time.. there were no injuries juan lives near by he told me what about a dozen people out here said to me about this explosion.. that it sounded more like a car accident sot juan - neighborit took pg&e between 2 and three hours to shut off the main valve that was feeding the gas leak. this concerned nearby residence who were potentially breathing that gas for hours.. also people here were worried that leak could have turned into a fire with the wrong spark. pg&e said told me that during this 3 hours they were digging up holes in the street to turn off the main valve that was

flowing to the gas leak people in the area were in no danger. here is their explanation for why it took so long sot - andrea menniti / pg&e spokespersonno one in the area lost their electricity but over 450 homes around here have been without gas for most of the day. sots - people no gas happening today.jurrors will resume deliberations in the kate steinle murder case. so far, the jury has had the case for only two days ... because of the holiday weekend. they have weeks

of testimony to go over, including witnesses and evidence from the prosecution ... which maintains the killing was intentional. the defense says, it was an accident... jose garcia zarate could be sentenced to up to 25- years to life, if found guilty of first degree murder. the jury also has the option of second degree murder, as well as involunatary manslaughter. garcia zarate could also be found not guilty or there could be a hung jury. (robin)happening now. san jose police are on the hunt for the man who shot and killed another man over the weekend. it happened around early sunday morning ... on ringwood avenue near concourse drive. police responded to a report of a person being shot behind a building. when officers arrived ... they found a man suffering from at least one gun shot wound. authorities say the man was taken to the hospital where he was prounounced dead. police have yet to determine a motive. the identity of the man killed has not been released. (robin) police looking for the man who robbed two women at tunitas creek beach in san mateo county. this

terrified of the high risk delivery to come. kron4's spencer blake has more. chad and amy kempel are expecting, and their oldest daughter savannah knows how many babies are in mommy's tummy."five!"aside from savannah, and one-year-old avery, they also had two sons -- twins born in 2013.but marshal and spencer were born about 17 weeks early, and only lived for a few hours.having already experienced that tragedy, they want to make sure they have a doctor and a facility that's ready to handle five babies at once."we like our current doctor; he cared for me while i was pregnant with our two daughters and i have nothing bad to say - everything turned out great, good experience. for me it just comes down to experience."but they say their current hospital doesn't have that experience, and so they're hoping to see doctor john elliott in arizona, who has successfully delivered 23 set of quintuplets.but obviously, he's out of network for the kempels."we asked for the referral, and they said, 'no, we can handle this, don't

worry, we can take care of it." in fact, in a statement sent to kron four, senior vice president of kaiser permanente walnut creek colleen mckeown says she's confident the hospital has quote "the necessary experience and resources to provide high quality prenatal, delivery, and post-partum care - including preterm labor prevention - in the event of multiple births."but chad and amy still want to count on doctor elliott, who uses methods to slow or stop early labor for multiple births - something they said their previous doctor ádidn't do to try and save their twins.amy says it's scary going down a road nobody else has at her hospital."they just have no stats to back up anything, so that's my fear is - i mean if we're a success, then great, and i'll be ecstatic."they still want that referral, if possible, and might go to arizona even without itif a go-fund-met account set up for them by family members really takes off. (reporter)kaiser permanente also says it haw specialized teams to handle multiple births, and points out that there are also five kaiser hospitals in northern california with a level three nicu, which all of the kempels babies are likely to need for a month or more.amy will probably be put on bed rest within the next two or three weeks.in san joaquin county, spencer blake, kron four news.

(robin @ landing)in another big story ...we are hearing from the man who faced off with a great white shark... and lived to tell about it. he was attacked and bitten on friday near pebble beach ...and he shared his story from a hospital bed with kron4's haaziq madyun. nats/opening bandagesot 25-year-old grigor azatian is showing me one of the bite wounds he suffered after being attacked by a great white shark last friday while spear fishing in monterey. he says he feels lucky to have survived the encountersot he describes the moments just before the attacksot

(robin) there have been nine major shark attacks along the california coast since march of this year.many of the victims were kayaking or fishing. three in monterey county counting this last one. there were also attacks in san mateo, santa cruz, santa barbara, los angeles, orange and humboldt counties. back in may in san clemente, which is orange county... officials had to close beaches there ... after more than two dozen sharks were spotted. (robin) in the east bay... sideshows are becoming a growing problem... the most recent happening in emeryville. we brought you this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news ... now the mayor of that city says they are taking steps to prevent future sideshows. early sunday morning... more than 100 cars and some 500 people were spotted gathering a parking lot in emeryville. police quickly moved in and cleared the lot. and emeryville's mayor says he's determined to keep it that way.

(robin) east bay police say they've arrested a pair accused of being serial car thiefs.spolice in dublin say a neighbor spotted miguel rios and julio reyes casing cars ... and called police. when police arrived they say the suspects were getting into a stolen car from concord. they ran from officers ... but were both caught. later ... police found both suspects had stolen property.they say the suspects are responsible for at least ten car burglaries in dublin on saturday. (robin) happening now in south bay.parents and students in the oak grove school district are facing the very real possibility that several elementary schools could be closed down. as kron4's charles clifford reports ....the district is facing a budget deficit of millions of dollars. monday evening, the oak grove school district consolidation committee met to identify 3-5 elementary elementary schools in the district that could be closed down. nearby, parents and students rooted for the survival of their particular schools.sotit's really heartbreaking that they are looking at our school to close eva marcoida has a child at miner elementary. she says closing it down would be a devastating blow to parentssot our parents don't necessarily have the means to have a car to take their kids to a school that's half a mile away. it's heartbreaking so we are here to voice for them.kristine lopper has a child at indigo.

she says waiting to find out the fate of her child's school has been frustrating.sotits really hard to not have the transparency of where wew are headed.the district, which serves many low income families, is dealing with a budget crunch. enrollment is dropping and the district is facing a budget deficit in the millions of dollars. in effort to balance the books, the district has already approved a plan to layoff staff, offer early retirement to others, reduce services and make a 5% across the board cut. but that won't be enough so the district is now looking at consolidating at least 3 schools.all of the parents i spoke to monday evening acknowledge that there are no good options here. no one wants to close down a school and waiting for a final decision from the district is taking an emotional toll.sot it's heartbreaking for anyone.

(robin) also happening now:police in santa rosa are looking for a man who stole a camera.. then hit an store employee with his car during the getaway. take a look. we have a photo of the suspect -- and the car he was driving. this happened friday evening at the shutterbug camera shop.the man entered the store - asked to see the most expensive camera. -- then took off. according to police - the suspect could be as young 16 years old.the person who was hit by the car - was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay. (robin) we are learning more about a man accused of flying a drone over levi's stadium and the oakland

coliseum over the weekend. he has been identified as michael mapes from sacramento. police say he flew the drone over the 49ers game. he was trying to use the drone to drop anti-media leaflets. police say he then tried to do the same over the oakland coliseum. federal laws prohibit drone flights near n-f-l games. mapes was sited by police and released. (robin) a sunnyvale man already arrested on suspicion of stalking a co-worker... got into more trouble. yesterday ... police went inside christopher oicles home ... and found guns and a meth lab. last wednesday -- the 49-year- old man was arrested over a matter with his co-worker. police say the suspect admitted he was becoming more aggressive and wanted to be with her. (robin)moving on to news about the raiders.wide receiver michael crabtree is going to have to sit out two games. (robin@landing) we've told you about many of the heroic actions taken by people when the north bay firestorm broke out.yesterday doctors, nurses and hospital staff of sutter health in santa rosa were honored. kron 4's camila bernal has more. it was 2am on october 9th when dr. scott witt was woken up by a call from the nurse manager at the newborn intensive care unit28:43 saying that the sheriff had notified them that they might have to prepare for evacuationas the director of the nicu, he got dressed and

jumped in his truck, heading to sutter hospital29:33 i knew i couldn't get anywhere in my truck so i went back to my house to get my motorcycle because you can get around traffic easier on ithis family was also being evacuated-they drove south and he went to the hospital, where the flames were very visible.31:01 that's when i recognized wow this is really significant we might actually have to move and get babies out of herethey began by moving the babies to an area of the hospital that had less flames and less smoke but soon they realized they needed to evacuate-something that was not going to be easy.32:26 you can't just put them in a taxi and take them somewhere they have to have an incubator that we can put on an ambulance and move themthey waited for ambulances to transport 8 babies-but the job didn't end there. the doctor wanted to follow his patients. he again, jumped on his motorcycle.34:20 the roads that we were taking had embers and burning stuff falling on to the freeway and down power lines so it was a lot more perilous than it was when i first started outthe babies were all kept safe and the doctor will never forget it 36:19 i'm thankful for my bike i always have been but i'm more thankful for the people around me and the people in my

(robin)in national news ... president trump has named a new leader for the consumer financial protection bureau.as john lorince reports ... the appointment is shaking up watchdog agency. white house budget director mick mulvaney was named acting director of the c-f-p-b by president trump.on day 1, he announced a month-long freeze on hiring and new rules.mick mulvaney/white house budget director"anything that's in the pipeline stops for at least 30-days while i get a chance to see exactly what's going on and kick the tires here at the bureau."but some say mulvaney's appointment is the beginning of the end -- and not just because there is another acting director disputing the way mulvaney was appointed.jeffrey toobin/cnn legal analyst"this bureau is basically going to die. this idea, it was elizabeth warren's idea, to have a consumer bureau is basically going to be killed by this administration."mulvaney refutes that, saying the agency will stay open, albeit with a few changes.mick

be worse off by the bill ... while the wealthy would get big benefits.the non-partisan report also predicts the bill would increase the deficit by 1.4 trillion dollars over ten years. a handful of g-o-p senators remain undecided. that has republican leaders scrambling to shore up the votes.lawmakers also have a lengthy 'to do' list before the end of the year. including passing a spending bill to avert a governement shutdown. (robin) congress is pressing uber for answers in regards to the data breach that affected 57-million riders in 2016.the ride- hailing company kept it a secret for a year. the massive hack took users' personal information and license numbers of 600- thousand drivers. the investgation is led by five senators... they want to know when uber learned about the breach... and wether social security numbers were taken. the san francisco based company says they paid hackers 100-thousand to destroy the data... and that there's no evidence, the information was misused. california are fighting to repeal a recent gas tax and vehicle registration fee increase.it was signed into law by governor jerry brown in april.supporters say funds generated from the increases will help improve public infrastructure.but repeal efforts are still being pursued... now local leaders in san diego are joining citizens to rally for the cause. (robin)584-thousand signatures are needed by march to put the issue on the november 2018 ballot for a vote. (robin) police killed a man who barricaded himself in a car after taking his seven month old daughter hostage. the fatal encounter happened in the los angeles suburb of covina... and was captured on video.

family of the suspect watching this unfold. it started when an officer noticed the white car blocking a park entrance. police say, that officer saw a man arguing with his girlfriend... and threatening her with a knife. the woman took the keys and got out. all while the seven- month old baby was inside the car. after seven hours of negotiation -- swat used a flash bang device, and got the suspect out of the car. they were able to get the baby safely away from the car before the suspect was shot. (robin)in the north bay. two people are under arrest in fairfield after an early morning shooting. it happened sunday morning on the 22-hundred block of peach tree drive. witnesses reported hearing several gunshots. when police got to the scene they could not find any victims. after talking to witnesses officers arrested two men for firing a gun near homes. both men had previous criminal records. fairfield... a fire causes damage to a sports center at alan witt park. the fire started in the men's locker room and investigators say it appears to be accidental. most of the damage was confined to the men's sauna and locker room. the sports center will remain closed through january so it can be repaired. (robin@landing )before we end this hour ... artifacts from the legendary 19-24 "ten commandments" film have been un-earthed.they were found in the guadalupe-nipomo dunes ... near santa barbara. archaeologists discovered the sphinx head and parts of her body that have stayed remarkably preserved 94 years in the sand ... after the "ten commandments" movie premiered. the hunt for the lost former movie set began in the 80's and is a costly endeavor.

(robin)experts believe the director buried the movie set because it was too expensive to move and he didn't want other filmmakers to have it. the new spinx should be unveiled next summer. ( james ) in the east bay... we have an update on a mail bomb that was sent to a police officer's home. we're learning this is ánot the only incident authorities are investigating. the latest case happened friday on bay farms island in alameda. one person was injured when the bomb went off. back on october 19th... a bomb was sent to a home in east palo alto. it exploded and injured one person. so far... no arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions given. ( james ) mixed emotions for an east bay couple expecting quintuplets. they are excited to welcome five new babies... but they're also terrified of the high risk delivery to come. chad and amy kempel have two children. back in 2013... amy kempel gave birth to twins... but they were born 17

weeks early and only lived for a few hours. now.. they're hoping to see a doctor in arizona... who has successfully delivered 23 sets of quintuplets. but kaiser permanente walnut creek isn't giving the couple the referral they need. ( james ) kaiser says it's confident it has the resources needed to successfully deliver the babies. but the kempels still want to go to arizona. they've set up a go-fund-me account to help cover the costs. ( darya ) another big story we are following this morning... we now know the name of the ten year old girl who died in a crash in interstate 80 in emeryville. we first told you about the deadly crash yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. 10-year-old crystal vasquez from san francisco died on sunday when the car she was in smashed into a pickup truck

that had spun out of control and hit the center divide. crystal's younger sister suffered broken bones in the crash but is expected to recover. crystal's friends at bryant elementary school in san francisco are now raising money for her funeral. the school has also brought in grief counselors for the students. ( darya ) we have also learned the names of 4 people killed in a hit-and-run crash in san pablo over the weekend. that crash also happened on interstate 80 and the victims included a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old. jared horn, who plays baseball at cal, was driving and was the only one in the car who survived. his dad, daryl, and 14 year old brother, joe, died...as did the horns relatives who were in town for thanksgiving...visiting from washington state. those relatives...13-year old baden biddle...and his dad, troy biddle. the family was returning from a basketball game when they were hit. officers have arrested a

sacramento man who's accused of d-u-i hit and run. ( darya ) those are just some of the people killed over the holiday weekend. overall the c-h-p says 12 people were killed onbay area highways between wednesday and sunday. of those who died -- six were ánotá wearing seatbelts. also - the c- h-p arrested 186- people for driving under the influence. ( james ) happening now... a pastor at saint michael parish in livermore is being investigated for inappropriate behavior. the church has not released many details but the diocese of oakland says father van dinh has been placed on leave since the allegations surfaced. the police are investigating and say the accusations do ánotá involve a child. no other information on the allegations have been released. have been allowed back home after a gas leak and explosion in san francisco. it happened near mission street and interstate 2-80.... in the bernal heights neighborhood. the fire department believes that the explosion came from the garage on the lower level of a three story house. it blew out the windows of the house and the garage door was blown off. 8 people lived in the home but nobody was home at the time. p-g-and-e was able to shut off the gas leak and they say the area is safe. they are still trying to figure out the source of the leak. ( darya ) happening today... the jury will continue deliberations in the trial for the man accused of killing kate steinle. the jury has weeks of testimony to go over... as well as witness testimony and evidence from the prosecution... who argues the killing was intentional. the defense says it was an accident... jose garcia zarate could be sentenced to up to 25- years to life, if found guilty of

( james ) there have been nine major shark attacks along the california coast since march of this year.... many of the victims were kayaking or fishing. three were in monterey county including this last one... there were also attacks in san mateo, santa cruz, santa barbara, los angeles, orange and humboldt counties. back in may in parts of orange county... officials had to close beaches there after more than two dozen sharks were spotted.

( darya ) another big story we are following... a man is recovering after being stabbed in san francisco's bayview district. it happened on thanksgiving day at around two a-m on gilman avenue near hawes street. police say the 50-year-old victim got into a fight with the 26-year-old man. the man stabbed the victim in the chest and took off. the victim is still in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries. the attacker was later tracked down and arrested. ( darya ) new at 5 this morning... we are hearing from one of the youngest victims of the deadly shooting rampage in tehama county earlier this month. now the 6-year-old boy says he does not want to go back to the school where the gunman opened fire. alejandro hernandez was shot twice... one bullet hit his foot... the other hit his

right lung. that bullet is still lodged in his chest. doctors say it is remarkable that he was able to return home just two weeks after the shooting. rancho tehama elementary school reopened yesterday but alejandro says he is not going back. ( james ) in the south bay... parents and students in the oak grove school district are concerned that several elementary could soon be closed. the district says it is facing a budget deficit of millions of dollars .... and may have no choice but to consolidate schools. district officials met last night to try and figure out may need to be closed down. the district says it has already approved a plan to layoff staff and offer early retirement in an effort to balance the budget. parents we spoke with say nobody wants their child's school to close down.

( james ) a man was seriously injured when two groups began fighting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. the fight broke out around early sunday morning on eddy street near larkin street. police say people were armed with a variety of weapons... including baseball bats and machetes. during the fight... a man was shot. he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

the shooter was last seen running down eddy street... police have not released a description of the shooter. ( james ) in the east bay... police say they've arrested two men accused of being serial car thiefs. dublin investigators say a neighbor called police after spotting miguel rios and julio reyes casing cars. when police arrived they say the suspects were getting into a stolen car from concord.... they ran from officers... but were both eventually caught. they were found with stolen property. police say the men are responsible for at least ten car burglaries in dublin on over the weekend. ( darya ) two people are under arrest in fairfield after an early morning shooting. it happened sunday morning on the 22-hundred block of peach tree drive. witnesses reported hearing several gunshots. when police got to the scene they could not find any victims. after talking to witnesses officers arrested two men for firing a gun near homes. both men had previous criminal records.

police in concord have arrested a man accused of robbing a bank yesterday afternoon. police just releasing this picture of the suspect. the robbery happened at the bank of america on willow pass road in concord. police say the man went into the bank and demanded money and then took off with the cash. police found the man identified as robert waterman a few blocks away. witnesses identified him as the thief and he was taken to jail. ( darya ) the man who escaped a psychiatric facility in hawaii and flew to san jose is now fighting his extradition back to hawaii. randall saito was in court yesterday in stockton... where he was arrested. he requested to have a hearing scheduled to contest extradition. saito was caught on camera leaving the hospital in hawaii a few weeks ago. he then boarded a

plane to san jose. he was committed to the psychiatric hospital after being acquitted of murdering a woman in 19-79 by reason of insanity. saito now faces escape charges. ( james ) happening now... there is a new effort to repeal california's new gas tax. organizers in southern california are working to get the repeal on the ballot in november of next year. the tax was signed into law by governor jerry brown in april. supporters say funds generated from the increases will help improve public infrastructure. more than 500-thousand signatures are needed by march in order to get the issue on the ballot next ( james ) the u-s senate is slated to vote on the republican tax bill this week ... but the votes to pass may not be there. all this, as the congressional budget office releases new analysis showing .... many low and middle income americans would be worse off by the bill ... while the wealthy would get big benefits. the non- partisan report also predicts

( darya ) another big story we are following... a man is recovering after being stabbed in san francisco's bayview district. it happened on thanksgiving day at around two a-m on gilman avenue near hawes street. police say the 50-year-old victim got into a fight with the 26-year-old man. the man stabbed the victim in the chest and took off. the victim is still in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries. the attacker was later tracked down and arrested. ( darya ) new at 5 this morning... we are hearing from one of the youngest victims of the deadly shooting rampage in

tehama county earlier this month. now the 6-year-old boy says he does not want to go back to the school where the gunman opened fire. alejandro hernandez was shot twice... one bullet hit his foot... the other hit his right lung. that bullet is still lodged in his chest. doctors say it is remarkable that he was able to return home just two weeks after the shooting. rancho tehama elementary school reopened yesterday but alejandro says he is not going back. ( darya ) five people died in the shooting rampage earlier this month. the shooter eventually died in a shootout with police. a gofundme account for alejandro's family

( james ) in the south bay... parents and students in the oak grove school district are concerned that several elementary could soon be closed. the district says it is facing a budget deficit of millions of dollars .... and may have no choice but to consolidate schools. district officials met last night to try and figure out what schools may need to be closed down. the district says it has already approved a plan to layoff staff and offer early retirement in an effort to balance the budget. parents we spoke with say nobody wants their child's school to close down.

guns and a meth lab. last wednesday -- 49-year-old christopher oicles was arrested over a stalking incident with his co-worker. police say the man tried to kidnap and rape the woman. police say the man admitted he was becoming more aggressive and wanted to be with her. ( james ) a man was seriously injured when two groups began fighting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. the fight broke out around early sunday morning on eddy street near larkin street. police say people were armed with a variety of weapons... including baseball bats and machetes. during the fight... a man was shot. he was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the shooter was last seen running down eddy street... police have not released a description of the shooter.
