fire damage first hand.. he toured ventura county neighborhoods ravaged by the wildfires that have killed at least one person and destroyed hundreds of homes and other buildings. there are about 85-hundred firefighters battling the flames... including some from here in the bay area. omar jimenez reports from ventura county where crews are trying to get control over the fires. california gov. jerry brown says deadly and destructive wildfires in winter are "the new normal."brown on saturday toured ventura county neighborhoods ravaged by a weeklong wildfire that killed at least one person and destroyed hundreds of homes and other buildings.at a news conference, brown said drought and climate change mean california faces a "new reality" where lives and property are continually threatened by fire, at a cost of billions of dollars.he

(marty) new this morning... a raging brush fire broke out in the hills of l-a suburb of monrovia, last night. the norumbega fire burned five acres. the fire broke out near several homes that had to be evacuated. at it's peak , the fire appeared to engulf a water reservoir at the top of a hill. the fire was later fully contained and mandatory evacuations lifted. (marty) in the east bay... oakland city workers are in the sixth day of a strike...and are looking for a mediator to step in tomorrow and help end the impass. during the walkout many residents are finding it difficult to maintain normalcy

in their lives. the s-e-i-u -- which represents the majority of the 3-thousand workers on strike -- says salary increases aside- the city's offer doesn't address key issues of understaffing, excessive mandatory overtime hours, unsafe working conditions and a heavy reliance on part-time staff. with vital city services cut off -- this strike is affecting oakland residents. one mom tells kron4 she paid $200 dollars for this month's after school program at the parks and rec center -and now it's closed on short notice. ( marty ) in novato... the fire department is taking extra precautions to make sure they're ready in the case of a major fire. they are seeing wind patterns here similar to thouse in southern california with the santa ana winds. kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke to fire officials to learn more about fire precautions. it's not wildfire season.. but

the novato fire department is prepared for one. they say the weather is creating conditions that would spread a fire quickly.gerald mccarthy/battalion chief, novato fire department:this year we have not had the persistent wetting rain that we would normally experience in december. we still have a lot of last year's dead vegetation present combined combined with low humidtiies that we measured with some east winds that occured wednesday thursday and friday. fire officials.. it's often the wind that makes a bad fire worse.. which is what the santa ana winds did in southern california. so they've prepared their wildfire equipment.. which would normally be stored away this time of year.gerald mccarthy/battalion chief, novato fire department:there is still a threat of wildland fires to our community and communities throughout our area that we do serve and reinstituted our wildlands fire season and what brought to bare is the use of a little bit diferent operational deployment in that our wildland fire engines were pressed back into service that our folks staffed normally during summer time now are doing so in december.residents

we talked to say.. after the sonoma fires.. and now the fires in southern california.. they've also taken action to prepare for the worst.margaret fink/novato i put all the pictures all our important pictures and documents on to a thumb drive and i put the thumb drive right near the front door so no matter how fast we're running out of the house we can grab that thing and run. we finally have our smoke detectors up, lots of them i think we probably have about five now they're hanging as if they are lights on the ceiling and now we just kind of thing from day to day are we ready? ( marty ) san diego firefighters -- already battling the lilac fire -- had to help stop a house fire that

started when a small plane crashed into the home... two people on board were killed. authorities say the plane had just taken off from an airport a half a mile away when there was some sort of problem.. the pilot tried to land in a field behind the home. but the plane crashed into the home, sparking the fire. no one was in to home at the time of the crash. but according to neighbors the family dog was killed. ( marty ) in the east bay... a reminder to lock your car even when it is parked in your driveway. in danville on tuesday, a home owner's survelliance camera caught this of a car robbery. police say it shows the man going into this car and putting things into his bag. according to police, the thief was going through unlocked cars in the area of hartford road. ( marty ) global criticism is mounting after president trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. the move breaks with long-standing u.s. policy. it sparked protests across the arab and muslim worlds. there was a demonstration for

palestine at u-n plaza yesterday. it was organized by san francisco state students. they came to say that jerusalem is the capital of palestine. ( marty ) arab foreign ministers held an emergency meeting to come up with a unified response to president trump's decision. some there said this raises a question about washington's role as a peace mediator, not just in the middle east but in the ( marty ) california assemblyman matt dababneh (dah-bob-nay) is resigning after a lobbyist says he sexually assaulted her. the los angeles democrat says in his resignation letter that the allegation is not true. however he no longer believes he can effectively serve his district. lobbyist pamela lopez says that dababneh pushed her into a bathroom during a las vegas social event and inappropriately touched himself in front of her. dababneh's

( marty ) thousands of firefighters are still on the front lines battling wildfires in southern california. there are six major fires in southern california that are still burning this morning. 85-hundred firefighters are on the front lines this morning. the thomas fire is by far the largest burning now. it's burned 148-thousand acres in ventura

county. that's more than four times the size of the tubbs fire here in the bay area. the six fires have destroyed 793 structures. while the situation has improved there are still major concerns. 60 mile per hour wind gusts forecast today for the los angeles area. other life-threatening illness. the entire family was invited to join in. kron 4's jeff pierce shows how everyone enjoyed this special day. on saturday morning there was a police motorcade fit for a presidential arrival with police chiefs from across the bay area waiting for the honored guests. those guests were fifty four families who had children undergoing cancer treatment at local hospitals and each family was welcomed by those chief law enforecment officers.nat soundit's not often that we all get together and do something nice for the community, especially for these kids so this is great.we definitely are grateful to be part of this event. the strength and the courage these families show it's inspiring. those kids were welcomed by a red carpet and a long greeting line of nearly a hundred law enforcement officers and volunteers.today is just an

unbelievable event to see the kids getting out of the cars, smiles on their faces and what they're going through it's just amazing. it's a great day. the event known as fantasy flight is put on by the cops care cancer foundation and is funded by law enforcement agencies.i was a cancer survivor at lucille packer children's hospital at stanford, we came across a little girl who was trying to raise money for the hospital, we were in special ops at the time and we said if she can do it why can't we.police agencies throughout the southbay made it possible. we're volunteering our time and our dollars to make this thing happen.it's amazing all the cops put this together makes the children feel special it's awesome.the families spent their afternoon with music, games and prizes waiting for the guest of honor who arrived on that fantasy flight.as it turns out santa's sleigh breaks down every year so he has to be rescued by the san jose police department.the thought is this is a day

( marty ) this holiday season, a new group is working at some of san francisco's bart stations to help the homeless. they're getting people connected with helpful resources. kron four's spencer blake reports from the embarcadero station with if you've ever been in a bart station, you've probably encountered homeless people in a station or two.district nine bart director bevan dufty says homelessness is one of the problems the board hears about from riders frequently. recently bart and muni started working together to do more for the homeless at the stations than just kicking them out."i think it's really important to have professionals that can really guide people into services and care and i think it's gonna have a big impact."each transit agency pitched in 125 thousand dollars to form a homeless outreach team at four downtown stations - embarcadero, montgomery,

powell street, and civic center.similar teams have existed before under the department of public health, but they had a rule that they couldn't go into the ticketing or train levels of the stations.but the new team, which started in november, made contacts with 39 homeless people at the stations in the first two weeks to offer services to them."it's a range of things; some might go to shelters, some might simply need an id in order to qualify for benefits. someone might want to return home."29 of those people accepted the services.currently the bart board is working with alameda, san mateo, and contra costa counties as well to hopefully start similar teams around the bay area."i think it's a good step in the right direction. yeah, i've definitely noticed there's been a lot the longer i've rode bart."riders like that man say they see more homeless people at the shared stations we mentionedand though he said there's not a noticeable difference in homeless numbers yet, bart hopes it the services the connect people with will keep them from coming back."ya know, i think we're kind of turning the corner. i think this is definitely a priority for us at bart to respond to riders who experience this and really want to see us involved."

( marty ) an injured sea turtle in san diego has a chance for a better life - thanks to three-d printing technology. this loggerhead turtle was found partly paralyzed four years ago, with a large gap in its shell. but that gap became a serious problem as the turtle grew. the birch aquarium came up with a solution. officials teamed up with u-s san diego's digital media lab to build the turtle a brace using three-d printers. the brace is made of plastic and precisely fits the turtle's shell. officials say it's working well for now - but the turtle will need another brace when it's fully grown. adlib seven day.
