they'regoing through doors here. youhave to have security to escort you in. it is a very sombermood. they got the news like wegot the news that san francisco mayor died in the overnight hours. i just talked to mysources at the san francisco police department. thishappened around 11:00 last night. according to intosources the mayor was shopping at the safeway when he collapsed. it went over theradio as a person down, a medical emergency. they rushedto the safeway. when they gotto the safeway that's when they realized that it was the san francisco mayor, 65 years old. they rushed him to the hospital. unfortunately he died. we'realso hearing that he died of a heart attack. again, that issomething that i'm hearing from my sources with the police department. now, in the overnight hours everybody rushed to the hospital. thenews was just so swift and

teared. i knowbeing a politician you have your enemies. but for the most parthis 6 years in office almost 7 years in january that he was pretty much well liked. safe tosay maybe even beloved by many people in san francisco and the bay area. the news very tragicin the overnight hours. i'velearned from my sources that he was shopping at safeway when he collapsed. it came across as amedicine emergency. the sanfrancisco police department, the paramedics had no idea who it was. they just rushed overthere especially when they don't know over their radio system who it was, that's not the important thing. they rushed to safewayand realized it was mayor ed lee. unfortunately reportedlywe're hearing and my sources confirm that he died of a heart attack officially at 1:11 this morning.

weather center taking a look at the forecast for today. good morning. we're seeingclear conditions once again this morning. all of our live shotsconditions at the golden gate bridge, downtown san francisco and san francisco international airport it's going to be almost an exact repeat of what we saw yesterday weather wise. let mestep out of the way for you. wehave another spare the air alert in effect for today. this isthe 5th day in a row, and we're going to see very unhealthy levels for the air quality for mostly in the north bay and along the -- east bay and south bay we'll see levels at the moderate levels. keep that inmind, definitely try to limb your outdoor activity. wakingup to very cold temperatures. freezing in some spots once again this morning. values, 34 degrees right now, 37 for concord. low 40s for our southbay zone. things will beheating up into the mild and warm temperatures into the afternoon hours. we'll see 63in san francisco today. 6 atthe coast for half-moon bay. 70 degrees for livermore. eastbay valley it's going to be a little bit warmer and we'll see that in our south bay, look at that 69 degrees expected for downtown san jose later today. the next couple of days we're going to continue seeing the sunshine all the way through thursday. and you can see thehighs are still going to be topping out in the low 70s for some of our warmest inland spots. overnight thoughtemperatures are going to drop once again into the 30s and 40s. take note the evenings and mornings still be quite cold and wrap up to be beautiful afternoons across the bay area. i'll have my 7-day forecast

coming up in a bit. for nowlet's see what's happening on the roads. >> good morning. just got word of a new trouble spot in the east bay in the city of concord. heads upfor an accident here northbound 680 at 242. looks like avehicle flipped over. it isblocking one lane of traffic. keep that in mind. this is thecounter commute direction. nomainly delays so far. onceagain northbound 680, at 242, it's blocking 2 lanes of traffic. i'll keep an eye on t.then we have crews wrapping up this grass fire that popped up at lafayette. they're reopeningthe left lane. it was heavythrough the scene. it lookslike traffic is getting by without a major delay. just toupdate you on the drive times 680 or south 242 it's still on time, 12 minutes from the highway 4 split out to danville. keep in mind that the overturn once again is northbound the opposite side. bridges lookpretty good.

bay bridge wideopen. san mateo nice and light and the rest of the bay area doing just fine, green all the way around. leave as early as you can. itwill pick up. 4:10 is the time. our otherbreaking news story this morning is a fire at oakland hills. wewant to go to the scene right now. what exactly caught fire? . >> reporter: well, it was 2 homes initially that were under construction. one of thereasons why the fire is so concerning because of the wind that we're seeing right now. i'm on armour drive and snake road. you can see behind me youcan see the emergency lights from the fire engines and police cars there. this is the closestthey would let me get at this point. i'm going to try to movein a bit closer. they told me ican move about a half a block closer coming up in the next half hour. let's take a look atsome video that firefighters took when

this fire started. fire officials first reported the fire around 11:30 p.m. monday at a 2 story house under construction on the 6,800 block of snake road in the oakland hills. fire officials said that multiple houses in the area were on fire including homes in the circle and colton boulevard. they didn't have much else about what caused this fire. i didspeak to a firefighter a few minutes ago, he wouldn't go on camera, he did tell me that it was 2 houses initially that were under construction and 3 other homes caught fire. so he saidthere are multiple homes that were on fire. he said the firesare out right now. what they'redoing is looking at the hot spots. of course this wind isvery concerning. he saidthey're going to be here most of the morning for several more hours watching those hot spots. they're really afraid of how the wind is going to affect those hot spots and whether it could blow embers throughout the area. they'll be here of course for

election to become the state's -- or the lieutenant governor. so mayor ed leeascended to the office at that point. ran an won the officialterm in august of that year and been serving ever since. 6 years in the office. in fact,just a month shy almost a month exactly of being the mayor of san francisco for 7 years. andthis comes as a shock obviously. we have a statement here from the city this morning. you cansee here on the screen it says it is with profound sadness that we confirst time that mayor edwedwin lee passed away at san francisco general hospital. family, friends and colleagues were by his side. our thoughtsand prayers are with his wife anita, his 2 daughters and his family. and obviously the family as well as the entirety of san francisco and the bay area in shock by this news this morning. we want togo to the scene san francisco general hospital.

people showing up mayor ed lee was shopping at the safeway. sohe was doing what we would do shopping sometimes at night. according to my sourceses with the san francisco police department, that they got a phone call, a call about a person down in safeway at around 11:00 last night. they had noidea who it was. they -- it does not go over the radio. they as well asparamedics, fire department rushed to the safeway. theywent inside and realized that it was san francisco mayor ed lee. they rushed him to the hospital but according to my sources they tell me he died of a heart attack. he was san francisco's43rd mayor, 65 years old, the first asian american mayor in san francisco's history. he'soriginally from see at tall but moved down here and has been here for a very long time. iremember when he took over as mayor. i actually interviewedthe then mayor as he was stepping down to become lieutenant governor.

gunned down and at that time diane finestein was not a national figure. sheeffectively became the mayor of san francisco. we do know that they will have a news conference at 10:00 this morning. they gave the news conference, it was about 90 seconds or so. so justsomething to announce his death to make it official, to disspell any possible rumors that they came out and said unfortunately at 65 years old mayor ed lee died at the hospital. they'll have muchmore details and more about what happened in an in-depth news conference. i'm sure they'regathering a lot of people possibly the lieutenant governor who is still popular in san francisco that possibly he could come down here as well to be in attendance at that news conference. so more people areshowing up, more people are leaving and we hope to have reaction from them including the former san

they told me just a fewhours ago this whole area was engulfed in flames. so they'revery scared especially because of the wind that they're seeing right now. earlier you couldsee more wind but you could still see that wind a little bit. it's blowing my hairaround. we're on snake road. let's take a look at some video of earlier or actually yeah, last night when that fire started. now, fire officialssay the fire was first reported around 11:30 p.m. a 2 storyhouse that is under construction on the 6,800 block of snake road caught fire. and that's whereit all started. they sayseveral other homes caught fire from there. they say multiplehouses were on fire on the circle and colton boulevard as well. right now i was talkingto firefighters as they were spraying that house down and told me that i needed to be ready to leave at a moment's notice in case that fire started spreading or that smoke actually the flames started to kickback up again. so they aretaking a very close look.

to san francisco general hospital and unfortunately was not able to be saved by the doctors there. andthe word came that at 1:11 this morning he was pronounced dead at the hospital. and the bayarea reeling this morning. we've been getting various reaction from people at the hospital and also on social media. we'll be sharing thatwith you throughout the morning. the mayor, a long history here in san francisco. he became theexecutive director of the san francisco human rights commission back in 1991. he was appointed director of public works in 2000 and in 2005 he was appointed by the then mayor to a 5-year term of city administrator and reappointed to that post in 2010. and he was selected bythe board of supervisors to fill the vacant mayoral seat in january of 2011 and officially elected to that office that following november. and thenreelected once again in

are following... san fr ed lee . our breaking news story this morning san francisco mayor ed lee passing away this morning at the age of 65. we had thatannouncement, an emergency announcement from city officials early this morning. they held apress conference within the 3:00 hour this morning from the doorsteps of san francisco general hospital to announce the news and confirm to everybody that the mayor did pass away just after 1:00 this morning. he was rushed to the hospital suffering from an apparent heart attack. that's not from cityofficials that is from our own independent sourcing. we're at the hospital talking to officials there and talking to sources and we were able to get that piece of information.

mayor ed lee passed away early this morning at the age of 65 . we will have more on that in a just a bit. another story is a fire in oakwood hills that broke out this morning. they have been watching for hotspots throughout the night. let's look at a live report right now. >> reporter: you can see the wind is heavy right now and that is one of the concerns right now. this is near oakwood hills. that bridge there is a concern because the hillside under the bridge started to burn. you can see firefighters on the bridge. it is dark, but there are two firefighters on the bridge right now spraying down the bridge. under the bridge and the fire. they are worried this may have compromised the bridge, the

and fire weather continues deeper into the week. it will be a long road ahead for those firefighters.>> the northbay storm is long gone and the tubbs fire has claimed one more victim. 43-year-old michel azarian was unable to overcome the injuries suffered when he was burned in the fire . he was laid to rest over the weekend. more than 60% of his body was burned. he was flown to uc davis hospital where for two months he fought to stay alive. he lost the battle. >> it is so tough. we know he will survive this and get through this. unfortunately, it was too much, it was just too much. can you imagine from two and a

clock a.m. until 9:00 a.m., seven hours in a firestorm? >> reporter: and the whole time he was in the hospital, the company he worked for was there through his recovery. they even flew his mom in from lebanon so that she could spend his last few days with him. there are homes and lots destroyed in northbay and they are beginning to sell. investors are interested and offers are pouring in from those putting their homes on the market. many say it is easier to sell and begin a new life somewhere else. this is what the family cannot bear to see. acres and acres of scorched land . one man took us on a tour of his neighborhood. they were the first victims to sell their home in sonoma county. they got an average price of 160-$180,000 -- $160,000-$180,000 per lot.

good morning. if you are just waking up and joining us this morning, this news may come as a shock. mayor ed lee i just 65 years old is dead of an apparent heart attack. >> the office now falls to the board of supervisors, london breed . we want to go live at the scene where will tran has been reporting for us since we came on air this morning. >> you were the first to get the details. >> reporter: according to my sources, mayor ed lee was shopping at safeway last night when he collapsed in the store.

the workers called 911 and the call came across the radio system to the paramedics and police officers. they had no idea it was mayor ed lee. they knew it was a person who was down with medical issues. they looked at the person and realized it is mayor ed lee . they rushed him to the hospitals which is one of the best in the world for trauma. the doctors could not save his life and at 1:11, doctors pronounced him dead. he died from an apparent heart attack. i tracked down former san francisco mayor willie brown and he cannot believe his beloved friend has died. he said in his words, we lost our leader. the two had been friends for decades. according to willie brown, he pushed for ed lee to be part of

his administration. at one point he was a civil rights activist and he was the first asian-american mayor of san francisco. he leaves behind his wife and two daughters. according to willie brown, as far as he knew, mayor ed lee had no medical issues. he was fine and always happy and outgoing . i got a chance to track down mr. brown by way of a phone call. here is his conversation when he found out the news about his beloved friend. >> when the telephone rang, shortly after 1:00 a.m. and i was awakened, if it had not been kim, i would not have believed anybody else. then london breed instantly was on the line as well . and it was devastating. i am still numb and i can't process it.

>> reporter: he says it will take a long time. actually they last saw each other on saturday and they had a good time and it was mayor ed lee introducing people to willie brown. the two have known each other for decades and willie brown said that at one time ed lee needed to move from oakland to san francisco to work for san francisco and take pride in the city. he said that he helped ed lee and his family buy a home in san francisco. he is grieving over the death of his friend and he said, i made ed lee a lot of money with that home. of course it is not a laughing matter, he was just thinking of good memories with his friend. i can tell you that the acting mayor, london breed had a news

suspended, a lot of city services will be open once again today. happening today. the man accused of killing sierra lamarr is officially sentenced. convicted in may for the teenager's death. he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. his official sentencing was delayed and the request was denied. they will now have sentencing. sierra's body has not been found. she went missing on her way to school in 2012. >> a san francisco drummer is guilty of one of the most -- the worst mass killings in history. he showed no emotion when the guilty verdict came in. after deliberating, he was found guilty of killing five members of one family with a hammer in 2012.

well, san francisco mayor ed lee, according to my sources, was shopping at s just a medica. paramedics and police rushed to safeway and they realized it was mayor ed lee . they rushed him here and for about two hours the doctors worked on him. at socal -- 1:11 in the morning, the doctors cannot do more and he was pronounced dead . the acting mayor is london breed and she laid out how she is now the acting mayor of san francisco because she is depressed -- was the president of the board of supervisors. a lot of people have turned out. they are expressing condolences to the family of mayor ed lee as well. i reached out to the former san francisco mayor, willie brown. the two have been friends for decades and it was mayor brown who told

has been serving since 2012. she was reelected in 2016 and before that, she was reelected as the president of the board of supervisors by her peers. she is known as a champion in the african immunity -- african- american community and she led the african-american arts and culture complex for years and she is well known in the community. a lot of people are just finding out about her new role and about the passing of mayor ed lee. i talked to someone here in city hall and listen to what they had to say. >> there are things like homelessness and things like that. i feel like i connection. he died and you feel lost. the great spirit in san francisco is gone.

>> reporter: we expect more people to come to city hall to pay respects. of course there -- we are waiting on the press conference from acting mayor london breed . we will stand by for that press conference. also overnight, fire broke out in the hills. >> lydia pantazes has more on that story . >> reporter: firefighters are fighting the flames under the bridge. we have seen the embers start to flare up and we have seen small fires under the bridge. they are scared the bridge may have been compromised because of the bridge. some of the gravel gave way when the fire started. the fire started at 11:30 p.m. last night. the home was under construction and that's where the fire started. it started spreading and six homes were threatened. we talk

at the drivetime of a whopping 45 minutes to make it to the 101 . it will take time for the traffic to recover. i will check in on the bay bridge and 80 w. coming up. back to you. in south bay, a major budget deficit in the millions and the school district is figuring out what that will mean. schools may have to close, which one? a community meeting was held to talk about possible consolidation. the eight schools considered for consolidation should remain on the list, the teachers don't think it is a good idea. >> our campuses closed and our teachers will be moving someplace else to another campus where they will be crowded. if teachers come to us, they will have partition paid cash partitions and not real walls with 27 kids in the classroom. it is not a great learning

environment, but teachers do a great job because that's what we do. >> another community meeting will be held monday at davis elementary. a school district in east bay is going through the same issue and teachers are rallying for what they call morally wrong cuts. they are facing a potential suitor that shortfall of $50 million and they are looking for broad cuts. they are asking to limit the cuts to $2 million. they will make a final cut some -- a final vote tomorrow. it is 6:43 and the top story out of san francisco is that mayor ed lee has died of an apparent heart attack. he died at the hospital around 1:00 this morning and we continue to get reaction this morning from the political world. representatives eric's wall well tweeted, we will miss -- miss

to the rest.>> and antioch, police say they believe they have solved the oldest cold case. back in june 2019 80, suzanne was abducted, raped and murdered . she was taken in the middle of the night from her sister's home in antioch where she was babysitting. her body was found in the san joaquin river near the bridge. the antioch police department was able to connect a suspect to the murder using dna evidence. they have taken mitchell bacon into custody. he was arrested at 5:00 near his home without incident. police hope that this will bring closure to the family. >> we are a static a arrest was made in the case. it will not bring suzanne back to her family's life. our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we hope this offers some level of peace

to the family. >> there was not enough evidence to connect him to the crime. he has a long history of violence. his crimes at -- include assault, burglary and rape. he is being held on charges of kidnapping and murder. it is possible he may have additional victims and if anybody has additional information about this man or the case, give them a call. in antioch, kron 4 news. the fire in ventura county is the fifth largest in state history. it is larger than the city of new york and it is now 25% contained. it has threatened 25,000 homes and buildings and at last check, 800 structures have been destroyed by the fires. red flag warnings have been extended. they were set to

expire yesterday afternoon, but they have been extended as the wind continues to blow. the toughest fire -- the thomas fire has claimed one more victim -- the tubs fire has claimed one more -- the tubbs fire fire has claimed michel azarian . he was burned in the fire and flown to uc davis hospital where he spent two months trying to recover. two weeks ago he lost the battle. >> michelle, it is so tough. we knew that he would survive this and get through this, but unfortunately it was just too much. you can imagine from 2:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. in a firestorm. that is seven hours. >> his company supported him through recovery.
