they'regoing through doors here. youhave to have security to escort you in. it is a very sombermood. they got the news like wegot the news that san francisco mayor died in the overnight hours. i just talked to mysources at the san francisco police department. thishappened around 11:00 last night. according to intosources the mayor was shopping at the safeway when he collapsed. it went over theradio as a person down, a medical emergency. they rushedto the safeway. when they gotto the safeway that's when they realized that it was the san francisco mayor, 65 years old. they rushed him to the hospital. unfortunately he died. we'realso hearing that he died of a heart attack. again, that issomething that i'm hearing from my sources with the police department. now, in the overnight hours everybody rushed to the hospital. thenews was just so swift and

horrible that they had an emergency news conference about 15 minutes ago. the president of the board of supervisor she effectively is now san francisco's 44th mayor. she came out and had a news conference. here's what she hadto say about the passing of the mayor. . >> good morning. thank you for being here. it iswith profound sadness that i confirm the mayor passed away early this morning tease december 12th at 1:11 a.m. family, friends and colleagues were by his side.

i assume the role as mayor effective immediately. i want to you thank the incredible staff for their care and professionalism and we will be holding a second press conference tomorrow at city hall at 10 a.m. thank you.

[audio difficulty] mayor ed lee with his death, it's the first time in 39 years that a president of the board of supervisors has assumed the role because of a death to a mayor in san francisco. it's the firsttime since 1978 that the president of the board of supervisors effectively becomes the mayor of san francisco. the last time it happened was -- a very tragic day. more people are showingup. i'm trying to track downthe former san francisco mayor brown to get his reaction as well. i know they were goodfriends. i'd love to hear fromhim as well. and obviously alot of people are showing up right now. if you're justwaking up horrible news, mayor ed lee, 65 years old a native -- excuse me -- a native of seattle who

moved to san francisco and became one of the most prominent mayors in the nation. >> you saw the president of the board of supervisors now the acting mayor and all those others standing around. what was the sense fromthem? obviously this was ashock for everybody, but just you being there personally, what did you see on their faces. . >> it was almost like let's be strong, this is our moment to keep it together. i know thatmy camerawoman and colleague talked to one of mayor ed lee's aides and she's expressed to her that our condolences, we know he was well like and on behalf of kron 4 we express our condolence. she started to wellup, her eyes

teared. i knowbeing a politician you have your enemies. but for the most parthis 6 years in office almost 7 years in january that he was pretty much well liked. safe tosay maybe even beloved by many people in san francisco and the bay area. the news very tragicin the overnight hours. i'velearned from my sources that he was shopping at safeway when he collapsed. it came across as amedicine emergency. the sanfrancisco police department, the paramedics had no idea who it was. they just rushed overthere especially when they don't know over their radio system who it was, that's not the important thing. they rushed to safewayand realized it was mayor ed lee. unfortunately reportedlywe're hearing and my sources confirm that he died of a heart attack officially at 1:11 this morning.

weather center taking a look at the forecast for today. good morning. we're seeingclear conditions once again this morning. all of our live shotsconditions at the golden gate bridge, downtown san francisco and san francisco international airport it's going to be almost an exact repeat of what we saw yesterday weather wise. let mestep out of the way for you. wehave another spare the air alert in effect for today. this isthe 5th day in a row, and we're going to see very unhealthy levels for the air quality for mostly in the north bay and along the -- east bay and south bay we'll see levels at the moderate levels. keep that inmind, definitely try to limb your outdoor activity. wakingup to very cold temperatures. freezing in some spots once again this morning. [audio difficulty]. downtown san francisco right now. oaklandcoming in at 42. looking atsome of our east bay

values, 34 degrees right now, 37 for concord. low 40s for our southbay zone. things will beheating up into the mild and warm temperatures into the afternoon hours. we'll see 63in san francisco today. 6 atthe coast for half-moon bay. 70 degrees for livermore. eastbay valley it's going to be a little bit warmer and we'll see that in our south bay, look at that 69 degrees expected for downtown san jose later today. the next couple of days we're going to continue seeing the sunshine all the way through thursday. and you can see thehighs are still going to be topping out in the low 70s for some of our warmest inland spots. overnight thoughtemperatures are going to drop once again into the 30s and 40s. take note the evenings and mornings still be quite cold and wrap up to be beautiful afternoons across the bay area. i'll have my 7-day forecast

coming up in a bit. for nowlet's see what's happening on the roads. >> good morning. just got word of a new trouble spot in the east bay in the city of concord. heads upfor an accident here northbound 680 at 242. looks like avehicle flipped over. it isblocking one lane of traffic. keep that in mind. this is thecounter commute direction. nomainly delays so far. onceagain northbound 680, at 242, it's blocking 2 lanes of traffic. i'll keep an eye on t.then we have crews wrapping up this grass fire that popped up at lafayette. they're reopeningthe left lane. it was heavythrough the scene. it lookslike traffic is getting by without a major delay. just toupdate you on the drive times 680 or south 242 it's still on time, 12 minutes from the highway 4 split out to danville. keep in mind that the overturn once again is northbound the opposite side. bridges lookpretty good.

bay bridge wideopen. san mateo nice and light and the rest of the bay area doing just fine, green all the way around. leave as early as you can. itwill pick up. 4:10 is the time. our otherbreaking news story this morning is a fire at oakland hills. wewant to go to the scene right now. what exactly caught fire? . >> reporter: well, it was 2 homes initially that were under construction. one of thereasons why the fire is so concerning because of the wind that we're seeing right now. i'm on armour drive and snake road. you can see behind me youcan see the emergency lights from the fire engines and police cars there. this is the closestthey would let me get at this point. i'm going to try to movein a bit closer. they told me ican move about a half a block closer coming up in the next half hour. let's take a look atsome video that firefighters took when

this fire started. fire officials first reported the fire around 11:30 p.m. monday at a 2 story house under construction on the 6,800 block of snake road in the oakland hills. fire officials said that multiple houses in the area were on fire including homes in the circle and colton boulevard. they didn't have much else about what caused this fire. i didspeak to a firefighter a few minutes ago, he wouldn't go on camera, he did tell me that it was 2 houses initially that were under construction and 3 other homes caught fire. so he saidthere are multiple homes that were on fire. he said the firesare out right now. what they'redoing is looking at the hot spots. of course this wind isvery concerning. he saidthey're going to be here most of the morning for several more hours watching those hot spots. they're really afraid of how the wind is going to affect those hot spots and whether it could blow embers throughout the area. they'll be here of course for

election to become the state's -- or the lieutenant governor. so mayor ed leeascended to the office at that point. ran an won the officialterm in august of that year and been serving ever since. 6 years in the office. in fact,just a month shy almost a month exactly of being the mayor of san francisco for 7 years. andthis comes as a shock obviously. we have a statement here from the city this morning. you cansee here on the screen it says it is with profound sadness that we confirst time that mayor edwedwin lee passed away at san francisco general hospital. family, friends and colleagues were by his side. our thoughtsand prayers are with his wife anita, his 2 daughters and his family. and obviously the family as well as the entirety of san francisco and the bay area in shock by this news this morning. we want togo to the scene san francisco general hospital.

will, you were the one that reported for us first this morning of the announcement from the supervisor or the president of the supervisor london breed. go ahead and walk us through again. she now is the actingmayor, correct? . >> reporter: according to the city charter she effectively becomes san francisco's 44th mayor. i want to move thecamera around. you can seepolice officers showing up. youcan see that silver car leaving the scene. a lot of associates,friends, they showed up to the hospital in the overnight hours. they too, obviously were shocked by the passing of mayor ed lee. i tried to talk to them as they walked out but said we have nothing to say at this point. they are keeping it together. the shock is still there once the reality hits maybe they will be moved by this. just beingout here everybody seems to be strong at this point. mayor ed lee -- you can see

people showing up mayor ed lee was shopping at the safeway. sohe was doing what we would do shopping sometimes at night. according to my sourceses with the san francisco police department, that they got a phone call, a call about a person down in safeway at around 11:00 last night. they had noidea who it was. they -- it does not go over the radio. they as well asparamedics, fire department rushed to the safeway. theywent inside and realized that it was san francisco mayor ed lee. they rushed him to the hospital but according to my sources they tell me he died of a heart attack. he was san francisco's43rd mayor, 65 years old, the first asian american mayor in san francisco's history. he'soriginally from see at tall but moved down here and has been here for a very long time. iremember when he took over as mayor. i actually interviewedthe then mayor as he was stepping down to become lieutenant governor.

and it washim who personally hand picked mayor ed lee to become the mayor of san francisco. that's howwell he was liked within the san francisco political office, the machine of san francisco, the political system. he would havebeen in office for a full 7 years as san francisco mayor but he died obviously in the overnight hours, the official time of death is 1:11 this morning. they held an emergencynews conference. a lot ofpeople rushed here. we heldthat news conference and showed you what london breed said about 15 or 20 minutes ago. she wasvery strong, very professional. she said now effectively i become the mayor of san francisco. this is the firsttime that the president of the board supervisors has taken over as the mayor of san francisco in an emergency capacity since 1978. the last time it happened was a very dark day in san francisco when then mayor they were

gunned down and at that time diane finestein was not a national figure. sheeffectively became the mayor of san francisco. we do know that they will have a news conference at 10:00 this morning. they gave the news conference, it was about 90 seconds or so. so justsomething to announce his death to make it official, to disspell any possible rumors that they came out and said unfortunately at 65 years old mayor ed lee died at the hospital. they'll have muchmore details and more about what happened in an in-depth news conference. i'm sure they'regathering a lot of people possibly the lieutenant governor who is still popular in san francisco that possibly he could come down here as well to be in attendance at that news conference. so more people areshowing up, more people are leaving and we hope to have reaction from them including the former san

they told me just a fewhours ago this whole area was engulfed in flames. so they'revery scared especially because of the wind that they're seeing right now. earlier you couldsee more wind but you could still see that wind a little bit. it's blowing my hairaround. we're on snake road. let's take a look at some video of earlier or actually yeah, last night when that fire started. now, fire officialssay the fire was first reported around 11:30 p.m. a 2 storyhouse that is under construction on the 6,800 block of snake road caught fire. and that's whereit all started. they sayseveral other homes caught fire from there. they say multiplehouses were on fire on the circle and colton boulevard as well. right now i was talkingto firefighters as they were spraying that house down and told me that i needed to be ready to leave at a moment's notice in case that fire started spreading or that smoke actually the flames started to kickback up again. so they aretaking a very close look.

. our breaking news story continues to be that the shocking and tragic news that san francisco mayor ed lee died unexpectedly early this morning at the age of 65. the mayor wasshopping at a safeway when he collapsed of an apparent heart attack, rushed

to san francisco general hospital and unfortunately was not able to be saved by the doctors there. andthe word came that at 1:11 this morning he was pronounced dead at the hospital. and the bayarea reeling this morning. we've been getting various reaction from people at the hospital and also on social media. we'll be sharing thatwith you throughout the morning. the mayor, a long history here in san francisco. he became theexecutive director of the san francisco human rights commission back in 1991. he was appointed director of public works in 2000 and in 2005 he was appointed by the then mayor to a 5-year term of city administrator and reappointed to that post in 2010. and he was selected bythe board of supervisors to fill the vacant mayoral seat in january of 2011 and officially elected to that office that following november. and thenreelected once again in

are following... san fr ed lee . our breaking news story this morning san francisco mayor ed lee passing away this morning at the age of 65. we had thatannouncement, an emergency announcement from city officials early this morning. they held apress conference within the 3:00 hour this morning from the doorsteps of san francisco general hospital to announce the news and confirm to everybody that the mayor did pass away just after 1:00 this morning. he was rushed to the hospital suffering from an apparent heart attack. that's not from cityofficials that is from our own independent sourcing. we're at the hospital talking to officials there and talking to sources and we were able to get that piece of information.

wewant to go right back once again, will, you've interacted with the mayor numerous times over the years at press conferences. my impression ofhim was always a jovial man, what was your take on the mayor? . >> i have another j word he was jolly. always jolly. i never officially introduced myself to mayor ed lee. he watches thenews and every time he saw me he would say hey will, hey will. isaw him many times throughout the years. beloved by manypeople in san francisco. just alittle personal story when our executive producer called me this morning around 2:15 and said mayor ed lee has just died. i was like what? i was -- i too, was shocked like ed lee, and he said yes, mayor ed lee, so we all rushed to san francisco general

hospital. notjust us, but dignitaries, family and friends. if you're justwaking up, i did talk to my sources and my sources are from the san francisco police department at around 11:00 last night that according to my sources he was shopping at the safeway when he collapsed. theycalled 911. the call over the radio, the 2 way system did not specify that it was mayor ed lee, just a person down. the police department, paramedics they all rushed to safeway. it was only when theywalked inside that's when they realized that it was mayor ed lee, the 43rd mayor of san francisco. they rushed him tosan francisco general hospital. one of the best hospitals in the world for trauma, emergency, but even the doctors could not save his life. he wasofficially pronounced dead at 1:11 this morning. the newsjust swiftly crossed the bay area across the country as well. people are shocked. at lastcheck we never heard of any medical issues surrounding the 65-year old man.

it appearsthat he was healthy, he was all over the place but he was shopping last night. he didn'thave to go to the hospital. obviously he didn't feel any pain at that time. he wasshopping last night probably like most of us at a time when it is not busy so he can get his work done. even though he's themayor of one of the most icon anybody cities in the world he was doing what most of us would do, shop when it wasn't busy. we did get a chance to track down at the news conference now san francisco's new my, the 44th mayor because of a city charter. she was the president of the board of supervisors. immediately she becomes san francisco's 44th mayor. sheheld a news conference. shekept it together, was very professional. just said thatnow she is the mayor and they'll have much more on this at city hall at 10:00 this morning. wegot a chance to talk to some of mayor ed lee's friends, staff members, and i know and

death people taken back by this shocked by the news including kron 4 will tran, unfortunately they could not save his life. i got off the phone with mayor willie brown, devastated like we lost a leader that he last spoke to mayor ed lee on saturday he was up around 1:00 in the morning rushed here and officially announced dead at 1:11 this morning according to mayor willie brown he was up at 1:00 in the morning when he got the phone call from supervisor jane kim. had it not been for jane kim he would not have believed it that as far as he knew mayor ed lee was a model of health, never complained about any health issues then right after he got the phone call from jane kim,

from the london breed san francisco's 44th mayor. he was shocked that when he was the mayor of san francisco, willie brown, that he liked ed lee from the very beginning that he wanted ed lee to become part of his administration, they have been friends ever since. as far as mayor ed lee, according to my sources he wasshopping in the safe way englewood when he collapsed. the people in safe way called 911 that came over the 911 system the san francisco police department the paramedics had no idea who that person that collapsed on the ground was as far as they were concerned it was a medical emergency, no more no less than anybody else they rushed out there, they came in to safeway when they realized it was mayor ed lee. they rushed him to the hospital now according to my sources,

2012. that was the post that we had when gavin newsome became the lieutenant governor when ed lee was selected by the board of supervisors i just thought i don't want to be mayor but he decided to stay on and ran for office and elected and re- elected, he was san francisco's mayor since 2012, serving until 2015 when he suddenly died last night it was 1978 he graduated from the high school in berkeley. when this happened before 1978 was the last time 39 years ago that a mayor died in office. the board of supervisors president had to assume the job of mayor diane feinstein assuming the role after the assassination of george masconi. 39 years ago is where we had a mayor die in office and the

area. let's take a look at video what we saw at 11:30 last night what happened was 11:30, firefighters were called out to this area because of a fire at a home that was under construction that fire started to spread and eventually affected about 6 homes if not more right now they are trying to make sure that the fire doesn't affect more homes but at least 6 homes were damaged in this area as i said right now they are looking at those hot spots to see to control those hot spots to make sure this fire doesn't spread, the fire chief we'll hear from them coming up later in the show, he said the biggest concern is those embers start to fly around and eventually hit other homes in the area. 5:11 is the time right now as we continue on the kron 4 news, ed lee's passing he died just a few hours ago at 1:00

the same time with no services for the city is what help change the city tone. >> now that the strike has been suspended many city services like the head start programlibraries and rec centers will once again be open. the man convicted of killing sierra lamar will be sentenced. lind garcia was convicted in may of first-degree murder for killing sierra a jury sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, his official sentencing was delayed at his attorney's request because they asked for a new trial that request was denied. sierra's body has never been found ever since she went missing on her way to school back in 2012. a jury finds a san francisco plumber in the worse in the city's history, ben luke will be sentenced today he showed little emotion when the guilty verdict came in yesterday after 7 days of deliberations the jury found him guilty of killing 5 members

we lost our leader. the two were friends for decades. willie brown was the mayor of san francisco at one time and he challenged, at that time, ed lee to be part of his administration . at that time, ed lee wasn't living in san francisco and he asked him to move. he helped ed lee by his home and he said they were good friends . they actually spoke the last time to each other on saturday. he said he is still processing the news that mayor ed lee has died. he was shopping at safeway in the ingleside neighborhood when he collapsed. sources in the store called 911 , but they had no idea who the person was when the police and

mayor ed lee passed away early this morning at the age of 65 . we will have more on that in a just a bit. another story is a fire in oakwood hills that broke out this morning. they have been watching for hotspots throughout the night. let's look at a live report right now. >> reporter: you can see the wind is heavy right now and that is one of the concerns right now. this is near oakwood hills. that bridge there is a concern because the hillside under the bridge started to burn. you can see firefighters on the bridge. it is dark, but there are two firefighters on the bridge right now spraying down the bridge. under the bridge and the fire. they are worried this may have compromised the bridge, the

fire has. they are going to get engineers out here to make sure the bridge is safe to drive on. right now the bridge is closed and there is caution tape. it is blocking firefighters from going onto the bridge right now. the fire started at 11:30 last night. the bridge was under construction and it started to bird ashburn a two-story home in the area. there are between five and six homes that were damaged in this fire. so right now they are looking at hotspots and they have been spraying down hotspots in the area for the last few hours including several homes that are near where we are standing. we spoke with the fire chief about his biggest concern. >> the biggest concern is embers flying for many small fire that may be hidden from the trees and above the trees

lots of sunshine continuing through the work week. look into the work week that it will be nice and temperatures will continue to be mild for the afternoon hours. overnight and early morning it will be quite cold and we are tracking 30s, especially friday night and into saturday. make sure that you stay warm during those chilly hours. now back to the news. james. let's get you the latest as the wind is changing and the fires are burning in southern california. the largest is the thomas in ventura county where these pictures are coming from this morning. it is the fifth largest fire in state history and it is burned more than 230,000 acres. it is twice the size of san jose. the fire is threatening 18,000 homes and buildings as well. we have had confirmations of 800 structures destroyed by the flames. red flag warnings have extended

and fire weather continues deeper into the week. it will be a long road ahead for those firefighters.>> the northbay storm is long gone and the tubbs fire has claimed one more victim. 43-year-old michel azarian was unable to overcome the injuries suffered when he was burned in the fire . he was laid to rest over the weekend. more than 60% of his body was burned. he was flown to uc davis hospital where for two months he fought to stay alive. he lost the battle. >> it is so tough. we know he will survive this and get through this. unfortunately, it was too much, it was just too much. can you imagine from two and a

clock a.m. until 9:00 a.m., seven hours in a firestorm? >> reporter: and the whole time he was in the hospital, the company he worked for was there through his recovery. they even flew his mom in from lebanon so that she could spend his last few days with him. there are homes and lots destroyed in northbay and they are beginning to sell. investors are interested and offers are pouring in from those putting their homes on the market. many say it is easier to sell and begin a new life somewhere else. this is what the family cannot bear to see. acres and acres of scorched land . one man took us on a tour of his neighborhood. they were the first victims to sell their home in sonoma county. they got an average price of 160-$180,000 -- $160,000-$180,000 per lot.

good morning. if you are just waking up and joining us this morning, this news may come as a shock. mayor ed lee i just 65 years old is dead of an apparent heart attack. >> the office now falls to the board of supervisors, london breed . we want to go live at the scene where will tran has been reporting for us since we came on air this morning. >> you were the first to get the details. >> reporter: according to my sources, mayor ed lee was shopping at safeway last night when he collapsed in the store.

the workers called 911 and the call came across the radio system to the paramedics and police officers. they had no idea it was mayor ed lee. they knew it was a person who was down with medical issues. they looked at the person and realized it is mayor ed lee . they rushed him to the hospitals which is one of the best in the world for trauma. the doctors could not save his life and at 1:11, doctors pronounced him dead. he died from an apparent heart attack. i tracked down former san francisco mayor willie brown and he cannot believe his beloved friend has died. he said in his words, we lost our leader. the two had been friends for decades. according to willie brown, he pushed for ed lee to be part of

his administration. at one point he was a civil rights activist and he was the first asian-american mayor of san francisco. he leaves behind his wife and two daughters. according to willie brown, as far as he knew, mayor ed lee had no medical issues. he was fine and always happy and outgoing . i got a chance to track down mr. brown by way of a phone call. here is his conversation when he found out the news about his beloved friend. >> when the telephone rang, shortly after 1:00 a.m. and i was awakened, if it had not been kim, i would not have believed anybody else. then london breed instantly was on the line as well . and it was devastating. i am still numb and i can't process it.

>> reporter: he says it will take a long time. actually they last saw each other on saturday and they had a good time and it was mayor ed lee introducing people to willie brown. the two have known each other for decades and willie brown said that at one time ed lee needed to move from oakland to san francisco to work for san francisco and take pride in the city. he said that he helped ed lee and his family buy a home in san francisco. he is grieving over the death of his friend and he said, i made ed lee a lot of money with that home. of course it is not a laughing matter, he was just thinking of good memories with his friend. i can tell you that the acting mayor, london breed had a news

conference at this spot . she talked for about 90 seconds about the chain of command and how she assumes the role as acting mayor. the last time we had an acting mayor was when george miss coney was gunned down and dianne feinstein became -- george moscone became -- was gunned down and dianne feinstein became the acting mayor. there is a news conference scheduled at 10:00 and the tweets are coming fast and furious from people who knew mayor ed lee. back to you . >> we continue to get a look at what people have to say this morning. those that are dignitaries and in government and have worked closely with ed lee. here is a tweet from pamela harris who says that she is deeply saddened by the death of

was chosen by her peers to be the president of the board of supervisors in 2015. she is a champion of the african- american community and a volunteer in san francisco. she was born and raised in the area and let the african-american arts and culture center for years. she made it a bigger place for the african-american community to enjoy the arts. she is focused right now on mayor ed lee . she gave a brief press conference this morning and this is what she had to say.>> good morning everyone. thank you for being here. it is with profound sadness that i confirm that mayor edwin m. lee passed away early this morning , tuesday, december 12 at one: 11 am at the zuckerberg san francisco general hospital. family, friends and colleagues were by his side.

suspended, a lot of city services will be open once again today. happening today. the man accused of killing sierra lamarr is officially sentenced. convicted in may for the teenager's death. he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. his official sentencing was delayed and the request was denied. they will now have sentencing. sierra's body has not been found. she went missing on her way to school in 2012. >> a san francisco drummer is guilty of one of the most -- the worst mass killings in history. he showed no emotion when the guilty verdict came in. after deliberating, he was found guilty of killing five members of one family with a hammer in 2012.

his attorneys say they plan to appeal the verdict. >> the time is 6:21. let's head to oakland where the go ship warehouse is called a death trap . rodney griffin is the contractor and he said he met to address the issues that he found in the warehouse in 2013 like building a staircase and putting in a fire drawer and taking the gates off the windows. he said the owner never did what was recommended. he said he reported the case to the oakland fire department. there are charges of 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the fire that killed 36 people. still ahead on kron 4 morning news. we will have coverage on the death of mayor ed lee. we will be right back.

well, san francisco mayor ed lee, according to my sources, was shopping at s just a medica. paramedics and police rushed to safeway and they realized it was mayor ed lee . they rushed him here and for about two hours the doctors worked on him. at socal -- 1:11 in the morning, the doctors cannot do more and he was pronounced dead . the acting mayor is london breed and she laid out how she is now the acting mayor of san francisco because she is depressed -- was the president of the board of supervisors. a lot of people have turned out. they are expressing condolences to the family of mayor ed lee as well. i reached out to the former san francisco mayor, willie brown. the two have been friends for decades and it was mayor brown who told

the time, i want you to be part of my administration. for you to be a part of my administration, you need to move from the east bay into the city . ice talk -- i talked to willie brown early this morning and this is what he had to say about his beloved friend. >> he was always so full of hope and life. i have to tell you one story. when he was the human rights director before he became mayor and i wanted to promote him to run purchasing. i told him i would not do that unless he moved to san francisco. he lived in oakland. all the years he had lived in oakland. the house that he got, he got because i asked him to come serve the city and live in the city. his wife tells the story about how fortunate they were to have accepted my challenge.

>> reporter: and the challenge was, be a part of my administration. the other challenge was, we need you to move to san francisco. the rest is history. mayor ed lee took over for gavin newsom who was the mayor at the time. he hand-picked ed lee before he took off to be lt gov. there is reaction from all over the country including senator harris who talks about this is the first time since 1978 that we have an acting mayor because of death. that was when george missoni was gunned down -- george moscone was gunned down and dianne feinstein took over . he got a call from supervisor jan

kim. he said if it had not been for jane kim, he would not have believed that his friend died. as far as he knew, mayor ed lee had met -- no medical issues . back to you. >> we have heard from senator feinstein this morning. the first slide reads, early this morning i learned of ed lee's death. it's a sad day for san francisco and for all of us who knew ed. my thoughts turn to ed's family. especially to anita and tania and brianna. ed was the mayor of a great and challenging city. his quiet management style allowed him to solve problems as they occurred. my heart are with his friends

has been serving since 2012. she was reelected in 2016 and before that, she was reelected as the president of the board of supervisors by her peers. she is known as a champion in the african immunity -- african- american community and she led the african-american arts and culture complex for years and she is well known in the community. a lot of people are just finding out about her new role and about the passing of mayor ed lee. i talked to someone here in city hall and listen to what they had to say. >> there are things like homelessness and things like that. i feel like i connection. he died and you feel lost. the great spirit in san francisco is gone.

>> reporter: we expect more people to come to city hall to pay respects. of course there -- we are waiting on the press conference from acting mayor london breed . we will stand by for that press conference. also overnight, fire broke out in the hills. >> lydia pantazes has more on that story . >> reporter: firefighters are fighting the flames under the bridge. we have seen the embers start to flare up and we have seen small fires under the bridge. they are scared the bridge may have been compromised because of the bridge. some of the gravel gave way when the fire started. the fire started at 11:30 p.m. last night. the home was under construction and that's where the fire started. it started spreading and six homes were threatened. we talk

to the chief about the fire. >> my first concern was about flames spreading from the fire that may have been hidden in the trees and the wind catching them and blowing them. we will be here all night and into the morning to do fire watches. that is until we can get a clear view to see what is going on in the daylight. >> reporter: right now the biggest concern is the wind. you heard the chief say they will be here until the daylight for several more hours to make sure more embers do not pick up . right now, under this bridge and to one side of it there are flareups they are dealing with. reporting in oakland, lydia pantazes , kron 4 news. still on the kron 4 morning news we will have me -- more reaction about the death of san francisco mayor ed lee who died this morning at the young age of 65. we will have more in just a minute.

environment, but teachers do a great job because that's what we do. >> another community meeting will be held monday at davis elementary. a school district in east bay is going through the same issue and teachers are rallying for what they call morally wrong cuts. they are facing a potential suitor that shortfall of $50 million and they are looking for broad cuts. they are asking to limit the cuts to $2 million. they will make a final cut some -- a final vote tomorrow. it is 6:43 and the top story out of san francisco is that mayor ed lee has died of an apparent heart attack. he died at the hospital around 1:00 this morning and we continue to get reaction this morning from the political world. representatives eric's wall well tweeted, we will miss -- miss

have will tran at the hospital where the news was first delivered this morning . more on that to come. we are also tracking weather and traffic as we continue to get you ready to head out the door. let's start with a commute check with robin. the drivetime is high. an accident westbound that was briefly blocking the left lane is out of your way. you can see the damages done and it is creeping through the toll all the way back to marina . a whopping 38 minutes to make your way from the pay gates across the bridge. you can either wait it out or leave early. you normally leave now and i know a lot of you don't have the luxury of waiting it out. a pure gas tank and expect a 38 minute trip -- fill up your gas tank and expect a 38 minute trip through the toll. all

31 in napa. 30s continue for east bay as well. 35 for concord and antioch. in concord you are at 38. also for south bay and san jose. temperatures will change. 64 expected in oakland today and 65 at hayward with sunshine. in east bay, 65 for pleasanton and livermore. 63 in brentwood and 60 or at antioch -- 64 at oneok -- antioch. upper 60s for santa clara, downtown san jose and milpitas. los gatos at 66 today. san at downtown and 64 in the mission district. 64 at san mateo and redwood

city at 65. 67 for petaluma and 68 for santa rosa today. a comfortable 66 degrees in the napa valley. 64 at vallejo and also fairfield. dry conditions for the rest of the work week and into the weekend with lots of sunshine. a mild afternoon and very comfortable. we are still seeing overnight hours for the evening and the morning that it will be chilly. especially from friday night and into saturday. now back to the news. james. another big story this morning is that police and antioch have announced a arrest in a 40-year-old court case -- cold case. he was accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering a 14-year- old who was taken in the middle of the night from her sister's home. it was dna technology that led

to the rest.>> and antioch, police say they believe they have solved the oldest cold case. back in june 2019 80, suzanne was abducted, raped and murdered . she was taken in the middle of the night from her sister's home in antioch where she was babysitting. her body was found in the san joaquin river near the bridge. the antioch police department was able to connect a suspect to the murder using dna evidence. they have taken mitchell bacon into custody. he was arrested at 5:00 near his home without incident. police hope that this will bring closure to the family. >> we are a static a arrest was made in the case. it will not bring suzanne back to her family's life. our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we hope this offers some level of peace

to the family. >> there was not enough evidence to connect him to the crime. he has a long history of violence. his crimes at -- include assault, burglary and rape. he is being held on charges of kidnapping and murder. it is possible he may have additional victims and if anybody has additional information about this man or the case, give them a call. in antioch, kron 4 news. the fire in ventura county is the fifth largest in state history. it is larger than the city of new york and it is now 25% contained. it has threatened 25,000 homes and buildings and at last check, 800 structures have been destroyed by the fires. red flag warnings have been extended. they were set to

expire yesterday afternoon, but they have been extended as the wind continues to blow. the toughest fire -- the thomas fire has claimed one more victim -- the tubs fire has claimed one more -- the tubbs fire fire has claimed michel azarian . he was burned in the fire and flown to uc davis hospital where he spent two months trying to recover. two weeks ago he lost the battle. >> michelle, it is so tough. we knew that he would survive this and get through this, but unfortunately it was just too much. you can imagine from 2:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. in a firestorm. that is seven hours. >> his company supported him through recovery.

they flew his mother in from lebanon so she could spend his last days with him. at home destroyed by the northbay fire -- and homes and plots destroyed by the northbay fire are starting to sell. people are putting their homes on the market instead of rebuilding. they think it is easier to start a new life somewhere else. this is a site that the luke family cannot bear to see any more. acres of scorched land. they were the first to sell their home in sonoma county after the fire. the average price is $160,000- $180,000 per lot. >> repriced it to sell quickly but we did not give it up. >> it breaks my heart. there is nothing there. i just have the memories but i don't have to go back to see. >> reporter: the lot is expected to be cleaned in a few days and they expected new
