city hall and the public is invited to attend. kron 4's camila bernal is live at san francisco's city hall with more. camila? (camila) this was the scene at city hall as thousands come out to pay respects to mayor lee. he died suddenly last tuesday after collapsing while he was out grocery shopping. he was rushed to hospital...but doctors were unable to save his life. former mayor willie brown paid his respects to lee yesterday. he paused inside the rotunda for about a minute... and eventually tips his hat and gives a salute to the mayor. kron four spoke with mayor willie brown before he went inside city hall... this is what he had to say about his late friend...

london breed, u.s. senator dianne feinstein will speak today at mayor ed lee's memorial. as will lieutenant governor and former san francisco mayor gavin newsom. mayor lee's daughters will also speak at the memorial. if you cannot attend join us right here on kron4. we will air live the city hall celebration of life on sunday from 3-5 p-m. a special tribute is also planned from beach blanket babylon. we will also stream the memorial on kron4-dot-com. ( marty ) a bazooka, rocket launcher and a cannonball were just some of the weapons turned in at a gun buyback in san francisco. almost 300 guns and other

weapons were taken off the street at the "no questions asked" buyback event. 100-dollars was offered for each handgun turned over and 200-dollars for each assault weapon. all the promotions for the event were organized by ten men who were serving a life sentence they are now on parole. the men could not attend the event because it would violate their parole. ( marty ) demonstrators gathered in san francisco's union square protesting sanctuary cities. kron four's jeff pierce was there when counter protestors arrived along with a heavy police presence. it is absolutely critical that you are here.the season of joy and love was interupted at union square in san francisco saturday when a group of right leaning protestors came to demonstrate against the town's status as a sanctuary city.no sanctuary city no sanctuary state we're going to fight the sanctuary state.they were met by a counter protest of such size that the san francisco police deemed it volatile

( marty ) mario batali is apologizing for his sexual misconduct and included a recipe for cinnamon rolls in his apology. in his online newsletter the former host of "the chew" acknowledged "many mistakes" and apologized for disappointing family, friends and fans. batali promised to work "every day" to regain the trust and respect of his fans. then he added this: "ps. in case you're searching for a holiday-inspired breakfast, these pizza dough cinnamon rolls are a fan favorite." ( marty ) an east bay church has been vandalized. and police are still looking for the suspect. kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke to parishoners at saint bede's church. disturbing images. a scene around the statue of mary at st. bede's church's vandalized.. her hands sawed off.. while the heads of the children statues around her are removed.jane sanders/parishonerit's very sad that this kind of thing is happening today. it just seems like faith is not as strong as it used to be and to attack something that is so sacred to our church. a lot of people were very hurt by it. athe gross act of vandalism happened three weeks ago. and it's one of several attacks at st. bede's church.jane sanders/parishoneri think the third or four time it's happened. the first time they decapitated the blessed mother statue. we had her repaired and they came back and did it again.and in 2015, liquid that looks like blood was poured over other statues.marcia mahogany/parishonerit's generally pretty safe especially on the school campus it's more like a family atmosphere so yeah iw as really surprised.marcia

( marty ) in the east bay... strong wind blew down a tree in an antioch backyard. it fell onto the house next door. this happened near the corner of 10th and c streets. the top of the tree came down on power lines, then the roof of the home. the homeowner was inside when the tree came crashing down. ( marty ) there were no reports of any injuries. ( marty ) happening now... firefighters around the bay area are keeping a close eye on fire conditions this morning. a "red flag warning" will be in place

until ten this morning -- the first such december warning in four years. kron four's spencer blake reports from the berkeley hills with the latest on how firefighters are gearing up. (vo)typically humidity levels go up at night, which will be a big relief for firefighters here.they worry about relative humidity levels in the teens. that would keep stuff really dry like in the oakland hills where there was a fire early last week.fortunately, he relative humidity levels here have been between 25 and 30 percent in the areas firefighters have been measuring.station seven up here in the hills has had crews out on patrol every couple of hours to see what they're dealing with.(sot)"you go to one location, do a couple readings, go to another location, couple readings throughout the day, and then that gives you an idea of what's going on with the wind speed, humidity, the things we need to be aware of."(vo) neither the wind speed nor the relative humidity has been

(marty) and in southern california, the thomas fire continues to grow amid high winds expected to continue throughout the day. it is now the the third-largest wildfire in modern california history. the fire has charred more than 267-thousand acres. it is 40-percent contained. the blaze broke out twelve days ago and has killed a firefighter and a woman trying to escape the flames. so far, it's cost more than one hundred million dollars to fight the fire. ( marty ) after the break, a big day for bay area football. can the raiders keep their playoff hopes alive -- and can "jimmy g" remain undefeated for the red and gold as he faces his toughest test to date?

we start sports with an exciting local story. galileo high school, located here in san francisco won the 6-a division high school football championship game saturday night. congratulations to the squad who beat vincent memorial 38 to 20 in calexico, california. they drove nine hours to get to the game. calexico is a small town on the california-mexico border...way east of san diego. galileo is the first school in san francisco to bring back this title. this picture was taken last week after one of the team's wins. congrats to the crew over at galileo. way to represent northern california. job well done boys.(jr stone)

a celebration of the life of san francisco's late mayor-- ed lee. it's being held at city hall and the public is invited to attend. this was the scene yesterday at city hall as thousands come out to pay respects to mayor lee. he died suddenly last tuesday night of a heart attack. acting mayor london breed, and u.s. senator dianne feinstein will speak today at the memorial. as will lieutenant governor and former san francisco mayor gavin newsom. mayor lee's daughters will also speak at the memorial. ( marty ) if you cannot attend the service, you can watch it here on kron4. we will air the celebration of ed lee's life live this afternoon starting at 3 o'clock. we will also stream the memorial on kron4-dot- ( marty ) high winds caused some tense moments on the berkeley coast. the coast guard was called in to rescue two people stranded in a boat. it happened at

the old pier just west of the berkeley marina. this is video from the coast guard. a helicopter crew rescued the two boaters. they were hoisted up and taken to the air station in san francisco. no injuries were reported. ( marty ) tis the season for thieves. in recent weeks police have seen an increase in package thefts. and now they are warning you to be prepared. the richmond police department says that many times theives will follow delivery trucks then steal the packages after they are dropped off. if you are expecting a package officers recommend that you request a signature for the package. you can also chose to allow a neighbor to sign for the package. they recommend letting friends and family know when packages will be arriving. surveillance video can be helpful in catching thieves but it doesn't always stop them. ( marty ) hundreds of san francisco children got a bag full of new toys thanks to the efforts of glide memorial church. their annual tradition focuses its toy giveaway on kids living in the

( marty ) in the north bay... police are investigating a sexual assault on the santa rosa junior college campus. officers say a woman student was walking along burbank circle friday afternoon when a man approached her. the person asked the student for a hug and when the woman agreed she says he grabed her buttocks. the student ran away and called police who searched the area but could not find the man. ( marty ) so far, there hasn't been any major legislation to mark president trump's first year in office. but congress could change that in a couple of days with the passage of the republican

((2 shot)) churchill is an unknown to most americans. in fact, it's an unknown to many canadians. but that's okay.. don't let that dissuade you. it's just another reason to visit. are going to fly to churchill via winnipeg, in the canadian province of manitoba. in the five-minute or so drive into town one of the first things you'll notice.. along with the lack of traffic.. is the colorful murals painted on assorted buildings. with a population of around 900, it's what you won't find in churchill that really ups its charm. no traffic lights. one gas station, one grocery store, four restaurants, and i think three bars. set along the shores of the hudson bay, it's picturesque.. and for all intents and purpose.. the easily accessible arctic. ((vo tape 2)) belugas cg2=hudson bay churchill, canada and it has a way of showing off. this stretch of hudson bay and the churchill river is home to what's said to be the world's largest population of beluga whales. from mid-june to mid-september, thousands of whales flood these waters. you can venture out on a big boat or smaller zodiac boats, you can kayak and even paddle board. unlike other types of

whale watching trips, belugas, tend to be a more social bunch and they seem to be curious about people. they're typically not shy. mother nature is never a sure bet, but if you're willing to take a chilly plunge.. ((vo tape 3)) we're talking water temperatures in july in the 40s you can snorkel with the whales. there's no guarantee. i tried twice and only got fleeting glimpses, but sea north tours had me in a fantastic wetsuit, and i would jump at the chance to do it again. many folks come to churchill in search of polar bears. ((vo tape 4)) polar bear jail, tundra buggy, polar bears cg2=tundra buggy frontiers north adventures churchill is home to what's said to be the world's only polar bear jail. when it's a full house, it can hold a crowd of 28 bears, maybe a bit more if there are mothers and cubs involved. no visitors are allowed at the jail, so if you want to up your odds of seeing a polar bear, book a ride on a tundra buggy.. it's like a cross between a monster truck and a school bus. and it goes into the tundra, into the churchill wildlife management area (cwma) on established trails, to look for polar

bears keeping cool along the coast. the drivers and tour leaders know the environment and are incredibly good at spotting guys like this. during the summer tundra tours last about 6 hours. frontiers north runs program geared toward traveling families, so there were many kids on my tundra buggy. we spotted this polar bear within an hour of getting started, so the day was made. the eagle, caribou, and canadian geese were icing on the cake. since we didn't have to search very hard for bears, our driver brendan, gave the dozen plus kids on board a turn driving the tundra buggy. the latest count of the western hudson bay population reportedly puts the polar bears at about 1000 strong, meaning the bears outnumber the humans that call churchill home. for polar bears, churchill is the ultimate spot to call home. ice melts the latest in the summer, and freezes the earliest in the fall. on average there's about 80 frost free days a year here.

( marty ) a bazooka, rocket launcher and a cannonball were just some of the weapons turned in at a gun buyback in san francisco. almost 300 guns and other weapons were taken off the street at the "no questions asked" buyback event. 100-dollars was offered for each handgun turned over and 200-dollars for each assault weapon. all the promotions for the event were organized by ten men who were serving a life sentence they are now on parole. the men could not attend the event because it would violate their parole. celebration of the life of san francisco's late mayor-- ed lee. it's being held at city hall and the public is invited to attend. this was the scene yesterday at city hall as thousands come out to pay respects to mayor lee. he died suddenly last tuesday night while grocery shopping. acting mayor london breed, and u.s. senator dianne feinstein will speak today at the memorial. as will lieutenant governor and former san francisco mayor gavin newsom. mayor lee's daughters will also speak at the memorial. the berkeley coast. the coast guard was called in to rescue two people stranded in a boat. it happened at the old pier just west of the berkeley marina. this is video from the coast guard. a helicopter crew rescued the two boaters. they were hoisted up and taken to the air station in san francisco. no injuries were reported. canada and it has a way of showing off. this stretch of hudson bay and the churchill river is home to what's said to be the world's largest population of beluga whales. from mid-june to mid-september, thousands of whales flood these waters. you can venture out on a big boat or smaller zodiac boats, you can kayak and even paddle board. unlike other types of whale watching trips, belugas, tend to be a more social bunch and they seem to be curious about people. they're typically not shy. mother nature is never a sure bet, but if you're willing to take a chilly plunge.. when it's a full house, it can hold a crowd of 28 bears, maybe a bit more if there are mothers and cubs involved. no visitors are allowed at the jail, so if you want to up your odds of seeing a polar bear, book a ride on a tundra buggy.. it's like a cross between a monster truck and a school bus. and it goes into the tundra, into the churchill wildlife management area (cwma) on established trails, to look for polar bears keeping cool along the coast. the drivers and tour leaders know the environment and are incredibly good at spotting guys like this. during the summer tundra tours last about 6 hours. frontiers north runs program geared toward traveling families, so there were many kids on my tundra buggy. we spotted this polar bear within an hour of getting started, so the day was made. the eagle, caribou, and canadian geese were icing on the cake. since we didn't have to search very hard for bears, our driver brendan, gave the

dozen plus kids on board a turn driving the tundra buggy. the latest count of the western hudson bay population reportedly puts the polar bears at about 1000 strong, meaning the bears outnumber the humans that call churchill home. for polar bears, churchill is the ultimate spot to call home. ice melts the latest in the summer, and freezes the earliest in the fall. on average there's about 80 frost free days a year here.

we will air the celebration of ed lee's life live this afternoon starting at 3 o'clock. we will also stream the memorial on kron4-dot- ( marty ) high winds caused some tense moments on the berkeley coast. the coast guard was called in to rescue two people stranded in a boat. it happened at the old pier just west of the berkeley marina. this is video from the coast guard. a helicopter crew rescued the two boaters. they were hoisted up and taken to the air station in san francisco. no injuries were reported. ( marty ) tis the season for thieves. in recent weeks police have seen an increase in package thefts. and now they are warning you to be prepared. the richmond police department says that many times theives will follow delivery trucks then steal the packages after they are dropped off. if you are expecting a package officers recommend that you request a signature for the package. you can also chose to allow a neighbor to sign for the package. they recommend letting friends and family know when packages will

polar bears cg2=tundra buggy frontiers north adventures churchill is home to what's said to be the world's only polar bear jail. when it's a full house, it can hold a crowd of 28 bears, maybe a bit more if there are mothers and cubs involved. no visitors are allowed at the jail, so if you want to up your odds of seeing a polar bear, book a ride on a tundra buggy.. it's like a cross between a monster truck and a school bus. and it goes into the tundra, into the churchill wildlife management area (cwma) on established trails, to look for polar bears keeping cool along the coast. the drivers and tour leaders know the environment and are incredibly good at spotting guys like this. during the summer tundra tours last about 6 hours. frontiers north runs program geared toward traveling families, so there were many kids on my tundra buggy. we spotted this polar bear within an hour of getting started, so the day was made. the eagle, caribou, and canadian geese were icing on the cake. since we didn't have to search very hard for bears, our driver brendan,

gave the dozen plus kids on board a turn driving the tundra buggy. the latest count of the western hudson bay population reportedly puts the polar bears at about 1000 strong, meaning the bears outnumber the humans that call churchill home. for polar bears, churchill is the ultimate spot to call home. ice melts the latest in the summer, and freezes the earliest in the fall. on average there's about 80 frost free days a year here.
