(robin)in our top story this morning. a father and his son drowned in goat rock beach in sonoma county. it happened shortly after six o'clock last night. coast guard officials say the two were playing in the water when a big wave swept the child into the ocean. the father went after the child... the two were rescued by a life guard ... the father died at the beach ... and the son died at the hospital. authorities have not yet released any information about the victims. (robin) take a look at this video out of san ramon. a car drove up to a neighborhood and shot flares at several homes. it happened saturday night between 10:00

and one a-m. police say the car shot the flare gun into five separate homes. the car is an older model nissan sentra. police have not released any information on the suspect. police did not say if there were any injuries or damage to the home. (robin)in our other big story ... san francisco said its final goodbye to its late mayor, ed lee, who passed away last week,.kron four's spencer blake was at the celebration of ed lee's life, and brings us this emotional report. outside city hall, the line to get into mayor ed lee's memorial service started hours early.(music nats)the speakers were a star-studded line-up of politicians at almost every level.professional athletes like barry bonds attended, too. mourners got to hear from lee's daughters, tania and brianna, who said they were deeply touched and moved. "thank you all so much for your thoughts and prayers, for the flowers you've sent, for the donations you've made in his name, and for the beautiful memorial outside of city hall and in front of our home."there was no shortage of anecdotes about mayor lee and his humility.when rabbi beth

(robin) some guests at the four seasons hotel in san francisco got an unexpected wake up call ... when gun fire went off in the hotel. the shooter in question ... is an off-duty richmond police officer ... who refused to leave his room. kron4's

camilla bernal has more on the story. dozens of san francisco police officers rushed to the four seasons hotel in just before 5am on sunday2:06:54 units that arrived made contact with a witness who stated that there was a male located in the building who was shooting a gunaccording to the richmond police department, man who was firing the shots is one of its own, who was off duty at the time sfpd says he fired multiple rounds2:09:55 several floors up there were a couple of floors that were involved in thispolice say he used a handgun and it took at least an hour of negotiations before he surrendered to authorities. 2:08;28 we've recovered a firearm from the incident and there was a shelter in place from the incident,he surrendered at around 6:30am and the shelter in place was lifted. no one was injured but the off duty officer was placed on administrative leave. in san francisco, camila bernal kron 4 news in the north bay... in the north

in the north bay... people gathered to raise awareness about gun violence... this on the five year anniversary of the sandy hook school schooting. several hundred people gathered at piper park in larkspur ... honoring the 20 children and six educators killed in the sandy hook school shooting. at yesterday's event ... several speakers rallied for the change of america's gun laws. (robin) 200 events like this one have been held across the country over the past two weeks. they are honoring the vicimts of the sandy hook shooting along with all victims of gun violence. (robin)in southern california ... crews have been battling the thomas fire for almost two weeks now. it has now scorced 270-thousand

acres... and is at 45-percent containment. the thomas fire is currently the third-largest wildfire in modern california history. two people have been killed ... the first-- a 70-year-old woman who died in a car crash while trying to evacuate. the other-- 32-year-old cory iverson-- a firefighter from san diego who died while battling the flames.alex biston spoke with those who paid tribute to iverson. a final salute to a fallen hero.asst. chief norman plott/santa paula fire department "it's difficult to lose a brother or sister firefighter."firefighters, first responders and citizens gathered over the 101 freeway in camarillo to say goodbye to cory iverson"when he drives by ill shed a tear, i can guarantee you that i get emotional seeing these guys here. this is their family" iverson died thursday fighting the thomas fire near fillmore he leaves behind a wife, daughter and unborn childsanta paula assistant chief, normal plott says iverson's service

police have arrested a man for allegedly committing vandalism around the city. officers received evidence that a 22-year old man spray painted the word "nobody" in multiple locations in napa. officer's served a search warrant at the suspects home and arrested him on suspicion of felony vandalism. police are continuing to investigate vandalism incidents believed to be related to the suspect. off.. while the heads of the children statues around her are removed.jane sanders/parishonerit's very sad that this kind of thing is happening today. it just seems like faith is not as strong as it used to be and to attack something that is so sacred to our church. a lot of people were very hurt by it. athe gross act of vandalism happened three weeks ago. and it's one of several attacks at st. bede's church.jane sanders/parishoneri think the third or four time it's happened. the first time they decapitated the blessed mother statue. we had her repaired and they came back and did it again.and in 2015, liquid that looks like blood was poured over other statues.marcia mahogany/parishonerit's generally pretty safe especially on the school campus it's more like a family atmosphere so yeah iw as really surprised.marcia mahogany/parishonerand people are very dedicated to their faith here so when something like this happens it hurts as all. package thefts. and now they are warning you to be prepared. the richmond police department says that many times theives will follow delivery trucks then steal the packages after they are dropped off. if you are expecting a package officers recommend that you request a signature for the package. you can also chose to allow a neighbor to sign for the package. they recommend letting friends and family know when packages will be arriving. surveillance video can be helpful in catching thieves but it doesn't always stop them. (robin)on the peninsula ... police are investigating a deadly hit and run in san bruno. it happened around 7 o'clock yesterday morning on skyline boulevard between college drive and sharp park road. according to police, evidence from the scene suggested the person was hit and killed by a vehicle. the road was temporarily closed during the investigation but has since reopened. there is no information on the victim or the car involved right now. (robin) in the north bay ... police are investigating a sexual assault on the santa rosa junior

college campus. officers say a woman student was walking along burbank circle friday afternoon when a man approached her. the person asked the student for a hug ... and when the woman agreed she says he groped her. the student ran away and called police who searched the area but could not find the man. (robin) the sonoma county sheriff's office is warning people about a phone scam. they say, a caller claims they have a warrant and will arrest the person if they don't pay a fine. the victim is told to purchase a prepaid debit card and give the card information to the caller so they can collect the money. this scam is targeting the elderly. something to look out for, the suspects use hidden numbers ... most calling from outside califronia and even outside the country. (robin)(boxes) demonstrators gathered in san francisco's union square saturday to protest the city's sanctuary city status. kron four's jeff pierce was there when counter protestors arrived -- along with a heavy police

presence. it is absolutely critical that you are here.the season of joy and love was interupted at union square in san francisco saturday when a group of right leaning protestors came to demonstrate against the town's status as a sanctuary city.no sanctuary city no sanctuary state we're going to fight the sanctuary state.they were met by a counter protest of such size that the san francisco police deemed it volatile enough to keep the two groups sperated.they're attacking san francisco they're demonizing san francisco as a sanctuary city. it soon evolved into a shouting match with each side accusing the other of facism. we are no facists usa.we have to stand up we have to drive these fascists off our streets. justice, justice for american citizens.we are all san franciscans and we all stand together.sanctuary cities allow enemies to come into this country to kill american citizens the politicians that allow sanctuary cities should be put in jail.we stand here because we believe in inclusion acceptance and safety.protect american citizens first, build the wall. no walls sanctuary cities for all.the recent court decision in the death of kate steinly did not escape the tuants traded by both sides.what about kate steinly that's all

(robin)in our other big story this morning ... the california democratic party's east bay director has resigned amid sexual misconduct allegations. craig cheslog resigned this past thursday. he is accused of a non- consensual encounter with an activist at a party function in november of last year. the communications director for the state democratic party released a statement saying they are ... committed to ensuring that our party is a safe environment for everyone, and we applaud the brave women

who are confronting the pervasive culture of sexism throughout our society. craig cheslog's attorney released a statement saying- we are confident that a full and fair exploration of this matter, undertaken in an appropriate, fact-governed venue, would exonerate mr. cheslog. we are prepared, if necessary, to put forward the facts of this matter in just such avenue. (robin) there is a marijuana warning going out for potential buyers on new year's day ... when recreational marijuana becomes legal. experts say buyers should be aware of contaminants such as pesticides and mold that could be present in marijuana sold january 1st. tests conducted on current marijuana in the state have found many samples tainted with chemicals and solvents. products harvested or manufactored this year won't be subject to regulations that take effect in 2018. these products were harvested under the state's current medical marijuana program that has very few regulations. two men are dead after seperate shootngs occured about a mile and a half apart in oakland. the first incident happened around nine saturday night on ritchie street. there ... the male victim died at the scene. then ... around 2:40 yesterday this morning ... another man was shot on 90th avenue. that victim also died at the scene. police have not made any arrests ... and officers are trying to determine if both shootings are connected. (robin) and in san mateo county. police are investigating a home burglary. it happened friday morning at a house on pullman road in hillsborough. there officers say the suspects made their way into the homes garage ... by forcing open a side door. the suspects were scared off by a home burglary alarm ... and were seen leaving the area in a white saturn with no rear license plate. (robin) santa clara police arrested two people on suspicion of firearms and drug possession. here is a look at the several shotguns, some loaded and some unloaded, police netted. police

also took, an imitation explosive device, thousands of rounds of ammunition, drug paraphernalia and brass knuckles. jonathan gillean was arrested for gun possession and a suppressor. patricia di-grandi was also arrested. police executed a search warrant at gillean's work in a commercial building on grant street. both suspects were booked into the santa clara county jail. (robin) playoffs hopes are over for the raiders ... after a tough loss against dallas. derek carr fumbled just inches from the goal line with 31 seconds left in the game. the refs ruled that a touchback... and that play sealed the raiders fate. dallas won this one 20 to 17. of their last five games.their next game is christmas day on the road against the philadelphia (robin)the 49ers are not seeing the playoffs either ... but it was all smiles in santa clara where the red and gold came away with another win. garoppolo made his first start at levi's stadium and he put up some big numbers against the titans.he threw for a career-high 381 yards. he's the first 49ers quarterback to win his first three starts since to 19-70 n- f-l merger. the 49ers won this one 25-to-23.

(robin) now to a story you'll only see on kron 4. a vallejo family's home is the go-to place for many people around the bay area looking to get into the holiday spirit. kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke the family about their reason for shining joy on their neighborhood. every year.. bob taylor and his family light up their home and invite friends and strangers to take it all in. a tradition that began 19 years ago.. when taylor's oldest daughter was killed in a plane crashbobby taylorshe loved christmas. i mean that was her favorite time of the year and she loved to decorate so when the first year she wasn't with us. my other two daughters came over and said come on dad let's decorate for deb..that first year we didn't have very much but each year it's grown and gotten bigger and brighter and i just tell everybody that i want it to be bright enough that she can see it from heaven taylor says the display takes there months. and includes a real life santa that comes out every night.erlinda pizarro they are all happy. they say it's awesome. it's amazing and you can see their face and sometimes they hug you, oh yeah, they hug youpeople come from all over the area come.. some with their kidsbrooke

around, looking around kind of confused."all airport operations were affected. mos/traveler"i was just getting something to eat at atlanta bread and all of a sudden we heard a boom!" a fire in a georgia power underground electrical facility damaged two substations serving the airport -- including the system that provides backup power.kasim reed/atlanta mayor "because of the intensity of the heat, it took approximately 1.5 hours to 2 hours to make sure that the fire was adequately contained." atlanta mayor kasim reed says security checks were done and there's no sign it was set deliberately.the power was restored shortly before midnight, eastern time.but more than 11-hundred flights in and out of atlanta were canceled sunday, according to tracking service flightaware. mos/traveler"now we're all just waiting to get out of here, it's been a complete nightmare."and hundreds of flights scheduled for monday are also affected.mos/traveler "i've got to make a connection in chicago but it looks like that might not happen." (robin) republican senator john mccain is expected to miss the g-o-p tax bill vote this week -- according to several sources. mccain was treated at a military hospital for a viral infection and is responding positively to ongoing treatment for brain cancer. a source close to mccain said he left the hospital "exhausted, but okay." mccain's daughter said he's returning home to arizona for the holidays. his absence is not expected to prevent the tax bill from getting passed this week.president trump said that if mccain's vote is needed he would be there to make it but he doesn't think that would be necessary. (robin)and president donald trump is set to deliver a speech today , outlining his national security strategy.he will give the remarks at the ronald reagan building this afternoon.the president is expected to lay out his "america first" policy.the l-a times reports, quoting national security advisor, h-r mcmaster ... who says the plan will focus on u-s military and

(robin) president donald trump denied that he is considering firing special counsel robert mueller. he was asked about this when he returned to the white house from camp david on sunday. the president did criticize the fact that mueller had gained access to thousands of emails sent and received by trump officials before the start of his administration. mueller is leading the investigation into allegations the president's campaign coordinated with russia. the president again stressed that there was "no collusion." a spokesman for mueller said the emails were obtained appropriately. (robin) a bakersfield woman says she's now being threatened... after putting a "black lives matter" sign in her yard. latoya johnson says it all started on saturday. she checked her mailbox and inside was an annonymous letter. the letter writer told her she didn't live in compton or watts... and her sign was making the neighborhood look

(robin) johnson says she's never had any issues with her neighbors. she filed a police report and she says she's hoping by speaking out this will never happen again. (robin@landing) san jose's "christmas in the park" and "downtown ice" have a bit more money this morning. and it's all thanks to google's 6th annual "santa run silicon valley." some runners took yesterday's 5-k seriously. others just used it to have a good time. but it was all for a good cause. along with raising money for "christmas in the park" and "downtown ice"... hundreds of childrens books were also collected for the charity "reading partners." for swimming after a man was attacked by a seal... san francisco maritime national historical park's aquatic park cove has been closed for swimming from decemebr 15th until monday, december 18, 2017. working in collaboration with city agencies (including the sfpd, sffd and sf department of emergency management) the park has interest of public safety, to restrict swimming in the cove to monitor and access the situation in light of two mammal bites. francisco police officers rushed to the four seasons hotel ... when a gun went off. and the shooter in question... an off-duty richmond police officer... who refused to leave his room. police say he used a handgun ... and it took at least an hour of negotiations before he surrendered to authorities. no one was injured during the incident ... but the off duty officer was placed on administrative leave. (darya) napa police have arrested a man for allegedly committing vandalism around the city. officers received evidence that a 22-year old man spray painted the word "nobody" in multiple locations in napa. officer's served a search warrant at the suspects home and arrested him on suspicion of felony police are continuing to investigate vandalism believed to be related to the suspect. (james) back the bay area... police are investigating a deadly hit and run in san bruno. it happened on skyline boulevard between college drive and sharp park road yesterday morning. according to police, evidence from the

(darya) (darya) the sonoma county sheriff's office is warning people about a phone scam. they say a caller claims they have a warrant and will arrest the person if they don't pay a fine. the victim is told to purchase a prepaid debit card and give the card information to the caller so they can collect the money. this scam is targeting the elderly. the suspects use hidden numbers... most calling from outside califronia and even outside the country. (darya)police are searching for the thieves they say robbed a jewelry store.the theft was pulled off by six women ... a man ... and a baby. you can them looking at the items in this store ... and they actually make a purchase. they bought a 125-dollar ring.
