(robin) breaking news from overnight out of the south bay. police say a security guard shot a man trying to rob a store. it happened at the walgreens on south first street in downtown san jose ... just before 8:30. the suspected thief was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries. the security guard is cooperating with the investigation. off-duty richmond police officer who was arrested after a standoff.45-year-old sergeant philip sanchez was taken into custody after opening fire inside the four seasons hotel in san francisco. the officer's attorney says sanchez was suffering a mental breakdown.police say about half a dozen gunshots rang out on the 17th floor.it took police over an hour to get sanchez to surrender.sanchez faces multiple charges ... and is on administrative leave. (robin) san bruno police are searching for a driver in a deadly hit and run crash. it happened early sunday morning ... on highway- 35 between college drive and sharp park road in san bruno. police released a picture of a possible suspect car. this is a photo of what that car would look like... investigators say ... the car would have damage to the front passenger side.. including damage to the bumper and passenger side mirror. (robin) a woman has been arrested accused of fatally stabbing a man in fremont. it happened just after 10 p-m

sunday night... on fremont boulevard. a witness said, the stabbing followed what appeared to be a domestic violence dispute. they also saw the woman drive off in a silver mercedes, and managed to give a partial description of the license plate to authorities. police located the vehicle and the woman was arrested on suspicion of murder. the woman's identity has not been released pending the ongoing investigation. (robin) in the east bay invstigators are looking into a suspicious string of fires. the latest fire happened at a flower shop... on a-street and west 15th street in antioch...the owner, whose business is in ruins ... spoke with kron four's spencer blake about who investigators think may have done it. (reporter looklive)this is the backside of paula's family florist...and the inside looks even worse.investigators say this fire was started intentionally...and it might have been done by a homeless person.(pkg)monday afternoon there were still footsteps in the foam that put out the flames at the florist shop.the fire happened before the sun

even came up.owner paula trotta got the phone call nobody wants."we came down here and we've lost everything."showing me the inside of her 62-year-old family business, trotta said she was devastated - not only for her financial loss, but because these types of fires aren't new in antioch."i know that there were four fires last night and i was told previously that they were trying to catch somebody doing it."in september, kron four showed you damage from some of the áeight fires that happened in just a two-day span.the fire marshal for contra costa fire protection district said those were all intentionally set,.trotta says investigators told her monday's fire...was set in this dumpster.rob strickland owns a mortuary that áwas about a block away from paula's family florist...that is until the same thing happened to him - twice!"they burned our building. they set a fire in the back and the fire went up the back wall and across the eaves and into the roof of the building."nobody got hurt in the flower shop fire, but the

(robin)we now know the cause of death for san francisco mayor ed lee.medical examiners confirmed that mayor ed lee died of a heart attack.the mayor passed away one week ago ... after collapsing at a safeway near his home.medical examiners say heart disease is the leading cause of death in the u-s.the former mayor's father died of a heart attack ... when ed lee was just 15 years old. history hasn't been released. symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain, stomach pain, shortness of breath, and sweating. (robin) developing this morning ... investigators say the amtrak train that derailed in washington state ... was going 50 miles over the speed limit. the train was making its first passenger run yesterday morning on a new rail line ... when it went off the tracks on a freeway overpass south of tacoma.the event data recorder showed the train was going 80 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone when it derailed.the accident has closed interstate five southbound indefinitely. at least three people on the train died.more than one- hundred people are being treated for injuries. (robin) back here in the bay area -- thousands of people ride amtrak trains everyday. many use it to commute back and forth to work... others use it to travel all across the country.while news that 3 people have died and dozens were injured in the derailement is troubling, no one we spoke with in emeryville seemed discouraged

(robin) san ramon police have arrested four teens for shooting a stolen flare gun at houses and cars in the city. officials say the kids shot at 7 different homes and cars, all within about two miles of each other. this san ramon resident asked us not to identify her-- but said the flare hit her window and woke her up in the middle of the night. and luckily her home surveillance video caught it all on camera... < "red lights outside of my windows just through the blinds and i opened my window and there was nobody out there. i thought that i might have been dreaming or something you know?">(robin) the streets targeted included yosemite avenue, estero drive, aptos way, and cree court. san ramon police confirmed that it was a random act but one that led the teens to juvenile hall. (robin) we have learned the names of the father and child

who drowned at goat rock beach in sonoma county. 31-year-old omar hernandez and his six-year-old son... axel medina died on sunday. they were playing in the water when a big wave swept the child into the ocean. the father went after the boy... but also got caught in the waves. helicopter crews spent hours recovering the victims' bodies as family members watched. unfortunately, the father died at the beach... and the son died at the hospital. a second son was able to make it back to the beach. (robin) we have learned aquatic park cove in san francisco will remain closed to swimmers through tomorrow. the closure comes after three swimmers were bitten by sea lions last week. (áááboxesááá)one bite was so severe, that first responders had to apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. according to park officials ... three sea lions have been spotted in the area following the attacks. park rangers say, the marine mammals are swimming near the aquatic park cove entrance. park officials

are urging swimmers to stay out of the water until the cove has been deemed safe. (robin) in the east bay... mediators continue to work with the city of oakland and the worker's union to figure out a contract both sides can live with. the city has long said it can not pay out more than what is fisically prudent to balance the books. city workers say cost of living expenses and working conditions are at the heart of their issue. oakland representatives say they are optimistic about the mediation... but there are still some big unresolved issues. union reprsentive says they are committed to the process ... and don't want to go back on strike again.

(robin)(áááboxesááá) the san francisco s-p-c-a ... has terminated its 'security robot' pilot program.the robot was being used to curb crime and vandalism associated with the numerous homeless encampments in the area. kron4's maureen kelly explains why they shut off the machines. to some....the egg like orb seemed cute...to others, onimous.the spca called it k-9 and at first used to patrol it's entire campus on 16th and alabama. but the city hit them with a cease and desist letter, after which the bot stuck to the parking lot. the 3 month pilot project was launched because the non profit said the car break ins, needles and scary encounters associated the numerous homeless encampments in their

area had gotten so bad that they were losing staff, and their volunteers couldn't even walk the dogs for adoption around the facitiy. but then k-9 because a crime victim.... someone pushed it over, and smeared bbq sauce on it's sensors and put a tarp over it....the spca says after news stories of the crime fighting robot went viral,they've received hundreds of messages inciting violence and vandalism to their facility, encouraging people to take retrobution. they've had two acts of vandalism here at their campus last week that they believe is related.those working or visiting the animal hospital and shelter say they don't understand the outrage. again i never saw the robot is a threat i thought improve security and it just reminded me of r2-d2 so i always thought it was cute to have i don't see why it would be considered a threatone client says she isn't sure the security bot is the way to go, but used to work her herself and says security is an issue. it was such a problem walking dogs here coming to your car at night, not only was it just in fear of someone breaking in to your car but you were harassed sometimes followed i remember someone approach me trying to ask if they could have my dog, so i think any security just to help people who work at the spca and any customers and clients coming here is necessary the spca acknowleges that the robot program backfired....saying they were trying to curb crime not disrupt homeless people...a population they

a string of suspicious fires broke out abut 1 a.m. sunday between some trees and shrubs and a sound wall along the i-680 off ramp to capitol avenue. this concerned resident lives on the other side of that sound wall. roy/lives near fire"...the flames were as high as the roof tops, we were worried the fire might blow into our neighborhood and burn our homes..."so far there have been least twenty such fires in the area, stretching from near tully road to the milpitas border, mostly in north san jose along 680 near berryessa and capitolavenue and near hostetter road. almost all are thought to have been intentionally set.

ranking public official is facing sexual misconduct allegations ... this time ... a federal appeals court judge. judge alex kozinski of the ninth circuit court made the announcement yesterday. a total of 15 women claimed kozinski made sexual comments or showed them pornography and in some cases kissed or groped them. most of the women were law clerks or student externs at the time of the alleged misconduct. two were a professor and a judge when they claimed to have been touched or groped. kozinski released a statement apologizing. (robin) happening now: police are looking for the men responsible for a robbery at a popular san francisco tourist spot. on saturday evening, a man was held up at knife point on twin peaks for his camera equipment. the victim was taking photographs when two men approached him from behind. the area has been the site of a number of other thefts ... including one that ended in a death.

( james ) another day of calm winds could help firefighters battling the thomas fire in southern california. the 271- thousand acre fire -- burning in santa barbara and ventura counties -- is now 50- percent contained. the fire has burned an area larger than new york city and boston combined. it's also destroyed more than one- thousand buildings -- at least 700 of them are homes. crews say before it's contained... the fire is likely to become the biggest in california since records started being kept in 1932. ( james ) rob lowe is thanking firefighters for their hard work... by cooking them dinner. he shared photos on instagram last night. the fire did come close to lowe's home in montecito. ( james ) four arrests have been made in san ramon... after homes and cars were hit with flare guns. many of

the attacks happened over the weekend. some were caught on surveillance video. police say the teens drove through san ramon neighborhoods . they hit seven homes and cars. the flare guns were stolen from the walmart in pleasanton. police were able to trackdown the car seen in the surveillance video... they found the spent flare gun shells in the vehicle.. and soon after they made the arrets.. investigators say even thought it was just a "flare gun" -- they're not toys. ( darya ) people living in the cannery place neighborhood in hayward say packages are being stolen off their porches and police aren't doing enough. some people in the neighborhood they've installed cameras to catch the thieves in action. one of the first robberies was caught on camera... in broad daylight. video shows a person walking up to a porch and taking a package. neighbors say their network of cameras has captured at least three thefts in a week. police say the are getting the footage and

3 month pilot project was launched because the non profit said the car break ins, needles and scary encounters associated the numerous homeless encampments in their area had gotten so bad that they were losing staff, and their volunteers couldn't even walk the dogs for adoption around the facitiy. but then k-9 because a crime victim.... someone pushed it over, and smeared bbq sauce on it's sensors and put a tarp over it....the spca says after news stories of the crime fighting robot went viral,they've received hundreds of messages inciting violence and vandalism to their facility, encouraging people to take retrobution. they've had two acts of vandalism here at their campus last week that they believe is related.those working or visiting the animal hospital and shelter say they don't understand the outrage. again i never saw the robot is a threat i thought improve security and it just reminded me of r2-d2 so i always thought it was cute to have i don't see why it would be considered a threatone client says she isn't sure the security bot is the way to go, but used to work her herself and says security is an issue.

brings the total to more than twenty all along interstate 680. and the c-h-p believes they are being set on purpose. the most recent fire happened sunday morning near the off ramp to capitol avenue. so fra there have been 20 fires in the area stretching from tully road to the milpitas border. most of the fires have been set near berryessa and capitol avenue and near hostetter road.... mostly in or near homeless camps. (james) the c-h-p says the fires also pose a threat to drivers. the c-h-p says it will be stepping up patrols in the area until the arsonist is caught. (darya) in the east bay... investigators are looking into a suspicious string of fires. the latest was at an antioch flower shop on "a" and "west 15th" streets. the owner of the shop spoke with kron four's spencer blake

(darya) another day of calm winds could help firefighters battling the thomas fire in southern california. the 271- thousand acre fire -- burning in santa barbara and ventura counties -- is now 50- percent contained. the fire has burned an area larger than new york city and boston combined. it's also destroyed more than one- thousand buildings -- at least 700 of them are homes. crews say before it's contained... the fire is likely to become the biggest in california since records started being kept in 1932. (darya) rob lowe is thanking firefighters for their hard work... by cooking them dinner. he shared photos on instagram last night. the fire did come close to lowe's home in montecito. ( james ) four arrests have been made in san ramon...

after homes and cars were hit with flare guns. many of the attacks happened over the weekend. some were caught on surveillance video. police say the teens drove through san ramon neighborhoods . they hit seven homes and cars. the flare guns were stolen from the walmart in pleasanton. police were able to trackdown the car seen in the surveillance video... they found the spent flare gun shells in the vehicle.. and soon after they made the arrets.. investigators say even thought it was just a "flare gun" -- they're not toys. (james) happening now: a robbery warning in a popular san francisco tourist spot. on saturday evening, a man was held up at knife point on twin peaks for his camera equipment. the victim was taking photographs when two men approached him from behind. the area has been the site of a number of other thefts, including one that ended in a death. the criminals in this latest incident are still at large. sutter health volunteer celebrated a big birthday on monday... turning 100- years-old. loe tolson has been volunteering at the sutter health medical center for more than 22 years. and is still at it. tolson's husband died in 19-95. she says she was so impressed by the care he got,
