(grant) to the santa cruz mountains now where last winter's merciless storms took a heavy toll on mountain roads. (vicki) kron four's rob fladeboe joins us now with a live update on how work is nearing completion on a mega landslide that has had highway 35 shut down for almost a year. rob? (rob live) mountain residents who would normally commute north on highway 35 or take highway 9 have been using black road and highway 17 here in los gatos to get to san jose and points north. but not much longer. i was there a couple days after the road washed out back in february and to see it now, almost while again, was something else. let's take a look. you are looking at what amounts to the reconstruction of a mountainside. for the past ten months, crews have been quite literally reinventing the wheel in replacing the 200 feet of highway 35 that washed out ten

months ago after days and days of relentless rain. there has never been a project like it.bob haus/caltrans"....this project was unique in that it's called design and build, we designed it as we built it, so the guys were out here building this thing when the ink was still drying on the plans...."i visited the job site back in april as crews were cutting a new road bed across a 40 foot crater. they had to take out more than a hundred trees and move some 20,000 yards or 2,000 truck loads of rock, dirt and debris. rob fladeboe/santa cruz mtns "....one of the challenges for crews is the fact that the soil here is mostly made up of sandstone, which turns to soup when it rains...."the solution to that problem is called cellular concrete. three times lighter and ten times stronger than sandstone. we're talking miles of rebar and pylons sunk 60 feet into themountain side. hundreds of manhours. $30 million dollars worth of time and materialsbon haus/caltrans "...when you do it like that it costs more but it pays off in the long run because the longer the road is closed it's costing commuters and everybody else time and money..."caltrans provided this time-lapse record of a project that is essentially made up of three huge walls. one to support the new roadbed, one to support the hillside below the road and a third to support the hillside

(grant) new tonight at 5... an alarming situation on the pennisula as a teacher allegedly engaged in sexual misconduct with a student. (vicki) as kron four's terisa estacio reports, there's growing concern there could be more than one victim in this case. the teacher arrested works here at south san francisco high school - police have identified her as noelia linares. she reportedly works as a paraprofessional, a specialized aide who worked in in the bilingual department at the high school. south san

francisco police revealed they started investigating about a week agao - when they learned of possible inappropriate behavior between a teacher and students. right now, one 17 year old victim has been identified kron four received this statement this from the school district - quote" we were recently notified by the south san francsico police department about the arrest of one of our employees on suspicion of sexual misconduct with one or more students at south san francisco high school. we are deeply concerned about the allegations the district continued with saying the teacher has been placed on administrative leave. they also say they are working with the police department and are still learning about the particiulars about the case some students took me off camera, that they saw text messages between the teacher lianres and a student.. that was sexual in naturecalls and a statement when out to parents about the accusations encouraging parents to use this situation as quote "an opportunity to discuss with your child the importance of maintining open communication especially if somethinginapp ropriate or uncomfortable has happened at or related to school, end quote.rueben, parent. francisco)south san francisco police tell me they are still working on this case and they are concerned there are more victims out there they are waiting to see before handing the case over to the district attorney for charges. in south san francisco, te kron four news (grant) a big day in court for a former millbrae middle school teacher... who pleaded no contest to felony lewd acts with a minor. a san mateo county jury has sentenced heather butts... to 120 days in prison. the 41-year-old former teacher...is also sentenced to three years probation...and will be required to register as a sex

"(it) lines the pockets of millionaires and billionaires and wealthy corporations and yes, it makes it easier for corporations to shift jobs overseas."the core of the bill is a massive, permanent cut in corporate taxes, from 35 to 21 percent, in addition, the bill exempts most of their overseas profits from taxation.this will be a huge benefit to apple, google and other silicon valley companies with hundreds of billions of dollars in offshore accounts.less beneficial to californians will be changes to what you can itemize on your taxes..the bottom line is that most californians would see their tax bill go down by 580 dollars in 2019.the top one percent will save nearly 28=thousand.but in 2027, many of the tax breaks expire.the bottom 60 percent will pay an average of 230 dollars more. the top one percent of californians would still be getting a 14=thousand dollar break. hurling passenger cars off an overpass... and onto the highway below. all of the deaths were contained to the train, which was carrying 86 people on its first journey along a new service route. (grant) at least 12 tourists are killed in a bus accident in mexico, and 18 others are injured today. the bus was traveling on a highway in mayan region...south of cancun...a lot of tourists travel the highway. officials for royal caribbean cruise line say 27 people on the bus were

guests from two of their ships. the tour bus was carrying 31 tourists from the united states, brazil and sweden. authorities arrived at the scene -- about three hours away from playa del carmen -- to rescue people who were trapped in the vehicle. the cause of the crash has not yet been determined. a federal lawsuit has now been filed in the police shooting of an unarmed man in san francisco earlier this month...(vicki) keita o'neil was shot and killed by a rookie officer december first - as he ran from a stolen van. catherine heenan is here with the details.. (catherine) the mother of the man who died has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit......alleging that he was wrongfully shot and killed...this is video released by police. officers had been responding to reports of a robbery and carjacking - and began following a california state lottery van. the lawsuit claims that keita

o'neill had jumped from the slow-moving van and was running away when an officer needlessly fired his gun. o'neil was hit in the head and died. the officer who fired had graduated from the police academy only 4 days earlier. the attorney for the o'neil family calls the incident 'shocking' - and says it was premeditated murder. john burris/family attorney -- there was nothing that was going on that would justify the use of deadly force. it is most shooting occurred from inside the car. the officers were both in a position of safety. attorney john burris says the 42-year-old victim was an only son - who had been a caretaker for his bedridden mother. the lawsuit was filed today in federal court in san francisco. grant and vicki? at a san jose walgreens it happeend around 8:30 last night... at the walgreens store on five south first street. once at the scene...officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. he was rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries...where he died today. while most security guards don't have guns...police say the security guard last night was licensed to carry one. officers are currently investigating what prompted that guard... to open fire. (vicki) we are learning new information tonight about the san francisco police officer who shot himself during a traffic stop. he has been identified as 49- year-old antonio cacatian. police say he was a nine- year veteran of the force. the shooting happened yesterday afternoon at the hill top mall near the j-c penney store. when officers approached cacatian's car they heard a gunshot. officers could not see exactly what happened inside of the car because the windows were heavily tinted. we are also learning tonight that cacatian was the center of an

investigation involving several jurisdictions-- but the details of the investigation have not yet been released. (vicki) happening now... police are looking for the driver involved in a hit and run in the east bay. it happened in berkeley last night on the 31-hundred block of san pablo avenue. police say a car hit a pedestrian and then took off. the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. right now police do not have a description of the suspect vehicle. (grant) firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in concord. one person was killed in that fire. kron 4's lydia pantazes has the details. we know that one person has that one we know we know that one person has died in this house fire. we do not know what started the fire. the cause is still under investigation.

(grant) new tonight at 5... los angeles county authorities say two parents were arrested on suspicion of trying to sell their sons for drugs. deputies responded to the residence following reports of possible child abuse. they determined that the parents attempted to exchange the two boys for money or drugs. they could face charges including felony child endangerment, child neglect, and being under the influence of a controlled substance. the children are now in custody of the county's department of children and family services. (grant) former "glee" star mark salling has pleaded guilty to possessing child

pornography. salling made his plea monday at a los angeles courthouse, two months after he reportedly struck a deal with authorities. federal investigators say they found more than 25-thousand child porn images and 600 videos on salling's computers and thumb drives. salling has reportedly agreed to be sentenced to a combined eleven years in prison, and will be under supervised release for another 20 years. he will be sentenced in march. (vicki) for your health... if you've been holding back on getting a flu shot because of an allergy....now's your chance.according to a new report...people with egg allergies can now get a traditional flu shot.most flu vaccines are manufactured using chicken eggs making those with allergies look for egg-free options.in the new paper published...the flu shot was found to be safe for those with egg allergies.researchers say regardless of severity...people can receive the vaccine without special precautions. (vicki) cal-trans is dedicating millions of dollars to fight freeway shootings in the bay area. and the city of pittsburg has just voted to join that fight. the pittsburg city council voted 5-0 in favor of their police department hosting a large scale security system across contra costa county freeways. there have been more than 100 shootings on bay area highways in the past two years. cal-trans is now investing three-point-five million dollars to add more security tools to try to deter the shootings. people we spoke with say they don't mind the extra security as long as it keeps them safe. network will be installed along highways four and 80. shot spotters, wireless cameras and microphones along with plate readers will be installed across both freeways. (vicki) teachers in the south bay are facing several sexual abuse accusations tonight... and students say their catholic school is not handing the problem. we'll have the details right after the break.

tonight at 5:30... a number of sexual assault accusations are being made against teachers and staff at presentation high school in san jose. the victims and their attorneys claim the problem stems from the way that this catholic school handles these accusations. (grant) kron 4's camila bernal explains what the victims are hoping the school will do to address the issue. former students who attended presentation high school parents and their attorneys are calling on the administration to apologize for alleged sexual misconduct on campus and change way the school deals with the problem. dina leonis claims that in 2014, the water polo coach sexually abused her daughter when she was a freshman the catholic school. leonis says she reported the alleged abuse to the school administration but they did not report it to police. 15:35 if they had

reported it, it would have been stopped but because they didn't it went onleonis say the sexual abuse continued for months.once she learned about it, she said she met with the principal and reported the incident to police herself. 13:16 this failure led directly to multiple sexual assaults being committed upon my daughter causing her to suffer extreme emotional damage which continues 4 years later until this present time the attorneys representing leonis said that for the past 8 weeks, they have been investigating sexual assault accusations at the high school, claiming to have found cases that involve 8 teachers and as many as 17 victims 18:40 and those incidences as far as we know have not been reported to the police. the lawyers also say nothing has been reported to child protective services. the families and attorneys want to changed how presentation high school deals with such accusations. 18:20 there's no lawsuit at this point what we want from the school is to acknowledge what has gone on and to remedy the situation presentation high school administrators would not talk to us on camera.. but did issue this statement: all reports of sexual harassment that have come to presentation high school have been handled properly by the school administration. adding that some of the other claims made today, they are hearing for the first time."camila tag:the school also said that the safety and well-being of their

students is a priority.they said all of its employees receive training and beginning in 2018, they will create a task force to review the current policies and procedures.but the alleged victims say and apology would be a start. in san jose, camila bernal kron 4 news (vicki) police are looking for more victims after a man was arrested for indecent exposure in mountain view. officials responded last week to the area of stevens creek trail to a report of a man exposing himself to someone.

30-year old jesus santos bastidas was quickly found nearby and was arrested. police say he matched the description of a suspect in a case from earlier in the month--- where a victim said she was sexually battered by a suspect who exposed himself to her. police are concerned that there are more victims in the case and are asking anyone with information to call the mountain view police department. (grant) pg and e... says temporary overhead power lines will be restored by friday...to the fire-ravaged coffey park neighborhood in santa rosa. pg and e crews have installed 226 poles ...and 15 transformers in the coffey park neighborhood. the west side of coffey park will be energized this evening...and the east side will have power by friday. besides lighting up the streets... the electricity will also help property owners rebuild. some one thousand homes were lost during the tubbs fire back in october.

(vicki) crews on the front lines of the wildfires in southern californiaare trying to take advantage of calmer winds... (grant) catherine heenan is here with the latest on the huge 'thomas' fire.. (catherine) the thomas fire is in santa barbara county.......it's still the biggest of the southern california wildfires. it's now about 50% contained...and has burned more than 270-thousand acres. today crews were setting controlled burns on the fire's northern edge and building containment lines. they're worried about the fact that a return to high winds is expected tomorrow. they're clearing dry brush - and hoping to leave nothing much to burn when the windy conditions kick in again. one woman in santa barbara county got together with a friend who's a retired fire engineer.....and built an elaborate system that successfully saved her home. lynn kirst, saved her home from fire: we put in this enormous rain birds to really saturate this place and to top it off everyday which raised the humidity level to such an extreme. we also have a 5- thousand gallon back-up water

(grant) a famous youtube star is bringing new life to an abandoned mall. (vicki) casey neistat has more than eight million subscribers on youtube... he filmed his holiday video inside a mall in milwaukee and transformed it into a winter wonderland for local children. rikki mitchell reports. it's the first time we've seen inside the mall in more than a decade. the empty food court, broken glass and boarded up doors are just some of the sights inside the mall now. but for one special day, the mall's atrium became almost unrecognizable. "all i could see was all of my childhood fantasies manifesting,"for his christmas video this year, he wanted to focus on giving back to the community. but he and his partners at samsung needed somewhere empty and large. "it just turns out that milwaukee happens to have a fantastic, huge, empty shopping mall," they welcomed 100 children from the boys and girls club of greater milwaukee and taught them how to become their own youtube creators using samsung phones. "consider this a set to demonstrate what you can do with a phone," leys actually grew up in sheboygan and remembers shopping at northridge mall as a kid. he, neistat and more than a dozen other youtube stars visited

an amtrak train derailed monday south of seattle.... killing three people. but one focus tonight -- the speed at which it was travelling. catherine heenan is here with the latest.. (catherine) one of the biggest revelations today.....that train was going 50 miles over the speed limit when it derailed... investigators say the train's data recorder shows it was traveling at 80 miles an hour ---- in a 30 mile an hour zone... crews today were removing the train cars from a railway overpass in washington state....and lifting some of the 13 cars that jumped the tracks... three deaths are confirmed. dozens were injured. the amtrak train when flying off the overpass above interstate 5 during its inaugural run along a new bypass route. we also learned today that critical safety technology designed to automatically slow or stop trains going too fast -- was not working on that section of track.

(steve) as kron four's terisa estacio reports, the concern is there could be more than one victim in this case spokesperson here at the south san francisco police department says they first started looking into this case a week ago, when they heard there could be inappropriate behavior between a teacher and a student. and now police have made an arrest based on their investigation the teacher identified - police have identified her as noelia (no el lia le an ares) linares. she reportedly works as a paraprofessional, a specialized aide who worked in in the bilingual department at the high school. south san francisco police revealed they started investigating about a week agao - when they learned of possible inappropriate behavior between a teacher and students. right now, one 17 year old victim has been identified kron four received this statement this from the school district - quote" we were recently notified by the south san francsico police department about the arrest of one of our employees on suspicion of sexual misconduct with one or more students at south san francisco high school. we are

(steve ) in the east bay. police are looking for the driver involved in a hit-and-run. it happened in berkeley last night near the corner of san pablo avenue and 67th street. police say a car hit a pedestrian and then took off. the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. right now police do not have a description of the suspect's car. (pam) a man was arrested for indecent exposure in mountain view... and now police are looking for more victims. officials responded to the area of stevens creek trail ... to a report of a man exposing himself to someone last week. 30-year old jesus santos bastidas .. was quickly found nearby and was arrested. police say, he matched the description of a suspect in a case from earlier in the month --- where a victim said, she was sexually battered by a suspect who exposed himself to her. police are concerned that there are other victims .. and are asking anyone with information to call the mountain view police department.
