dollar tax cut has passed the house and the senate. this is the first major overhaul of u-s tax laws in more than 30-years. the tax bill will cause an initial infusion of cash for nearly every taxpayer next year... because taxes will go down. but over the next several years, those tax cuts will gradually fade and morph into tax hikes for the majority of the middle class. (grant) the measure now heads to president trump's desk for his signature. and as the republicans celebrate their victory... they are now facing a deadline to fund the federal
5:09 pm
government... or it will shut down. that deadline is on friday. democrats are pressing for a two- or three-week temporary spending bill that pushes a number of unresolved issues into the new year. (vicki ) the new tax rules will have a significant impact on california taxpayers who itemize their deductions.if you are in that group, there are some steps you can take in the next ten days to minimize impact.(grant)here's catherine heenan to tell us about them. catherine? (catherine) we've put together a list of five steps to consider taking before the end of the year.each of them could affect how much you'll have to pay on april fifteenth. the first two steps apply to homeowners.number one is pay your property tax early.those tax bills usually go out in the fall, with the first payment due in december and the second in april.if your total is more than 10=thousand dollars ... and for most californians, it is ... it makes sense to make both payments this year and claim the full amount.a 10=thousand dollar limit goes into effect next year.and you might want
5:10 pm
to make your january mortgage payment before the end of the year.that way you get to deduct it, even if next year you decide not to itemize your deductions.rewind sfxokay let's rewind here to a basic question: should you itemize or take the standard deduction instead?the tax overhaul will nearly double the standard deductions, to 12=thousand= dollars for individuals, and 24=thousand=dollars for couples.that's expected to dramatically increase the number of filers who stop itemizing.if you think you might be one of them, consider making next year's charitable donations now ... you won't be deducting them next year. deductions for home offices and other unreimbursed business expenses are disappearing ... so you might want to renew your membership in any professional organizations.if you're self- employed, you might want to hold off on sending invoices so the payments come in 2018. that's because the tax brackets are shifting, and next year's income willl likely be taxed at a lower rate.
5:11 pm
(catherine) many factors determine just how much less you'll pay ... and whether you should itemize or not.these tips are just guidelines. you should check with a tax advisor about your personal situation.vicki, grant?
