(vicki) yeah, the air quality management district says that dry calm weather has let pollution collect in our skies... but relief could be on the way. kron 4's charles clifford is live for us tonight in san francisco with details. charles. . . well, we have seen winter spare the air alerts over the past few days including christmas and today meaning that it's illegal to burning wood fires, but it looks like conditions are about to improve.you may have noticed a brown haze hanging in the sky over the past few days. the poor air quality is the result

of multiple factors. tom flannigan is with the bay area air quality management district.sotwe are experiencing one of those long spells of dry, calm weather. what that means is that air pollution can just build up in our atmosphere from activities like driving around to burning wood. that accumulates in the air and makes it unhealthy to breathe.flannigan also says the smoke is not coming from wildfires burning in southern california.sotwe've had northerly winds and getting air from the north rather than the south so that has helped clear those impacts from smoke from the fires.but the good news is that the air district expects the skies to clear over the coming days. at the moment, the air remains unhealthy across much of the north bay and the santa clara valley and moderate across the east bay, the peninsula, and along the coast.but wednesday through at least saturday, conditions should improve with all areas seeing moderate air quality. as a result, there will be no spare the air alert for at least wednesday and wood burning will once again be allowed. that being said, the air district hopes that people will refrain from lighting up their fire places sotwe know that wood burning contributes to air pollution and it lies low in our atmosphere. all of us are susceptible to breathing it and having impacts from it. so we ask people to look for alternatives to it other than burning wood.more good news, the national weather service

francisco... police arrested two men... suspected of having child pornography. the first suspect is identified as 66-year-old san francisco resident michael connell. police say he is a licensed attorney and practiced law out of his home. they say connell was uploading and trading graphic child porn... through a chat messenger on his laptop. he was arrested last thursday after police searched his home and say they found those images. the second suspect arrested is 41- year-old san francisco resident gilbert francisco. earlier this month... police searched francisco's home and say they found thousands of child porn videos and pictures on his computer. he has been booked into the san francisco county jail. (grant) in the east bay... two laptop thieves that targeted a starbucks have been arrested. officers conducting a surveillance operation in el cerrito say they witnessed the crime. after a vehicle pursuit and foot chase the two suspects were arrested and taken to

jail. the laptop was returned to the elderly victim.. (grant) new tonight at 5... san francisco is one of three cities... suing the defense department... over alleged gun-check system failures. the federal lawsuit says many service members who are disqualified from gun ownership... were ánot reported to the national background check system. new york city and philadelphia are the other cities suing. the suit argues that the defense department failed to report disqualifying records for at least two decades. the cities say this allowed a former air force member to buy a high-powered rifle and shoot and kill 26 people in a texas church in november. local law enforcement officials rely on the f-b-i's database to conduct background checks on gun permit applications and to monitor purchases. pentagon officials say the department is continuing to work with the u.s. military leaders to refine their policies.

infused tacos. industry analysts predict that edibles from the recreational marijuana market will top 100-million dollars in sales next year. reports is out with a new warning on how crooks can scam money from those cards. the scam can be as simple as someone taking the card from the shelf. from there they simply write down the numbers and scratch off the strip on the back to get the security codes. then, using replacement strips, the hacker covers the codes and leaves the store. once you buy the altered card and load money onto it, the thief gets gets an alert. experts recommend protecting yourself by buying directly from the retailer online. and if you do buy a gift card in person from a store, try and get one that is kept behind the register. if you are the victim of a scam, it may help to call the retailer who issued the card. they may help identify the fraud and refund your money. they were rammed into sunday night. (vicki) in the north bay... a fire broke out at a santa rose home this morning... destroying part of

the home and a shed. it happened around 11:45 on boyd street near barham avenue. fire officials received a call about the fire... saying it was spreading to another home. the caller also voiced concerns that there may be a person trapped inside the home. crews quickly put out the fire... luckily no one was inside the home. fire officials say a neighbor saw the home on fire and quickly escorted the 81-year-old home owner out. fire officials believe the fire was accidental... but it remains under investigation. (grant) in the east bay... oakland police say a man killed in shooting was a 30-year old berkeley resident. it happened saturday just before 10-thirty p-m on west grand avenue and brush street in oakland. the man was found with gun shot wounds and was taken to the hospital. however, he later died from his injuries. his name has not been released pending the notification of his family. police have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects in the case. (vicki) a 19-year-old man is in custody after shooting a gun into a home earlier this

month. officers stopped a car on bridgehead road on friday...and identified the driver as terrance anthony adair. adair was wanted for allegedly firing a gun into a martinez home on the 100 block of berrellesa street. he was arrested and booked at the martinez detention facility. adair was also carrying a loaded gun at the time of his arrest. (grant) in san francisco... two men are under arrest for possession of child pornography. the first suspect is identified as 66- year-old san francisco resident michael connell. police say he is a licensed attorney and practiced law out of his home. they say connell was uploading and trading graphic child pornography through a chat messenger on his laptop. he was arrested last thursday after police searched his home and found those pornographic images. the second suspect arrested is identified as 41-year-old san francisco resident gilbert francisco. earlier this month... police searched francisco's home and found thousands of child porn

videos and pictures on his computer. he has been booked into the san francisco county jail. (grant) well, today was another spare the air day with air quality in many parts of the bay area being deemed unhealthy. (vicki) the air quality management district says that dry calm weather has let pollution collect in our skies but relief could be on the way. kron 4's charles clifford has details. well, we have seen winter spare the air alerts over the past few days including christmas and today meaning that it's illegal to burning wood fires, but it looks like conditions are about to improve."we are experiencing one of those long spells of dry, calm weather." you may have noticed a brown haze hanging in the sky over the past few days. the poor air quality is the result of multiple factors. tom flannigan is with the bay area air quality management district. "what that means is

two other cities are suing the defense department over gun- check system failures. (grant) according to the federal lawsuit... many service members who are disqualified from gun ownership were not reported to the national background check system. new york city and philadelphia are involved in the lawsuit that was filed today. the cities argue that the defense department failed to report

disqualifying records for at least two decades. they say this lead to a former air force member to buy a high- powered rifle and shoot and kill 26 people in a texas church in november. local law enforcement officials rely on the f-b-i's database to conduct background checks on gun permit applications and to monitor purchases. pentagon officials say the department is continuing to work with the u.s. military leaders to refine their policies. (vicki) in repsonse to recent shootings... california is adopting more agressive gun control laws. beginning january first ... criminals must give up their guns when they are convicted of a serious crime. gun dealers will need to get a certificate of eligibility from the department of justice ... to verify they passed background check. and online ammunition purchases will be shipped to a licensed vendor for transactions ... meaning they will no longer ship to a buyers home. the new laws are provisions from proposition 63 ... which was passed by voters last year. (vicki) after 500 years -- the vatican discovered them by chance during a restoration. experts believe the oil paintings are raphael's last works. he began to work on a room at the vatican before his death that had

never been found until now. "it's an amazing feeling, knowing these were probably the last things he painted, you almost feel the real presence of the maestro" the vatican restorer believes that it's a genuine rafael by the confidence of the brush work and the unusual shades of color. the head of the vatican museums says restoring the art in the entire room will take them until at least the year 2022.
