in our top story this morning ...its been a somber week for chp officers ... who are mourning the death of one of their own.33-year-old andrew camilleri lost his life while trying to protect others on christmas eve.yesterday his body was returned back to his hometown of tracy.officer camilleri leaves behind a wife and three young kids. he was killed by a suspected drunk driver while on patrol on interstate 880 in hayward. the 22-year-old suspect remains hospitalized -- and has not yet been publicly identified. today kron4's spencer blake was in tracy - talked to people who knew the fallen officer. (reporter)"tuesday afternoon that procession of chp and other law enforcement vehicles had sirens blaring as they accompanied the body of fallen chp officer andrew camilleri." (nats of sirens)despite the loud wailing, this somber line of cars had a reverence about it.people in tracy came to join officers, firefighters, and a ladder truck salute in

saying goodbye to camilleri, who died in the early hours of christmas day.he and his partner were in their patrol vehicle on i-880 when c-h-p says a 22-year-old man who had been drinking and using marijuana, slammed into them, killing camilleri and severely injuring his partner.the congregation at mission city church where the camilleris attend in tracy ..is still processing the devastating news."andrew was a man of faith. he loved jesus, and so we have a hope to know that as hard as it is to say goodbye, and to deal with the finality of losing somebody that you love, we know that we'll get to see him again."the rookie officer leaves behind a wife and three kids.a friend of the family, who is also one of their pastors, says andrew went 'all in' on things he was passionate about, and had a goal to make a difference. "andrew lived his life in a way that he wanted to make an impact on others. and i believe that's why he stepped into this call as a chp officer."he had just made the career change from pest control to law enforcement, within the past couple years. all the while, andrew played bass with his worship team, and was busy with the ministry and community outreach all the

time."literally people asking, 'is there anything that we can do?' and i know that people are really wanting, have a sincere desire to do something for the family."there is a fund set up at tracy mission dot org that will go towards the camilleri family."i think sometimes the greatest tragedy is wasted life. he didn't waste his. he made his life count." tag"so far there have been no funeral plans for fallen officer andrew camilleri that have been made public. in tracy. spencer blake kron four news." a memorial fund has been set up for officer camilleri's family. we have a link where you can donate posted on kron-4-dot-com. d-u-i arrests during the christmas holiday were up across the state. c-h-p was involved in what it calls a maximum enforcement period ... where they mostly cracked

down on drivers who are under the influence. kron4's j-r stone has more. major concern across the state of california when it comes to dui's. the number of people arrested for dui over the christmas weekend, a maximum enforcement weekend, was up. not by one or two but by almost 300 additional arrests. across the state 917 people were arrested from friday night to monday night for dui. last year 621 people were brought to jail during that time. in the bay area's 9 counties officers tell kron 4 that 144 people were arrested. the chp officer is the only person to have been killed in a dui related crash in the area but he is one of 27 who lost their lives across the state over the christmas weekend. and officers in the area aren't letting their guard down. contra costa county announced that a dui checkpoint will be setup somewhere in the county on thursday night. then friday

night is the start to another heavy enforcement time over the new year's eve weekend. bottom lineif you're drinking take precautions and don't drive. (áááboxesááá) a scare in the south bay...after a van crashes into a home. take a look at these photos you can see a van... lodged into the front of this house. it happened just after six o'clock last night ... in the area of los padres and bohannon in santa clara. fortunately no one was home ... however two people near the home ... experienced minor injuries. in the east bay ... police are looking for a suspect ... who robbed two mail trucks in antioch. these are pictures of the suspect and his car. the incidents occurred christmas day and yesterday in broad daylight. if you recognize the car ... or the suspect...the antioch police department would like to hear from you.

another big story ... residents of a san francisco neighborhood are on edge. this after finding out, a man they've known for years has been arrested ... accused of possessing child pornography. kron 4's ali reid has the details. neighbors i spoke to were in absolute shock to hear that the lawyer they've known for years, is being accused of having child porn.after a 4 month investigation, police arrested michael connell at his 23rd avenue home last thursday. wowthe 66 year old is accused of uploading and trading graphic child pornography through a chat messenger application. the sfpd's internet crimes against children unit served a search warrant, and investigators found connell's laptop, where videos and pictures of child porn were being stored.i had no ideaa graduate of u-c berkeley, and u-sf school of law, connell practiced out of his home for years. charged with possession and distribution of child porn, connell has since bailed out of jail. neighbors are holding their children a bit closer tonight, after hearing about

their neighbor.i have a kid. 13 years old san francisco police also announced the arrest of 41- year-old gilbert francisco on child porn charges. earlier this month... police say they searched his home and found thousands of child porn videos and pictures on his computer. happening now. authorities are awating necropsy results... to determine what killed a whale...that washed ashore along the marin county coastline. the dead whale was spotted on christmas eve... at point reyes national seashore. a team from the california academy of sciences examined the whale on christmas day... they determined the mammal to be a male humback around 30 feet long. a larger team was back at the seashore yesterday to conduct a necropsy ... to determine the exact cause of death. but we're still awaiting results. did you feel it?last night ... two small earthquakes shook santa clara county.this is a

map from the the u-s geological survey.the first quake struck around 7:20 p-m ... about 5.6 miles from san martin ... and 7.5 miles from morgan hill. it was a 3.1 magnitude quake.then at around 10:30 last night ... a 3.8 magnitude quake hit about 5 miles from san jose's alum rock neighborhood.kron 4 viewers have messaged us ... saying it felt like a quick jolt.no injuries or damage has been reported.it was felt as far as the peninsula. in the north bay... fire breaks out at a santa rose home... causing 150- thousand dollars worth of damage. it happened around 11:45 yesterday morning on boyd street near barham avenue. crews quickly put out the fire. luckily... no one was inside. fire crews say a neighbor saw the home on fire and quickly escorted the 81-year-old homeowner out. crews believe the fire was

management district says that dry calm weather has let pollution collect in our skies ... but as kron four's charles clifford reports ... relief could be on the way. well, we have seen winter spare the air alerts over the past few days including christmas and today meaning that it's illegal to burning wood fires, but it looks like conditions are about to improve."we are experiencing one of those long spells of dry, calm weather." you may have noticed a brown haze hanging in the sky over the past few days. the poor air quality is the result of multiple factors. tom flannigan is with the bay area air quality management district. "what that means is that air pollution can just build up in our atmosphere from activities like driving around to burning wood."but the good news is that the air district expects the skies to clear over the coming days. at the moment, the air remains unhealthy across much of the

north bay and the santa clara valley and moderate across the east bay, the peninsula, and along the coast. but wednesday through at least saturday, conditions should improve with all areas seeing moderate air quality. as a result, there will be no spare the air alert for at least wednesday and wood burning will once again be allowed. that being said, the air district hopes that people will refrain from lighting up their fire places "we know that wood burning contributes to air pollution and it lies low in our atmosphere. all of us are susceptible to breathing it and having impacts from it. so we ask people to look for alternatives to it other than burning wood."finally, the national weather service is predicting that rain is possible across much of the bay area starting this coming weekend. that should help improve air quality.in san francisco, charles clifford kron 4 news. another big another big story this morning ...a san francisco theft victim is fighting back. she's says shes had 50 packages stolen in the past three months and its only gotten worse around the holidays.so she decided to

leave a surprise for the theives that's now gone viral. kron 4's ella sogomonian has the story. sot: cameo wood, mail theft victim// " if they steal it they deserve it!"cameo wood says she and 15 others on her noe valley block in san francisco have been targeted by mail thieves she caught on surveillence cameras in the act.sot: cameo wood, mail theft victim// "and i'd get a little notification saying delivered i'd run downstairs and be like, oh where's the package? and it was gone. i was checking my video and i would see random people stopping in front of my house grabbing the packages and running away."wood says it's picked up in the last three months with six stolen in less than 24 hours between christmas eve and christmas day. frustrated, she took matters into her litter scoop and left a special gift courtesy of her cat koo koo. sot: cameo wood, mail theft victim// "so i put 6 of them and they were all stolen all between christmas eve and christmas day."the thefts happened all while she was at home.wood says police couldn't' do much about it other than suggest she have her mail sent elsewhere or

picked up from the post office. in the east bay...a police chase and crash had led to the arrest of two suspected thieves. investigators say the suspects stole a laptop from an elderly person inside a starbucks in el cerrito.two officers apparently saw it all go down ... police say the laptop was returned to the victim. happening now:san francisco -- along with new york and philadelphia -- are suing the defense department over gun-check system failures. (áááboxesááá) the federal lawsuit says many service members who are disqualified from gun ownership were not reported to the national background check. the cities argue that the defense department failed to report disqualifying records for at least two decades. they say this led to a former air force member to buy a high- powered rifle and shoot and kill 26 people in a texas church in november. pentagon officials say the department is continuing to work with the u.s. military leaders to refine its policies.

it's a great place to live ... one reason -- the weather.but -- this new years eve, idaho can celebrate being the most popular state in the country. as grant lodes explains ... it recorded the biggest population jump in 2017 ... mostly because of people moving there from other states. here are the top and bottom five states, based on population gains and losses in the fiscal year that ended july 31.you can see the states with the biggest increases are all adjacent: idaho, nevada, utah and washingtonthe only exception is florida, which barely beat out arizona for the number five spot. and get this: right next to idaho is wyoming, which had the biggest population drop.the reason can be found by looking at two other states losing people: alaska and west virginia have one big thing in common with wyoming: they are rich in natural resources.oil reserves

in alaska, coal mines in wyoming and west virginia ... all of them once considered blessings.the downside is that the states are now locked into the cycle of energy price fluctuations.idaho, by comparison has a diverse economy and the nation's fourth=lowest cost of living. its capital city is booming. the boise metro area now has more people than the entire state of wyoming.the population shift could have an impact on congress.illinois lost nearly 34=thousand people last year.that's only three=tenths of one percent of the total population.but if the trend continues, illinois could see its delegation shrink dramatically."we very well could, we probably will lose at least one, if not two congressional seats." for your money...the u-s, mexico, and canada are re- negotiating ... the north american free trade agreement ... and after the first round of meetings ... the future of trade is unclear.as anna wiernicki reports ... the price of popular imports from

1:03-1:19i mean name it, it's avocado, it's corona beer, it is other things that we buy from mexico that are just going to go up because then different tariffs are going to come in and who is going to pay for it? it's not the companies, they are going to pass it on to the consumers, you and i.anna wiernicki washington correspondenttake cg @ 1:21the next round of negotiations starts in january. that round will take place in mexico. this year has been tough for traditional retailers. more than six-hundred companies filed for bankruptcy in 2017 - including toys-r-us, payless shoes and the limited. reporter natasha chen explains the "state of retail" after holiday sales. five billion pounds of returned gifts -i've already got enough of this. or, it's too small.- are about to end up in a landfill.that's according to optoro, a tech company that helps retailers manage their returns.and that trash heap for the unwanted - may be a metaphor for the retail industry itself...mark cohen/professor, columbia business school: "well this is the current retail apocalypse." with store closing

announcements tripling in 2017 to about seven thousand.but some companies have managed to survive...mark cohen/professor, columbia business school: "many of the legacy retailers, the dept stores for example, who have created their own websites, now find their core customer has migrated over to their website"and - the c-e-o of the international council of shopping centers says occupancy rates at malls around the country remain at about 93 percent. but even when you're at the mall - you have the power to comparison shop - by checking the price of the same item online.that gives retailers very limited pricing power.at a time when unemployment has reached a 17-year low, retail was one of the biggest job losers this year, falling by 36 thousand jobs.even though industry experts expect holiday sales increased about four percent compared to last year - some of them believe a rash of new store closing announcements will come after all the tinsel and holly come down.in washington, i'm natasha chen reporting. take a look at this ... an apartment engulfed in flames...and investigators

believe it was all caused by a toy car. the flames broke out in baton rouge, louisiana on christmas night... and damaged about two-dozen apartments. no one was hurt. but the fire...has left 26 people without a home. firefighters say someone left a remote-controlled toy car charging on a bed. investigators say it was a "tracks-s" brand car that used a lithium battery charger. they believe the toy overheated...setting off a fire that spread through the building. as we approach the end of

the year..we are looking back at the best of the worst of people behaving badly.. stanley roberts picked out some of his favorite segments. how far would you go to

holiday in mar-a-lago.as he heads toward the first anniversary of his inauguration one of mister trump's main goals remains: "to make america great again." and in the waning days of 2017, the u-s economy is strong under president trump, with the stock market up more than five-thousand points. david gergen/senior political analyst"it's already doing well, he inherited a good economy from barack obama but if he can get it up higher, that would make a major difference."speaking of major differences, mister trump has clashed with some republicans over the past few months.but the party ended the year by passing a major piece of legislation: the tax cuts and jobs act.david swerdlick/washin gton post"he has given establishment republicans what they want in the form of the tax cut bill and he's given his hardcore base what they want in terms of having the right enemies."as for enemies....at least political ones.....the democratic party scored a major victory toward the end of 2017.... when candidate doug jones won a senate seat in alabama.leaders hope that sort of momentum continues in the new year.

david swerdlick/washington post "democrats coming into 2018, and then more specifically into 2020, need to play the populist game better than president trump."one issue both parties want to complete in 2018: a new health care deal. but right now there's no word of anything imminent.sen. bernie sanders/i-vermont"we should join every other major country on earth, guarantee health care of all people and end the absurdity of paying twice as much per capita."i'm john lorinc reporting. ( will ) in just a few days... people will ring in the new year with celebrations all around the world. and this year... there will be increased security in las vegas following the mass shooting in october that killed 58 people. karen castro has the details. more than 330-thousand visitors from around the world will ring in 20-18 on the las vegas strip... and elvis is excited.((mark rumpler - elvis impersonator: we're going to rock. we're gonna have the best new year's eve in the

world, as always.)) but it's not always that nevada lawmakers approve more than 350-thousand dollars for new year's eve. that's almost triple the amount compared to last year when about 120- thousand dollars was spent on security. the increase in funds will go to pay for almost 360 nevada national guard troops... up from about 160 last year.((sheriff joe lombardo - clark county: it's going to be more robust. there's going to be definitely more resources dedicated to the strip to ensure a secure environment to include fremont street.)) during our weekly cup of joe segment... sheriff joe lombardo said the police department is also getting more help from the u-s department of homeland security. it comes down to how the federal government uses a system called the special event assessment rating, also known as "sear."((sheriff joe lombardo - clark county: depending on the labeling of one, two or three, one being the most robust, depends on how much resources come from the federal government to assist you and this year we have been relabeled at a sear one event.)) after the one- october shooting, the sheriff says they were deciding whether or not to move forward

set to become an official training site for the u-s olympic ski and snowboard team. resort officials say they reached the agreement last week. olympic officials say the tahoe resort has produced some of the nation's best skiers and snowboarders. .. since squaw valley hosted the 19-60 winter games. it is one of five official training sites in the u-s... and the second in california...the other being mammoth mountain. 4 your health this morning ... more pregnant women are using marijuana to soothe anxiety and morning sickness. researchers observed a sample of pregnant women in california and saw a three percent increase in use from 20-09 through 20-16. one expert says the rise might be partially explained by the increased availability of legal marijuana in recent years. while marijuana's effects on a fetus aren't clear... doctors do caution women that smoking could lead to lower birth weights and developmental problems. up next on the kron four morning news... the latest in

( darya ) our top story this our top ( darya ) ( darya ) our top story this morning.... a somber week for c-h-p officers... who are mourning the death of one of their own. 33-year-old andrew camilleri lost his life while trying to protect others on christmas eve. his body was returned back to his hometown of tracy yesterday. officer camilleri leaves behind a wife and three young kids. he was killed by a suspected drunk driver while on patrol on interstate 880 in hayward. the 22-year-old suspect remains hospitalized -- and has not yet been

publicly identified. kron 4's spencer blake was in tracy - talked to people who knew the fallen officer. (reporter)"tuesday afternoon that procession of chp and other law enforcement vehicles had sirens blaring as they accompanied the body of fallen chp officer andrew camilleri." (nats of sirens)despite the loud wailing, this somber line of cars had a reverence about it.people in tracy came to join officers, firefighters, and a ladder truck salute in saying goodbye to camilleri, who died in the early hours of christmas day.he and his partner were in their patrol vehicle on i-880 when c-h-p says a 22-year-old man who had been drinking and using marijuana, slammed into them, killing camilleri and severely injuring his partner.the congregation at mission city church where the camilleris attend in tracy ..is still processing the devastating news."andrew was a man of faith. he loved jesus, and so we have a hope to know that as hard as it is to say goodbye, and to deal with the finality of losing somebody that you love, we know that we'll get to see him again."the rookie officer leaves behind a wife and three kids.a friend of the

family, who is also one of their pastors, says andrew went 'all in' on things he was passionate about, and had a goal to make a difference. ( will ) a san francisco neighborhood is on edge... after finding out a man they've known for years has been arrested ... for possessing child pornography after a four month investigation ... police arrested michael connell. he's accused of uploading and trading graphic child

pornography. the police department's crimes against children unit ... found connell's laptop with pictures and videos of children. police are urging anyone who believes they may be a victim ... to come forward. ( will ) san francisco police also announced the arrest of gilbert francisco on child porn charges. earlier this month... police searched his home and found thousands of videos and pictures on his computer. ( darya ) police are looking for a suspect... wanted for a deadly shooting in fairfield. it happened christmas day... on second street. at the scene... officers found a man lying in the road suffering from a gunshot wound. the vicitm -- identified as 24-year-old jakkari sampson -- was taken to the hospital where he died. officers have not released a description of the shooter... who is on the loose. ( darya ) a scare in the south bay... after a van crashes into a home. take a look at these photos you can see the van... lodged into the front of this house. it happened just after six last night... in the area of

los padres and bohannon in santa clara. fortunately... no one was inside home. but two people near the home did suffer minor injuries. ( darya ) police are looking for a man... who robbed two mail trucks in antioch. these are pictures of that man and his car. the robberies happened on christmas day and yesterday... in broad daylight. if you recognize the car... or the man... the antioch police department would like to hear from you. ( will ) san francisco is one of three cities... suing the defense department... over gun-check system failures. the federal lawsuit says many service members who are disqualified from gun ownership... were ánot reported to the national background check system. new york city and philadelphia are the other cities suing. the suit argues that the defense department failed to report disqualifying records for at least two decades. the cities say this allowed a former air force member to buy a high-powered rifle and shoot and kill 26 people in a texas

church in november. local law enforcement officials rely on the f-b-i's database to do background checks on gun permit applications and to monitor purchases. pentagon officials say the department is continuing to work with the u.s. military leaders to refine their policies. women are using marijuana to soothe anxiety and morning sickness. researchers observed a sample of pregnant women in california and saw a three percent increase in use from 20-09 through 20-16. one expert says the rise might be partially explained by the increased availability of legal marijuana in recent years. while marijuana's effects on a fetus aren't clear... doctors do caution women that smoking could lead to lower birth weights and developmental problems. ( will ) in the north bay... fire breaks out at a santa rose home... causing 150- thousand dollars worth of damage. it happened around 11:45 yesterday morning on boyd street near barham avenue. crews quickly put out the fire. luckily... no one was inside. fire crews say a neighbor saw the home on fire and quickly escorted the 81-year-old homeowner out. crews believe the fire was accidental... but the cause remains under investigation. ( darya ) a passenger mix-up at l-a-x forces the pilot to make a u-turn... back to the airport. officials said an "unauthorized person" made their way on to an "all nippon airways" flight heading to tokyo. after the flight

returned to the airport hours into the trip... police said it was just a "mix up." model chrissy tiegen and her husband singer john legend were on the flight. on twitter... tiegen said that passengers were told the person in question had a ticket for a completely different airline. officials say they're accommodating all 226 passengers... by giving them hotel rooms and rebooking them for a morning flight. hayward. the 22-year-old suspect remains hospitalized -- and has not yet been publicly identified. kron 4's spencer blake was in tracy - talked to people who knew the fallen officer. (reporter)"tuesday afternoon that procession of chp and other law enforcement vehicles had sirens blaring as they accompanied the body of fallen chp officer andrew camilleri." ( will ) playing video games too much and too often will soon be recognized as a mental health disorder. "gaming disorder" will be added to the official list of diseases by the world health organization next year. symptoms include the inability to control when -- and how -- to play video games. another red flag is when someone choses games over

other interests in life - and keeps playing despite negative consequences. adding "gaming disorder" to the list means that it will be recognized by doctors and insurance companies. ( will )( will ) in the north bay... fire breaks out at a santa rose home... causing 150- thousand dollars worth of damage. it happened around 11:45 yesterday morning on boyd street near barham avenue. crews quickly put out the fire. luckily... no one was inside. fire crews say a neighbor saw the home on fire and quickly escorted the 81-year-old homeowner out.

crews believe the fire was accidental... but the cause remains under investigation. ( darya ) a passenger mix-up at l-a-x forces the pilot to make a u-turn... back to the airport. officials said an "unauthorized person" made their way on to an "all nippon airways" flight heading to tokyo. after the flight returned to the airport hours into the trip... police said it was just a "mix up." model chrissy tiegen model chrissy tiegen and her husband singer john legend were on the

flight. on twitter... tiegen said that passengers were told the person in question had a ticket for a completely different airline. officials say they're accommodating all 226 passengers... by giving them hotel rooms and rebooking them for a morning flight.
