technology in a way that allows a multiplicity of voices, allows a diversity of views, but doesn't lead to a balkanisation of society but rather continues to promote ways of finding common ground. and, i'm not sure government can legislate that, but what i do believe is all of us in leadership have to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the internet. one of the dangers of the internet is that people can have entirely different realities. they can be cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases. there may be somebody who you think is diametrically opposed to you when it comes to your political views, but you root for the same sports team, or you notice that they're really good parents, and that's something as a parent you care about. and, you find areas of common ground, because you see that things aren't as simple as have been portrayed in whatever chat room you've been in. it is also, by the way, harder to be as obnoxious and cruel in person as people can be anonymously on the internet.">(vicki) mister obama also mister (vicki) the internet.">anonymously on the internet.">(vicki) the internet.">(vicki)

(grant) charities and non profits are preparing for the impact of the republican tax reform plan. why they say it could hurt their work in local communities.
5:30 pm
(grant) charities and other non-profits are bracing for the new year and the new tax law. they're concerned people won't give as much next year -- because fewer people will qualify for tax deductible donations. (vicki) our washington correspondent jessica smith reports on how non-profits hope to make ends meet. the united way had opposed the tax reform plan because of how it could impact charitable donations. the salvation army says it could hurt its ability to serve millions of people every year. now that the bill has become law, charities are encouraging people to donate before the end of the year. philanthropy groups estimate the republican tax overhaul could cause charitable giving to drop $13-24 billion dollars every year. tim delaney: in a nutshell, this tax bill will be devastating. tim delaney, the national council of
5:31 pm
nonprofits president, says doubling the standard deduction kills the incentive for people to donate. the change means fewer people will itemize their taxes and claim the charitable deduction. do i need this line??? tim delaney: it's going to hurt real people. delaney had hoped to see a universal charitable deduction, that people could claim even if they did not itemize. he says the wealthiest americans will still have incentive to donate, because they're more likely to itemize. tim delaney: the wealthy normally give to large institutions -- a new wing on the hospital, something with higher education -- it's the local y's, united ways, girls scouts that will be impacted.in a tweet, texas senator john cornyn called the argument "idiotic," saying in part "the dubious premise is that the reason people generously give to worthy causes is so they can deduct from their taxes." delaney argues the government will eventually cut spending on social services to pay for tax cuts, and expect nonprofits to fill the gaps.
5:32 pm
tim delaney: we're not going to be able to get the job done. elected officials need to know they cannot continue to expect nonprofits and foundations to fill the void that they are creating. delaney is urging people to pressure congress to adjust the law -- and donate before the end of the year while you can still take advantage of the deduction. jessica on cam charities also worry about high tax areas of the country, where people won't be able to deduct all of their property taxes. they say people in those areas will have less money to spare, meaning less money to give to charity. in washington i'm jessica smith (grant) a san francisco theft victim is fighting back. she says she's had 50 packages stolen in the past three months... and its only gotten worse. as kron 4's ella sogomonian tells us... the woman decided to leave a
