( will ) breaking news we are following this morning... people all that breaking news that we are following, people all across the bay area rattled this morning, by a 4.5ing magnitude earthquake. it was centered just east of berkeley. it hit around 2:40 this morning. this is a map showing all of the areas felt by the quake. >> this was provided by the usgs. good morning, i'm james fletcher. what you're seeing on the map here is considered did you feel it map. and people from all of these areas that you see outlined in the box have reported that they felt the quake, and it stretches from vallejo to the north past san jose, with the epicenter in berkeley. it is there where people felt it the strongest. this was a category 4.4 earthquake. it was originally reported as a

4.7 but since downgraded. here is another shake map which sort of illustrates how strong the shaking was felt, as far out from the epicenter as people have reported, and as you can see, the color changes a bit, as you move out. now right there at the epicenter, where you can see it, sort inform a light greenish color, that indicates that people were reporting feeling a moderate to strong sensation when the earthquake struck, and as it radiates farther away from the epicenter, it gets more into the lighter blue, which indicates very light or some weak feeling of shake can. so that is kind of -- shaking. so that is how people were describing it this morning. >> you and i were up at the time. i was up drinking coffee getting ready for work. it did not feel like a wave or a rolling motion, it was a shake. >> i felt the shower door kind of rattling and that's what clued me in there was an earthquake going on. >> we have lydia in the field right now. she is following the story as well, since the earthquake broke out. we want to get out live to her

in berkeley where the earthquake struck. lydia? >> reporter: i'm near the epicenter. i haven't talked to too many people but the people i talked to definitely felt the earthquake. i was on the way to work driving so i didn't really feel, it but i did hear some people, especially outside the station when i got to work say they did feel it, and they were very scared because it brought back memories from the loma prieta earthquake in '89. it is a little bit of shaking by people obviously because they're thinking about the earthquake as well. the people i did talk to told me they did feel it. i am waiting for a person who is inside getting his coffee and i will have a few live interviews and a few interviews with people who can tell me where they were and how they felt when it happened. more throughout the morning. back to you in the studio. >> thank you very much, lydia. we of course have been getting responses from people. in fact, our phone lines at the assignment desk started ringing immediately as the earthquake broke out. we have been getting a number of eel mail, too.

want to read a few of them. and -- e-mail, too. and we want to read a few of them. and this will give you an idea what people were feeling at the time. this is lisa. lisa e-mailing after the earthquake, wow, felt that 4.5, it was4.5 in san rafael. shook me out of my bed sheets. >> and sonny said, you probably already got a lot of reports but i woke up to what i thought it was a truck passing by. it felt like a truck or a low plane going by the house. and very loud and felt like five to eight seconds. >> for her it felt like eight seconds maximum. and it literally rocked her out of her bed. >> she is located in hercules. >> a lot of times, when people say that is not that big or i didn't feel it, why are you making a big deal of this, i think it is universal. everybody acknowledges how big this earthquake was. >> and it was strong enough to knock things off shelves.

in fact, you're looking at video into the newsroom this morning, this out of san leandro from a safeway, as you can see, the shaking was strong enough that items literally fell off shelves. you can see it littering the aisleway and this is a scene that we will probably see repeated in other grocery stores too. right in that area. berkeley. san leandro. oakland. other areas. emeryville. so again as more video comes in, we will be sharing that with you throughout the morning. >> speaking of video, please, if anything fell, at your location, please tweet us, sends it to us at kron4.com. by all means, we would love to hear from you. call into the news interview. we would love to do live interviews throughout the morning. this was felt by thousands. i have a friend who works at san francisco international, he is a police officer and they felt it there. and at san francisco international, they built that location to withstand shaking. and even he felt it. >> and i mean this wasp on the the hayward fault. you can -- this was on the hayward fault.

you can see the red line passing through the star. that is the hayward fault line. it passes right beneath the claremont hotel. and i would imagine that they probably felt it fairly strongly there as well. and we are getting e-mails from as far south as santa cruz. and this one from melissa who wrote in and said i live in santa cruz and it rattled my windows. another viewer wrote in saying, quote, woke up to check the kids and felt the earthquake, shook the whole house, luckily i was with the kids when it happened. scared it would last longer. all of the kids' furniture shook. that's one thing my wife did this morning was check on the kids. my son slept through it. my daughter who has a bunk style bed who is off the ground and she felt the shaking motion more than my son who sleeps closer to the ground. >> and e-mail after e-mail, responses, it woke them out of bed. it got them out of bed. >> pretty incredible. we want to talk with alice

earthquake. [ station audio trouble ] >> she is very anxious since then. she wants me to let her out. she won't settle back down. my cat running. it seemed to last a long time, too. >> absolutely. james and i were up, and it did feel like it was going to last quite some time. did you hear the walls cracking? i have always said that an earthquake is scary but it is the sounds that accompany an earthquake, the rattling, the cracking, did you hear that as well in alice? i didn't. i was in in a mobile home. and it seemed to kind of move with the shaking. >> okay. and you live by yourself, right? are there any other family members that they woke up? >> yes. >> okay, you live by yourself. >> yes. >> okay, well, alice, thank you

so much for calling in. and well, actually, while i have you on the phone, when this earthquake happened this morning, and i will get your reaction to this as well, my first thought was i wonder how strong this is, the last one that jumped in my mind was the napa earthquake, in 2014, and it was a 6.0. i'm sure you felt that one. how did this compare to that? i know the magnitude was far less, but it still brings to mind that earthquake. >> you know, i don't even remember feeling that earthquake. i don't even remember what i was doing at the time. one i really felt was the loma prieta one. this one really rattled and rolled. i was in a draft class at jc, sitting on a stool, and the whole wall of windows were just like moving back and forth like a wave, and i thought uh-oh, you know. we are in trouble. >> i remember that one.

6.9. that one was fairly strong. alice, thank you so much for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> you bet. and so that was her perspective. and again, if you felt it as well and if you've got the time this morning, we would sure appreciate you calling in and sharing with us your story. like i said, my wife first thought was let me check on the kids, if they're scared or if they're awake, and only my daughter was. >> but we have breaking news to pass along to you. a lot of people turn to bart, obviously, a lot of people are heading back to work this morning, or back to school, and we just found out from bart that they are going to have probably delays because they want to inspect the tracks before they run at full speed, full operation. they need to make sure because of the quake, now that we know it is 4.4, they want to make sure their system is okay before they send thousands of riders and travelers on to the bart train. >> that's the earthquake protocol. we will be touching base with robin winston in the traffic center and hopefully not have a big impact on the morning commute this morning.

that is something they will have to do. right now, we're not getting reports of any major damage. just sort of minor things. just like the safeway video with a few items falling off shelves. and that is probably what a lot of folks experienced in their house especially close to the epicenter. >> on the phone we have stanley roberts, you were i would imagine asleep at the time and i know you live in the peninsula. describe how the earthquake felt to you, stanley. >> i woke up about a second before the actual quake, i don't know why, but i did, i felt it, it started out as a quick little minor jolt, and then all of a sudden, there was a second little wave after that, p and i was like okay, should i get up, how long is this going to be? what is going to happen? and then of course, once the quake stopped, any self- respecting person would do, i jumped on twitter. >> well, i mean your first question is, did that really happen? did i feel that? and you go to places like

twitter to see if anybody else is responding to it as well? and what did you see? people i'm sure were on there. >> when i first got on, i thought it was a 3.5 out of san jose. and then i went looking, and kron tweeted, that it was a 4.7 out of berkeley. and i couldn't believe it. and then i started reading on all of the different comments all over the bay and everybody felt this quake. one way or another. and it turned out to be out of berkeley. and i'm thinking downgraded slightly but still a pretty strong jolt. >> sure. >> and you have to understand something. i was in montana a few months ago, 5.8 and all of a sudden i come home and i get here, and i just got back from being on vacation, and another earthquake, boom and this is getting annoying now. >> what a way to welcome you back, stanley and we were

asking alice if she referred the napa quake a few years back. were you in town during the napa quake? i think you were. >> i was in town. and the napa quake, i knew, it was probably -- to give you a little bit of history, i have been about four or five major earthquakes, when you say major, i mean major earthquakes, so the napa one, i knew when it hit that it was somewhere else, the epicenter was somewhere big nearby, but it wasn't close enough that i felt it strong enough, so when this one hit, i felt like it was nearby, but it doesn't feel like it had the same effect from the napa. the napa was just really strong, a strong jolt. this one started like a little tiny jolt, and then sort of started to rock back and forth and then went away just like that. some quakes will last, and shake and keep shaking again. i was waiting for the big buildup. here i am at 4:00 in the morning talking to you on tv.

( will )( james ) we will have we are back now, time is 4:15. the breaking news story this morning, an earthquake that struck at 2:39 this morning, originally reported as a 4.7, it has since been downgraded to a 4.4, but the epicenter puts it right there on the hayward fault, which runs right through berkeley. obviously a densely populated area here around the bay area.

we have had a number of people reported feeling this. and it lasted only maybe three to five seconds. but it was felt very wide as you can see on the map. let's join the us geological survey, and keith newton joins us now. we could feel it, and it was felt all over the bay area. what is your official, your instruments telling us this morning, keith? >> good morning. as you said, in your lead-in, the magnitude now is estimated to be magnitude 4.4. it takes a while for all of the ins meants to come in and for those determinations to be made and calculations to be done. but that is what we are seeing right now. i live in albany. so i definitely was awoken by this event. >> so does that, on the grand scale of things, that would be categorized as what, a moderate or weak earthquake? how do you guys officially categorize an earthquake like that, 4.4?

>> i think that this fits in with what we call a moderate category. i actually don't know what the low end of moderate is. but yes, it certainly was widely felt. probably didn't do much damage. earthquakes of this magnitude tend to maybe move things around on shelves a little bit, or disorient things hanging on the wall, but i think i would be surprised if there is much in the way of damage to this. >> we are not getting reports of major damage, but we are looking at a shot from a safeway in san leandro with a few items that are knocked to the floor as someone is walking through the aisle shooting video with their cell phone. typical damage you would expect with an earthquake of this scale, i would suppose. >> after shocks, we know one in the cupertino area. are you hearing of any other after-shocks at this time? >> you are right to expect after-shocks. that wouldn't be a surprise. this is an area that has

produced earthquakes near this magnitude in the last 10 years, i think there have been three above magnitude 4. so this is an area that does produce earthquakes of about this size. there was the -- there are going to be after-shocks. and additionally, there is a really small chance, maybe 5 to 10% that this will be followed by a bigger earthquake. >> so there is that small chance this could actually be a pre-shock to something larger. that is always the worry when you live in earthquake country like the bay area. is there any more coming? we don't know. than is really true. we just don't know. we will have to wait about and see. >> that's right. >> we will have to look back and think about this from a statistical and historical perspective. but yes, every earthquake has a chance that it is a, what we would call, 4 shock and a bigger event is following. but statistically on average, if you look at earthquakes that have occurred in california over time, maybe a 5 or 10% that any individual earthquake will be followed by a bigger

earthquake. >> what is the window for that? say if it happens in a day or so, is it still connected to this? or if we feel a 4.4 or bigger earthquake is, that its own earthquake at that particular point? how much are we tied to this point? >> great question. sorry about that. the 5 to 10% estimate of a bigger earthquake, that is in the next several days. >> several days. >> and after-shocks can go on for weeks, or even months, but since this is only a moderate earthquake, we probably won't -- well, yeah, after-shocks can go on for quite a while. >> and this is as we can see connected to the hayward fault which runs right beneath berkeley. a heavily populated area of the bay. what reminder of this for people who live in earthquake country but pem who just moved here that are brand -- but people who just moved here that are brand new, what does this

remind you of? get your earthquake kit together, right? >> we live in earthquake country. we do things that the response organizations tell us to do. and this are lots of places online that you can find those. things like have a communication plan so you know how to communicate with your family following an event. and have several day supply of materials you need to exist, because there probably won't be a lot of help following a big earthquake. mainly talk about this, and be prepared with your family. and be ready to go for a few days on your own without a whole lot of assistance. >> very good. keith, thank you so much for joining us. i know it is early in the morning. but appreciate you offering your expertise, and helping reassure all of our viewers that, you know, that this was not the big one, this was just a, you know, another earthquake, in a long string of earthquakes we have experienced around the bay area, but thank you so much for offering your insights this morning. >> have a nice morning. you're welcome. >> you bet. let's head to the berkeley

area, that's where we say that perhaps, that's the epicenter, near a hotel, and that's why we sent immediately, lydia to berkeley, and were you driving at the time lydia? but your security guard, he felt it. can you talk more about that? >> i was driving at the time, i didn't feel it at all. i talked to other people who said they slept right through. it but here now with me is is james. and james is my security guard. full disclosure there. and james actually says, you live near the hayward fault, right? >> yes, near the hayward fault. >> i felt two big jerks. and lasted maybe 5 or 7 secondses. i was waiting for the stuff in the house to fall down. nothing fell down. and then i was waiting for the after-shock. but it was two distinct real bad jerks. i knew it was a pretty good quake. >> as far as the loma prieta earthquake, were you here during that time? >> yes. >> did it bring back memories. >> i did.

since i live on the hayward fault, i live above a big reservoir, i'm always waiting to make sure that everything is going to be safe there. but it is one of these things that, you know, you always think about in the back of your mind, especially late at night and early in the morning, and so luckily, nothing -- i tkpw- pbt didn't feel any other damage. and i was waiting for an after- shock and i didn't feel anything after. >> you live near the fault and what precautions in your home? >> in my car, i have a set of clothes and in my garage, i have a whole box of earthquake supplies basically. food, water, especially water, you need about two weeks of water, so i got about six cases of water, and so i'm kind of prepared, i think, but i just don't know if i can get to it, if there is a very severe earthquake. >> thank you so much, james. again, james is my security guard that is here, we will be talking to people all morning. dy speak to some people who --

welcome back to the kron 4 morning news. i'm rebecca strom, in the storm center tracking in the bay area. a lot of this is activity over the last three hours. we are currently seeing some sprinkles around the bay area. here is our storm tracker 4 radar right now, showing it, most of the activity, in the north bay right now, but look at this. just off the coast, heading toward san francisco, and then eventually, we are going to be seeing it push even furthert to east bay zone. so yes, sprinkled mostly in the

north bay, so 101 is affected this morning. also 80 coming into san francisco, you are going to see some of those sprinkles on the bay bridge right now. future cast showing us how the rest of the morning is going to be shaking out. you can see currently right now some sprinkles and we will see it off and on throughout the day today. into today, another round of rain in the overnight hours tomorrow morning. another weather check in a bit. let's head to the traffic center and get a traffic update with robin. mass transit and service delays this morning, because of the earthquake, that we have been telling you about. bart continues to hold their trains as they're conducting track inspection this morning following 49.4 earthquake that happened at 2:39. so at last check, they were still inspecting the tracks. there is no estimated time as to when they will release trains but they are reporting that shoe expect major delays on all trains departing this morning. the first trains that normally

take off at 4:00, we is have not received word that those -- we have not received words that those trains have been released. vta is inspecting the tracks and expect delays there as well. as soon as they release the trains, i will let you know. you may want to consider an alternate source of business. 880 nimitz, a crash and a car fire, that has two lanes blocked. traffic is back at the limit. no big problems leaving san leandro into hayward. i will check the bridges coming up in a bit. back to you. >> we are continuing to follow breaking news. 2:39 this morning, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in the east bay, located in berkeley. here is a map for you. we will have much more on this story in a few minutes from now. on this breaking news.

people all across the bay area are rattled by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake. originally, it was 4.7 but the usgs said it is now 4.4. here is the map with a lot of people wondering where it was and we know the epicenter is in the berkeley area. >> right along the hayward fault and the epicenter is beneath the claremont hotel. if you are familiar, you know it is near claremont avenue and ashby. the epicenter almost under the swimming pool at the claremont hotel and this was felt far and wide. this is the map and people were reporting this to the usgs that they felt shaking and it was stronger close to the epicenter and weaker going out. it was felt as far north as forest hill north of santa rosa and we talked to someone from there this morning and as far south as santa cruz with people saying they felt the shaking.

>> let's go out to berkeley to get the very latest on the earthquake. lydia, what are people telling you? >> reporter: some people said they slept through the whole thing and others are use to earthquakes and have said that this earthquake woke them up, it was two big jolts and i spoke to my security guard who lives along the hayward fault and he told me it scared him. he started thinking about the one from 1989, the loma prieta and he was waiting for the big one to hit. he had two tolton people at work said that he was experiencing this. >> it was over by the time we figured out what this was, it was over and it was pretty crazy. >> reporter: we asked him if

everyone dived under the desks and he said it was so quick that nobody knew what to do. scary for him and he was from new york and has been here for a while and has been through some earthquakes and said this is one of the strongest he has felt since being in california. kron4 news from oakland. >> thank you very much, lydia. as we look at the maps showing the epicenter, we will read off the emails. people are reporting that they felt this the moment the ground started shaking and this email comes to us from the richmond area. genesis said her house was shaking and she thought it would break down. she said it was very scary and

she hadn't felt anything like this since the napa earthquake. >> robert said i lived in hayward and i was woken by what felt like being hit by a house. he thought a car hit his house and he checked outside and there was nothing and it turned out it was the earthquake. >> the quake is over but it will be felt in other areas for quite some time in the form of bart delays. over to robin winston. >> it's protocol to inspect the tracks after an earthquake, no matter how minor it is and that's what's happening now. i received words -- word that bart is inspecting the train. they just released them about five minutes ago but are inspecting the track. keep in mind the trains will run at reduced speeds until the track inspection is completed. expect major bart delays on all departing trains, up to 20 minutes as they inspect the tracks.

same with bta as they inspect the tracks. plan ahead or consider an alternate source of transportation and i will let you know when they get back. it is slippery, so watch your speed. it's a good ride into san francisco. >> let's continue to hear from loyal viewers who sent this to us. here's arlene who says that she felt the quake and it woke up her dog. her dog is barking and she sent this at about 3:00 in the morning. people said that they were having many experiences. >> claudia has a different experience. she wrote saying the house shook with a rolling sensation from south through north and then some sharp jolts west as

it rolls along the fault line. this was on richmond and gaynor avenue. where i live, i felt a rumbling and slow shaking sensation but people who live closer, even on the peninsula, they felt these distinct jolts. >> i felt one strong shake. i live in fremont and it felt like a good shake and lasted several seconds. if you are just joining us, we want to show you a map. in berkeley, we talkedda&dj to usgs and initially, it was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake and it has since been downgraded to 4.4 along the hayward fault and according to the usgs, there will be aftershocks for days to come and we've heard reports of a 2.5 magnitude aftershock in

what we are talking about. the north bay is seeing the activity through richmond and those areas are going to be slick this morning. we have activity offshore pushing into san francisco and further east through the next little while and that is the current conditions we are looking at. definitely, bring your umbrella again. on around the futurecast, i will talk about how long the storm will be with us with scattered showers currently and advancing ahead, it will stick with us through much of the morning commute. by the 8:00 hour, it will look like this and then it will be lighter in the afternoon and overnight, we look at hit with another heavy round of rain that will be more intense with a yellow color on your screen and the rainfall will be more thick and intense and tomorrow morning, we will have a wet

drive and there will be a complete weather check in a bit. now, back to the news. >> we want to go back out live to the area where lydia pantazes is covering the earthquake. >> reporter: i'm here with gina and we won't say which hospital she works at, but she works at a local hospital and has to get back to work but she wants to talk about how she felt. >> it was loud. the whole building shook really hard and it was definitely loud and we realized it was an earthquake. >> reporter: what happened in the hospital? >> nothing much. it woke up people and scared people and was much louder than previous earthquakes i have felt at the hospital. it is a big building and was definitely scary for people. >> reporter: i could imagine people were afraid. >> everyone was scared.

people were freaking out. our call lights all went off at once in the building. we have a lot of travel nurses, non-californians and they were more scared and rattled than the locals who have felt this before. >> everything was fine? >> no damage that i know of or nothing like that, it's figured people and i can't emphasize how loud it was. >> reporter: you talked about the nurses who are traveling and not used to that? >> they wanted to bolt, not sure what they should do. some people went for the doorways and hid underneath things. people remembered the earth crake drills from element -- the earthquake drills from elementary school. >> there were a lot of scared people, especially those that were sleeping.

reported on air and on. >> a retired transit bus driver, sharon, joins us. thank you for talking with us. can you describe the earthquake? more than two hours ago, striking at 2:39 in the morning? what did it feel like for you? >> i was sitting in my chair and i was using facebook and it was initially a mild shaking like a truck going by and then it hesitated and started going side to side and was shaking my chair. >> some people said it felt like this was in two waves. in fremont and felt like one wave. >> it was two waves, definitely come out here. it felt like somebody was

grabbing your chair and shaking it back and forth rapidly. then, it hesitated and was really going back and forth. the reason was that i was driving transit and was i was -- and during the loma prieta, i was on the bridge and this was just a tickle compared to that. i don't really get alarmed unless it really takes off. i don't get too alarmed, in general, unless something gets really stronger like the loma prieta. >> a lot of folks that were around then have been saying the same thing. thank you very much for joining us this morning. this echoes what lydia said in her interview with the hospital employee.

that it was more scary than damaging. strongly felt but no injuries reported. it alarmed a lot of folks and we are covering it to assure you. so far, so good. it was a scare but it looks like we got through it without any major damage or significant injuries. 4:40 and we will take a quick break and come back with continuing coverage.

welcome back. we are following breaking news. 2:39 this morning, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck along hayward fault in berkeley. 60 miles north of us, you could feel it and all the way to santa cruz and the further out from the epicenter, the weaker the shaking was felt. those near the quake, it startled a lot of people and we

want to chat with fred who joins us by phone and you said that you live near the claremont hotel and that would put you closer to the epicenter. you felt this stronger than anybody this morning. describe what you felt when this struck? >> it's interesting. i hear people say how hard it was and i was born and raised here and it was average, moderate. >> interesting. >> that is what the usgs classified it, moderate. >> it wasn't sudden or jolting or knocked you out of bed, and some people said? >> it was, but i experienced many of these in my lifetime. my first thought when this happened, is that it would be larger. >> we've all thought that. >> when this subsides, we have

concerns that it is a prelude to something else. you know? >> i haven't felt any aftershocks. >> anything fall down at your location? we saw things falling from safeway. anything falling at your location? >> no. also, in the past when that happens, you notice this, something falls and i haven't seen anything. >> that's interesting. what were you doing at the time and what was the first sensation, a rumbling or a jolt, a couple of jolts? >> it's like a lot of the quakes. this is a rumbling and then there were a couple of jolts, like some have said.

basically, by the time you process this in your head, it's finished, you know? >> it felt like a shake and not a roll. the epicenter is like a wave or a role? >> it was a little bit of a roll, the initial shock and then it sort of subsided. it kept shaking ever so slightly and then dissipated. >> it sounds like you've been in the area a while and are no stranger to earthquakes. is your earthquake kit ready to go, are you prepared, or like me? >> i'm somewhat prepared. i have water and food and some things, you know? how prepared, i'm not sure if it's adequate or not. i do have some of the

provisions. >> he is a pro. born and raised in california and classify this as moderate. if you are just joining us, thank you. we love to hear from you. please call to the newsroom at kron4 and we would love to interview you. the quake is over, but the effect may be felt for quite some time, especially if you are writing barge. >> the trains were a little late taking off. than to inspect the tracks. the track inspection is under way and the first trains that usually take off at 4:00 took off at 4:25 and they've released the trains but they are running at reduced speeds as the track inspections continue around the bay area. expect 15-20 minutes delays on the first trains and then 10-15 minutes on trains following. the inspections continue and the same thing with the tracks where passengers may expect delays or consider an alternate

choice of transportation. checking the bridges around the bay area, the roads are slick. don't forget your headlights and wipers. i need you to remember that there will be a nice ride across the san mateo bridge. no big problems from hayward to the peninsula and more drive times coming up. for now, more on the wet weather with rebecca. >> definitely the roadways are slick with light rainfall around the bay area and current conditions, right now, you can see it has been pretty steady for the early morning hours and the bulk of this is mostly in the north. the activity offshore is heading our direction and parts of the peninsula will be affected. also, it will push further east and 580, the richmond san

rafael bridge through berkeley and the north bay, 101 through san rafael and through our votto will be quite slick over the next couple of hours. the futurecast shows where the rain will be falling for the rest of the day and on and off showers through the morning commute. when we go to the afternoon, things may lighten up and then into the overnight, into friday morning, another round of rain that may be heavy and hit the bay area. you will wake up with wet pavement and by 5:00, we may have a wet commute. try to leave earlier, definitely, because it will be consistent all friday morning and then into the afternoon, things will die down but we could see showers continuing into early saturday morning. i will have a complete weather

are followin breaking news came to us actually at 2:39 in the morning. you might have been up at the time. it was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake that struck eight miles below ground. it was centered east of berkeley near a hotel, james. >> we actually had a chance to chat earlier with keith knudsen from the usgs. he talked about how this was a light to moderate earthquake. strong enough certainly to be felt far and wide. reports from as far north as santa rosa to as far south as santa cruz that people did in fact feel this. in the wake of this earthquake there has been an after shock. a very minor one, only registering .7 in magnitude, also in berkeley near peoples park. in all likelihood you didn't feel that, but it is being registered by the usgs equipment so we have to include in that our list of aftershocks that have come since this initial earthquake struck. >> it didn't take very long for us to find out the epicenter. that's why we sent kron 4 to

berk toll get reaction from people who the earthquake was literally beneath her feet in that area. lydia. >> reporter: i have been talking to people all morning here with me now is norma. she works at safe way in the seafood department. tell me what you felt, nor movement. >> i felt a very long shake/rumble. things were falling off the shelves. to be honest with so much going on in the world i thought it was a bomb. but then i seen my employees, some of my coworkers going towards the door, so we kind of just looked around, and we figured it was an earthquake. it was very scary. >> reporter: you said things did fall off the shelf. >> oh yes. cans fell off the shelf. the seasoning fell off the shelf, yes. >> reporter: do you ever get used to the? you are from oakland, right? >> yes, i am, oakland, california, north oakland. >> reporter: so you have lived in this area your entire life. do you ever get used to these earthquakes? >> no. that one scared me very -- i was very scared and nervous. no, i don't ever get used to

them, ever. >> reporter: was this the strongest one you have felt in awhile? >> yes. i'm still a little shaken, because i was thinking, maybe there will be an after shock. i'm still a little shaken. it was strong. >> reporter: i know a lot of people were waiting for those aftershocks. after it was done were you kind of -- you said you were waiting for the after shock but you just just got back to work, right? >> kind of slowly but surely. we figured out what it was. we didn't get back to work right away. we just huddled around. some people still continued to work. some people still continued to work. me, i was kind of at the front door. >> definitely scary. >> oh yes. very scary. >> reporter: thank you. norma watches us every morning. thank you for watching us as well. reporting live in oakland, kron 4 news. >> very good, lydia. thank you so much. we want to share with you some of the other reactions that viewers have sent in to us via

e-mail. this one was from lisa. she says, wow, felt that earthquake shortly before 3:00. she said it shook me right up, meaning woke her up, and she had to get out of bed at that point like a lot of people dead just to investigate what was going on. >> we've been telling you all morning it's been felt as far north as santa rosa, possibly even north of. that joining us live by phone is victoria from santa rosa. thank you. i would imagine, victoria, it was pretty difficult to fall because to sleep. can you describe what it felt like in your area when it struck? >> well, i actually had just moved into my friend's trailer last night. and i know it sounds ridiculous but i was already paranoid because the lock had been broken into, in the past. and sought actually felt like at first that someone was trying to hook up the trailer and take it away, which shortly i realized that wasn't the case. so i just started googling

until i saw there was an earthquake, but i was surprised that it was in becialg. >> you felt it strong enough to shake. a lot of folks saying they felt their whole house shake. a lot of people saying they felt a large truck had drove by. >> definitely. the next thing i thought of was a truck. i'm not surprised. >> interesting. some people have reported items have fallen over. was it that strong in your area or was it just sort of a gentle shaking? >> i would say it's probably more of a gentle shaking. nothing fell but definitely strong enough to where it wouldn't have been wind or anything like that. >> to me it's not so much the motion. it's the sound an earthquake generates. i think it almost sounds like it's building up steam. did the sound get louder and louder with every second? >> yes, it did. i definitely -- i usually don't

protocol they kick into place when an earthquake strikes. they have to inspect all the tracks to make sure there isn't any damage. that causing significant delays, robin? >> yes, it is. is a to 20 minute, mostly on those first departing trains that usually take off at 4:00 a.m. they were late this morning because of the earthquake. they departed around 4:25. those trains are on the move. they are no longer being held but of course they're behind schedule and that makes other trains a little late, too. so bart says expect delays between 15 and 20 minutes on those first departing trains. the trains behind that will not be as late. but, yes, they have to inspect the tracks. they're running at reduced speeds. so that track inspection will continue for about another 30 minutes or so. same story for vta. they're telling passengers to expect delays as well as they inspect the tracks. but trains have been released, and they are on the move, just running a little bit behind schedule this morning. bridges look good. a little slick. don't forget the headlights and

wipers. only eight minutes to work your way into downtown san francisco. with more on how long this wet weather will last, here's rebecca strong. good morning. >> good morning, robin. yes, i am tracking some sprinkles right now around the bay area. storm tracker showing the current conditions. switching over to radar to show you where the raindrops are falling. we're seeing it right now mostly in our north bay zone. 101 is going to be a slick ride getting into san francisco. i'm tracking the rainfall, and in san francisco right now, part of your peninsula zone, look at all the activity that's still offshore that's going to make its way to the bay area over the next half an hour or so. everything is going to be pushing east. so your east bay zone is going to be affect as well. we are going to see mainly from san leandro north at that time once all this rainfall gets over to that area. so again, 80 is going to be really wet, the bay break. i'm tracking sprinkles there

with that camera. it is going to be slick. 101 coming out of the north bay. future cast showing us how the rest of your day is going to be shaping up. we're going to see on and off showers. by 8:00 we're still going to see this widespread rainfall. and then getting into the afternoon, it is going to be scattered, but once we get into the overnight hours interest early tomorrow morning we're going to get hit with another round of rain heavy at times. that's what the yellow coloring on your screen. that's more intense rainfall. so tomorrow morning's commute will be affected as well. we're going see a very wet pavement out there. it is going to continue through much of friday morning. and then into the afternoon it is going to taper off just a bit. and then overnight showers, we're going to see that into saturday morning as well. and then things should dry out once we get into saturday afternoon. we're looking at actually our time-lapse camera, the golden gate bridge, very cloudy conditions that we're seeing around the bay area. it is going to be sticking with

we are back now. time now 5:13. our breaking news story this morning that 4.4 magnitude earthquake that struck early this morning at 2:39 a.m. beneath berkeley. it was a pretty decent shaker. in my neighborhood i was actually up at the time when it struck. i felt more of a rumbling. i felt the house sort of shake subtly, but some folks have described several sharp jolts that they felt and a lot more extreme sensations the closer you get to the epi center. >> this took place along the hayward fault. we talked to the usgs. they said they're classifying this as a moderate quake. here's video from a safe way in the bay area. you can see that a lot of items fell to the ground there, and what they will do is they will shut down that safe way i would imagine for quite some time, clean it up, because they don't

want customers getting hurt no. fatalities no, one died. but it could be messy in some areas. it could be felt as far north as santa rosa. >> as far south as santa cruz. i have an e-mail here, i live in santa cruz and it rattled the windows. we did chat with the usgs this morning, keith could nude 70. we want to play back a portion of that interview now. >> let's join the usgs, u.s. geological survey. keith knudsen joins us now. we could feel it. it was felt all over the bay area. what is your official -- what are your instruments telling you this morning? >> yes, the magnitude is estimated 4.4. it takes awhile for all the instruments to come in, but that's what we're seeing right

now. i live in albany, so i definitely was awoken by this event. >> on the grand scale of things that would be categorized as, what, a moderate or a weak earthquake? how do you guys official categorize an earthquake like that, a 4.4? >> i think that this fits in what we would call a moderate category. i actually don't know what the low end of moderate is, but yeah, it certainly was widely felt. probably didn't do much damage. earthquakes of this magnitude maybe tend to move things around on the shelf, things hanging on the wall, but i think i would be surprised if there's much in the way of damage related to this. >> we're not getting any reports of any major damage but as we're talking to you we're looking at video shot from a safe way in san leandro. it's got a few items that have been knocked to the floor. so that's sort of the typical damage you would expect from an earthquake of this scale, i

suppose. >> keith, i would expect aftershocks. we know one in the cupertino area. are you hearing of any other aftershocks at this time? >> you're right to expect aftershocks. that wouldn't be a surprise. this is an area that has produced earthquakes near this magnitude in the last 10 years i think there have been three above magnitude 4. so this is an area that does produce earthquakes about this size. there likely are going to be aftershocks. additionally there's a really small chance, maybe 5 to 10% that this will be followed by a bigger earthquake. >> so there is that small chance this could be a pre shock to something larger. that's always the worry when you live in earthquake country. we just don't know. we just have to wait it out and see. >> that's right. we will have to look back and think about this from a statistical and historical

perspective. but every earthquake has a chance that it's what we would call fore shock and a bigger 70 following. but statistically on average if you look at earthquakes that have occurred in california over time, maybe a 5 to 10% chance that any individual earthquake will be followed by a bigger earthquake. >> what's the window for that? say if it happens in a day or so, is it still connected to this, or if we feel like a 4.4 or bigger earthquake, is that its own earthquake at that particular point? how much are we tied to this one? >> great question. sorry about that. the 5 to 10% estimate of a bigger earthquake, that's in the next several days. aftershocks can go on for weeks or even months. since this is only a moderate earthquake, we probably won't -- after should, can go on for quite awhile. >> and this was, as we can see, connected to the hayward fault which runs right beneath

berkeley. again, heavily populated area of the bay. what reminder is this for people that live in earthquake country? there are people that have just moved here that are brand-new. what does this remind people of? obviously get your earthquake kit together, right? >> yeah, as you said, we live in earthquake country so we should do things that all the response organizations tell to us do, and there are lots of places on-line that you can find those, things like have a communication plan so you know how to communicate with your family in an event. have several day supply of materials will you need to exist, because there probably won't be a lot of help following a big earthquake. mainly talk about this and be prepared with your family, and be ready to go for a few days on your own without a whole lot of assistance. >> very good, keith. thank you so much for joining us. i know it's early in the morning. we appreciate you offering your

expertise and helping reassure all of our viewers that this was not the big one, this was just another earthquake in a long string of earthquakes we've experienced around the bay area. thank you so much for offering your insights this morning. >> you're welcome. have a nice morning. >> that was our interview with keith knudsen earlier this morning. one of the things we always have to as sins all of this is the mass transit impacts, especially bart, because they do after protocol. >> yes, bart and other mass transit systems like vta, caltrain, they have to make sure their tracks are okay and that everything is running smoothly. that's what they're doing. they're saying that trains are a little behind schedule, 15 to 20 minutes. on those first trains, the ones that take off at 4:00, the first trains are 15 to 20 minutes late. the track inspection is underway. they are also rung at a reduced speed. >> does that many they think the later trains will start to get back on schedule real quick? >> exactly.

the later trains won't be as late. i talked to them on the phone 30 minutes ago. they told me after an hour they should be back to normal service. so we are getting to that point. maybe another 10 minutes or so and they should be back on time. once again do expect bart delays, 15 to 20 minutes. also expect vta delays as they are inspecting the tracks. no reports of any delays so far from other mass transit systems or rail systems throughout the bay area. if we get that information here in the newsroom i will definitely pass it on. meanwhile it is wet and raining. roads are very slick. we don't have too much major accidents workly. minor spin-outs. remember to reduce your speed. bay bridge looking good, less than 10 minutes from the maze to the skyway. some of you are still out on vacation, so no problems. no problems on 92. 15 minutes from 880 to 101. rebecca has more on your forecast. >> good morning, robin. we are seeing string calls around the bay area.

( will ) breaking news we are following this morning... people all 5:25. breaking news. the earthquake that struck early this morning at 2:39 beneath the ground in berkeley shaking a whole lot of people awake. we have been hearing that all morning long. >> initially it came across a 4.7, then the usgs downgraded it to a 4. 4. you can downgrade it all you want. my heart is still racing. it happened eight miles below ground east of berkeley. there's a map and graphics. this happened about two-and-a- half hours ago. a lot of people took to social media and said now that we're up, what do you want to talk about? they're not going back to bed. >> hopefully they're tuning in and hearing the good news that there's no major damage caused, no reports of any serious injury. just a lot of shaking and a lot of rattled nerves. that's kind of what we've been following here.

we've been getting viewer video like this video shot in a safe way in san leandro showing a few small items. we also heard, too, this morgue an interview from kron 4 in berkeley. lydia talked to a nurse who said a lot of patients at the hospital were hitting their call button. luckily everybody was fine. >> we will have much more on this breaking news, 4.4 magnitude earthquake. much more on this in just a few minutes from now.

some of them woken up. they said it was somewhat sharp, maybe two separate distinct impulses. others described it as a rumbling swaying. it was a 4.4 in magnitude. >> that's interesting. because i was up, i was drinking coffee. i had may suit on, i was ready to leave for work and it felt like one constant shake. it never felt like two or three. it felt like one constant, just somebody grabbing you. and the sound got louder and louder. >> we've got lydia in berkeley rate at the epicenter and has been talking to people getting their reaction and finding out from them what they felt. >> reporter: i have spoken to a lot of people this morning. most people obviously felt it. one person i spoke to did not feel it. i didn't feel it because i was driving to work at the time. but we did speak to a nurse earlier. she said that everybody at the hospital, the patients started waking up, and she said all the nurses had to go and check on

their patients. overall no lights turned off, nothing fell, so everything was okay. we also spoke to a woman who works in the safeway store. she said things did fall off the shelf. she was really worried about the quake. she was waiting for that big one. we also spoke with someone else who lives along the hayward -- the fault line, and they told me that they were also waiting for that next jolt, but they said they felt two jolts, and then it was over. so they were definitely afraid because a lot of people have lived through the loma prieta earthquake in '89 so they were waiting for that big one. we also spoke with a guy who was at work when it happened. >> yeah, felt it. it was crazy. it was like a tremendous boom, and then it was over by the time you figured out what it was. it was over. so it was pretty crazy. >> reporter: now, one question i ask people who are from

california, do you ever get used to the? that man that we spoke with, the one you just heard from, he actually has been in california for about 10 years. he's from new york. he said this is one of the strongest ones he's felt in a very long time. so since's been here actually. but we did speak to some people who are from california, asked them, hey, do you ever get used to it? and they said no. they set's scary no matter how big it is. if you can feel it, they're pretty scared of these earthquakes, even though they have lived through bigger ones. reporting live in oakland, lydia pantazes. >> the question is, is this the beginning of something bigger. everybody is kind of on edge while you wait, and even after it subsides, you're still waiting because you're not quite sure. >> i was telling myself, oh no, buckle up, especially if the lasts three to four to five seconds. is this the big one? that's the phrase that we ask ourselves in the bay area. is this the one that they're

they were scared that it would last longer. the kids' furniture shook but thankfully it was over in a matter of seconds. but that was the experience from one viewer who, again, reached out to us this morning. >> here is one from keenan ross, and this person writes, my first earthquake, and i'm at the hospital at ucsf medical center, 4th floor. my thought, omg, it's finally here. i'm from north dakotata. welcome to california. >> it's finally here. is this the big one? we never know until one date's going to happen. lena is joining us by phone calling us this morning. were you awake at the time? what did you experience? >> no, i went to bed at 9:00 p.m. and between 2:00 and 2:30, i guess it was 2:30, my whole apartment shook. and before i thought about it, i just jumped out of the bed and ran out the door.

owing this 5:45 on the clock. that breaking news story this morning, the earthquake. and now the after effects of it. we've had people wring from all corners of the bay area saying they felt it to one degree or another. the strongest sensations felt closer to the epicenter in berkeley. >> a lot of people still up. hard to fall back to sleep after that strong jolt. many people have said it is probably even stronger than the napa quake, which technically the magnitude was a little stronger. >> this one was a 4.4. but it was strong enough to activate bart's protocol where

they have to inspect all the tracks. the good news from robin, it looks like they have completed that work. >> yes, those first trains that usually depart at 4:00, they were late. they have made it to the end of the line. they are back on schedule. no more bart delays. that's one thing we can cross off the list. now driving in the rain. >> oh yeah, that's going to be a problem. >> it's always a big challenge, because of the spin-outs and the overturns. it's pretty quiet right now. i have noticed some minor crashes. i'm happy to report that i don't have any hot spots right now but it is raping and rebecca is going to be covering that. but that means you need to leave early. that means you should be driving at a reduced speed. do not forget the headlights and wipers. so many people forget. they're driving around in the rain, no lights. here's the san mateo bridge. the bay bridge, still holiday light. some of you are still out on vacation so no delays at the toll plaza. as you can seat's pretty slick

out there. so still, leave a little early if you can, under 15 minutes for the drive in. here's one crash that i'm tracking. santa cruz mountains, north 17, near the summit. maybe north of summit road which is different from the summit. eight cars blocking the right lane. so it is backing up right through the scene but the rest of the trip out of the mountains into los gatos will be fine. 101 a little busy leaving san jose. you see that little pocket between 880 and 680. that's normal. it's holiday life. 20 minutes to make from the san jose to sunnyvale. good drive times. nothing major but leave a little early because it's wet out there. with more on the wet weather here's rebecca strom. >> thank you robin. yes, i am tracking showers around the bay area. storm tracker 4 showing us where the shower activity is current falling right now. this is a nice wide shot overlooking the bay area. most of it in the north bay and our san francisco peninsula zone. east bay getting a break but of course the showers are moving

east. so we will be seeing places get hit, especially in the south bay right now, getting a nice break. also on the peninsula there they will be pushing towards the east bay. right now san francisco and getting into half moon bay. san mateo, wet conditions. moderate to light shower activity right now. so 280, 101 throughout san francisco and along the peninsula going to be affect. wet pavement. again, be very careful. the north bay looks like this. we're seeing shower activity pretty much south of petaluma rate now. we're seeing it is getting towards the golden gate bridge as well. it is going to be pushing over towards richmond. the richmond san ref fell bridge getting a -- the richmond san rafael bridge getting a dose of the wet weather. the rest of the morning is going to be shaping up. we are going to show on futurecast 4 that we are seeing

mostly scattered showers in the north bay through much of the morning. the commute today, even into the afternoon hours, getting to that 6:00 hour for tonight, we're seeing most of it north of the golden gate bridge. we are going to see scattered showers on and off. once we get into the alert part of the evening that's when we will start to see scattered showers pretty much across the bay area. overnight we are going to get hit with rain heavy at times. that's why the coloring on your screen has changed to yellow. the rain more intense with the overnight showers getting into tomorrow morning. the morning commute is going to be a wet one for sure. again we're going to have pocket of this heavy rainfall. you can see the north bay parts of the east bay by the 5:00 hour covered. most of the peninsula covered by the 5:00 hour. it is going to continue to be off and on through the entire morning commute tomorrow, and then it will get to scattered showers as we get into the afternoon. and then into tomorrow night, we're probably going to see

some scattered showers on and off into early saturday morning. and then once we get into saturday afternoon, things should finally start to dry out around the bay area. here is a quick look at rain totals on average over the last 24 hours. we're seeing the bulk of it in our south bay zone and our east bay zone. look at that, both spots almost getting an inch of rain, the lightest of which are going to be mostly in the north bay. alameda county almost a little bit over three-quarters of an inch there. but san mateo county definitely one of the heaviest with exactly three-quarters of an inch of rain. so we're looking at live conditions right now. lots of gray, cloud cover, skies that we're seeing is across the entire bay area. we are going to see that for much of the day today. temperatures not so bad. we were near the freezing level for the last couple of weeks. we're in the 50s across the bay area right now. so still dress warm but don't forget your umbrellas at home. a cooler aifn store. pretty much a carbon copy of what we experienced yesterday. 61 degrees in novato.

expect 62 in napa. san francisco topping out at 6 1. possibly upper 60s, for san jose. showers into early saturday morning are possible but then things should dry out for the rest of your weekend. we are going to see sunshine through monday, then another round of rain. it might be the heaviest so far this year coming as early as tuesday. now back to the news. james, will. >> all right, thank you very much, rebecca. our breaking news story in case you're just joining us is the 4.4 earthquake that struck at 2:39 this morning beneath berkeley. it was felt fairly widespread. everybody in the bay area, at least every portion of the bay area had somebody that reported feeling it this morning to varying degrees. we've been getting the reports a lot of them through the kron 4 mobile app. in fact, robert writes in saying i live in hayward and i was woken by what felt like something hitting my house. i thought a car hit my house.

i got up and i checked outside and there was nothing. it was that earthquake that hit berkeley this morning. >> and then channel writes, woke up to the whole house shaking. definitely felt it in martinez. >> claudia is saying my house shook. she said at first it was a rolling sensation from south to north, and then she says she felt two or three sharp jolts that kind of shook the house in that east-west direction, then it rolled directly ritt along the fault. she felt it strong enough that it felt like the whole house was shaking. >> we talked about how it was felt in santa rosa, south of santa rosa where a viewer writes, i felt the earthquake this morning, it woke me up. small shake. it lasted just a few sec. >> this is video from san leandro inside of a safe way where someone was walking around shooting video of items that fell off the shelf.

beneath the ground. it was near a hotel in the berkeley area. it could be felt as far north as santa rosa, as far south as santa cru.z we talk to the u s g 1st. they are calling this a moderate earthquake. we know it is far from over. there is a window that could happen within the next 24 hours that we could experience according to the usgs as strong, if not stronger. >> we're watching out for. that there's always the risk of aftershocks. we had one but it was only a .7, also in berkeley. too faint to be felt. you can see by the maps how far away people were reporting feeling the ground shake. it was as far south as san jose. we even add kron 4 viewer use the mobile app from santa cruz saying they felt the quake down there. and then as far north as forestville, which is actually northwest of santa rosa. we had a view, alice, who we talked to her live on the air on the phone in our 5:00 hour -- 4:00 hour, actually, and she said, yeah, the whole house shook, so it was that strong. >> and the stories rang.

( james ) breaking national news just into the kron4 newsroom. attorney general jeff sessions is going after legalized marijuana. sessions is reportedly rescinding a policy that had let legalized marijuana flourish without federal intervention across the country.an announcement is expected sometime today. the

move will leave it to u.s. attorneys where pot is legal..such as california... to decide whether to aggressively enforce federal marijuana laws. the decision comes days after california began selling recreational marijuana.sessions compares marijuana to heroin and blames it for spikes in violence. ( james ) another big story this morning.one person is dead following a police shooting near a bart station. it happened around 4-20 yesterday afternoon ... across from the west oakland bart station. that is where police say, two men got in an argument that ended in gunfire.this is video from the scene shortly after the shooting. at least one bart police officer also fired a gun ... but it is not yet clear yet why the officer did so ... or if he hit anyone. both men involved were injured with gun shots ... and taken to a local hospital. one died there and one remains in serious condition.because this happened on oakland city streets and not on bart property ... oakland police are investigating the shooting.

( will ) happening now: police are searching for a man seen in a santa hat shooting a gun in a busy san francisco intersection. it happened in the tenderloin neighborhood on eddy street near mason... this happened on christmas morning but police have just released this surveillance video showing the man walking in the tenderloin. the video shows the man stop in front of a car parked on eddy street and open fire. < our officers will also look at the video and see if it is someone they recognize and can make an arrest.any time you have someone with a gun it leads to a dangerous situation and we want to keep guns off the streets.>( will ) so far no victims have come forward and police are stll trying to figure out what shooting. ( james )in other bay area news ... the man charged with killing two women at a san francisco jewelery mart

four years ago ...will spend the rest of his life in prison. barry white junior was sentenced to three life terms and more that 200 additional years in prision. white waited until customers left the store before shooting and stabbing two women and badly injuring the store's owner. he left the store and fired at officers before surrendering when he ran out of ammunition. prosecutors say the dispute started over the price of an item that white had purchased. ( will ) an east bay mother says she feels numb... after her daughter was killed by a hit-and-run driver. now that mother is asking that driver...to come forward and turn them self in. her daughter...18-year-old chauntel rochelle... was hit at 98th avenue and sunnyside in oakland...on new years morning. police say the victim was in the crosswalk... when the dark colored sedan hit her, and kept on going. rochelle's mother...is still in disbelief.

for this highlight most of the rain fall in the north bay and afternoon hours on and off showers all day. 10:00, a couple sprinkles through the peninsula and south bay and overnight, we'll get a real bulk of heavy rain fall. a lot more widespread than what we are going to be seeing through the entire day today. so the overnight hours into friday morning, look at this, very intense at times. that's with the yellow coloring on your screen and the orange and the red coloring on your screen. that just means that a lot more heavy rain expected in the pockets so overnight going to be definitely a lot more than what we've been seeing and it'll be affecting tomorrow morning's commute and keep that in mind tomorrow. plan ahead and leave a bit early for work than normal.

we'll see scattered showers off and on through the entire morning tomorrow and even into the afternoon. things should get lighter as we get into the afternoon but then they'll continue into the latter part of tomorrow night and then like i mentioned into saturday morning we are going to see showers but then by saturday afternoon, finally we are going to see a bit of sunshine and things should finally dry out for your weekend ahead. current conditions outside right now, we're seeing gray skies, lots of cloud cover around the bay area. eastbound zone. yes, we can make out all the city lights but look how gray the skies are. temperatures not too bad right now. mostly in the 50s across the bay area. low to mid 50s for the north bay, 55 in san francisco right now, 53 in oakland and mid 50s for san jose. still 48 degrees on the board for livermore. if you're just now waking up with us, the next eight hours, here's how to plan the day.

temperatures by the 60s for the afternoon and on and off showers expected for the entire afternoon and i'll have a complete weather check through your seven-day forecast in 15 minutes or so. switch over to traffic with update with robin. wet roads not helping and new crash approaching and westbound before the may gates and a couple cars blocking tulanes of traffic, two -- two lanes of traffic and two middle lanes and once you get through that slow down, more travel on the tolls and overall a nice ride. 21 minutes to make it across and onto 101, somewhat holiday light and lot of folks have time off and not as bad as usual and bay bridge backing up in the car pool lanes on the far left hand side right here and the metering lights are still off and there's crowding there because we don't normally see that volume of traffic in the car pool lanes.

you recallly they move much -- usually they move much, much better. backing up for you car poolers but only 12 minutes for the drive in and crash in the santa cruz mountains for about an hour, northbound 17, north of summit road and may have the right lane blocked. signs have been activated too on highway 17 warning commuters that it's wet and slippery out there so heavy traffic backing up to glenwood all the way up to the scene of the crash north of summit road. leave early. the rest of the bay area doing fine. no other problems to report but don't forget the headlights and wipers and make sure you reduce speed in the wet weather. back to you. in the eastbound, a family demanding answers after their dog was attacked while at a kennel. this is a four-year-old pit bull mix named shadow dropped off in catri while family left him for new year's celebration. the owners got a call two days after the attack but was not told the severity of shadow's injuries. when they showed up, the family

. are you from california? >> i am. from the bay area. >> are you used to earthquakes or ever get used to it? >> never and always makes me think about the big one . >> a lot have been telling me that. >> a lot of fear. >> she was in a rush to go so i just stopped her really quick while walking. you were talking about the nurse, the nurse said she was at a local hospital nearby. didn't want to tell me which one but said a lot of people who were really worried and the patience woke up so all the -- patients all woke up and nurse hads to check on them but not long enough to go into protocol or do anything different if lights go out or anything.

if they do go out, generators kick on but nothing happened because it was so short but a lot of people were scared, especially those traveling nurses. people that are not from the bay area or from california were really scared and she said they went running under tables, running to doorways to try and protect themselves as well. we spoke to somebody at the safeway store here and said something fell off the shelf and told us that, you know, obviously she was scared and she said she never really gets used to any of the quakes even though she's been here all her life. a man said he was in san francisco. >> always scary and want to know if it's the big one and definitely had a lot of energy in the very beginning and then it kind of died off real fast. okay, it wasn't that bad so, you know, it was cool.

we're seeing scattered showers. mostly in the north bay right now and our san francisco peninsula zone, storm tracker 4 radar showing all the activity here so parts of 101 getting through to the golden gate bridge and san francisco. that'll be a wet ride for you right now. parts of the city also under a soaking even look at this, peninsula through pacifica right now and a lot of activity still offshore, still trying to make its way over to the bay area. now, 92 also going to be wet. i'm tracking san mateo bridge right now. getting a bit of rain fall right now. this is light to moderate so far. yes, expect the shower activity through much of the morning. we're gone ma see it even progress as we get into it. tonight, that's where we'll get another very heavy round of rain. outside right now, lots of gray skies, cloud cover we're seeing, especially with east bay camera overlooking berkeley right now. here's how your day will shape up though. here's what to expect. do not forget umbrellas at home

today. if you're maybing your way out the door any time soon, toss one in the car, you'll need it. we're seeing light scattered showers now and that's going to be the trend for the rest of the day into the afternoon. temperatures we're going to start off in the low 50s and end up to about mid 60s in some of our warmest spots inland, 50s and 60s around the bay. low 60s expected, the high today and then at the coast, upper 50s, current conditions now and things only getting to low 60s temperature wise. it'll be a bit chilly out there and a bit breezy and also of course quiet wet so be careful on the roadways and speaking of those, get a traffic update now with robin. >> all right. several trouble spots around the way area this morning. starting off with 92, your approach to the san mateo bridge. it's a little old and have not cleared the crash yet and it is blocking the left lane and putting more pressure on 92 and trying to move this after to the shoulder but you can see,

it's spilling over. that backup spilling over to the southbound area which is heavy before an after 92. get through that stretch of traffic, deal with traffic on the bridge, heavier than yesterday so some are finally returning to work after nice little vacation. 32 minutes total to make it out to 101. mostly crowded on the flat section of the bridge looking good up and over the high-rise. a slow down for you heavier than normal on 17 in the santa cruz monitans. -- mountains. one wrapping up on the shoulder at the summit and crawling from glenwood so 42 minutes pretty high to make it out of a santa cruz. bay bridge 80 west coming up next. breaking news into the kron 4 news room over the past several minutes, attorney general jeff sessions is going after legalized marijuana. he is reportedly rescinding a policy that allowed legalized marijuana to flourish without

federal intervention throughout the country. an announcement expected sometime this morning. it'll leave to u.s. attorneys where pot is legal such as our state, to decide whether to aggressively enforce federal marijuana laws. the decision comes days after our state began selling recreational marijuana. sessions compares marijuana to heroin and blames it for the spike in violence. should not have too much impact in our state but we'll monitor the situation. way too early to make any long projections based on legalized marijuana in our state. >> rob visited one south bay marijuana store where sales exceeded even their wildest expectations. >>reporter: welcome to buddy's, the long time medical marijuana collective is one of ten establishments where legal or recreational marijuana is now for sale in the city of san jose and business is booming

here says owner matt. >> i was predicting late 2017 that this was going to -- recreational cannabis would increase by about 30%. first three days it's increased by 400%. >>reporter: by the end of business today, his gross receipts at buddies estimate a quarter of a million dollars and customers wait as long as 45 minutes to put down as much as $200 for a half ounce of legal cannabis. that's a lot of tax dollars. >> we've paid the city of san jose millions of dollars in our seven year existence on 10% cannabis tax and paying the state of california the 15% tax in our 21,000 square foot building and a cultivation tax based on the weight of flowers that get produced. >>reporter: customers need only be 21 years old and present a

back. . we are back. time now 6:45. here is some of the damage from the quake. all very light. this video out of safeway where you can see a few smile items knocked off the shelf when the 4.4 earthquake struck at 2:39 this morning in berkeley. no major damage and no reports of injury. from the ground to the sky, rebecca is following the weather. yesterday no rain but today not so much. >> scattered showers around the bay area and the trend we'll see typically through the rest of today so have umbrellas handy and that's for sure. storm tracker 4 radar showing us exactly where the rain fall is happening now. we're seeing the bulk in the north bay and san francisco

peninsula zone and right now seeing it finally arrive in the east basoyou're not in the clearing just yet. some passing through hayward and 237, 885, 580 that entire corridor under wet weather conditions and moving further east. all of the rain showers heading towards your direction towards that livermore, dublin interchange where 580 and 608 connect and keep that in mind if you're making your way out the door soon. south bay, you're getting a break for now and we have showers offshore that will be heading in that direction and your san francisco peninsula and most of san francisco getting to south san francisco and airport seeing showers so 101 is going to be a bit slick through the area right now and 280.

. areas are see some of these light showers and futurecast showing us how the rest of your day is going to be shaping up and, yes, we'll see it light on and off all throughout today as with get into 8:00 hour. we're focusing on the north bay during the hours but during the overnight, we'll have another round of heavy rain tomorrow morning and starts in the south bay zone and moves upwards and move towards the east so we're going to see it more widespread

and covered once 5:00 hits tomorrow morning and the morning commute, it'll be wet at times and that's what it means to see the yellow coloring and 9:00 hour and morning commute, going to be much heavier than what we've seen today and even yesterday. then we'll see scattered showers into early saturday morning but then things finally dry out for saturday afternoon and looks like the rest of your weekend, we'll see sunshine. breezy conditions today and looking at anywhere from 5, 10, even to upwards of 12 miles an hour winds on average through most of the day today. rainy, breezy, and definitely a lot of cloud cover. dress nice and warm today. throw the umbrella in the car, have raincoat handy. you'll need it. current conditions out the door

out for your entire weekend once we get into the afternoon hours and dry conditions with mostly cloudy skies for tuesday and bigger storm system bringing more rain to the bay area as early as tuesday of next week. let's a look at weather. see how the roads are doing with robin. all right. not too bad. soggy and slippery. watch your speeds. chp dealing with a number of minor crashes there. mostly in the center divide and shoulder: nothing major and no hot spots. bay bridge 80 west into san francisco. crowded off and on on some car pool lanes but nice ride across the upper deck so only 14 minutes for average drive in. the bridge leading up to the toll bridge and no backup in about two weeks and some heading back to work. it's picking up and getting sluggish and great ride across the area. don't forget headlights and wipers out there. highway 17, heavy traffic

northbound from glenwood to the summit. accident just north of summit road and they may have left some flairs behind. the crash is out of the way but still quite slow. 42 minutes to make it into the area. leave early. that combined with wet weather off to a slow start. no other big problems but i'll check more drive times in a bit. james, back to you. spotify facing a $1.6 billion lawsuit for violating u.s. copyright laws. they claim that spotify used more than 10,000 songs without a license and those songs include tom petty's free falling and artists like the doors, neil young, and missy elliott. u.s. law requires two copyrights for every song one for the recording and one for the composition. it's seeking the maximum damages of $150,000 per song. spotify has not commented.
