(grant) the 4-point-4 magnitude quake hit at 2:40 this morning. it was centered in berkeley... along the hayward fault line. good evening, i'm grant lodes. (on cam /vicki) got the flu? you're not alone. flu season is in full swing and that is leading to restrictions on visits to at least one hospital amid a renewed call for people to get vaccinated. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, health officials are reporting a sharp increase in the flu across the south bay. the flu is out there and it's taking a toll. in santa clara county, the first flu-related death was reported on november 16. since then there have been three more. the county health department is reporting eight outbreaks of at least two or more related cases, five in the past week alone says dr. george han.dr. george han/santa clara county health dept."....right now flu season is on the upswing, were seeing sharp increases in the flu activity over the past few weeks as we expect we may be

at the peak of the season right now...."privacy laws prevent the reporting of who may have contracted the flu, the county says the number of people visiting emergency rooms for flu like symptoms is up 60-percent. the potency and spread of the flu may be related to a particular strain, h-3, which the current vaccine may not be especially effective for some people.dr george han"....flu season has come a little early this year and it's a little more severe than normal, which is actually typical of h-3, which is the flu type that is occurring this year, flu years in which the h-3 type predominates tend to be more severe...."one of those who died had not received this year's vaccine and suffered from other healthproblems that placed the person at greater risk. regardless of it's overall effectiveness,health officials say the h-3 vaccine should render the flu less severe.rob fladeboe/san jose ".....while health officials urge everyone over six months to get vaccinated, they say it's especially important for pregnant women and adults over 65 or those with chronic

health problems like heart disease or diabetes. and they say, it's not too late to get a flu shot for this current flu season. in san jose rob fladeboe kron 4 news (vicki) one hospital in santa cruz is also trying to limit exposure and prevent the flu from spreading. dignity health dominican hospital is implementing specific visitor restrictions. all visitors must be 16- years of age or older. only one visitor per patient is allowed in the hospital at a time. and all visitors must wash their hands or use hand sanitizer when entering and leaving a patient's room. hospital staff may also ask visitors to wear a mask. (vicki) the man charged with plotting to bomb pier 39 on christmas day has been indicted by a federal grand jury. according to the indictment... everitt jameson intended to use a pipe bomb to funnel people into the pier... that's where he could shoot them. the indictment replaces a criminal complaint. jameson is also charged with attempting to aid a terrorist organization and distributing information relating to destructive devices. he was arrested on december 22nd after he talking about his plans to undercover agents. (grant) a big story we are following tonight... it's been a wild week for the cannabis industry on monday it became legal to buy and sell marijuana right here in california. then today... the justice department announced that it will start enforcing federal

marijuana laws. but what exactly does that mean? kron4's washington correspondent alexandra limon reports. rep. adam schiff / california (d) and this comes from the crowd that's supposed to be in favor of state's rights.it's not often california democratic congressman adam schiff and republican colorado senator cory gardner agree but they do when it comes to the latest move by the department of justice about enforcing federal marijuana laws.senator cory gardner / colorado (r) i spoke to the attorney general today, and i told him that we will be placing holds on nominees out of the department of justice. it's unacceptable to have made this policy change in spite of the conversations he's had with me and many other members. senator gardner says he's no marijuana supporter - but respects the decision voter's made.thursday the justice department issued a memo announcing a "return to the rule of law". alexandra limon

much of the east coast is getting blanketed by snow. from virginia to maine -- more than 13 million people are under blizzard warnings.(vicki) at least 16 people have died this week -- due to the severe weather conditions. omar jimenez has more from virginia beach, virginia. a severe winter storm is pummeling the east coast - -hurling blinding snow -- flooding coastal streets --

(vicki) the severe weather throughout the midwest and east coast is impacting flights in and out of the bay area. 103 flights have been cancelled out of san francisco international airport today... and 149 have been delayed. at oakland international airport cancelled one flight. and one flight out of san jose was delayed today. the airports do note that not all of these flights and cancellations were due to the severe weather. coast that will bring more rain very soon. you can see on doppler radar a few scattered, light showers. if you're going out tonight we will still see a few scattered showers so be prepared. on the satellite you can see the storm pushing through and the next one just off the coast. clouds will be on the increase tonight with rain starting late in the north and then spreading south throughout the day. if you plan on traveling in the high country be prepared for some wintry weather. the snow level is about 7,000 feet but will be lowering to 6,000 by tomorrow. there will be a mix of rain and snow across the higher mountains if you're heading that way. it will be cooler and wet around the bay area tomorrow. highs will be in the 50s and low 60s. skies will be partly cloudy this weekend but it should be dry. a stronger storm will move in on monday to bring heavier rain and wind through tuesday before returning to dry weather on wednesday.

(vicki the trump administration took steps today to vastly expand offshore oil drilling.(grant) the plan would allow deep=sea oil rigs off the california coast as well as the atlantic, arctic and the gulf of mexico. steve aveson is here with the details.steve? (steve) the interior department says it's taking comments on the proposal for the next sixty days.as you might expect there has already been plenty of reaction from environmentalists ... not so much from the oil and gas industry. nateconomic as well as environmental concerns may limit the impact of the policy change.the trump administration wants to allow

leases on 90 percent of the offshore continental shelf.... including the first new drilling off california in three decades.deepwater wells are expensive and risky ... and as we learned from the b=p oil spill in the gulf of mexico eight years ago, potentially disastrous.nat that's why recent federal lease sales have been lukewarm in recent years.the interior department proposal also drew fire from the republican governors of florida and new jersey.senator dianne feinstein says the administration's "reckless 'drill, baby, drill' approach threatens our oceans and coasts while doing nothing to increase our energy independence.california secretary of state xavier bercerra called the idea a non starter and said state regulators will have a say in whether any offshore drilling ultimately does occur.dozens of envionmental groups have promised to work against the new oil leases, the head of baykeepers here in the bay area says she is putting her faith in te american people and congress... to hold the administration accountable for the bad decisions they are making. that is what i am hopeful for

(vicki) mark zuckerberg announced his personal challenge today and it involves fixing facebook. for 20-18....the c-e-o would like to protect users from abuse and hate online, making sure any time spent on the site is time well spent. the company faced a lot of criticism last year for it's involvement in the election and russian advertisements ....even testifying before congress. zuckerberg pledges to do a better job this year and work on fixing these important issues. (grant) for the first time ever, the dow jones industrial average closed above 25-thousand today. the climb comes after a stronger than expected jobs report. the private sector added 250-thousand jobs in december... while economists predicted a gain of 190- thousand. the current bull market is the second longest in u-s history. within that time, the dow has nearly quadrupled in value... rising from just above 64- hundred in march of 2009.

5:30... department stores across the nation are struggling to keep up with online retailers. (vicki) today-- macy's announced that it is closing even more stores. why and how this will effect you? kron four's terisa estacio joins us from stonestown galleria in san francisco... theresa - is this one of the stores closing locally? (estacio reporting live)for many bay area residnets - macy's has been the go to place for picking up a nice coat, outfit or makeup but the retailer has seen a dip in its sales.. and it is responding. they announced the closure of 100 stores.. adding more to the list, like this one here at stonestown. their local store here at the stonestown galleria is now on the chopping block. in a few days, clearance sales will start - as the process to shutter the towering building with a large amount of merchandise gets underway. sot/tc: i like it, it is too bad.in a statement, a macy's representative said, that upon review of its real estate portfolio, it decided to disclose 11 more places - bringing the total to 81 of 100 stores to eventually darken. san francisco's macy's mens store was sold awhile ago for 250 million dollars. the plan is to consolidate to the larger store across the street, but the plan right now is to keep the store open for a bit longer. sot/tc: i like it here a lot, i get stuff that i don't get at my local store. macy's says in total about 5 thousand workers will be laid off the brick and mortar cincinatti retailer has struggled in recent years seeing it's stock drop a spokesperson also added that they plan to beef up other remaining stores to continue to serve the communities. stores. they will be closed between early march and early april. in the bay area.. the sears stores in san jose and san rafael will close. liquidation sales will begin as soon as next friday at the stores. the move comes in addition to closing about 250 stores announced last year. sears has been selling off some its real estate and brands as it tries to raise cash. ( vicki ) new tonight at 5... san francisco city officials say there was a record low number of traffic deaths in 2017. they say it's proof of their "vision zero" goal,

which is to make sure there are fewer traffic deaths by the year 2024. the 20 deaths on san francisco streets last year makes it the lowest mark since 19-15. officials also say that the fatality numbers are moving in the opposite direction of national trends... which shows that traffic deaths are on the rise. san francisco police say they have emphasized traffic safety, issuing nearly 40-thousand tickets last year. (vicki) a pedestrian in san jose died after two vehicles hit him. it happened around 5 a-m near north first street and brokaw road. the first car struck the man with its side mirror-- knocking him to the ground. the victim called police from the ground to provide information about the collision when a second car hit him. the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. both drivers stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators. the identity of the victim has not been released at this time. (grant) california homeowners are struggling to

get fire insurance the state's top insurance regulator says insurers are increasingly refusing to offer people policies in areas prone to wildfires. in 2016... insurers refused to renew more than 10-thousand policies. that was up 15 percent from the prior year. there has also been an increase in people forced to turn to the state's last-resort fire insurance program that provides policies to people who can't get them from traditional insurers. officials say the problem will get worse as insurers consider more houses to be in high risk areas...following last year's north bay firestorm and fires in southern california. (grant) president trump invited republican lawmakers to the white house today to talk about the next steps on immigration. the president says he wants to strengthen border security. but democrats say they aren't on board unless the plan includes a replacement for daca. that's the program that allows young undocumented immigrants

who arrived in the us as children to avoid deportation. that program is set to expire in march. the white house says president trump plans to sit down with senate democrats next week. 500 kids in china between nine and 11 years old. at age 12 the kids would complete an i-q test. researchers say kids who ate fish weekly scored higher than those who seldom or never ate fish. the study also found that sleep quality got better. (grant) the researcher recommended introducing fish to a child's diet early on... they say as long as there are no bones and it has been finely chopped ... kids as young as 2 can eat it. (grant) in the east bay... police are looking for a burglar who hit an officer with his car. police responded to a report of home burglary around 5-thirty last night at montevino drive in pleasanton. when they arrived-- the suspect fled in a grey honda accord. shortly after... another officer spotted the suspect's car on the same road. the officer got out of his vehicle

and attempted to stop him. the man then allegedly drove directly at the officer--hit him--then fled. the officer was taken to the hospital and discharged this morning. anyone with information is asked to call police. (vicki) an east bay family is calling this suspected package thief the "cookie monster" and they are hoping that this surveillance video leads to him being caught kron4's charles clifford reports from oakland.. around 222 tuesday morning, this man appeared on the front porch of the home of ilana pearlman and seth engel. he's outside their door for less than a minute. after looking around he takes two packages that were sitting on the steps and pulls all the mail out of the mailbox and then leaves. the whole encounter was captures on video and ilana and seth watched it the next morning.soti felt violated.sot i thought it was creepy. that someoneone of the boxes the man takes was full of holiday cookies that ilana's

(pam) new at six... two men are in custody after police say, one of them tried to sexually assault a girl in rohnert park..(fsc) it happened just before four- this morning. police say, a man -- identified as noah holland -- broke into the home, took off his clothes and got into the girls bed. that is when the girl woke up and screamed. police say, holland ran from the home ... leaving his clothes behind. investigators saw holland a short distance from the home and arrested him. he is facing a string of charges ..... including lewd acts with a child and burglary. authorites believe holland used a garage opener in an unlocked car to get into the home. police also arrested tristan ford. they say, ford knew that holland was trying to assault the girl. he is facing charges.. including conspiracy. man charged with the attempted murder of an armored truck guard last year has been found guilty. ivan morales has been convicted of robbery, assault and personal discharge of a firearm charges. morales and another man followed an armored car to a bank. that's where they held up the guard, stole money and shot the guard in the head. morales drove to calistoga after the alleged robbery... leading nearly 200 law enforcement officers were led on a four hour chase. he was later found hiding in a culvert and arrested.
