swamt and we plash back to the stars' first time. >> i'm nervous and i'm falling apart, but it's all right. this is "entertainment tonight." is matt lauer meddling with the "today" show after being fired? that is what a new report says and we are getting to the bottom of it? >> how are things going behind the scenes? have they moved on since the stunning announcement of lauer's removal and is the show actually better off without him. >> it is happening in the northeast. >> the winter storm topped the "today" show, but behind the scenes, "e.t." has learned the forecast without matt lauer is sunny and warm. a nbc source says the staff is in a great place right now and now cohost hoda kotb is actually preferred to matt lauer. she's warm, her personality is the opposite of matt. meanwhile, there's a new report out that lauer still watches the show and has been texting

critiques to producers. but an nbc source tells us, quote, that report is not accurate. nbc isn't commenting on the story, but it's clear lauer remains friendly with some former colleagues. on tuesday we talked to the new anchor team. >> of course we keep in touch. you know, matt is our good friend and continues to be, and i think for both of us we've just been trying to navigate this time. >> so what's life like for lauer after "today"? well, the former anchor has retreated to the hamptons where east been frequently seen with his wife and daughter at their 40-acre horse farm. >> his heart and his focus is on his family. >> yes. >> and we're learning new details about what happened before the ladies broke to news that matt had been fired. they tell "people" magazine, out friday, it was a difficult, emotional day. >> we said a prayer. >> we held hands in her office and said a prayer, and i said to savannah after that prayer, we're going to make it through this together. it wasn't in our hands anymore. it was in god's hands.
