downloading and using the kron4 mobile app. ( marty ) a big story we're following this morning ... a woman suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs is in jail. the chp says she crashed into oncoming traffic on highway 4 saturday morning. kron4 's ella sogomonian reports four people were sent to the hospital with injuries. four people were sent to a hospital, some with major injuries, after a car drivng 100 miles per hour rolled into oncoming traffic headed north on highway 242 just before eastbound highway 4 at 11 saturday morning.35-year-old jayme lambert of martinez was arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs.california highway patrol officers say smoking pot is now legal but not much has changed with how they determine if someone is high. sot: timothy clay, east bay driver // "but it's kind of hard to determine who's high and who's not. because someone could be coming back from work

and be tired. but they need more equipment to tell who's high and who's not."chp officers tell kron 4 the driver may admit to having used drugs before getting in the car.but if they don't fess upits up to the officer to decide on the spot.they have the driver do a series of field sobriety tests then use their training to spot or smell anything that may give away the driver is high.like droopy eyelids and a greenish white film on the tongue.a blood test is later drawn but results take more than a week so an officer has to decide whether to make the arrest before that hard evidence comes back.sot: courtney miles, east bay driver// "that's a hard one, it really is because you can't say for sure whether they smoked at that time or not. it could be in forever so, but i hope when they go to court that day there will be a blood test to show if they had it in their system." the freeway was shut down for an hour and 20 minutes investigation. ( marty ) the state of california is pulling ads aimed at discouraging driving high after critics say it ápromotedá marijuana use. the majority of the ad featured people talking about why they use marijuana. it closed with them saying they never drive while high...

and "d-u-i doesn't just mean booze." traffic safety officials are concerned with certain elements of the ad. it's set to be replaced with a different one produced last year that warns smoking pot, can result in charges for d-u-i. ( marty ) three s-f-p-d officers are recovering ... after two seperate car accidents. the first one happened around 8:45 yesterday morning ... two officers in the patrol car were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. the driver of the other car... was treated with minor injuries at the scene... a third officer ... crashed with another car on third street and geary. the driver and officer were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. police are looking into the cause of both accidents. ( marty ) the c-h-p is looking into the cause of a fatal accident in the north bay a man is dead after driving his car off highway 101 and crashing into a tree in santa rosa. it happened yesterday afternoon. authorities say the car ran off the road and hit a redwood tree. a 58-year ukiah man

was at the heart of a town hall meeting held in bay point. this after machinists recently settled a labor dispute with an industrial plant. kron four's philippe djegal explains why labor leaders say those who work at refineries deserve more protection. (philippe) more than 80 machinists who walked off the job and stayed on strike for two-months at henkel aerospace industrial in bay point -- are back on the job... two weeks ago, they resolved their issues over pay, safety and training with the germany- based company steve older is the area director for the union that represents the workers -- machinists automotive trades.steve older/organizer- "one of the main things that we're really proud of is that we got some, um, a worker's safety committee put into the contract that will have some oversight by federal mediation for a while." older is also president of the contra costa labor council. on saturday, he sat on a panel at the ambrose community center in bay point... joined by environmental justice

organizers and state leaders, including congressman mark desaulnier (de-sohn-yay)... who sponsored the industrial safety ordinance in contra costa county back in the 1990s as a member of the board of supervisors. the ordinance requires refineries to submit safety plans and conduct audits of the plans and inspections of industrial plants.mark desaulnier/con gressman- "you have to make sure that the capital investment is still there, um, so they're using what's called best available technology, uh, which is a requirement in california. um, but then, the other side is to ensure that the workforce is well-educated and constantly trained on worker's safety." however, the industrial safety ordinance currently applies only to nine facilities in unincorporated contra costa county and the city of richmond. henkel was not one of them. neither is the benicia refinery, which experienced a toxic flaring incident last may.andres soto/organizer- "in the city of benicia, we're actually promoting that right now and trying to get the city council to adopt one." in the latest numbers available... the u-s bureau of labor statistics says in 20-16... there was a seven-percent

( marty ) a florida man is in jail after he called police on himself. officers say michael lester admitted to drunk driving and swallowing meth. he was driving on the wrong side of the road in a suburb of tampa. here's some of his 9-1-1 call. ( marty ) the 20-18 winter olympics is just a month away... and a bay area figure skater will be making her way to south korea in pursuit of a gold medal. karen chen of fremont secured third place at the national championships in san jose to advance to the olympics. but, it wasn't an easy road to victory. olympic officials say the 18-year-old has been battling foot and hip injuries since last year and overcame flu- like symptoms to win a spot on the olympic team. ( marty ) a man who escaped from a hawaii psychiatric hospital and flew to san jose is awaiting extradition. randall saito is still expected to be sent back to hawaii by the u-s marshal's service. the timing of the flight will not be made public for security reasons. a california judge extended the time that saito can be held in the state to january 29th. saito

walked out of the hawaii state hospital in november, took a taxi to the airport, and boarded a plane to san jose. police arrested him in stockton, three days later. ( marty ) coughing, fever and just feeling miserable. if you are not sick, then you might know someone who is. because this flu season in the bay area is off to a fast start. sot the flu is unpredictable dr. louise mcnitt of contra costa county health services tells methe 4 people who died from the flu in the county between october and jaunary 4th, were between 50 and 64 years of old, and had underlining health conditions. though, many people are feeling that stuffy, sweaty, over-all sick feeling this years flu viruis is a nasty one.sot we have certainly seen in the last few days a rapid increase in the number of people who are sicknats washing hands..health officials want people to protect themselves from getting ill.by washing hands. throwing away used tissues.nat coughsand cough in your arm,

was called in for an address here along grove way in castro valley. fortunately, the alameda county sheriff's office was one step ahead of the prankster."the call came in on thursday night.alameda county sheriff's officials say a man claimed he would use an assault rifle to kill his three hostages if he didn't get 15-thousand dollars."you got the whole town turned upside down for a phone call, you know what i mean? so i definitely think they should look into it before they send the whole cavalry."it's a very serious claim, and of course law enforcement responded.but they ádid look at the case closely, and deputies realized they were headed to an address where similar demands had been made before.without actually deploying a swat team, they figured out that the previous resident of the home was the target of swatting.they say it likely came from online gaming, where people often use the hoax as payback for other players.some neighbors on the street have seen that type of behavior from online gamers before."just like when they don't get what they want, you know - have a little hissy fit and they'll swear and they'll yell at the other guy through

( marty ) workers at the mandalay bay resort and casino had contact with las vegas shooter stephen paddock in the days leading up to the mass shooting. 58 people were killed when paddock opened fire on the crowd at a country music festival in october. room service and housekeeping interacted with him or entered his suite more than 10 times, according to a statement from m-g-m resorts. housekeepers said they saw no signs of anything suspicious in the suite. coming up...

commander, john young has died. nasa says young died after complications from pneumonia on friday. young was one of the nation's most experienced astronauts, who walked on the moon during the apollo-16 mission in 19-72. he was also the first american to fly to space six times, taking part in nasa's gemini, apollo and space shuttle programs. nasa called him a pioneer whose career spanned three generations of spaceflight. john young was 87. ( marty ) comedy fans are also saying goodbye to actor, jerry van dyke. he was best known for playing the assistant coach on the hit series "coach". the show aired in the 19-80's and 90's. his wife, said he died in arkansas of heart failure on friday. according to her, van dyke was never able to make a full recovery from a major car accident two-and-a-half years ago.

in virgina, a hero came to the rescue of dog that had fallen through an ice covered pond. while people waited for animal control, one man jumped into action. he used his ladder and a neighbor's kayak to rescue the dog, named atlas, from the frigid water. anthony miller said when he touched the dog, he felt like a block of frozen ice. and he didnt hesitate to help. ( marty ) at first the dog's body temperature was so low it did not register on the vet's thermometer. however, thanks to miller's the quick actions, along with first responders and vets, atlas is expected to make a full recovery. ( marty ) everyone wants to be number one. but not as much as millennials. a new study finds millennials strive to be perfect compared to previous generations. but that desire to be flawless could be damaging to their mental helath. researchers found millennials put unrealstic expections on themselves and others in all aspects of their lives. many compete with one another to meet social pressures to be successful. the report says social media is a big factor in this drive to be perfect because many millennials are comparing themselves to others. researchers found many more millennials are seeking mental health treatment to help them combat their issues. ( marty ) marijuana may be useful in fighting america's opiod crisis. a study examined the link between colorado's legalization of recreational marijuana and opioid-related deaths. according to the study... opioid abuse and deaths were reduced by more than five percent after legalizing recreational cannabis.

the heart of a town hall meeting held in bay point. this after machinists recently settled a labor dispute with an industrial plant. kron four's philippe djegal explains why labor leaders say those who work at refineries deserve more protection. (philippe) more than 80 machinists who walked off the job and stayed on strike for two-months at henkel aerospace industrial in bay point -- are back on the job... two weeks ago, they resolved their issues over pay, safety and training with the germany- based company steve older is the area director for the union that represents the workers -- machinists automotive trades.steve older/organizer- "one of the main things that we're really

proud of is that we got some, um, a worker's safety committee put into the contract that will have some oversight by federal mediation for a while." older is also president of the contra costa labor council. on saturday, he sat on a panel at the ambrose community center in bay point... joined by environmental justice organizers and state leaders, including congressman mark desaulnier (de-sohn-yay)... who sponsored the industrial safety ordinance in contra costa county back in the 1990s as a member of the board of supervisors. the ordinance requires refineries to submit safety plans and conduct audits of the plans and inspections of industrial plants.mark desaulnier/con gressman- "you have to make sure that the capital investment is still there, um, so they're using what's called best available technology, uh, which is a requirement in california. um, but then, the other side is to ensure that the workforce is well-educated and constantly trained on worker's safety." however,

hawaii psychiatric hospital and flew to san jose is awaiting extradition. randall saito is still expected to be sent back to hawaii by the u-s marshal's service. the timing of the flight will not be made public for security reasons. a california judge extended the time that saito can be held in the state to january 29th. saito walked out of the hawaii state hospital in november, took a taxi to the airport, and boarded a plane to san jose. police arrested him in stockton, three days later. ( marty ) comedy fans are also saying goodbye to actor, jerry van dyke. he was best known for playing the assistant coach on the hit series "coach". the show aired in the 19-80's and 90's. his wife, said he died in arkansas of heart failure on friday. according to her, van dyke was never able to make a full recovery from a major car accident two-and-a-half years ago. he also made appearances on "the dick van dyke show", a classic sitcom starrring jerry's older brother. jerry van dyke was 86-years old. ( marty ) the freezing weather in the east is prompting officials to remind people to stay indoors and off of frozen lakes and rivers. in virgina, a hero came to the rescue of dog that had fallen through an ice covered pond. while people waited for animal control, one man jumped into action. he used his ladder and a neighbor's kayak to rescue the dog, named atlas, from the frigid water. anthony miller said when he touched the dog, he felt like a block of frozen ice. and he didnt hesitate to ( marty ) at first the dog's body temperature was so low it did not register on the vet's thermometer. however, thanks to miller's the quick actions, along with first responders and vets, atlas is expected to make a full recovery.
