deceased - a boulder from a hillside made unstable from the atlas fire back in the fall appears to be the cause of the accident. all of a sudden it dislodged and collided with the car. all of this on 121 in napa county. caltrans shut down the road immediately.13:05 our heartfelt condolences to the victims family we had geologists out there this morning, checking hills.vince jacala is a caltrans spokesperson, he shared with kron four - these pictures take by caltrans - of the accident. jacala says it is a new reality out on the roads since the wildfires ravaged the north bay.jacala. we have been working ever since the fires to remove dead trees, reseed look for rocks, obviously with this this morning, we need to do more and make it safe for everyone. the accident happened tuesday night, around 5pm but it was so dark and so dangerous, once crews realized they could not save the driver, and it was too unsafe to bring the car up, they shut down this stretch of 121 all night and until wednesday afternoon. jacala. we can't do enough right now. take a look at this this mini mountain of straw wattles stablizing areas impacted by the fire, a major concern. starting wednesday napa county's office of emergency services set up this site by the napa valley expo to offer free erosion control wattles and stakes to try and block ash and toxic chemicals from running down into fragile water shed. jacala says it is a team

(rob live) of the seven flu related deaths reported so far in the greater bay area, five of them have occurred here in santa clara county. health officials announcing outside the emergency room here this afternoon that the flu is exploding in what is likely to be one of the worst flu seasons in many years. here's more. in the past ten days, there has been a 5 fold increase in the number of people with flu- like symptoms seeking care at emergency rooms like this one here at valley medical center. the county ems is reporting a sharp increase in the number of calls for an ambulance and transport to one of those emergency rooms. the flu is more severe this year and it is spreading fast. there are

five new outbreaks, bringing to 13, the number of outbreaks of at least two or more diagnosed cases, most at long term care facilities in the county. in an effort curb the spread of the flu, valley med has joined several other area hospitals in restricting and screening visitors, many of whom are wearing masks to guard against being exposed or possibly exposing others. details about the latest flu related death were announced by assistant county health officer dr. george han.dr. george han/santa clara county health dept."...this person did not receive the flu vaccine similar to the other four who have died so far this flu season, in addition this person did not have any underlying health problems while the other four people who passed away did have some other health problems..."...we would like to emphasize that it's not too late to get a flu shot and to wash their hands frequently, cover their coughs and stay home if they're sick..."

(grant) immigration enforcement officers are cracking down on 7-eleven stores... and some are right here in the bay area. today--- u-s- immigration and customs enforcement agents descended on nearly one- hundre... 7-eleven stores across the nation. ice was targeting people who hire undocumented workers. 21 people suspected of being illegal immigrants were arrested. here in the bay area... stores in santa clara, santa rosa, petaluma, suisun city, napa, and north sebastopol were all part of the audit. piseth chhay . the 48-year- old was last seen on mother's day of last year. then in june... police dogs found human remains at the hayward warehouse where chhay used to work. late last night... kron 4 received a message from his family confirming that d-n-a results proved the remains were chhay's. shortly after chhay went missing... police identified one of his friends... bob tang... as a person of interest in the case. so far no arrests have been made. ( vicki ) police in oakland have identified the bart police officer who shot a suspect to death near the west oakland station last week. they say it's officer joseph mateu. this is the firearm recovered from the scene. police say the incident began when the officer heard a shooting take place near the intersection of seventh and chester streets. he saw two men fighting, one of them with a handgun. police say after giving several commands, mateu opened fire.. striking 28-year-old shaleem tindle. tindle was taken to a hospital and later died. mateu is on paid leave pending investigation. a man is injured after being hit by an amtrak train in emeryville today. it happened around 6:40 this morning near powell street and the emeryville amtrak station. authorities say the man was walking near the station when it happened. police say the man was knocked to the ground. he it is expected to be survive. (grant) a second person was hit by an amtrak train in richmond today... this one fatal. it happened around four this morning on the union pacific line at 22nd street... that's near the intersection of broadway and carlson boulevard. officers recovered the body. union pacific is conducting the investigation. (grant) living in the bay area just took another step closer to being more expensive, but possibly easier to navigate.(vicki) a committee of the bay area toll authority just passed a resolution on to the full board... that would put a measure on the june ballot that could raise almost all bay area bridge tolls by three dollars.(grant)kron4's maureen kelly explains what the money is going towards. voters could soon decide if

commuters will have to start coughing up more money...if they want to cross all of the bay area bridges, except the golden gate. but as painful as that could be to the pocketbook....those who support the idea says that extra money will finance billions of dollars of transportation projects that will ease gridlock. nobody likes higher bridge tolls of course not but nobody likes sitting in congestion either the bay area toll authority will vote on january 24th on whether to put what will be called regional measure three on the june ballot. the bay area council will then start campaigning for it to pass. it'll add more vehicles to bart it would double the size of the ferry system. it'll improve highways and bridges and bus transitif passed by a majority of voters from all 9 counties the toll hikes would be implemented in phases. the cost to cross bay area state run bridges would be raised by $1 dollar in 2019, go up another buck in 2022, and then

up another dollar in 2025.... (standup)which means in seven years it could cost 9 bucks to cross the bay bridge during peak commute times, and cost 8 bucks on the other six bridges. the mtc says their polling data shows most voters would pass the measure. but nearly all the drivers i talked to at his gas station in san francisco's south of market were firmly against the idea. i'm gonna vote no on that. people should think about it and lowing come people the people who have small kids we need to help the people you know it's all just more gentrification push and poor people out and making it a playground for the rich it's just too expensive you know, some people have to commute back-and-forth every day every day just to work it's just too much the proposed toll hike would give a to those with commute, and car poolers would cap out at 4 bucks a maureen kelly kron4 news. ( grant ) governer jerry brown has proposed a 132 million dollar budget for california as he begins his final year in office. that's a five percent increase from last year's budget. this all comes as the governer is warning of a recession.

governor brown says there have been 10 recessions since world war two and that california should prepare for the 11th. the budget avoids new spending, putting five billion in surplus money into the state's rainy day fund. the budget also proposes a new online community college. this is the first stage of a months-long process. (grant) congressman darrell issa announced he will retire at the end of his term. the california republican is bowing out of what would have been one of the nation's most hotly-contested congressional races. issa nearly lost his seat in 20-16 -- narrowly defeating democrat douglas applegate by less than one percentage point. his district is one of seven republican-held districts that hillary clinton won in california. (vicki) a mountain lion cub found starving and dehydrated in el dorado county last month will now call the oakland zoo home.(grant) zoo staff thinks she is about ten weeks old. the un- named cub joins two male mountain lion cubs at the zoo... both about five months old. the two male cats were brought to the zoo from southern california...after their mother was killed by a car. 5:30... thousands of dollars worth of very expensive hand bags were stolen from a high-end retailer on the peninsula (grant) now-- police are looking for a group of people who rushed into the store and ran back out with their arms full of purses... kron4's haaziq madyun reports. you are doing some shopping just before closing time at this nordstrom department store when suddenly a group of theives run into the store and head for the high-end hand bag sectionsot the nordstrom is located at the stanford shopping center in palo alto. that is where palo alto police investigators say monday night 4-men and 3-women used wire cutters to gain access to 49-purses and handbags with an estimated value of $100-thousand dollars. the theives targeted purses made buy gucci. as you can see on nordstrom's website some gucci hand bags cost as much as 19-hundred-dollars

it happened earlier this month. police say one person was pistol whipped near the area where delivery trucks pull up to the loading docks. it's not clear what was taken... but the robber got away. he is still on the loose tonight. police say armed robberies in broad daylight are not common in the area. (grant) in the south bay... we are learning new information tonight about what caused a police officer to shoot a man at a san jose energy plant. it started at the metcalf energy center around five last night. police say an employee reported seeing a suspicious man carrying a large pipe and an ax. officers found the man... but he rportedly refused to surrender and walked away. the man then told police to shoot him.. and he allegedly started walking towards the officers. police say they ordered the man to put down his weapons multiple times... but he refused... causing officers to open fire. the man was pronounced dead at the scene. crime was in santa rosa last night at harry's market on west ninth street near north dutton avenue. the armed gunman entered the store shortly before midnight demanding money. when the clerk couldn't open the cash drawer, the suspect fired a shot in the store... then ran away. authorities describe him as a hispanic male, about five feet seven inches tall with a thin build. he was last seen wearing a black ski mask, black jacket and pants with white shoes. council members have passed a multi-million dollar program to reduce gun violence in stockton. the program is called advance peace. city officials say they will provide training and pay suspected attackers to put down their weapons. the program lasts 18 months and participants can make up to a thousand dollars if they achieve benchmarks and keep up good behavior. gun violence claimed 55 lives in stockton in 2017. that's the highest the number has been since 2012. oregon is under fire for allowing teachers to display rainbow flags in their classrooms.
