17 people were killed this week in the santa barbara county mudslides. as john lorince reports ... that number could increase over the next few days ... as the search for missing people continues. rescue teams and cadaver dogs dig through knee-deep mud looking for people who haven't been seen in days.authorities confirm at least 17-people were killed by the storm. sheriff bill brown/santa barbara county sheriff "jonathan benitez, 10 years old. caylee benitez, 3 years old. martin cabrera munoz, 48 years old..."montecito resident curt pickering lost two friends.curt pickering/montecito resident "josie gower is one and rebecca riskin and their bodies were found down, you know, down at the 101 from glen oaks 192, so that's almost two miles. so it's real sad, more so when you know these people."the areas

where the victims were found remain under mandatory evacuation.on thursday the sheriff's office said 48 people were missing but later revised that number to eight -- but say as many as 43 could still be unaccounted for.these deadly mudslides came after the thomas fire -- the largest in state history.heavy rains triggered mudslides in scorched areas, stripped of vegetation.the torrential rains were felt across southern california -- even in burbank where a mudflow pushed this car down a street.the two people inside were able to eventually gain control of the car and escaped without injury. but some californians fear there could be more storms like this in the future.cecil kyte/california resident"could it be 3, 4 more? if you look at the hills up here, everything's exposed and i would ask people to prepare themselves for a winter of similar proportions if we continue to get rain like this."i'm john lorinc reporting. resumed service across parts of southern california.the deadly mudslides in ventura and santa barbara counties forced the amtrak pacific surfliner tracks to close earlier this week.amtrak says they expect high demands for the service since highway 101 is expected to stay closed through monday. ( james ) in napa county ... the sheriff's department has identified the driver who was killed in a rockslide on highway 121. 22-year-old hernan reyes-aguires lived in fairfield. he was on his way home from visiting family in napa when a giant rock knocked his car off a cliff. officials in napa county are now stepping up efforts to prevent more mud and rockslides from happening. the napa county office of emergency services has teamed up with a company to provide free straw wattles and wooden stakes to people in areas damaged by last october's fire storm. they are meant to prevent erosion. and caltrans says they will now double their efforts to make sure hillsides are safe all across napa county. ( james )two armed robbers target a man who was getting out of his car in the east bay.

berkeley police are hoping surveillance video will lead to an arrest ... after he was robbed and shot. kron 4's ali reid spoke with the victim in the attack. only when i see the video i realize i could have been killedchilling surveillance footage shows the victim getting his backpack from the backseat of his car and within seconds, thieves were on him. my very first thought is that i have to hold it tightwe will not be showing the victim's face in order to protect his identity. the u-c berkeley ph-d student says his laptop and dissertation were inside the bag. a struggle ensued. one of the suspects fired a shot, threw him to the ground and dragged him. he dragged me across the curb then fired a 2nd and 3rd shotafter the 2nd shot rang out, the international student decided to let go, remembering he had his dissertation backed up. shot once in the thigh, he says everything happened extremely fast. he never saw

his attackers and wouldn't be able to identify them.i would only assume that the person is larger than mesurveillance cameras at a nearby building captured the mugging, but images aren't very clear. right now, the berkeley resident is happy to be alive. they had chances to aim at my head and pull the trigger, but for those 3 shots only one bullet hit me and i recover pretty well.the victim still has bruising on his side after being dragged on the ground. and his mobility is still not back to normal.he did however, graduate with his p-h-d 10 days after being assaulted.as for the suspects, police are urging . if these men look familiar call 9-11ali reid kron 4 news. ( james )(áááboxesááá) a former coroner in the north bay pled guilty to committing a lewd act with a minor. darrell harris pled guilty to one felony charge at a preliminary hearing this morning. he was charged with several different child sex crimes dating back to 2008

... and continuing until earler this year. harris faces five years of probation and up to one year in the marin county jail. he must also register as a convicted sex offender. the 47-year- old from san rafael had worked in the marin county coroner's office for 15 years. ( james ) happening now... leaders on capitol hill are trying to strike a deal on immigration... just days before a potential government shutdown. but a vulgar remark from president trump is jeopardizing those talks. while a group of bipartisan senators pitched a compromise on immigration... a source briefed on the meeting says the president grew frustrated and asked lawmakers quote: "why do we want all these people from expletive countries coming here?" he also said the u-s should bring in more people from countries like norway.

making it very difficult for anybody to be able to reach an agreement with him.>( james ) the president rejected the immigration proposal-- that protected undocumented young people and increased border security. the government set to run out of funding on january 19th -- and the uncertain future of these so called dreamers a major roadblock in negotiations. ( james )a complaint leads to the seizure of nearly 50-mixed breed chihuahuas from an east bay pet shop. however the owner of the pet shop says animal services had no right to take her dogs away and filed a complaint of her own. kron4's haaziq madyun this administrative search and seizure warrant was executed by oakland animial services wednesday here at rosie's enterprise pet shop on bancroft avenue in east oakland...they were looking for dogssot

( james ) for the fourth time in less than a month --- a sea lion has attacked a swimmer in the san francisco bay.we first reported this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news. this is spurring concern about whether it is safe to swim at aquatic park and also why these attacks keep happening. kron 4's dan kerman has that part of the story. pkga sea lion attack in the cove at aquatic park thursday morning was not going to stop

people from swimming thursday after worksot kevin whalen/swimmer 07-12not concerned, going out with a couple of my buddies so i feel like i will be safethursday mornings incident was the first time a swimmer was bitten this month, but there were three incidents last month prompting officials to shutdown the cove for 5 days this time though the cove remains open with these warning signs posted.sot lynn cullivan/s.f. maritime national historical park 28-37 we are asking folks to consider swimming closer to the shore, perhaps swimming in a group instead of solo and just be careful and stay away from marine mammals.as for why the sea lions are attacking, experts say it could be because people are getting too close and the sea lions feel threatenedsot dr. cara field/ vet, marine mammal center 47-57 sea lions are intelligent and curious animals so a sea lion might approach out of curiousity, sometimes the animals might be feeling defensive if they have an injury, a wound or some disease, so they might feel more defensive and feel like they are protecting themselves. experts says what those swimming here should remember

(james) in the south bay -- we are now learning about another dog that had to be hospitalized after coming down with the "dog flu." kron4 visited the cambell vet hospital on tuesday -- and they're now telling us that another dog, a basset hound, required hospitalization after contracting the virus. dog flu causes coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, decreased apetite ... and is highly contagious. vets at the hospital are concerned the flu will spread throughout the south bay. however -- there is a dog flu vaccine that the clinic reccomends all dog owners get for their pets. ( james ) in a sign of the times, the last video rental store in contra costa county is going out of business. "take on video" in

(james) voters in the south bay might decide whether an embattled judge should stay on the bench. superior court judge aaron persky is the target of a recall, he sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner, convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman after a campus party, to six months in jail. angry with the leniency of the sentence ... recall organizers spent months collecting over

100-thousand signatures on a petition asking to recall judge persky. >( james ) the recall effort submitted 100- thousand signatures. if the registrar determines that 58-thousand are valid, the recall will qualify for the fall ballot. (james) santa clara district attorney jeff rosen could be out of office in the near future. his exit is pending resolution of pleading

guilty to bribery ... conspiracy to commit fraud...obstruction of justice ... and denial of due process. a formal complaint was filed by a gilbert marosi in which he listed the previously named allegations ... asked d-a rosen to compel fidelity to pay his 9 point 95 million dollar claim ... and if done ... marosi would drop all charges. rosen ignored the request and now awaits the investigation findings. (james)for the fourth time this week ... a coffee shop has been targeted by robbers. its a crime trend that's been plaguing east bay communities. take a look at the latest incidents. hercules, fremont, and now concord have been hit by thieves going after coffee shop patrons. on monday -- one victim was pistol whipped inside a starbucks on willow avenue. then on tuesday ---there were two separate robberies in fremont. in one of them ... a woman had her laptop stolen from right in front of her.then on wednesday evening... a man sitting inside a concord starbucks was robbed. when his laptop was also snatched from in front of him. police say

they are waiting to review surveillance video. (james) santa cruz police need your help looking for a man who robbed a bank. it happened at the u-s bank on morrissey boulevard near soquel avenue in santa cruz. this is an image of the robber from surveillance video. the suspect had a gun and demanded money from the tellers.the robber ran towards the parking lot with an undisclosed amount of cas. police followed a couple of leads but were unable to find him. (james) petaluma police are searching for a woman suspected of stealing credit cards during two weddings. according to police ... they received a report of a stolen wallet on january 2nd at saint vincent de paul church. the victim said, she left her purse in a backroom during the ceremony... and when she returned to the room afterwards ... her wallet was missing and she later found out, her credit cards had been used. a similar theft was reported around 4- in the afternoon last saturday. police released a photograph of the suspect ... using one of the victim's credit cards

( james )(áááboxesááá) one couple's oceanview dream house had to be leveled after being undermined by erosion. the house was yellow- tagged back in january of 2016 ... after rain and waves had worn away the cliff where it sits. kron4's maureen kelly spoke with the owners ... dealing with losing their dream home. the 69 year old house went down surprisingly quickly.... it's redwood and plaster broken up into bits with the merciless claw of an escavator. the house had managed to stay standing after the 1998 el

nino storms sent another neighboring cliffside home on this block crashing to the beach below....and resulted in several others on this stretch to be torn down. but another monster el nino during the winter of 2015-2016 ate away what was left of its yard and undermined the foundation. they won't let you stay in a house that you can see the ocean when you look out down at the windowmelissa mcconnel wore all black as she documented the death of her dreamhouse. she and her husband bought it in 2009 and spent 7 years remodeling it themselves. they had just begun moving in, when the house was yellowtagged. they did what they could to save it....here's video from the spring of 2016 when they had it pulled forward to a safer position on the cliff and put up on blocks as they tried to find another lot they could move it to. we had lots near mitts misses the latest of which was april of last year but it wasn't meant to be i guessnot sure of how many winters the home could safely withstand, the the city of pacifica used a hazard mitigation grant to purchase it from owners. once cleared the land will become part of the esplanade overview trail...melissa and her husband say they plan to come back and visit. it was wonderful to actually be here and see it every morning. and every sunset and all that. but the beach isn't going anywhere. the ocean is it going anywherethe couple who now lives in the east bay, say they plan to start over and are now looking for another pacifica dream house for their next move. maureen kelly kron4 news.

( james ) the raiders might have to pay a big fine for hiring jon gruden the n-f-l is looking into whether they violated the rooney rule. this development comes after the fritz pollard alliance ... a group that promotes diversity in front offices and coaching staffs ... asked the league to investigate wheter the raiders reached an agreement with gruden before interviewing minority candidates. during gruden's introductory press conference, owner mark davis said they came to an agreement on christmas eve ... a week before firing jack del rio or interview a minority candidate. the last team to violate this rule were the detrot lions in 2003. former lions general manager, matt millen was fined 200- thousand dollar for hiring steve ( james ) coming up on the kron four morning news...

the video of a mudflow down in burbank. you can see the muddy waters... so powerful... they push a car right down the road. the video was taken by burbank firefighters. they posted it to instagram writing -- "urban prius bobsledding in burbank!" the driver and his girlfriend say it was a very scary situation. but driver was able to maneuver the car away safely. no one was hurt. ( darya ) the d-m-v is working on a fire recovery operation to remove fire- damaged vehicles in santa rosa. with support from the state and local law enforcement agencies. the department is working to identify damaged cars and process the necessary paperwork for removal. the goal of the operation is to keep debris cleanup on track. the removal will continue for the next several days. ( darya ) in the east bay... there are new efforts to solve the murder of a 16-year-old hayward high school student. a 10- thousand dollar reward is now being offered for information on the murder of lamar murphy. lamar was was shot and killed almost one year ago on princeton street and smalley avenue in hayward. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out this poster asking anyone with information to come forward.

( darya ) two armed robbers shot a student who was getting out of his car in berkeley... and a surveillance camera caught the whole thing. now... we're hearing from the victim. the u-c berkeley student was getting his backpack out of his car when the thieves approached him. he says his laptop and dissertation were inside the bag. a struggle ensued... and one of the suspects fired a shot... threw him to the ground.... and dragged him. we first showed this video yesterday morning. after a second and third shot...the international student let go of the bag. but... he was hit by one bullet in the thigh. ( darya ) the victim said he felt

lucky only one of the bullets hit him. he graduated with his p-h-d just 10 days after the robbery. police are still looking for any suspects in the case. ( darya )( darya ) for the fourth time this week... a coffee shop is targeted by thieves. its a crime trend that's been plaguing east bay communities. take a look at the latest incidents. hercules, fremont, and now concord have been hit by thieves going after people in a coffee shop. on monday -- one person was pistol whipped inside a starbucks on willow avenue. then on tuesday ---there were two separate robberies in fremont. in one of them ... a woman had her laptop stolen. then on wednesday

evening... a man sitting inside a concord starbucks was robbed. his laptop was also snatched. ( james ) petaluma police are searching for a woman who stole credit cards during two weddings. police say a wallet was taken on january 2nd... from saint vincent de paul church. the victim said she left her purse in a backroom during the ceremony. when she returned to the room... her wallet was missing and she later found out her credit cards had been used. a similar theft was reported last saturday... police released a photograph of the suspect ... using one of the victim's credit cards at a target in petaluma. ( james ) santa cruz police need your help finding a bank robber. it happened at the u-s bank on morrissey boulevard near soquel avenue. the man had a gun and demanded money from the tellers. after getting away with cash... he ran off. police did follow a couple of leads but couldn't find the thief. as you can see... he was wearing a mask,

( darya ) sex workers in san francisco will now be able to report crimes without fear of being arrested. the new policy is thought to be the first of it's kind in the u-s.

police and the district attorney's office worked with advocacy groups to address violence against women. research shows that most sex workers do not go to the police when they are attacked because they fear they will be arrested. authorities want to protect and encourage women to report violent crimes. those who do report crimes will also be referred to community and victim resources. ( darya ) the last nuclear power plant in california is set to close... state regulators approved the closure... marking the end of more than 50- years of nuclear power in the state. the plant in diablo canyon will close in 20-24 or 20-25 ... when its licenses expire. the president of the public utilities commission says the plant is no longer economically feasible. p-g-and-e says it plans to expand energy efficiency and its use of renewable energy. the company says the shutdown will not cause customers' bills to increase. ( lydia )breaking news from overnight. we are following an apartment fire that broke out in san jose. firefighters received reports of the fire just after midnight. it took about an hour for them to put it out. a total of 8 units were damaged... displacing 16 people including 5 children. no injuries

have been reported from the fire. ( james ) the number of missing after a mudslide hit southern california is constantly changing -- and not just because people are being found. right now... the number stands at 43. but yesterday morning it went from 48 down to 8.. because of uncertainty and mistakes. rescue teams and cadaver dogs are digging through knee-deep

mud looking for people who haven't been seen in days. authorities say at least 17- people have been killed by the storm. one montecito man says he lost two friends. ( james ) the areas ( james ) the areas where the victims were found remains under mandatory evacuation. these deadly mudslides came after the thomas fire -- the largest in state history. heavy rains triggered mudslides in burned out areas. authorities say nearly 600 structures are damaged or destroyed from the mudslides. ( james ) amtrak has resumed service across parts of southern california. the deadly mudslides in ventura and santa barbara

counties forced the amtrak pacific surfliner tracks to close earlier this week. amtrak says they expect high demands for the service since highway 101 is expected to stay closed through monday. ( james ) take a look at the video of a mudflow down in burbank. you can see the muddy waters... so powerful... they push a car right down the road. the video was taken by burbank firefighters. they posted it to instagram writing -- "urban prius bobsledding in burbank!" the driver and his girlfriend say it was a very scary situation. but driver was able to maneuver the car away safely. no one was hurt. ( darya ) in napa county... the sheriff's department has identified the man killed by a rockslide on highway 121. 22-year-old hernan reyes-aguires lived in fairfield. he was on his

way home when a giant rock knocked his car off a cliff. officials in napa county are now stepping up efforts to prevent more mud and rockslides from happening. the office of emergency services is providing free straw wattles and wooden stakes to people in areas damaged by last october's fire storm. ( darya ) the d-m-v is working on a fire recovery operation to remove fire- damaged vehicles in santa rosa. with support from the state and local law enforcement agencies. the department is working to identify damaged cars and process the necessary paperwork for removal. the goal of the operation is to keep debris cleanup on track. the removal will continue for the next several days. ( darya ) in the east bay... there are new efforts to solve the murder of a 16-year-old hayward high school student. a 10- thousand dollar reward is now being offered for information on the murder of lamar murphy. lamar was was shot and killed almost one year ago on princeton street and smalley

avenue in hayward. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out this poster asking anyone with information to come forward. ( james ) a former coroner in the north bay pleads guilty to committing a lewd act with a minor. darrell harris entered the plea during a hearing yesterday morning. he was charged with a number of sex crimes dating back to 2008... and continuing until earler this year. harris faces five years of probation and up to one year in the marin county jail. he must also register as a convicted sex offender. harris had worked in the marin county coroner's office for 15 years. ( james ) happening now... the president is denying claims that he used vulgar language during a meeting with lawmakers on daca. while a group of bipartisan senators pitched a compromise on immigration... a source briefed on the meeting says the president grew frustrated and asked lawmakers quote: "why do we want all these people from

threw him to the ground.... and dragged him. we first showed this video yesterday morning. after a second and third shot...the international student let go of the bag. but... he was hit by one bullet in the thigh. ( darya ) the victim said he felt lucky only one of the bullets hit him. he graduated with his p-h-d just 10 days after the robbery. police are still looking for any suspects in the case. ( darya ) for the fourth time this week... a coffee shop is targeted by thieves. its a crime trend that's been plaguing east bay communities. take a look

at the latest incidents. hercules, fremont, and now concord have been hit by thieves going after people in a coffee shop. on monday -- one person was pistol whipped inside a starbucks on willow avenue. then on tuesday ---there were two separate robberies in fremont. in one of them ... a woman had her laptop stolen. then on wednesday evening... a man sitting inside a concord starbucks was robbed. his laptop was also snatched. ( james ) petaluma police are searching for a woman who stole credit cards during two weddings. police say a wallet was taken on january 2nd... from saint vincent de paul church. the victim said she left her purse in a backroom during the ceremony. when she returned to the room... her wallet was missing and she later found out her credit cards had been used. a similar theft was reported last saturday... police released a photograph of the suspect ... using one of the

victim's credit cards at a target in petaluma. ( james ) santa cruz police need your help finding a bank robber. it happened at the u-s bank on morrissey boulevard near soquel avenue. the man had a gun and demanded money from the tellers. after getting away with cash... he ran off. police did follow a couple of leads but couldn't find the thief. as you can see... he was wearing a mask, sunglasses and gloves at the time of the robbery.
