17 people were killed this week in the santa barbara county mudslides. as john lorince reports ... that number could increase over the next few days ... as the search for missing people continues. rescue teams and cadaver dogs dig through knee-deep mud looking for people who haven't been seen in days.authorities confirm at least 17-people were killed by the storm. sheriff bill brown/santa barbara county sheriff "jonathan benitez, 10 years old. caylee benitez, 3 years old. martin cabrera munoz, 48 years old..."montecito resident curt pickering lost two friends.curt pickering/montecito resident "josie gower is one and rebecca riskin and their bodies were found down, you know, down at the 101 from glen oaks 192, so that's almost two miles. so it's real sad, more so when you know these people."the areas

resumed service across parts of southern california.the deadly mudslides in ventura and santa barbara counties forced the amtrak pacific surfliner tracks to close earlier this week.amtrak says they expect high demands for the service since highway 101 is expected to stay closed through monday. ( james ) in napa county ... the sheriff's department has identified the driver who was killed in a rockslide on highway 121. 22-year-old hernan reyes-aguires lived in fairfield. he was on his way home from visiting family in napa when a giant rock knocked his car off a cliff. officials in napa county are now stepping up efforts to prevent more mud and rockslides from happening. the napa county office of emergency services has teamed up with a company to provide free straw wattles and wooden stakes to people in areas damaged by last october's fire storm. they are meant to prevent erosion. and caltrans says they will now double their efforts to make sure hillsides are safe all across napa county. ( james )two armed robbers target a man who was getting out of his car in the east bay.

berkeley police are hoping surveillance video will lead to an arrest ... after he was robbed and shot. kron 4's ali reid spoke with the victim in the attack. only when i see the video i realize i could have been killedchilling surveillance footage shows the victim getting his backpack from the backseat of his car and within seconds, thieves were on him. my very first thought is that i have to hold it tightwe will not be showing the victim's face in order to protect his identity. the u-c berkeley ph-d student says his laptop and dissertation were inside the bag. a struggle ensued. one of the suspects fired a shot, threw him to the ground and dragged him. he dragged me across the curb then fired a 2nd and 3rd shotafter the 2nd shot rang out, the international student decided to let go, remembering he had his dissertation backed up. shot once in the thigh, he says everything happened extremely fast. he never saw

( james ) happening now... leaders on capitol hill are trying to strike a deal on immigration... just days before a potential government shutdown. but a vulgar remark from president trump is jeopardizing those talks. while a group of bipartisan senators pitched a compromise on immigration... a source briefed on the meeting says the president grew frustrated and asked lawmakers quote: "why do we want all these people from expletive countries coming here?" he also said the u-s should bring in more people from countries like norway.

(james) santa cruz police need your help looking for a man who robbed a bank. it happened at the u-s bank on morrissey boulevard near soquel avenue in santa cruz. this is an image of the robber from surveillance video. the suspect had a gun and demanded money from the tellers.the robber ran towards the parking lot with an undisclosed amount of cas. police followed a couple of leads but were unable to find him. (james) petaluma police are searching for a woman suspected of stealing credit cards during two weddings. according to police ... they received a report of a stolen wallet on january 2nd at saint vincent de paul church. the victim said, she left her purse in a backroom during the ceremony... and when she returned to the room afterwards ... her wallet was missing and she later found out, her credit cards had been used. a similar theft was reported around 4- in the afternoon last saturday. police released a photograph of the suspect ... using one of the victim's credit cards

( james )(áááboxesááá) one couple's oceanview dream house had to be leveled after being undermined by erosion. the house was yellow- tagged back in january of 2016 ... after rain and waves had worn away the cliff where it sits. kron4's maureen kelly spoke with the owners ... dealing with losing their dream home. the 69 year old house went down surprisingly quickly.... it's redwood and plaster broken up into bits with the merciless claw of an escavator. the house had managed to stay standing after the 1998 el

nino storms sent another neighboring cliffside home on this block crashing to the beach below....and resulted in several others on this stretch to be torn down. but another monster el nino during the winter of 2015-2016 ate away what was left of its yard and undermined the foundation. they won't let you stay in a house that you can see the ocean when you look out down at the windowmelissa mcconnel wore all black as she documented the death of her dreamhouse. she and her husband bought it in 2009 and spent 7 years remodeling it themselves. they had just begun moving in, when the house was yellowtagged. they did what they could to save it....here's video from the spring of 2016 when they had it pulled forward to a safer position on the cliff and put up on blocks as they tried to find another lot they could move it to. we had lots near mitts misses the latest of which was april of last year but it wasn't meant to be i guessnot sure of how many winters the home could safely withstand, the the city of pacifica used a hazard mitigation grant to purchase it from owners. once cleared the land will become part of the esplanade overview trail...melissa and her husband say they plan to come back and visit. it was wonderful to actually be here and see it every morning. and every sunset and all that. but the beach isn't going anywhere. the ocean is it going anywherethe couple who now lives in the east bay, say they plan to start over and are now looking for another pacifica dream house for their next move. maureen kelly kron4 news.

the video of a mudflow down in burbank. you can see the muddy waters... so powerful... they push a car right down the road. the video was taken by burbank firefighters. they posted it to instagram writing -- "urban prius bobsledding in burbank!" the driver and his girlfriend say it was a very scary situation. but driver was able to maneuver the car away safely. no one was hurt. ( darya ) the d-m-v is working on a fire recovery operation to remove fire- damaged vehicles in santa rosa. with support from the state and local law enforcement agencies. the department is working to identify damaged cars and process the necessary paperwork for removal. the goal of the operation is to keep debris cleanup on track. the removal will continue for the next several days. ( darya ) in the east bay... there are new efforts to solve the murder of a 16-year-old hayward high school student. a 10- thousand dollar reward is now being offered for information on the murder of lamar murphy. lamar was was shot and killed almost one year ago on princeton street and smalley avenue in hayward. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out this poster asking anyone with information to come forward.

( james ) happening today... the world surf league will make an announcement about the mavericks surf contest. organizers of the event have already notified all competitors that the event could begin as soon as monday. the all-day contest would start at eight in the morning... at the well-known spot off pillar point in half moon bay. a significant swell is expected to hit the coast this weekend. but competition can't start until the world surf league approves it. the contest window opened on january 3rd and runs until the end of february. this is the first time women are able to compete in the event. there is a vaccine that the clinic reccomends all dog owners get for their pets.
