(grant) officials in two east bay cities are taking steps to clean up their dog parks after reports of pets getting sick.kron4's maureen kelly talked to one couple who's dog was infected with the bacteria. the owners of this 7 month old mcnab mix named shay are returning to the drigon dog park in union city for the first time after they say their pet was diagnosed with leptospirosis. well well basically the vet didn't say anything about where she caught it but probably the probably hereknown commonly as lepto, the disease can spread through infected animal urine found in stagnant water or soil. according to the american vetinary medical assocation website , it can be transferred to people and cause flu like symtpons and sometimes resulting kidney or liver diease. shay's owners say they noticed a change in their pup right away.all the sudden she started urinating everywhere and her energy was low and wrapped it was low appetite was lowshay has since been treated with antibiotics and cleared by her vet to go back to the dog park.union city officials say they closed

and disinfected this park back in september after learning of a potential lepto outbreak that was never confirmed .and then did it again in december after hearing of more cases linked to fremont's central park dog park. officials there they also closed and disinfected the dog park in november after an anonymous person complained their dog got infected here. since that scrub down two more people also say their pets were infected after visiting , so the park was closed and cleaned again. the fremont park officials say plan to disinfect this park quarterly now and have removed the water bowls. signs are posted warning people about the potential problem at both parks and suggest that people bring their own water for their dogs. most back visiting the parks today say they aren't worried about it... i see dogs here and they all seem healthy i don't have any worries about it at allnone of the dogs in our morning group have been sick if you have a responsible park and people get care of it you know you're gonna be okmost are just happy to have back open.....so their dogs can have a safe place to run around.maureen kelly kron4 news. kron4 news.maureen kelly kron4

(grant) in the south bay... we're learning about a second dog that had to be hospitalized after coming down with what's knows as "dog flu." kron4 visited the cambell vet hospital earlier this week. they're now telling us that a second dog, a basset hound, required hospitalization after contracting the virus. dog flu causes coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, decreased appetite... and is highly contagious. vets at the hospital are concerned the flu will spread throughout the south bay... ábut there is a vaccine that the clinic recommends all dog owners get for their pets. (catherine) the grueling search for victims entered a fourth day friday...following the mudslidesin southern california.... rescue teams and cadaver dogs are still digging through knee- deep mud looking for people who haven't been seen in days.

(catherine) those mudslides happened after the devastating thomas fire....which stripped awaytrees and brush.........leaving the land exposed. now - the fire has been declared one-hundred percent contained. it burned for more than a month in santa barbara and ventura counties, killing two people. it burned nearly 300- thousand acres and destroyed more than a thousand buildings, many of them homes.. federal and state authorities are now examining the burn area to get a better ideaof the risk for more flooding and mudslides.. of thick fog today that were slow to burn off in some parts of the bay area. that kept their temperatures rather cool. while thoses places that had the sun like santa rosa saw their temperatures soar in the mid 60s. it will be partly cloudy tonight with stars and areas of dense fog. the fog will be very thick again in some of the valleys. on the satellite image you can see the storms off the coast but high pressure will send them well to the north for the weekend. we will see an offshore wind which should help bring warmer temperatures to parts of the bay area especially near the coast and south bay. it should be a good weekend to travel around the state. there will likely be tule fog in the central valley again so be careful. highs around the bay area will be in the 50s to upper 60s. there will be a few more clouds on sunday but plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures. on monday the clouds will move back in with a chance of showers. showers are also possible on tuesday and later next week. on the way could bring some big waves to one of the premiere surf breaks in all the world.(catherine) as kron four's rob fladeboe reports - big wave riders and their fans are crossing their fingers that the maverick's challenge surf contest could get the green light for early next week. the surf is still a little flat here at pillar point north of half moon bay where ridable waveswere few and far between on friday...but just around the jetty there are signs the waves could soon be big enough to give the go ahead for the big wave surf contest known as the mavericks challenge. contest founder jeff clark is optimistic about next week but is concernd about the wind. jeff clark/maverick's tournament founder"...we don't want to wind and the weather that comes with it, we want a day just like this and for the low pressure to hit the oregon border and send those big waves right down here to mavericks..."a west-northwest swell could bring waves with faces in the 20 foot range on monday. now run by the world surf league, the mavericks challenge, if and when it

court documents say that randall saito was caught with high-quality fake i-d's....two cellphonesand more than 6-thousand dollars in cash. prosecutors filed the documents in an attempt to keep him in jail, instead of sending him back to the hospital he fled. they argue that he should not get bail because he might have a stash of 'other' fake i- d's...or secret sources of money. saito is now back in hawaii and is being held in a correctional center.he walked out of a suburban honolulu hospital in november, called a taxi, and flew to san jose. police arrested him in stockton three days later. a detective's report says he had somehow opened a combination- locked gate to escape. (grant) the san jose police department released the names of the officers who shot and killed a man earlier this week. officers adam hutson and timothy faye were called to the metcalf energy center tuesday night. they found a man carrying an ax and a pipe...he reported;y refused

to surrender and walked away. he eventually turned around and walked back towards police. officers ordered the man to put down his weapons multiple times... but he refused. that is when the officers shot and killed the man. investigators are reviewing police body camera footage of the shooting. those two officers are now on paid administrative leave. the suspect's identity has not yet been released. morning... making for dangerous conditions on the roads. (grant) and that fog was a factor in the death of a woman in san leandro. as kron four's terisa estacio reports, the accident happened near a bus stop. (estacio reporting) it was friday morning around 7am- a san leandro resident at this bus stop near fairmont drive and east 14th - the condtions making it hard to see, and that is when tragedy struck.lt. ron clark. it was very foggy, definitely a factor in this collision. it appears she may have been stepping out eithr to cross or see if a bus was coming. unfortunately, the fog was so thick that she didn't see the car coming and the car did not see her step out.lt. ron clark is with san leandro police department.lt. clark. as far as the driver? no hit and run, right? no, he pulled over to help. witnesses told us, it was just a tragic start of the day.lt. clark says the driver was even going less then the posted speed limit. kron four news has learned the woman was 82 year old liang youjian, 82 from san leandro. lt. clark. it i horrible.

to keep you safe. épilots and safety experts say air traffic controllers did a good job when they quickly redirected an aeromexico jet that was descending toward a runway where a virgin america plane was getting ready to take off.officials say an aeromexico passenger jet from mexico city was ordered to abort a landing tuesday after it lined up on a runway occupied by another commercial jet.retired airline captain and aviation safety expert john cox wednesday that he saw no cause for alarm.an aeromexico passenger jet was ordered to abort a landing at san francisco international airport after it lined up on a runway occupied by another commercial jet, the third close call at the busy airport in six months.the san jose mercury news reports aeromexico flight 668 had been cleared to land tuesday. it was about a mile from the airport when controllers saw the aircraft was lined up for a runway occupied by a virgin america airbus a320 jet awaiting departure.the tower ordered the aeromexico boeing 737 jet to circle around until it was again cleared for landing.an air canada flight crew landed in october on a runway despite repeated warnings to abort because a controller believed another airplane had not left the area yet.in july, another air canada jet nearly landed on a taxiway where four planes were waiting before takeoff.

(catherine) the company says that some 2006 ford rangers have faulty takata airbag deflators. now - ford is confirming that a driver died in july of last year because of the inflator. (grant) this is the second death involving the 2006 ford rangers. overall 21 deaths have been linked to the faulty takata inflators worldwide. ford is now telling dealers they must replace those airbag inflators for free. (catherine) general motors is launching a self-driving car without any manual controls. the car doesn't have a steering wheel...and it doesn't have

won't be taking her new puppy gwen home.after two men stole five frenchies out of animal kingdom. louie peraza/father "it's not like they stole some random pet at a pet store, you know. they took our dog." the peraza family-- planning to take gwen home right in time for their daughter piper's birthday party. piper peraza/dog owner"she was just so sweet and she had that playfulness in her. but when you picked her up she was just calm."the two thieves pried open the back door and raced right to the french bull dog puppies worth 6-thousand dollars each.linda nofer/animal kingdom"the fact that they were only in here for one minute. they knew exactly what they were going for and those are a very, very expensive breed of dog." the thieves stuffed the dogs in a trash bin and dragged them out, including goat, who belonged to the kriaris couple. theresa kriaris/dog owner"i mean he already felt like he was part of the family." goat was about to go home next week -- after finishing medication-- and now his family worries his infection will only get worse. chris kriaris/dog owner"there's two of them out of the five that are sick that need veterinarian attention." the families are hoping these thieves do the right thing-- and turn the puppies in-- or drop them off somewhere safe. louie peraza/father"they've affected our household. you know, they have broken our hearts. and we just want her back."

(catherine) a large apartment fire near atlanta led to an unforgettable rescue. a fire captain caught a baby who was tossed from a third floor balcony....that balcony -- was engulfed in flames. take a look at this video -- the baby was just one of a dozen people rescued that day. the fire captain also happens to be the mother of triplets -- and she described what happened. (steve) 16 people...including multiple children... are without a home tonight after a fire scorched an apartment complex in san jose. the fire started at about 12:30 this morning on rancho drive near capital expressway. firefighters say they initially responded with one engine because it was originally reported as a single car fire. once on scene, they realized it was much bigger and called for backup. it took firefighters about an hour to knock out the flames. everyone inside was able to get out and no one was injured.

forest service made the announcement today after surveying the 440-square mile area of devastation caused by the "thomas fire". the fire broke out on december 4th in ventura county -- spreading to santa barbara county and destroying thousands of structures on its way to becoming the largest wildfire in california history. it continued to smolder before a storm hit the barren area this week -- causing debris-laden flash floods and sweeping away homes. kron four's terisa estacio reports, the accident happened near a bus stop in san leandro. (estacio reporting) it was friday morning around 7am- a san leandro resident at this bus stop near fairmont drive and east 14th - the condtions making it hard to see, and that is when tragedy struck.lt. ron clark. it was very foggy, definitely a factor in this collision. it appears she may have been stepping out eithr to cross or see if a bus was coming. unfortunately, the fog was so thick that she didn't see the car coming and the car did not see her step out.lt. ron clark is with san leandro police department.lt. clark. as far as the driver? no hit and run, right? no, he pulled over to help. witnesses told us, it was just a tragic start of the day.lt. clark says the driver was even going less then the posted speed limit. kron four news has learned the woman was 82 year old liang youjian, 82 from san leandro. lt. clark. it i horrible. there are no words i can say that could help.the lt. adds that it is always important, especially during these cold, dark foggy mornings to be extra extra careful when out. lt. clark. awareness, for those out walking around, just be aware. you have to understand it is really foggy out and you have to be aware, people can't see and others cant see, so slow down and use extra caution. in san leandro, terisa estacio kron four news

nearly 25 years.... a cold case murder in california may have been solved... a redding man has confessed -- in an emotional t-v interview.catherine heenan is here with the story.. (catherine) that man is 44-year-old brian hawkins....who on tuesday walked into redding t-v station k-r-c-rand said he had killed a man back in 1993... the station did the interview but told him it would not air until he had confessed to police...hawkins then turned himself in. he says he was involved in the death of 19-year-old frank mcalister....alongwith his brother and sister. he says they robbed macalister to get money for drugs -- then killed him.the victim's remains weren't found for a year. hawkins says he couldn't keep the secret any longer....and had to tell his story...saying his life has been a misery.
