(catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis... tonight -- that officer's coworkers are saying that he's lucky to be alive. the crash happened last night in concord.. on highway four near port chicago highway. now we'ew learning that the suspect in the case has been in trouble with the law before..(grant) kron4's terisa estacio joins us live in walnut creek - where the officer is in the hospital... terisa... correria is the spokesperson martinez works he explains lendway got trapped under a truck after it was struck by suspected dui driver 52 year old tammy walker. lendway, a motorcyle officer had been off his bike, and in the center divider talking to the driver of a lexus and truck who had gotten into a fender bender on highway 4 near port chicago hwy. that is when walker, driving in terhe ivider as if it were a lane plowed into the truck and sent it flying into lendway.correria.

here i is an officer up here, telling people to slow down and while he is doing that, the erratic speeding motorist goes pact recklessly hitting the f150 truck, the truck then catapultes onto lendway. officer correria says lendway is able to reach his cellphone and called for help, called his wife and an ambulance quickly showed up to take him to the hospital. walker is arested on a long list of offenses, including driving on a suspended license for a prior dui. kron four news has learned that case is out of el cerrito. as for lendway, correria has known and worked with lendway for a long time, so this case is quite personal. officer lendway is a former marine , tip of the spear kind of guy. terrific. partner, it was hard when he got hurt, it is pretty upsetting. great family guy, anyone one of us would have change plactes with him if we could. (grant) the man charged with the

murder of a c-h-p officer on christmas eve appeared in court today. 22-year-old mohammed ali was arraigned in alameda county superior court. he is charged with the killing of 33-year old officer andrew camilleri -- after rear ending the officer's parked patrol car on interstate 8-80 in hayward. authorities say ali was under the influence of marijuana and alcohol at the time. ali is being held without bail at the santa rita jail in dublin. he is expected to return to court next week to enter a plea. "thirty years of marriage ... do you louise want to once again take david as your lawful wedded husband?" (catherine) this was the scene just a couple of years ago.david and louise turpin -- surrounded by their 13 children as they renewed their wedding vows at an elvis chapel in las vegas.

tonight the couple is behind bars, charged with torture and child endangerment.(grant)the 13 siblings, ages two to 29, are being treated for malnutrition after authorities found them shackled and starving in a riverside county home.steve aveson is in the newsroom with what we learned today.steve? david and louise turpin are being described as quiet, standoffish, and deeply religious ... feeling they were called by god to have many children.authorities found those children living in a house of horror.

"i thought they were homeschooled, i thought they were isolated. no friends came over, no family came over."the six children, including the two year old, are being treated for malnutrition at riverside university hospital."these kids are going to need a lot of help."the seven adults, five women and two men, are being housed together at corona regional medical center, hospital officials say they are horrified at their condition. "i've been in health care a long time and i've never seen this." (steve) the turpin's home was registered as a private school with six students.there is no evidence of that any children outside the family attended. california law does not require any inspections of private schools. (catherine) happening now...livermore police are asking for help in finding a man wanted for identity theft.

the suspect is robert carl. police say he's homeless but is often seen around the tri-valley area. he's accused of using a fake check to buy more than three- thousand dollars in merchandise at a business.. he's also wanted for burglary. (grant) this just in -- police are asking for help identifying a patient who is in the emergency room at alameda hospital... this is a photo of the man...the emergency room staff is trying to find his friends, family or anyone who might know the man's name. (grant) new at five... the mood was somber at kolb elementary school in dublin today. this after families there learned over the holiday weekend that a student at the school recently passed away. (catherine) the school is keeping many of the details of what happened private... kron four's philippe djegal shares what we know. (philippe) early last week... the alameda county public health department says it had been notified by a health care provider... that a student at kolb

elementary school in dublin was being treated for a disease. days later, the principal at the school and the dublin unified school distrct sent letters out to parents... letting them know the student passed away. multiple parents tell kron four that the student was a young boy... some saying they became emotional when they learned about the boy's passing.sailakshmi chitta/parent- "i was shocked. so i feel so sad. i couldn't sleep that day. actually -- that night." the school district's superintendent confirms that the student died away from campus. the public health department says federal law prevents them from releasing the details surrounding the students death. stating only that the student's illness did not present any significant health risks to the student body though some parents are still concerned that their kids should see a doctor.raj garlapati/parent- "it would be, i think, good if the school provides more information and more details about the cause, and the preventative care that the rest of the kids could take." classes went on as scheduled tuesday... with the school district making

counselors available to students and staff who were shaken emotionally by the loss of the student. in dublin, philippe djegal, kron four news. (grant) california lawmakers are introducing a variety of bills...looking to protect consumers who lose their homes in major disasters. the lawmakers say their legislation is inspired by complaints from people who lost their homes in a series of destructive wildfires throughout the state last year. but most of the measures... would not help the north bay fire victims... or others who have already lost homes. insurers generally require a detailed list of items destroyed in a fire. however one new bill...will require insurers to pay at least 80 percent of the coverage limit...even without that list. (grant) the number of single-family homes destroyed by the southern california mudslides continues to grow. 115 have now been destoyed. more than 200 homes have

a south bay woman who died after getting the flu is speaking abouther death... the family hopes it will get people's attention.(catherine) katie oxley thomas, of san jose, was just 40 years old. kron four's rob fladeboe talked to her brother. anthony oxley/sister died from flu "...i'm thinking, wow, this is a bad one but no way did i think that she was going to die..."anthony oxley is talking about his late sister, 40 year-old katie oxley- thomas, who died on january

4th, just two days after coming down with the flu. anthony oxley"...they kept telling me she's young and healthy and she's going to fight this off and i thought she would too but it seemed like every fifteen minutes something went wrong..."after coming down with the flu, anthony says his sister, a mother of three, went went to the emergency room at good samaritan hospital the next day, where she was admitted, diagnosed with pneumonia and then moved to intensive care where she passed away that very evening.anthony oxley "....we have two close family friends who are i.c.u. nurses, one has been at stanford for 26 years, they helped us out when my mom was very sick one time and they said in all their experience they had never seen anything like this..."anthony says his sister had gotten a flu shot. having recently celebrated her 4oth birthday, katy was about to start a new job. she went to the gym a lot, she ran marathons and was into yoga and healthy eating. her family wants people to take the flu seriously.anthony oxley "....this is something we definitely don't want to be

highlighting the case of a 34-year-old man who suffered a nasty neck injuryby holding in a forceful sneeze. he had pinched his nose and kept his mouth closed -- which turned out to be a bad idea. doctors say he actually had a small hole in his trachea.. internal injuries also included air bubbles in his soft tissueshe didn't need surgery but had to be hospitalized for two weeks. sneezes can produce pressurized air that can explode at speeds up to 100 miles an hour.. so doctors say - even if you're worried about annoying the people around you -- it's better to just sneeze... (grant) the number of americans áwithout health insurance is growing for the first time since obamacare went into effect. the uninsured rate rose one-point- three percent last year.... up to more than 12 percent according to the gallup index. that increase represents more than three million americans who are now uninsured. experts blame this trend on current efforts to repeal obamacare, as well as insurers either withdrawing

(anchor) time now to check on our weather... with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. lawrence karnow: there were plenty of low clouds and fog today with some lingering drizzle. doppler radar is showing most of the rain has ended. but it looks like the fog and low clouds will stick around tonight and be thick in spots. big waves are now moving in now and a high surf warning has been issued for tomorrow night through thursday. some waves are forecast to be as high as 40 feet! on the satellite image you can see the big storm off the coast. but right now high pressure will bring us a mild and dry day on wednesday.

we'll likely see a mix of sunshine and clouds with mild temperatures for this time of year. around the bay tomorrow highs will be in the 50s to mid 60s in the southbay. clouds will begin to move in and showers could begin ini the norht bay on wednesday night. rain and wind will spread across the bay on thursday. it will likely be the coldest storm of the season with snow levels dropping down to 3,500 feet. so we could see a dusting of snow on friday. it will be partly cloudy on saturday with a chance of more rain on sunday.

a bus driver has a close call with a car that went crashing into the second floor of a building. this is new dash cam video from a bus... showing the moment the car went flying into the dental office. it happened in santa ana. police say the speeding car hit a median and then propelled into the building. and here is another angle of the crash. you see the car crashing into the building... and then the bus driving by just seconds later. two people were in the

(grant) an effort to enact change...after violent protests on the u-c berkeley campus. this alwsuit is coming nearly one year after a planned speech by conservative speaker milo yiannopoulos. (catherine) the group that's suing made the announcement today... saying they're taking legal action against u-c berkeley, police, and the mayor... after being attacked during the protests. (grant) kron4 's camila bernal spoke to one of the plaintiffs about what happened that night... and the reason behind the lawsuit. when the protest against milo yiannopoulos' appearance at uc berkeley got violent, katrina redelsheimer, says she was trapped3:01:46 i came in with a group of friends trying to attend an event that as far as we knew was still going to take placeshe arrived before the event was scheduled to start and said the barricades

behind the 16 year old. 16 year old sophmore ryan joseph is described as everyone's friend by his coach.....here's seen in his lacrosse jersey in this photo. but it was when he competeing in a jv wrestling match last wednesday that he suffered a life changing spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.the accident has left him even unable to breath on his own at this time. the news of the tragic accident has shaken those students who know ryan here at college park high school in pleasant hill. it's been kind of tense. everyone's kind of on their toes talking about it just really thinking about. we're just really thinking about him a lot. no one is really talking about anything else and we're really trying to make sure everybody else is safeparents at the school are also saddened and upset at the thought of a once healthy young man paralyzed while simply playing sports. it's just really unfortunate like i said it was just probably a one in 1 million kind of thing just feeling

star is making progress after a diving accident last year. the senior just went back to school for the first time last week after missing more than three months of classes. while he is still paralyzed from the chest down, the family is hopeful he will be able to move his hands soon. (catherine) the new york times is reporting that special counsel robert mueller has subpoenaed former white house chief strategist steve bannon. the times says bannon was subpoenaed last week to testify before a grand jury. it's part of the investigation into possible connections between president trump's associates and russia. this is the first time mueller is known to have issued a grand jury subpoena to try to getinformation from someone within the president's inner circle. the news broke today as bannon was testifying before the house intelligence committee -- which is also investigating whether russia interfered with the presidential election... bannon was a top aide in the white house until

(grant) tonight, a wild story that started in san francisco and ended in the south bay. a delivery man followed a thief who had stolen his truck - loaded with high-end appliances. the c-h-p eventually the c-h-p eventually joined the chase - and helped the man get his truck back. kron 4's j.r. stone has the story.. officers armed with hand guns and rifles as they attempt to catch a thief in sunnyvale. a person who stole this delivery truck as the workers were installing an appliance at a home near san francisco's japantown.sot so when they

went into the house somebody got into the truck and runaway the workers immediately called the owner of the truck jaime pacheco who was in south san francisco. he got in his car, got on highway 101, and what do you know, he saw his truck. sot i was 101 north when i saw the truck coming 101 south and i said that's my truck but it wasn't my driverso pacheco got off the highway.turned around, sped up, and followed his stolen truck that you see here.this is cell phone video that his passenger shot. he then dialed 911.nats somebody stole my truckc-h-p officers got involved near redwood city. you can see some of the flashing lights in the distance. the driver wouldn't pull over.eventually that driver exited the highway, ditched the truck ,and ran. sot and i look over and all of a sudden i see this white

was born in the shower. briley jones went to the hospital sunday because she was having contractions. nurses told her the contractions were too far apart... and they sent her home. briley says the pain eased up that night and she didn't realize she 'was' in labor. the next morning -- when she was taking a shower... her son was born. "just literally had him in the shower. by myself. without anybody in there. i had contractions and labor all night that night and i didn't even realize i was having it because it didn't hurt. my back hurt a lot but it didn't register to me" (catherine) that wasn't the first big surprise for the family... three months before she got pregnant... doctors had told her that she could never have children. (grant) kim kardashian and kanye west are welcoming their third child. their daughter was born yesterday via surrogate. kardashian made the announcement on her website today. the little girl is the couple's second daughter, joining older sister north, who is four-and-a-half,

this is video from yesterday morning-- as ice agents made sure jorge garcia boarded a plane to mexico --- his family gathered around him with tears and hugs. jorge's wife cindy says, for the last 13 years jorge has been checking in with ice and working on finding a path to citizenship. the family has spent more than 100- thousand dollars in legal fees, but some bad legal help set them back. they have continued to check in and apply for extensions.... and worked to find 'a path.'cindy garcia/wife: "we've never done anything without the permission from immigrations. because anytime we leave the city, you have to tell them where you are going." but this last time the family checked in, immigration told the garcia family he had to leave on january 15th. his wife says, jorge has no criminal record, not even a traffic ticket. the family is completely devastated -- he had to leave behind a 12-
