jessica smith has the story. nats the nation's biggest tech companies told senators they're working to keep extremist content -- like terror recruitment videos -- off their platforms. facebook says since the fall of 2016, its technology has gotten better. facebook: more than 99% of isis and al qaeda propaganda that we remove from our service is content we identify ourselves, before anybody has flagged it for us. while much of the hearing focused on international terrorism -- senator tammy baldwin pressed the social media companies about what they're doing to deal with domestic terror groups and the recent spike in hate crimes. baldwin: particularly, white nationalist and white supremacist violence? youtube sot: our violent extremist policies apply to violent extremism in all its form -- including white supremacy and other forms of hatred. senators todd young and gary peters asked about the role algorithms and artificial intelligence play in the process -- both good and bad. peters: algorithms may be partly responsible for getting extremist content in front of users. facebook said the top priority is removing the content. facebook: once you take it out of the equation.
5:38 pm
the algorithm has no role in promoting it, because it's simply not on facebook. after the hearing, young told us he thinks the companies still have work to do. sen. todd young (r-in): they're using to filter appropriate and inappropriate content has holes in it. humans still play a part in deciding what is appropriate for social media -- and young also argued there needs to be transparency in that decision-making process. in washington, i'm jessica smith.
