(grant) tonight, much of the northern california coast is taking a pounding as this storm has generated some gigantic waves.(vicki) that of course didn't keep hard core surfers our of the water... but as as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, five of them had to be rescued in santa cruz. the swell was expected to reach 17 feet here along the greater santa cruz coast on thursday but the breakers were accompanied by rough water and strong currents. that made for some tough going for surfers as several had to be rescued says battalion chief jeff breasher.jeff breasher/santa cruz co central fire"....we've been going all day...just in this one area here we've pulled six people out of the water..."all but one of the rescues were effected by this boat dispatched from the harbor while astate park jet ski with a rescue swimmer on board could be seen patrolling the surf from pleasure point to capitola. why were so many surfers getting into trouble

(catherine) new video shows david and louise turpin being arraigned just a few hours ago... in what the d-a is calling a case of "human depravity." today he announced charges of torture, false imprisonment and neglect... there are 38 charges in all against the couple - who are each being held on 12-million dollars bail after entering their pleas. the more we hear about how the children

were allegedly treated....the more disturbing it becomes. prosecutors say they were kept up all night and slept all day...in a suspected attempt to avoid any outsiders witnessing the abuse. authorities say they were chained and shackled as punishment...going back years....fed one meal a day...and regularly beaten and occasionally strangled. they hadn't seen a doctor in years....had never seen a dentist...and were reportedly allowed one shower a year. the d- a says aside from the physical abuse....the emotional abuse was shocking. d.a. mike hestrin - supposedly home schooled, the children lacked even a basic knowledge of life. many of the children didn't know what a police officer was.. the 17- year-old, when asked if there was medication or pills in the home, didn't know what medication or pills were. the parents would apparently buy food for themselves and not allow the children to eat it. they would buy food including pies, pumpkin pies, apple pies. and leave it on the counter and let the children look at it, but not eat the food. the children are

described as malnourished, undersized, and with cognitive problems. it all came to light when a 17-year- old daughter escaped through a window...something authorities say she'd been planning it for 2 years. she took a younger sister with her, who became frightened and went back to the house. if convicted, the couple faces at least 90 years in prison...they're due back in court next month.. vicki and grant? (grant) in the east bay tonight..we now know the name of the man accused of causing a crash that killed a four year old girl... it happened in antioch -- investigators say the suspect drove a stolen truck into another vehicle with a mom and two children inside..as kron four's terisa estacio reports, the suspect is being held on a more than a million dollar bail.

(estacio reporting ) this is 23 year old noe saucedo of pittsburg... he was booked on one count of murder and two counts of felony evading. bail, set at more than 1 million fifty thousand. a contra costa sheriff's spokesperson says saucedo was driving a stolen vehicle wednesday that collided into another vehicle on somersville road in antioch. in that other vehicle, a mother, 4 yeawr old daughter an 2 year old... all rushed to the hospital, sadly, the four year pronounced dead at the hospital. the mother and infant still in intensive care. authorities say the crash took place after deputies received information about a stolen ford f250 in pittsburg wednesday afternoon... a deputy reportedly saw the vehicle and gave chase... on highway 4... as the suspect exited the highway on sommersville road - he allegedly hit the gas and ran a red light plowing into the family of three in their truck. saucedo remains in custody tonight at the martinez county jail. he is awaiting his first appearance in court. te

six calfornia cities.(grant) wiener calls the bill a "nuanced and responsible approach." it has the backing of local officials along with restaurant and night club owners.(vicki) the bill will give the cities the ability to extend hours in certain neighborhoods or specific nights of the week or year. two of those cities are san francisco and oakland. the extended hours apply to bars, restaurants and nightclubs but not liquor stores. youtube...is cracking down on a dangerous online trend...social media users eating tide laundry pods. (grant) youtube is removing videos of the "tide pod challenge." the videos have become an online craze among teenagers...in which they bite and sometimes swallow laundry detergent pods...some even cooking them before eating them. some older kids do this intentionally...but last year... poison control centers received more than 10- thousand reports of kids five and under áaccidentially swallowing the highly concentrated packs of laundry detergent. lawrence karnow: a new storm brought rain to the entire bay area. it is a much colder storm so snow levels in the bay area will drop to near 3,000 feet. that means we could see a few snow flakes on our higher peaks. showers will continue tonight with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. you can see the showers on doppler radar. they are more scattered now instead of steady rain. the wettest part of the bay area had over a half an inch of rain. on the satellite you can see the eye of the storm still spinning in the gulf of alaska. there is plenty of cold air the will rush in tonight and tomorrow. showers and chilly temperatures will continue friday with highs in the 40s and 50s. it will be a mostly dry but chilly start to the weekend. on sunday the clouds return with a chance of rain. more rain is possible next week.

distance from the water. the surf was so rough that several surfers got into trouble and had to be rescued in santa cruz. kron four's rob fladeboe has that part of the storm story. high surf and rough water here along the greater santa cruz coast on thursday. that made for an especially busy day for fist responders. the swell was expected to peak at about 17 feet, but not before at least six people were plucked from the water. five surfers rescued between pleasure point and capitol and one individual who got into trouble off cowell beach. the harbor master's rescue boat called into action several times along with a state parks jet ski and rescue swimmer on board.battalion chief jeff breasher/central fire district ".....yeah we were out early. i know santa cruz had one about 8:15 and then after that we were out here in capitola where we took five people out of the water..."the capitola warf was taking a pounding. it was a it wobbly out on the end and you could see water washing up through the cracks. police shut it down as a precaution.rob fladeboe"....as you might imagine, the beaches were more or less deserted but there were plenty of folks coming down to take in the show from the high ground. in santa cruz rob fladeboe kron 4 news

(estacio reporting ) this is 23 year old noe saucedo of pittsburg... he was booked on one count of murder and two counts of felony evading. bail, set at more than 1 million fifty thousand. a contra costa sheriff's spokesperson says saucedo was driving a stolen vehicle wednesday that collided into another vehicle on somersville road in antioch. in that other vehicle, a mother, 4 yeawr old daughter an 2 year old... all rushed to the hospital, sadly, the four year pronounced dead at the hospital. the mother and infant still in intensive care. authorities say the crash took place after deputies received information about a stolen ford f250 in pittsburg wednesday afternoon... a deputy reportedly saw the vehicle and gave chase... on highway 4... as the suspect exited the highway on sommersville road - he allegedly hit the gas and ran a red light plowing into the family of three in their truck. saucedo remains in custody tonight at the martinez county jail. he is awaiting his first appearance in court. te (steve) new at six... a man

who died in daly city yesterday morning has been identified as 34-year-old warren ragudo. police responded to an altercation between family members tuesday night at the 900 block of brunswick street. police then tased ragudo with a stun gun to calm him down. officers noticed shortly after that ragudo was unresponsive. he was then taken to a hospital....and according to the san mateo coroner's office...he died sometime after midnight. (catherine) a man is behind bars...accused of shooting two men in separate incidents in napa. police say 28-year-old angelo zazzarino...shot a man around 10 a.m yesterday on macbeth street. they say the victim had confronted zazzarino....after watching him act suspiciously near a neighbor's fence. zazzarino then opened fire on the man. a couple of

hours earlier... at a starbucks on lincoln avenue... policethink the same suspect shot a man in the stomach. zazzarino was arrested at his home ...on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder.... officers say he was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. x(steve) a big story we are tracking tonight... the southern california couple accused starving and torturing their 13 children are pleading not guilty. david and louise turpin made their first court appearance today. they are facing 38 charges total including torture, false imprisonment and neglect. prosecutors say they were kept up all night and slept all day...in a suspected attempt to avoid any outsiders witnessing the abuse. authorities say they were chained and shackled...fed one meal a day. regularly beaten and occasionally strangled. authorities became aware of the horrible situation when one of the children escaped the home with a phone. (mike hestrin/ riverside county district attorney): "the 17 year old victim that

escaped had been working on a plan with her siblings to escape this abuse for more than two years. she escaped through a window and took one of her siblings with her. that sibling eventually turned back, became frightened and turned back and went back into the house." all 13 children remain in the hospital. the children are described as malnourished and undersized. authorities say several have congnitive problems and nerve damage as a result of the extreme and prolonged physical abuse. the couple is due back in court next month. if convicted, they face at least 90 years in prison. (steve) back here in san francisco, undocumented youth and their allies rallied outside the federal building, urging congress to pass the dream act.(catherine) it would give roughly 800-thousand young people brought to this country by their parents, a path to citizenship. kron4's maureen kelly talked to protestors -- who say they don't want congress to make any compromises that would jeopardize other undocumented residents.

a powerful winter storm swept across europe today -- bringing strong winds that killed at least 7 and shut down travel across the continent. a twitter user captured this video from the netherlands --- you can see the wind toppling over a few people causing them to slide and roll on the ground. winter weather in the netherlands is so severe that storm winds blew the roof off a residential building in rotterdam today. amsterdam's main international airport grounded all flights for about an hour this morning -- canceling over 150 flights

(catherine) a big story we're following. an undocumented u-c berkeley student... arrested at a border checkpoint... is now a free man. luis mora was locked up for three weeks at a detention facility in san diego . he's a student at u-c berkeley and expected to return to school soon. the 20-year-old and his girlfriend were leaving a party earlier this month and took a wrong turn -- ending up at a checkpoint. mora had overstayed his visa while visiting the u.s. from colombia as a child. he talked with kron four after his release.(sot) released from detention:"and i'm grateful to be here and to be able to fight my case to remain in this i call home, despite not having legal papers yet i call home, my heart."(catherine)(catherine) mora and his attorney say people shouldn't forget the more than 36-thousand other people who are still in detention facilities.
