(2-shot/vicki) we were thinking there's got to be some snow up on bay area peaks . we sent kron four's rob fladeboe to find out. your sotuh bay weather tour begins here atop 4-thousand foot mount hamilton in the diablo range east of san jose. chilly up here this afternoon, mid-30's i would say. there's been some rain here too and when that happens we generally see a little snow up here. but not this time, not much anyway. oh there's a little bit of a dusting here along the road but not much to speak off. the drive up here was a little sketchy though because of very poor visibility, especially through those hairpin turns along the last couple of miles before you get to the top elsewhere across the south bay we saw a lot of widely scattered showers. there was a report of snow on highway 101 in gilroy but it was almost certainly rain or hail. and there were a lot of rainbows spotted as well. this one popped out in the santa teresa neighborhood in south san jose. lots of pretty colors in this one. back up here on mount hamilton you could see a rain bow even of there was one for the fog. that is lick observatory right behind me but you can barely see it. and no snow up here
5:03 pm

(vicki) another big story tonight -- involving the anti-viral medication tamiflu. there are reports around the country that some flu patients are experiencing psychiatric side effects from the drug.(grant) today, kron four's philippe djegal spoke with a local doctor who explains warning signs parents
5:04 pm
and patients should look out for. (phlippe) hallucianations, depression and in some extremely rare occasions -- suicidal thoughts. those are all potential side effects of the anti-viral medication, tamiflu... says board certified pediatrician, doctor lionel herrera.lionel herrera/pediatrician- "we do have a few kids every year, that come in with significant headaches and fevers and they're the ones that we have to be a little more careful with when we give tamiflu." doctor herrera is based in pleasanton at tri-valley pediatrics. he says tamiflu is not a replacement for a flu shot. it's used to reduce the symptoms and severity of the flu...lionel herrera/pediatrician- "typically, the flu lasts approximately three to five days. with tamiflu, it shortens the duration of the symptoms by about one and a half days in most people." but for some people -- especially children with pre-exisiting conditions five years of age or younger... doctor herrera says the flu causes inflammation in the brain... and, taking tamiflu can cause psychiatric reactions for those patients. the parents of a toddler in texas say their son became aggressive after taking tamiflu.andrea wallen/mother- "when i walked in the room, i was greeted with him slapping
5:05 pm
me across the face, and then continuously smacking his head into the pillows, saying ouch, ouch ouch." if your kids complain of headaches or neck pain within the first 24 to 48 hours after taking tamiflu... doctor herrera says stop giving them the medicine. anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen should help... but if the pain is severe -- see a physician. he also adds that the side effects also don't appear to be permanent... and, typically go away shortly after the patient stops taking the tamiflu. in pleasanton, philippe djegal, kron four news. (vicki) we reached out to the maker of tamiflu for a response. we have not heard back yet... but the company did respond to our cnn affiliate in texas... ackowledging there have been reports of some of these bizarre side-effects while taking tamiflu, áandá also in
5:06 pm
patients who áandá also in taking tamiflu, áandá also in patients who flu. (grant) this year's flu season has been one of the worst in the last decade. 19 people have died in the bay area from the infection. and there have been at least 74 deaths in all of california. this number only accounts for people under the age of 65 who have died....so the number of total flu deaths is actually much higher. (vicki) the woman at the center of a bay-area wide sex scandal has dropped her final lawsuit. jasmine abuslin's attorney says the teen is tired of testifying. a judge dismissed the last pending lawsuit against the richmond police department last week. abuslin who is formerly known as celeste guap ... had sexual relations with several officers from multiple law enforcement agencies while working as a prostitute. she has already won a nearly one million dollar settlement against the city of oakland. (grant) big story today out of sacramento.... the governor's view of where california is now and headed. kron 4's capitol bureau chief kody liebowitz was there in the for governor brown's final state of the state address. gov. jerry brown, california "simply put, california is prospering." a final state address to california.. touting growth.gov. jerry brown, california "in just the last eight years alone, california's personal income has grown $845 billion and 2.8 million new jobs have been created. very few places in the world can match that record. (applause). and confidence from california voters..for bipartisan laws like the rainy day fund, the water bond and pension reform.gov. jerry brown, california "may not be the final one but it was there
5:11 pm
and you did it, republicans and democrats." but the governor also looked ahead in his speech. on environmental issues - he called back to wildfires from months earlier.. he said he plans to put together a task force of scientists and forest practitioners to look at ways of reducing the threat of wildfires. as for climate change the governor says the science is not in doubt.gov. jerry brown, california "all nations agree except one and that is solely because of one man: our current president." the governor also pushed an idea to create a california online college for a low-cost degree. a push that appeared, for now, to get bipartisan applause in a room full of lawmakers.asm. phil ting "it is clear that we have to find new ways of doing things. we can't do education the same ways that we have been doing for the last 100 years." but not lawmakers agreed with the governor's speech. some wanted him to talk rising costs and an unaffordable housing market. asm. jim patterson "he doesn't
5:12 pm
want to talk about the fact that everything costs more in california than most any place else. because of their taxes, fees, policies and everything else. even the cost of living." david chiu, sf chair housing committee "when you have the sixth largest economy that is california with the highest poverty rate in the united states that includes housing costs, we have work to do." kody leibowitz, @kodyleibowitz "now i spoke with republican assemblymember catherine baker. she said there's a lot that republican members can work on with the governor this session. bipartisanship, one of the ways the governor says california can lead by example this session. in the capitol kody leibowitz, back to you." (grant) two thieves cause a big set back to one family owned business in concord. you can see the burglary unfold here in this surveillance camera video. (vicki) kron4's maureen kelly talked to the plumber who's van you see being pilfered, who says the crooks wipes out about a third of his livelihood. tuesday morning patrick
5:16 pm
stanton came out to find all of the doors of his plumbing company's van ajar...and found thieves had gotten away with some very expensive tools they got all of the cordless tools all of the power tools everything they even stole my seat organizer have my schedulebecause he has a high def security camera pointed at his van....the entire operation was captured on video. in addition to taking 8-grand worth of tools, the theives also did about 2 grand in damage to the van ignition as they tried to steal that too.but the most concerning part to patrick and his family is that this all happened right outside their north concord townhouse. it's scary to have your safe space no pun intended violated like that so close where your children are sleeping it puts a panic in your gut that you're not sure how to deal with so we're working on the shock of it all. obviously safety is a concern and we're gonna take some more preventative measures to keep our family safe and keep our business rollingthe video of the crime was posted on the stanton plumbing facebook page and shared over 1600 times already....and now in the hands of concord pd. the stanton's are hopeful that the men, who can be seen very clearly, are caught and punished for what they did to their family business.... it's tough it pretty much races the emergency fund the hardest part again is getting on the road and getting things done
5:17 pm
and without the specialty tools obviously takes longer we didn't have to move money around to buy new stuff, you can operate(standup) patrick is grateful that the thieves were not able to steal the van. because of that happened it would've been a total loss for his company one he's not sure he would be able to recover from maureen kelly kron4 news (vicki) police in the east bay are looking for a person they say shot an otter at least six times. these are x-rays of the otter after he was taken to the lindsey wildlife experience in walnut creek on sunday. staff say it looks like the otter was
5:18 pm
shot several times with a b-b gun. when it was found... the otter had missing and broken teeth and was blind in one eye. local residents are upset.jenny delama/concord resident: "i mean, this might be bad to say but most of the time i feel more compassion for animals than i do humans because they are defenseless, because they do depend on us to take care of them and take care of their environment and not hurt them. it's just maddening." the otter was found at the shadelands business park in walnut creek. experts say they had no choice but to euthanize the otter. it was having trouble breathing... lethargic.. and if released back into the wild it could no longer hunt for prey. (grant) tonight president trump says he's open to granting some "dreamers" american citizenship within the next ten years. but the white house says it'll support that plan only if congress spends billions of dollars to strengthen border security.. kron 4's white house correspondent mark meredith is on capitol hill with the latest florida senator bill nelson says democrats are confident there will be a bi-partisan deal to protect nearly 700-thousand younger undocumented immigrants from deportation."if we pass it in the senate with a substantial vote, i think that's going to put a lot of pressure on the house"president trump also appears ready to add pressure. before leaving for switzerland, the president told reporters daca recipients could quote "morph" into full u-s citizens with 10 to 12 years. but white house aides
5:20 pm
say the president's "framework" for immigration reform is still being developed.and that any deal on "daca" must also include significant spending - roughly 25 billion dollars - for a border wall. texas senator john cornyn says he expects to learn all of the president's demands early next week.and that congress will have no choice but to listen. ""this bill can't become law without the president's signature, so the president's views are not irrelevant."the president made building a border wall his top campaign promise.and in a political twist, former democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine says he's now leaning towards reluctantly supporting the effort. "look i don't think that's the best way to spend money, but if i get protection for dreamers, then i'm willing to do somethings that aren't the absolute best"congress has until march 5th to make a decision if it hopes to protect dreamers from being eligible for deportation.in washington, i'm mark meredith. strauss. "should we panic?" i would say no, it is well within the realm of normal. that is not to say we won't have more. we live in earthquake country. we need to be prepared for earthquakes that can happen. strauss pointed to quakes like the one in napa as a prime example of what can happen when we least expect it and the damage left in the wake of a quake. she adds, that we all need to be aware of the reality of where we live. strauss. you can have small quakes that lead up to large ones. you can have clusters. you have them then they stop. it is whatever mother nature has in store for us. strauss adds, being prepared is the best advise for an earthquake. strauss. have a go bag, drop cover. and lastly, strauss says, take seriously those tsunami warnings - like the ones earlier in the week issued for the west coast. strauss. you don't want to be the person looking at google to try and find out where to go once a warning comes, you want to already know. in menlo park at usgs, terisa estacio kron four news.
