reported flu deaths... and we are still waiting to hear back from san mateo county. (vicki) in the south bay... hard decisions lay ahead for the cash-strapped oak grove school district in san jose. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports now, the district is seeking to balance the budget by closing schools. these are anxious days for parents here at baldwin elementary in south san jose's oak grove school district. baldwin is one of four schools that may be closed as the district is struggling to keep up with rising costs associated with declining enrollment coupled with payroll and pension obligations. parents are worried says the secretary of the home and school club. augusto/secretary of home and school club '...it's my sincere hope that between the district and the board that they get to all the information, our committee did a great job in making a recommendation but i believe it is just a component of the over all decision...."a committee of parents and other stakeholders recommended that while no middle schools would be shuttered, four elementary schools would be considered for closing. they are baldwin, del roble, gilder and

(grant) another big story tonight. six members of a san jose family have now been charged with murder...in the fatal stabbing of a bar security guard. it happened at "tres gringos cabo cantina" in february 20-17. according to prosecutors, 35-year old frank navarro was stabbed five times, including once in the neck, after intervening in a dispute over a confiscated i-d card. navarro was the president of the "east-ridge little league," and he coached baseball and football at overfelt high school. if convicted, joseph esquivel, percella esquivel, santos

trevino, robert ruiz and andrew cervantes face life in prison. (grant) happening now... san bruno police are looking for a man involved with two seperate incidents of indecent exposure. the incidents took place this week in parking lots near the shops at tanforan. according to police, a man asked people on two different occasions for directions. when they approached the man's vehicle, both victims say they saw him masturbating inside his car. this is a survellance photo of the car -- what was described to police as a white jeep cherokee. authorities can only describe the suspect as a hispanic male in his twenties. (vicki) in the east bay... crews are working to repair a water main break in berkeley. this is near the corner of cornell avenue and gilman street. a pipe that was installed in 19-26 broke at around 9:00 this morning. water service was interupted for over 50 people. east bay mud and p-g-and-e are out working to fix the break... it is

(grant) another big story.. a mother pleads for help - as she and her family struggle after her husband and father of four taken by ice when he dropped off a daughter at daycare. today, a rally was held at ice headquaters in san francisco. (estacio)"fernando came here for a chance to have something better." a mother's painful story - and a fight to keep her family together. on friday, lourdes barraza told a large group gathered in front of federal immigration and customs enforcement or ice headquarters in san francisco about that fateful day back in october of 2017, when ice agents grabbed her husband after he dropped off their four year old dauhter at a san jose daycare.barraza says her four year old daughter now suffering from nightmares

"the berkeley college republicans and "young america's foundation" have alleged that cal restricts speakers with conservative viewpoints. the lawsuit was filed in april after a scheduled appearance by conservative firebrand ann coulter didn't happen. the u.s. department of justice said a federal judge should reject a request by the school to dismiss the lawsuit. (grant) we have some new statistics this evening on car break-ins in san francisco. the associated the associated press reports police have made arrests in just 13 of the more than 81-thousand cases of auto breakins reported áonlineá over the past seven years. there are an average of 85 car breakins reported each day in san francisco. the s-f-p-d encourages áonlineá filing of reports -- since there often isn't any evidence to collect at the scene. we spoke with s-f-p-d investigations commander greg mceachern...wh o gave us very different numbers when factoring in

áallá reports of auto break- ins. (grant) police also say they're trying to curb break-ins in the city by increasing foot patrols and having more units focus on property crime investigations. (vicki) in the east bay... a car crashes into a home in san ramon... and the driver runs away from the scene. it happened in san ramon earlier today at vera cruz drive and montevideo drive. police say an officer was attempting to pull over a driver for speeding... and the driver initially stopped, but again. the officer did not chase the driver because there was heavy fog in the area. police say the driver then crashed into the home, and ran away. police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect and

put montevideo elementary school on lockdown. police arrested the suspect a short time later. (vicki) bart is considering changes to parking fees at some of its busiest stations. kron4's lydia pantazes went to walnut creek to show us what that means for riders. one option being considered is variable parking rates depending on what time of the day you park. higher parking rates would be charged during peak hours. some board members said this would make it too expensive for commuters. one way they could track usage would be to implement automated license plate reader technology... which has some people concerned about privacy. the issue was discussed by the bart board of directors at their meeting on thursday morning. the board is also looking at ways to increase available parking parking lots fill up as early as 6 a.m., making it difficult for many commuters to access some bart stations, and there is a lengthy wait-list for permits for reserved spaces. we spoke with a bart rider who says the lack of parking doesn't affect him.

(grant) stockton police have arrested a 12-year-old boy accused of trying to rob a gas station at gun point. the attempted robbery happened monday. police say the boy pointed the gun at an employee... demanding money. the employee screamed, frightening the boy... who then ran away. the attempted robbery was caught on surveillance video... allowing police to identify the boy. he was arrested at his middle school. (grant) new information tonight on the riverside county children allegedly held captive by their parents. we are learning more about the oldest turpin son.

prosecutors say he attended a community college in riverside county. the son-- in his twenties-- attended classes from 20-14 until at least 20-16. prosecutors say his mother would bring him to school and wait outside his classes for him. according to a college spokeswoman-- he was on the president's honor roll for two semester. he earned a's in several classes including algebra and public speaking. (vicki) high speed rail - it's a project highly touted by the governorone he pushed again in his state of the state on thursday. it's also one with a growing costs... now some lawmakers are demanding an official inspection of the train's finances. capitol bureau reporter kody leibowitz reports. (:09)gov. jerry brown "yes it cost a lot of money, but it is still cheaper and more convenient than expanding airports - which nobody wants to do - and building new freeways." pushing the total cost of the project to an estimated 67 billion - or 27 billion more than voters approved ten years ago. now lawmakers are calling for an examination of the money riding on the bullet train. (;04)asm. jim patterson (r- fresno) "this audit that i'm request has to hold them accountable and i think it will." this week - fresno republican assemblymember jim patterson and san jose democratic senator jim beall - wrote a letter to the joint legsilative audit committee - calling for an audit. (:07) sen. jim beall (d-san jose) "part of it is to an audit and get an idea of the financial situation and the capability of the authority to do these things." beall - who heads the transportation committee says the plan is to

police in the east bay are looking for a driver who lead c-h-p officers on a chase. (vicki) the officers were then involved in a crash with an innocent bystander. kron 4's will tran reports from hayward. will tran/hayward-the pursuit only lasted a few milesstarted on tennyson ave on northbound 880 and you can see the freeway therethe suspect got off on west a street.the officers had their lights and sirens on but unfortunately they slammed into a bystander's car at the intersection.the other car didn't see the officers.the collision sent the two officers and the other driver to the hospital with minor injuries.authorities say they wanted them to be checked out as a precaution.because the chp cruiser was damaged... the officers could no longer continue with their pursuitby the time the other officers arrived to the scene the suspect was long gone.chp is still working on a description of the car and the driver.at this point they're not saying why they started the pursuitin hayward will tran kron 4 news (grant) police have arrested two

people who they say rammed a stolen car... into a police cruiser... in san leandro this morning. it happened near the westgate shopping center just before 8:00. police say an officer approached the reportedly stolen vehicle-- at which point the car took off...ending up on tudor court -- a dead end. the driver then turned around and ran the vehicle into a patrol car that had been following them -- before crashing into a telephone pole. officers arrested the male driver --- who is expected to face multiple felony charges -- and his female passenger. no one was injured in the crash. (grant) c-h-p officer martin lendway is recovering in the hospital tonight... after he was injured in a d-u-i crash. contra costa c-h-p tweeted this picture out today. they say officer lendway is recovering well. he was injured in a crash on highway-4 in concord earlier this month. a driver slammed into a pickup truck...

(vicki) a major gun bust in california. police in the central valley seized hundreds of high-powered weapons from one home... and they say a man was selling the guns to criminals. patrick nelson has the story. fresno, california - federal atf agents and local law enforcement team up to take 221 guns off the street in a search at one fresno home. it's being described as one of the biggest gun busts in fresno's history. investigators say 39-year-old james bowden is a convicted felon who illegally possessed the guns and was also illegally selling them to anyone who would pay including gang members. (grant) officials were forced to cancel national guard training while federal lawmakers battled over the budget. our d.c. correspondent brie jackson reports...the three-day shutdown, coupled with uncertainty about the budget, are having a real impact on the military and its readiness. because every training day that goes unused directly impacts the readiness of those organizations.readiness for the guard requires 24 days of training drills each year which includes combat courses and exercises needed to save lives at home and abroad. robinson says making up for missed time due to shutdowns puts an extra burden on those who serve. military officials say funding uncertainties keep organizations like the national guard in limbo when planning for the future. servicemembers are now urging congress reach a budget-deal. sen. tim scott/ south carolina everytime you have a short term budgte you cripple the ability to plan long-term senator tim scott shares the concerns of servicemembers and says congress is making progress on a bi-partisan spending bill.tim scott: our military deserves a five year deal if not longer. we'd settle for a two year deal federal lawmakers have until feb 8th to avoid another shutdown and to help give guardsmen the resources to be "always ready, always there ".

now... san bruno police are looking for a man involved with two separate incidents of indecent exposure this week. they happened in parking lots near the shops at tan-foran. officers say a man asked people on two different occasions for directions. when they approached his car -- both victims say the man exposed himself. this is a surveillance photo of the car -- described as a white jeep cherokee. authorities say the suspect is a hispanic man in his twenties. (steve) police in the east bay are looking for a driver who lead c-h-p officers on a chase that ended in a collision with an innocent bystander's car. the pursuit started on tennyson avenue on northbound 8-80 in hayward. after the suspect exited on "west a street" -- the pursuing c-h-p vehicle slammed into the bystander's car at the intersection. both c-h-p officers in the car and the other driver were hospitalized with minor injuries. by the time backup arrived on the scene -- the suspect's car was gone. c-h-p is still working on a description of the car and the driver.

(steve) in the south bay... six members of a san jose family have now been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a bar security guard. it happened at the "tres gringos cabo cantina" in february 20-17. according to prosecutors, 35-year old frank navarro was stabbed five times, including once in the neck, after intervening in a dispute over a confiscated i-d card. navarro was the president of the "eastridge little league," as well as coaching baseball and football

(catherine) in the east bay... a car crashed into a home in san ramon today...and the driver ran away from the scene. it happened in at vera cruz drive and montevideo drive. police say an officer was trying to pull over a driver for speeding... and the driver initially stopped, but then sped off again. the officer didn't chase him because there was heavy fog in the area. police say the driver then crashed into the home, and ran away. officers set up a perimeter to search for the man and put montevideo elementary school on lockdown. the man was arrested a short time later.
