(catherine) just in to kron four... police are trying to figure out what caused a car to crash into a y-m-c-a portable classroom at castro valley elementary school. these are pictures of the scene from the fire department. the car drove into the building this afternoon on san miguel avenue. the portable classroom is in a shared parking lot. the driver of the car has minor injuries and there was only minor damage to the building. (grant/landing/vo) across the bay area, and along the 880 corridor near fremont in particular... vehicle smash and grab break-ins have gotten so bad...that repair shops are running out of replacement glass. tonight, as kron four's rob fladeboe reports, polcie say they're now making progress. this man, 28 year old carlos humberto paz, of oakland, is the key figure in what the

authorities had named 'operation million dollar baby." paz and eight other people from oakland, san jose and san francisco are facing charges in connection with a scheme to steal laptop computers and ship them to vietnam. led by fremont police, the multi agency unit linked a rash of vehicle break ins and laptop thefts dating back to december, to an oakland street gang that hit commercial shopping centers and parking lots across the bay area and beyond. the break in the case came when carlos paz, the alleged fence, or broker of the stolen merchandise, was linked to a storage container in san jose where the laptops were re-sold to other co-conspirators for shipment to vietnam in two different ways. lt. mike tegner/fremont police"...we sspotted several people loading stolen electronics into the back of the storage container and got a warrant and searched the storage container and found out it was headed for vietnam and then we intercepted two suspects who had more than 18 bags of luggage and they were trying to board an airliner that was bound for vietnam..." a large

street. the stolen credit cards were actually used monday to purchase more than $200 bucks of merchandise at a cvs store in novato and at other businesses. (catherine) in sonoma county. a woman is dead... after being hit by a sonoma-marin rail transit train. the woman has not been publicly identified... as for what happened - officials say it appears that all safety mechanisms were working at that crossing. and the case is now being investigated as an apparent- suicide. the collision happened around seven thirty this morning near railroad tracks in the hearn avenue area of south santa rosa. the incident...marks the first person killed on the tracks of the north bay transit system. (catherine) new information tonight on the deadly plane crash in the east bay. investigators have identified the pilot as christopher rampoldt of martinez. they say he was flying the small-engine plane when it crashed in concord on monday morning. the cessna 152 left buchanan field airport around nine-30 in the

morning but later crashed at the military ocean terminal. it's believed there were no witnesses on the ground....and federal investigators are still trying to figure out what went wrong. the n-t-s-b is expected to release a preliminary report in the next couple of weeks. (grant) last year's deadly wildfires have nearly reached 12-billion dollars in insurance claims. the majority of those claims come from the tubbs fire that destroyed parts of napa and sonoma counties....including so much of santa rosa. 2017 wildfires were the most expensive in state history. and those totals may continue to rise as more people finish their paperwork. (grant) p-g & e is reminding its customers affected by the wildfires that the company is trying to help people. being offered: bill relief and payment assistance... pg&e will also help with new or temporary construction of electric service. the electric company also says customers who lost property will not be charged for up to one year... and their account

(catherine) a train full of republican lawmakers headed from washington d.c. to west virginiacollided with a truck today.. one person has died....and a member of congress suffered a possible concussion. (catherine) the woman called the 'serial stowaway' was in a chicago courtroom today...marilyn hartman is accused of repeatedly sneaking onto planes without a ticket. these are sketches from this morning's hearing.... and video of hartman coming and going from the cook county jail. a judge today ruled that the 66-year-old must remain held without bail and get more psychiatric testing. she used to live in the bay area -- and famously managed to sneak onto a plane at the san jose airport in 2014. her most recent arrest happened sunday after she was spotted at o'hare airport...afterbeing ordered to stay away. a few days earlier - she had sneaked onto a flight to london. according to court records, hartman says she suffers from depression and takes prescriptionmedication - but has in the past been ruled fit to stand trial. meteorologist lawrence karnow. lawrence karnow: it was a gorgeous day with spring-like temperatures all across the bay area. temperatures are running over 10 degrees above normal for this time of year. of course we started with the super blue blood moon which was an amazing sight in the skies above this morning. it's still very mild outside but temperatures will cool off quickly. on the radar there's no rain to be found. on the satellite image you can see high pressure sitting over californina to bring sunny and mild temperatures. the storms continue to follow the jet stream well to the north leaving us with warm, almost spring-like weather. tomorrow will be another mild to warm day with highs in the mid 60s to low 70s. offshore winds will strengthen on friday and into the weekend bringing even warmer and possible record breaking temperatures to the bay area. we may see a few clouds late sunday and into monday with slight cooling at the beginning of the week. dry and warm weather is expected to continue well into next week.

new safety precautions at the oakland coliseum... they're extending the protective netting behind the plate -- all the way to the far ends of both dugouts. several other teams have taken similar steps....because of concern of fans being hit and injured. and the move is being recommended by major league baseball in 2015 a class action lawsuit was filed over the lack of netting at the coliseum and other ballparks... that same year - a fan was almost killed at boston's fenway park after getting hit by the broken bat of an a's player. (catherine) a big story we are following tonight... stanford university is canceling plans to put a plaque on campus -- where a woman was sexually assaulted by a former school swimmer. the decision was reached after there was no agreement on the quote for the plaque. stanford says it's deferring to the woman... who decided not to participate ...after the school rejected two quotes she offered. and she rejected three quotes

suggested by the university. a friend of the victim says stanford rushed the plaque... it was meant to acknowledge the sexual assault...and to recognize the victim's "voice and experience". (catherine) leaders of silicon valley's largest city... have voted to remove a statue of christopher columbus from san jose's city hall lobby. they now have six weeks to find a new home for the statue...or it will be put in storage. some residents were offended by the columbus statue..claiming it glorified the brutal treatment of native americans. but others in the italian-american community found the move disturbing and disappointing. this month san francisco...became the latest city to replace the columbus day holiday...with indigenous peoples day. on today's big announcement close to 8-thousand marijuana convictions dating back to the year 1975 are eligable to be either resentenced or completely expunged. that is the announcement made wednesday by san francisco district attorney george gascon sotthe d.a.'s office will use proposition 64, which decriminalized the possession and recreational use of marijuana for adults and retroactively apply the law to people convicted of pot related crimes in the county of san franciscosotsot

(catherine) california might soon have banks... just for marijuana money. it's a idea being kicked around by state officials. it would be a taxpayer- backed bank.... designed to handle what could be billions of dollars generated by the state's legal pot industry. the state treasurer says his office will have to consider how all this would work. right now - a lot of banks do not want to handle marijuana money. they're concerned about legal problems with the federal government. a state study on the subject is expected to take about a year. (grant) a san francisco teacher is accused of child endangerment... after he was seen dangling a student over a balcony at an elementary school. andres tobar is a kindergarten teacher at marshall elementary in the mission district. he was arrested tuesday on a felony child endangerment charge. the school district says that back in december... tobar was

seen holding a student over the balcony on the second floor of the school. lots of parents and students say tobar teacher is a good man... and they want him back. (grant) the san francisco unified school district released a statement... saying many community members have expressed their support for mr.tobar... but he will not be returning to marshall elementary school. (catherine) four miniature horses ... and a donkey are dead after being attacked by dogs. it happened earlier this month at happy hollow park and zoo in san jose ... . one of the dogs suspected in the attack was captured at the zoo ... and the second dog was captured outside the zoo. a park spokeswoman says a third dog is still out there

- but it's not believed to be a threat. if the owner of the other two dogs doesn't come forward -- the dogs will be euthanized (grant) president trump laid out his pitch for a comprehensive immigration plan during the state of the union address. while the plan has been greeted warmly by republican leadership, it is getting attacked by both hardline republicans and liberal democrats - for very different reasons. kristen holmes reports from washington. pres. donald trump: tonight i call upon all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people. president donald trump opened with a message of unity at last night's state of the union address. but his immigration plan was met with mixed reviews. among the most divisive were his comments about the ms-13 gang... pres. donald trump: i am calling on congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed ms-13 and other criminal gangs to break into our country.some democrats felt he was trying to link the criminal group with daca recipients.the president's immigration plan includes a

alarm over the expected release of a secret republican memo... accusing the f-b-i and d-o-j of abusing their surveillance powers. the f-b-i issued a statement saying: "the f-b-i was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it. as expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo's accuracy." the memo was written at the direction of committee chair devin nunes of california. (catherine) apple is getting hit with questions from government officials over software updates that slowed down i-phones. apple says the updates were not done to intentionally shorten the life of products made before the i- phone 8 and ten. the security and exchange commission and the department of justice are also collecting information from apple. the involvement of the s-e-c

(grant) the u-s centers for disease control and prevention is looking for a new leader. c-d-c director doctor brenda fitzgerald resigned from her position today, just six months after being selected for the post. in a statement, the department of health and human services blamed what it called her "complex financial interests" for fitzgerald's decision. the move comes one day after politico

reported that fitzgerald bought tobacco stock after becoming c-d-c director. that investment goes against the mission of the c-d-c. (grant) equifax will offer its free credit protection deal for five more months. the company made its initial offer after revealing last year that personal information of more than 145 million people was exposed during the breach. that offer was set to expire yesterday, but equifax is extending it to june 30th. experts advise that consumers also freeze their credit at the other two credit bureaus -- experian and transunion, which may still carry a fee. - a north carolina man says his dog suffered eye hemorrhages after a grooming visit... a vet told him that it will be at least a couple of weeks before the problem clears up. and said a neck leash was clearly too tight... petsmart issued a statement denying that the problem happened during grooming..although it has adopted a new policy to change the way it grooms 5 dog breeds....includingold english bulldogs like 'gunnar.'. the owner said petsmart offered to cover medical expenses, but wanted him tosign a non-disclosure agreement and take down his facebook page on what happened. : michael batchelor - i don't want anything from them. i just want to get the word out to the public. i was angry. i was really angry. it's really heartbreaking. in 2016- in the bay area - a couple said their 1-year-old dachshund was foaming at the mouth with blood and then died - after a routine nail clipping at a petsmart in san mateo. testing showed the dog had been strangled. the groomer was charged with

(steve) new at six. a woman is recovering tonight.... after she was attakced by a pitbull in vallejo. a warning -- the image you're about to see is graphic -- even though we've blurred our her injury for television. it happened january 19th on broadway street. there the woman was shutting the hood of her car...when she was surprised by a pitbull. the dog jumped and bit both of her arms. the victim stayed in the hospital three weeks... and needed three surgeries just to get her well enough to go home. doctors say the woman needs another surgery for skin grafts to close a big wound on her left arm. no word on if the pitbull's owner...has been contacted by police. (steve) also new at 6... police have arrested a suspect with outstanding warrants for narcotics. the arrest came on the 600 block of eddy in the tenderloin. a search revealed the man was in possession of 57 bindles of cocaine and heroin. he is being held at the tenderloin station for possession for sale and warrants. stolen going back a couple of months, there is a real possibility it is in the hands of fremont police right now. as kron four's rob fladeboe reports, police have busted several people in connection with an alleged conspiracy.... to re-sell thousands of stolen computers for shipment overseas. this man, 28 year old carlos humberto paz, of oakland, is the key figure in what the authorities had named 'operation million dollar baby." paz and eight other people from oakland, san jose and san francisco are facing charges in connection with a scheme to steal laptop computers and ship them to vietnam. led by fremont police, the multi agency unit linked a rash of vehicle break ins and laptop thefts dating back to december, to an oakland street gang that hit commercial shopping centers and parking lots across the bay area and beyond. the break in the case came when carlos paz, the alleged fence, or broker of the stolen merchandise, was linked to a storage container in san jose
