(steve) another big story we are following tonight... a volunteer tutor for an after-school program in mountain view is being held without bail tonight... after being arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two male students. and tonight we are learning that the 26 year old suspect was also a member of the board of directors at the sanyu learning center. kelly spoke to police who say the suspect volunteered at other places in the community.... and they believe there could be more victims out there. on friday evening there was a report from young boy that reported to his family that he was touched sexually by mr. lou mountain view police then went to the sanyu learning center which is located behind, but is not associated with this church on south springer road. their investigation turned up a second alleged victim and now yizhuang liu, who goes by name john, is set to be arraigned tomorrow on two counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 with force, and one count of continous sexual assault.the sunyu learning center is an private after school program....their website says they teach chinese language to kids ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, as well as math and other electives. mountain view police dectective marco garcia says the 26th year old cupertino resident was not only a volunteer tutor but he also served on the board of directors. it is very significant and is also volunteering at a church. through investigation also through other organizations that he's a volunteer and that he has had opportunity to be with some of these young boys on his ownpolice are still investigating the case and don't yet have the names of all of the places lui was

belived to be volunteering.the operator of the school declined to be interviewed but a teacher who did not want to go on camera says lui had been with the school about two years. she told me she doesn't want to believe the accusations against lui....saying he was good with the students and that she trusts him.police say they discovered that lui was also communicating with other young boys using a gaming app called discord....they will be reaching out to the families of those potential victims as their investigation continues. maureen kelly kron4 news. voters will now decide the fate of embattled judge aaron persky. (vicki) a recall effort has been underway after his controversial sentencing of stanford athlete brock turner-- who is convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. (steve) kron four's rob fladeboe has been following this story for months... he joins us live now from san jose with the latest developments. (rob live) the bar is fairly high to recall an elected judge but supporters of the recall gathered some 95,000 signatures of support and today they got the official nod that their effort to recall judge aaron persky will be on the june ballot. recall supporters cheer advocates of recalling judge persky cheered moments after the santa clara county board of supervisors ordered the measure to be placed on the june 5th ballot. supporters believe that judge persky was too lenient in the sentencing of former stanford swimmer

brock turner, who sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman after a fraternity party, according to stanford law professor michele dauber. michele dauber/recall judge persky campaign "...it's just very clear that the voters of this county have lost confidence in judge persky's ability to be fair in cases involvingviolence against women, particularly when the perpetrators are privileged college athletes..." the supervisors obligatory action sending the measure to voters was preceded by impassioned pleas of support. but a group known as "voices against the recall," warned that that the effort is a threat to judicial independence says former judge ladoris cordell.ladoris cordell/voices against the recall"....they are going to thin twice about doing what they think is right because of fear that they are going to be targeted with misinformation, lies and distortions and end up in the same situation judge persky is in..."recall supporters says that judge

(steve) back to our breaking news tonight.. a gas leak is now capped in san francisco.. after people were forced from their homes. (vicki) kron 4's charles clifford is on the scene-- charles what is the latest? a gas leak had prompted evacuations in san francisco near alamo square park tuesday afternoon, firefighters said. but at around 5 p.m., the leak has been capped and the evacuations have been lifted. this was happening in the area of mccallister and scott. it broke out at around 3:22 p.m. firefighters said to avoid the area, as 12 buildings were being evacuated.no serious injuries have been reported. pg&e crews were hoping to finish repairs by 5:30 p.m. (vicki) in the north bay... tonight we are learning new information about

the mother and son who are accused of running a prostitution ring. police say david romesburg and his mother fay were operating the prostitution ring in rohnert park for over 10 years. (vicki) in the north bay... tonight we are learning new information about the mother and son who are accused of running a prostitution ring. police say david romesburg and his mother fay were operating the prostitution ring in rohnert park for over 10 years. during that time-- they employed about 150 women. police spoke to eight of the

women who worked for the mother and son. one of them said she was underage when they recruited her-- and another says she was sexually assaulted during her interview. the romesburgs were arrested back in january and now face multiple charges. (vicki) in the east bay. a five-year-old girl is recovering...after she was bitten by a pit bull. the incident happened sunday morning on the owl alley trail at point pinole regional shoreline in richmond. police say the 5-year-old girl... walked passed the pit bull and it's owner...when she was suddenly bitten by the dog. the dog's owner was able to get the pitbull off the child...who suffered abrasions to the left side of her stomach. it is unknown if the dog...was wearing a leash during the attack. the pitbull has been placed in a quarantine...until the investigation is complete (steve) the illegality of sideshows has become potentially more dangerous for drivers, spectators and police. guns are now being fired in the air during these events...and police say the problem is no longer found in one city. it has

(catherine) we're becoming a nation of renters. the national rental=search company 'rent cafe' says in the decade after 2006, the number of renters increased by more than 23=million ... that's while fewer than 700=thousand

americans became new homeowners. almost a quarter of america's cities changed from homeowner=ma jority to renter=majority.and some of the most dramatic changes were here in the bay area. fremont, the bay area's fourth biggest city, saw its renter population jump by nearly one=third since 2006.only five other cities nationwide had bigger increases.in the bay area, oakland has the biggest proportion of renters, nearly 60 percent.san francisco is right behind with 56 percent. san jose saw the biggest net gain in the renting population; more than 96,800 people since 2006. but unlike san francisco and oakland, it remains an owner-majority market.real estate experts say the trend is fueled by a preference of young workers to rent instead of own ... as well as the new tax law reducing incentives for home buyers.the tech boom is having a major impact on rental prices in silicon valley.the real estate site zumper dotcom

(steve) happening now. state officials have removed more than one million tons of fire-related debris from areas throughout northern california...affected by the october 20-17 wildfires. crews say debris removal in santa rosa's severely damaged coffey park neighborhood..is

100 percent complete. over 12 hundred properties were cleared of debris. authorities say another notable milestone...the completion of debris removal in lake county...where over 22 thousand tons of debris was removed. (vicki) a new report indicates california should be using controlled burns to better manage wildfires. mike luery reports. a growing concern a history of wildfires burning out of control in the sierra and now there are more dead trees in the forest adding fuel to the fire. terri hardy/acting executive director, the little hover commission:"over the course of our study, we started with a 102 million dead trees in the sierra and now there are 129 million dead trees." in a year long study the little hoover commission concluded california is doing it all wrong. "i think we've seen a century of mismanagement." mismanaging fires by trying to suppress them instead of letting them burn naturally. instead the commission says we should be reducing dead trees by

fighting fire with fire. and it turns out they say we're burning money too. "if you look at the difference in the costs for prescribed fire it's $200 an acre as opposed to $800 an acre fighting wildfires." that's why this inmate crew today is eliminating dead trees and underbrush in a controlled burn at auburn state recreation area. cal fire capt. joe madsen: "the more fuel that there is the hotter it burns. and so it's important for us to have less fuel so that we can get closer in to actually put our fire lines in." and in recreation areas like this one with majestic vantage points overlooking the foothills, wildfires are a constant threat scott liske/supervising state park ranger:"with a recreation area as popular as auburn, we're looking at a million visitors a year. the potential for someone being careless with fire is there." and that's why cal fire is working actively with rural residents to create at least 100 feet of space surrounding their homes where flames can't reach them.cal fire unit chief george morris iii:"we have an aggressive goal of doing 250,000 defensible space inspections, as partnered with landowners to take care of their own fuel reduction efforts."

(steve) meantime... here's a look at what else is making news tonight in your neighborhood. an important vote tonight in the east bay... the alameda city council is scheduled to vote on a proposal to install license plate readers. it's an effort to reduce crime in the city. police are hoping to install 13 license

plate readers... one pointing at each lane heading into or out of alameda. the city council meeting is at 7:00 tonight. (steve) oakland international airport is now offering non stop flights to rome. the flight norwegian air flight takes a little over 12 hours. the service will operate two times per week on a boeing 787 dreamliner. this is the first nonstop bay area service to rome...since 2001. (vicki) in the south bay... firefighters put out a fire at a homeless encampment in san jose this afternoon. it happened just before 2:00 near interstate 2-80 at the saratoga avenue off-ramp. the fire spread to a few trees-- but crews were able to get a handle on it. the cause is under investigation. (vicki) happening tomorrow in the south bay... it's the "give kids a smile" event. dentists will give free dental screenings to kids in 26 santa clara county schools... and seven boys and girls clubs. the dentists are visiting the schools over the next three days. studies show that the most chronic illness school-age children face is tooth decay.

(steve) in the north bay. a woman is behind bars tonight...accused of having a physical confrontation with police. it happened around two yesterday afternoon on tarwater road in santa rosa. deputies say a woman was swearing and yelling at passing cars. when police confronted her... the suspect bit the deputy's hand.. punched him in the chest...and tried to to attack him with a broom. she was arrested after a 30-minute standoff. s(steve) and police are searcing for a suspect...in connection with burglarizing a car in petaluma...and stealing credit cards. these are surveillance images of the suspect. the burglary occurred in west petaluma. the suspect made off with the victim's walllet ...and purchased over a grand worth of merchandise...using the victim's credit cards. (vicki) on the peninsula... four people are behind bars after police say they burglarized a business and then led officers on a pursuit. it happened last night at the bridgepointe shopping center in san mateo. police spotted the suspected burglars and tried to pull them over-- but the driver lead police on a chase.

continue to refuse to make wedding cakes for same sex couples..(steve) catherine heenan is here with details on a case that originated in bakersfield.. (catherine) the case involves 'tastries bakery' in bakersfield... and the owner who said that being required to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple would violate her christian beliefs.. her attorney argued that cathy miller's right to free expression of religion -- trumpedthe argument that she violated a state anti- discrimination law. today a kern county judge agreed....but said his ruling was tied closely to the fact that millerwas being asked to create a cake for an event....calling it artistic expression. the couple who sued haven't commented yet. they got a lot of support on social media when they initially complained about what happened. the decision comes as the u.s. supreme court prepares to rule on the case of a colorado

baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. vicki and steve? (steve) are pension costs becoming unsustainable? that's what california cities are saying - according to a new study.(vicki) our capitol bureau reporter kody leibowitz is on this story tonight. kody - you spoke with the lobbying group that put together this study. why do they believe there's a problem brewing? (kody)kody leibowitz, @kodyleibowitz "well - league of california cities - the group that put together this study -- says it comes down to a few factors retroactive benefits in the late 90s - early 2000s.. investment losses after the great recession - and cost of living adjustments the group says - it all means more money for pensions could cost cities some services. - of study the league of california cities says pension costs are becoming unsustainable. in a new study -- the group claims cities expect to spend - on average - close to 16 percent of their general fund budgets on retirement costs by 20-24 dane hutchings, league of california cities

system this session.for now live in the capitol, kody leibowitz (insert station id tag)" (steve) onto your market update.. one day after its historic loss, the dow jones industrial average roared back up today the dow finished today's trading day up 567-points. that's the fourth-largest single-day point gain in history. the rise is a huge swing from yesterday's 11-hundred-and-75 point loss. the plunge was the index's worst day in more than six years. analysts say the results today may be a sign from investors that the u-s economy remains strong. (vicki) in the south bay... two deadly shootingsjust blocks from each other in san jose. and as kron 4's lydia pantazes reports... they happened only hours apart. police say at 2:28 this morning san jose police

officers responded to a person shot on the 300 block of keyes st. in san jose. when officers got here they found an adult male with at least one gunshot wound.he died at the scene.the identity of the victim has not been released. police are asking for help identifying the person or people responsible.we also talked to an employee at a business nearby who did not want to talk on camera.he came to the scene because he was asked to show police surveillance video from his business.this incident happened about a mile from another incident last night also here in san jose. that shooting happened on east alma ave and south first street in san jose.police responded to multiple shots fired right before 11pm.when they arrived they found a man and a woman dead.both had suffered at least one gun shot wound.the case remains undbh we are asking for the public health trying to find the perfect one for me and i don't want to be like i don't want to get your houseer investigation.(oncam)reporting in san jose, lydia pantazes kron4 news. (vicki) these shootings mark the 4th and 5th homicides of the year in san jose. last year homicides significantly decreased. in 20-17 there were a total of 34... that's compared to 47

homicides in 20-16. at cal-berkeley .khristina miller- "i was diagnosed with schizophrenia -- paranoid schizophrenia." the couple is desperately searching for affordable housing... but it's been next to impossible to do in the bay area. khristina miller- "there's like a waitlist that's like either two to three years." paul miller- "we've considered leaving the state -- we've considered every option. i've been on craigslist looking at homes in stockton, in merced -- it's rough. there is no housing in america." khristina gets about one- thousand dollars a month from social security... and, paul typically gets paid cash as a handyman... making it challenging to meet the requirements to get approved for affordable housing. a steady income and the ability to consisently pay the rent. leslye corsiglia/casa- "in sillicon valley, where we're located, affordable housing is actually an oxymoron." leslye corsignlia (core-seal-ee-yuh) is the executive director of sillicon-valley-at-home... a non-rpofit organization working on solutions to the bay area housing crisis. she's also co-chair of casa -- the committee to house the bay area... tasked with finding ways to implement "plan bay area." a regional blueprint for building more housing near transportation. so, what is affordable housing?

one count of continous sexual assault.the sunyu learning center is an private after school program....which is located behind but is not associated with this church on south springer road. their website says they teach chinese language to kids ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, as well as math and other electives. (maureen)the operator of the school declined to be interviewed but a teacher who did not want to go on camera says lui had been with the school about two years. she told me she doesn't want to believe the accusations against lui....saying he was good with the students and that she trusts him.detectives are concerned that they are other victims out there because lui was also on the board of directors of the sanyu learning center, and a volunteer at several other communtiy organizations, including a church and had opportunity to be alone with
