5:43 pm
5:44 pm
in a time of extreme political polarization... california is a state where the democrats are in control ... in fact, in the bay area assembly delegation, there is only one republican .. (steve) that republican is catherine baker. and as our pam moore reports... baker insists she is bi- partisan to the core... even though some feel it is a dirty word.
5:45 pm
a rainy january day at the briones regional park archery range in the east bay .... 'we need folks using our outdoors and appreciate them because then more likely to protect and preserve them' i caught up with the bay areas only assembly republican .. married mother of twins.. catherine baker. a lover of the outdoors.. she says she fights for the environment. 'for me as a republican, it's a principle of personal responsibility.. you have an impact on the environment you should take care of it' - - baker does not miss an opportunity to mention her bi- partisan stance .. but her critics suggest, its really political expedience .. self-serving .. in a politically blue state they say, she would have to work across the aisle if she wants to get anything accomplished.. but she pushes back.. "as soon as you put blinders on and not really listen to good ideas because of who they come from.. you're not gonna be able to serve your district well."" this is an area that's
5:46 pm
very independent minded.. we have a lot more partisan balance than state and bay area'and she frequently partners in town halls and on legislation with democrats ... some, who also, do not always tow the party line .. like state sen. steve glazer and state ---- tim grayson.. whose districts overlap with hers.. -'bi-partisanship is hard.. 'i've had 16 bills land on the governors desk.. all bi-partisan.. all signed with no vetos "baker has also paid a price for some of her not so republican views. ' you'll find activists across the state (edit) who push back . "when i supported common sense gun control legislation, my address was put on a website and threats to me and my family for it." make no mistake she doesn't hesitate to criticize democrats .. she is against the proposed bay bridge toll hike .. supports immigration but is against sanctuary cities and states .. and against bart strikes .. my democratic colleagues have had the overwhelming majority for most of the last 25 years and california has the highest poverty rate.. crumbling
5:47 pm
roads.. housing costs are astronomical, businesses are leaving the state and our education system is not serving our kids well"- of course there are some issues which have nothing to do with party .. like supporting whistleblower legislation... pam q- so you have been inappropriately touched by colleguaes? umm in the capital setting it has happened. i've also had staff that i've learned, when something has happened to them, i've intervened on their behalf. 3614 most days baker says she drops her twins at school then drives to sacramento .. when she has to stays over, she sleeps at her parents home.. she says it helps her stay grounded ..and archery... - helps her stay focused.. "for me, archery is an opportunity to remember to stay focused""i like the one right in the middle of the line"
5:48 pm
(steve) that was our pam moore reporting. baker's district is largely made up of suburbs including livermore .. san ramon .. . and orinda. she wont speculate on the governor's race but says for president... she wrote in former secretary of state condolezza rice on the ballot. and on the national level she says she admires arizona senator jeff flake . baker is up for re-election this year. lawrence karnow: it was a cool breezy day around the bay area. low pressure continues to rotate through southern california. you can see the showers on doppler radar. it is widely scattered and there is even some snow over the mountains. we've seen a few clouds today but it has remained dry locally. dress warmly if you're going out tonight. its still chilly and breezy. in fact, it will be a bit windy again especially in the north bay tonight before winds decrease tomorrow morning. on the satellite image you can the low and the high pressure trying to build in behind it. that low will actually move back off the coast before moving back on shore later in the week. the pattern is starting to look more active now but there are no major storms on the horizon. it will be a cold night with lows dipping into the low 30s and 40s. highs tomorrow will be in the 50s to mid 60s with mostly sunny skies. a weak weather system will bring a few more clouds and cool temperatures on wednesday. sunny and warmer weather with breezy conditions are expected friday and into the weekend.
