in one bay area city seem to be causing a little confusion for drivers. kron 4's stanley roberts explains in this edition of people behaving badly. (who are you?) who are you? (who are you to be filming people here), it's a public street (yea so.) so i can publicly film, (really) yea enjoy it thank you you too while i'm recording in public ..here is some information that will save you the headache of getting a ticket for running a red light see this black and white sign which reads stop here on red . it's pretty much self explanatory but just in case its still confusing ill try to dumb it downnats: ambiance i'm just outside the moutain
4:41 am
view caltrain station on castro street and there are two sets of lights one set before the tracks and one set behind the tracks when the light turns red everyone must stop here at this limit line and wait for the light to turn green easier said than done. nats: ambiance because many drivers roll right past the first set of red lights and stop at the second set . the problem with that is when you do that you are running the red light nats: ambiancein other cases drivers stop at the limit line only to drive forward to the second set again that is considered running the red light whether in a car or on a bicycle nats: ambiance all day every day you will see drivers run the red risking 400 dollar ticket and point you your driving record the reason for this is simple, it's to prevent people from stopping on the caltrain tracks and potentially getting hit by a train nats: ambiance and even with a green light drivers need to keep clear of the tracks all to often i watch drivers get stuck on the tracks or have to back up when
4:42 am
if they stayed behind the stop here on red sign they would put themselves in a sticky situation. if driver would pull there head out there phones and pay attention to the road many of the mistakes could be avoided nats: ambiance so basically keep back until its your turn you can save money by not getting a ticket or have a life by not getting hit by a train .. in mountain view stanley roberts kron 4 news (robin) coming up on the kron four morning news... we all know housing costs is an on-going battle in the bay area. but next... we take an in-depth look at how an unlikely group is handling finding... an affordable house. finding it difficult to find an affordable place to live. this morning... kron four's philippe djegal is sharing the story of a retired woman whose life was turned upside down... after she lost her home and was forced to find another. nats- " for theresa bruner (brew-ner)...nats- " her independence means everything.
4:50 am
so when it was stripped away -- and the 74-year-old ended up on the streets... she struggled.theresa bruner/senior- "i hated every minute of it. i was so depressed and it was just not me." after living in a home in east san jose for 19 years... her landlord died in 20-16.theresa bruner/senior- "and, her heir's took over and wanted to cash it in -- sell it." and, that's exactly what they did. theresa's rent had been 800-dollars a month... theresa bruner/senior- "that house that i was living in should have been condemned, but i didn't complain because i didn't know where else to go." and, for the first time in two decades -- she was forced to look for a new place to live... unaware of how difficult it would be to find something within her budget. theresa bruner/senior- "it's like having to stay in the car after the money ran out for the motels, you know, for about 10 months." three- months into being homeless... another person on the streets tipped her off to e-a- h housing... and, that the affordable housing developer and property management company was accepting applications at a senior housing facility in santa clara. theresa applied, was eventually accepted...
4:51 am
and, ten months after losing her home -- she was back in one.theresa bruner/senior- "it's the difference between life and death. it's, it's just great." her budget is about two-thousand dollars a month... money she receives from social security and a pension. theresa's new community is made up of people 55-years-of-age and older... she's lucky to have landed a one-bedroom apartment... because like at so many other senior living facilities... the waiting list to apply is closed. at this facility... rents are based on the area median income... which for a single-person in santa clara county is 79,300-dollars. tenants must make 30 to 50 percent of the area median income to be eligible for an apartment.theresa bruner/senior- "i do pay half of what i make, but it's -- i love it. i just, it gives you independence, and um, the zest for life all over again." kristen clements is a division manager for the san jose housing department... theresa's former city. clements says san jose is
4:52 am
working on ways to create more senior housing... the hope is to keep more seniors in the city rather than move like theresa had to. the santa clara county department of aging and adult services says... 17-percent of it's population is 60-years-of-age or older... and, on average, the cost of living here for a single older adult is 18-percent higher than the state average the department of aging and adult services also says, on average, seniors use more than half of their montlhy income on rent.kristen clements/san jose housing- "we know our population is aging and they need to be located in places that are close to transit close to walking to go to the drug store -- the grocery store." all amenities theresa has access to now -- in her new home. one she doesn't plan on moving away from any time soon.theresa bruner/senior- "there's hope for everybody -- they just have to look for it." she did, and it's worked out... proving you can be down, but not out -- even when you've lost it all. philippe djegal, kron four news.
