least 16 others.good evening, i'm grant lodes.(vicki)i'm vicki liviakis. the suspected shooter was taken into custody at the high school in parkland ... that's in broward county northwest of miami, just yesterday parkland was ranked as florida's safest city.today it is the scene of shock and mourning.(grant) catherine heenan is in the newsroom to take us through the day. catherine? (catherine) it happened just at the end of the school day. somebody, possibly the shooter, pulled the fire alarm. and then the gunfire began... "...as the fire alarm got pulled, and kids were evacuating, i heard 5 pops. and i said that's not a drill." oh my god ... bang bang i was shaking, i was panickingbang bangdispatch natreports of an active shooter at the school brought a massive police response.officers converged on the scene as students took cover in classrooms.parents began receiving frantic texts "i hear gunshots. we just got a code red notification so get me asap. there are gunshots in our school. hell, someone died. come now.""honestly i'm still in shock. i don't know whether it'll hit me tonight or tomorrow'"some kids froze. some kids were on their

today san (grant) today san francisco unified school officials confirmed that the 10 students who got sick at james lick middle school yesterday consumed a cannabis candy product before becoming ill. kron4's maureen kelly spoke to city's public health director who says this incident is a wake up call for parents. we're very fortunate we've only had two incidents where we've had consumption by children of cannabisthe most recent was yesterday's incident where 10 middle schools were transported to the hospital after eating what's suspected to be cannbis ediable candy. 7 had what was described as minor symtoms, two serious, and one was said to be critical but the dosage was not life threatening.the other incident was back in 2016 when 19 people, a majority of whom were underage got sick after
5:07 pm
eating marijuana gummy candy at a quinceanera celebration. the city's public heath director says this most recent incident is a wake up call to parents about why kids need to be kept away from what is now legal recreationally for adults but is still illegal for those to consume for those under 21 years of age.the marijuana that you remember when you were younger had about 2% thc now it's up to about 12%. i know we have these high potency products that nobody even knows the long term affects of these high potency products. it affects the brain and the last thing you want your children experimenting with is things that are going to impact their brain and their learning. because that's the time in life when they need to be focusing on school and their intellectual developmentbut legalization has come with steps to make it harder for childrent to get their hands on the drug.take a look at this child proof packaging that all marijuana products purchased at dispensaries come in. i even had a hard time figuring it out. when we covered the incident at the quinceria two years ago, we

showed you how similar candy gummy worms bought at a corner store were to cannabis infused gummy worms. but today, i went to a few different dispensaries and there were no gummy bears or gummy worms to be found.they still make gummy products, but the shapes they come now are more similar to a cough lozenge...rather than little kid's candy. a byproduct of the marijuna industry becoming more regulated. maureen kelly kron4 news (vicki) berkeley city council members pass a resolution... declaring the city a sanctuary for recreational marijuana. the measure was proposed by the mayor of berkeley and is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. under the new resolution, no berkeley department, agency, commission, officer or employee shall use any city funds or resources to assist in the enforcement of federal drug laws related to cannabis. one local resident says he's on board with the move. kevin vickery/berkeley resident: "i think california and berkeley have always been on the forefront of advances and trends in our culture. i'm

seeing a lot of culture. i'm seeing a lot of people in their seventies and eighties who don't have access to this otherwise. so i think it's a smart move and i think it's a bold move."(vicki) the city will also oppose attempts by the us drug enforcement administration to close cannabis businesses. this comes after california voters approved the use of recreational marijuana for adults 21 and older in 20-16. senior housing... the hope is to keep more seniors in the city rather than move like theresa had to. the santa clara county department of aging and adult services says... 17-percent of it's population is 60-years-of-age or older... and, on average, the cost of living here for a single older adult is 18-percent higher than the state average the department of aging and adult services also says, on average, seniors use more than half of their montlhy income on rent.kristen clements/san jose housing- "we know our population is aging and they need to be located in places that are close to transit close to walking to go to the drug store -- the grocery store." all amenities theresa has access to now -- in her new home. one she doesn't plan on moving away from any time soon.theresa bruner/senior- "there's hope for everybody -- they just have to look for it." she did, and it's worked out... proving you can be down, but not out -- even when you've lost it all. philippe djegal, kron four news.
