it's not the way everyone likes to wake up. a series of small quakes shook lots of people living in the east bay early this morning. good evening i'm grant lodes.(vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis....the people most affected...folks living in and around danville.(vicki)the four jolts came between 1-30 and 4-30 this morning.kron4's maureen kelly talked to a seismologist from u-s-g-s who says there's been quite a bit of activity in this area over the past several days. here at the u-s geologicial survey in menlo park....they are calling all of this seismic activity in and around mount diablo a quake swarm. here's a map of this morning's quakes.starting with a 2-point-8 quake just after 130 am.followed by three others three hours later....measuring 2-point-6, 3-point-0 and 2 point 9, all within seconds. but that's not all.....the usgs website shows that there's been more than 2 dozen small quakes in this same area since friday. this activity happening close to the calaveras fault that runs thru the san ramon valley.
5:01 pm
seismologist brian kilgore says that doesn't mean residents there should panic.i don't think there's too much cause for alarm since he small swarms are known to of happened in this part of the bay area. here's a map that shows how these quake swarms have hit in that same region many times over the years. there was a large cluster nearly 50 years ago in 1970.....most recently around 2015 when roughly 600 quakes hit over the course of several weeks.....but none have been very big.so far, the largest were a pair of quakes measuring 4-point-4 during a swarm near alamo in 1990. however these are great reminders these are small earthquakes there's no damage that i'm aware of no injuries that we live in earthquake country it's always a good idea to be prepared the large earthquakes that will come seismologists believe that there is a more than 70 percent probability of a 6-point-7 quake or greater striking the bay area in the next 30 years. the hayward fault which runs thru the east bay is the most likely candidate for that kind of activity since big earthquakes have hit there roughly every

what to have in an earthquake kit... that way you are ready if the big one hits. it is all on our website at kron 4 dot com. (vicki) the digital age has opened the door to a whole new world of classroom cheating. from sharing test questions on social media...to using sophisticated watches during tests...the options to get the right answer... are endless. (grant) a new investigation a new investigation not only looked at how students use technology to cheat.... it showed us that teachers are actually changing the way they teach in the classroom. ryan hughes reports. students once passed notes or looked over their shoulder to cheat. these days-- it's as easy as just a few taps on a cell phone screen-- to tap in to the right answers. "having technology so easily accessible makes it really easy to cheat. and i've seen it like all throughout my life almost - with technology so prevalent." phones. computers. tablets. watches. getting it right-- is getting easier
5:36 pm
and easier. there's even a website called quizlet-- where students can plug in a question-- and quickly get an answer. "there's opportunities. and students are now able to use those tools." while that opportunity exists-- university of tampa professor patricia o'grady believes it can be wiped out. "i think in the digital age - you can take precautions. if students don't have access - obviously - to cell phones and watches during testing time - um - that would eliminate it." the manatee county school district makes that abundantly clear in its student code of conduct. students are allowed to bring personal phones or computers to class-- but they must be turned off-- and kept out of sight. superintendent doctor diana greene. "i don't see cheating any different than when technology wasn't pervasive in our schools.""i just think now they have other ways of providing themselves answers or possible answers to questions. " teachers are wise to this new kind of cheating-- so: a teacher is going to see you on your phone or a laptop - it's easier to hide a piece of paper if you wanted to. "even though technology is available - our teachers are very astute." but outside the classroom doors-- there's another world of ways to cheat-- thanks to the world wide web-- a place where test and even exam questions and answers can be shared. "it's
5:37 pm
becoming more of a challenge for school districts. where now parents are wanting us to monitor social media - punish or give students consequences for things that happen on social media." challenges abound-- and when it comes to students and social media-- there's no end in sight. "like any good tool in education - they have to be taught how to use it. and they have to understand why it cannot and should not be abused." (grant) that was ryan hughes reporting. students and administrators say there are several factors causing people to cheat... including stress, and the
