(vicki) breaking news:a treetrimmer has died after being electrocuted. san jose fire officials say the man cut a branch that then hit a powerline.this happened on page mill drive sometime this afternoon. a resident noticed the man in the tree... thought he was stuck and called for help. nearby homes are evacuated.. as emergency crews try and recover the body. (grant) new video tonight showing the moment an engine catches fire during a southwest airlines flight. you can see the plane in the air... and bright flashes showing the plan on fire. it happened on the flight from salt lake city to los angeles today. a woman was walking to work when she noticed the flames shooting out of the airplane overhead. some people describe

hearing explosions. one mother was on her way to disneyland with her family when the plane made the emergency landing. we just held hands and said a little prayer and we are really lucky...lots of praying, lots of holding hands...(grant) the fire was out by the time the plane landed back at the salt lake city airport. there were 110 passengers on board... and they were able to get on another flight to l-a-x. southwest released a statement apologizing to customers for the inconvenience... saying maintaining safety is their top priority. it's not clear what caused the engine to catch fire. (grant) and you might remember these unsettling pictures from a united airlines flight from earlier this month... the engine cover came off during a flight from s-f-o to honolulu on february 13th. the cover came off while the plane was over the pacific ocean -- that caused the engine to vibrate. the flight was able to make it to hawaii --

with aircraft rescue and firefighters standing by as a precaution. during the flight... passengers were told to brace for impact. the boeing triple seven has two engines and can fly with only one for several hours. the f-a-a is still looking into what went wrong. (vicki) more than a dozen people gathered outside the ice building in san francisco today for a prayer vigil in support of a south bay father. fernando carrillo is facing deportation and has been behind bars for nearly five months. he was arrested in october -- after he dropped his daughter off at day care. carrillo's entire family -- including parents and siblings are documented and live in the san jose area. his wife spoke to kron4 before the court hearing. lourdes barraza/ice detainee's wife: "our family and our closest friends, this community that we've been able to get close to because of this nightmare, has just been amazing to us. if it wasn't

(vicki) carrillo had been working as a direct tv installer for the last four years. he will remain in an immigration detention center after today's court hearing. the judge will decide if carrillo will be deported back to mexico in the next 3 weeks. (grant) happening now... police in san mateo county are looking for two suspects who they say are armed and dangerous... after a triple shooting. two people were killed and another injured in the shooting near daly city last night. police received a call of shots fired near villa street and hillside boulevard. one man died at the scene. one woman died of injuries while on the way to the hospital. a third victim was transported to the hospital and their condition is unknown at this time. (grant) fremont police made an arrest in an armed robbery and sexual assault that happened on saturday morning. today... police identified the suspect as 33- year-old terrell gomer. the incident happened at a party city store on fremont boulevard. police say the suspect entered the store and

held two female employees at gunpoint... and sexually assaulted them. police located gomer yesterday and arrested him. report is criticizing sonoma county's efforts to warn residents as the north bay firestorm spread.kron four's terisa estacio has more on the report - and reaction from a county official. saying the fires had a catastrophic effect on sonoma county, the report revealed what the state assessment team claimed were mis-steps in how the county and its emergency officials faced the most destructive wildfire in california's history. the speciality team who was tasked with evaluating the response stated in the report that alerts and warning capabilities quote "were uncoordinated and included gaps, overlaps, and redundancies with regard to the capabilities in various departments. in addition, "the county lacked reliable, timely and coordinated situational awareness as to the scale, size and scope of the fires growth, character and movement." the team stated procedures and policies identified and utilized were more relevant to dealing with a storm or flooding and those

policies quote, 'were misunderstood or not directly applicable to this fast moving, complex fire situation." james gore, sonoma county supervisor. we could have done better. kron four met with sonoma county supervisor james gore monday concerning the report. gore. in total one hundred thousand people were evacuated during the days of the wildfires push through the county - 42 people lost their lives, 8900 homes destroyed. gore says it is impossible to say if a better system could have lessened the damage or saved lives, but he is determined to improve on the current system. the actual cause of the fire is still under investigation by california fire. in santa rosa, te

the supreme court said today that it's staying out of the dispute over daca -- or the deferred action for childhood arrivals program...at least for now. catherine heenan is here with more on its decision...and why the white house is disappointed.. (catherine) the white house was hoping to move things along by getting the supreme courtto quickly review a lower court decision..... one that blocked the government's effort to end the program. but the court isn't going to deal with daca now at all...although that doesn'trule out action on the issue later. the decision means that the obama- era program will now continue along the normalappeals process --- through the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco. and for now - renewals can continue... the white house had planned to end the program march 5th... analysts say the fact the supreme court didn't respond

(grant) today... the supreme court also heard arguments in a case that could impact millions of workers across the country. (vicki) the question is: should states be allowed to force government employees to pay union dues, even if they don't belong to a union? our washington correspondent jessica smith has the details. nats mark janus: give us our first amendment rights.mark janus is not a union member, but as a state employee - illinois law requires him to pay a fee to the government union, afscme. janus argues that forces him to have a political affiliation. mark janus: let the individual worker choose what they'd like to do. but afscme says janus benefits from the union's bargaining - even if he's not a memberand unions are already prohibited from using non-member money for political reasons.the union attorney says this case is really about taking money from unions. david frederick (afsmce attorney): to give government free reign to act in an authoritarian way in respect to the workplace. to set wages, terms and conditions without input from workers. the union says if workers aren't forced to pay fees, many people -- even union

(grant) in the north bay... a young boy is rescued after falling down a ravine. it happened yesterday in mount tamalpais state park. officials say the 4-year-old boy fell 30 feet into a creek along the steep ravine trail. the marin fire department helped get the boy to safety. he was taken to children's hospital oakland where he is recovering tonight. .. (grant) police in petaluma are looking for people accused of stealing lottery tickets from a convenience store. it happened friday night at the discount cigarettes store . a man entered the store... and grabbed two large racks of california lottery scratchers from the counter. the man then ran out of the store and got in a getaway car

police think the two people are in the santa rosa area... cashing in on winning lottery tickets. (vicki) in the east bay... police arrest three kids for prowling and theft. it happened at an apartment complex on christie avenue in emeryville. someone told police that three teens were trying to get into apartments. when police arrived they found that the kids had also stolen packages from some of the apartments. (vicki) four people are behind bars tonight... after police say they are accused of two home invasion robberies... and leading officers on a chase. it happened in richmond on saturday night. the first home invasion happened in the carriage hill neighborhood. when officers were responding to that crime... another home invasion was reported nearby. the suspects tried to get away... but then crashed into a light pole off of interstate- 80 in pinole. police say the car the suspects were driving had been stolen three weeks ago in a carjacking. three of the suspects arrested are juveniles. (grant) in the south bay... fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire at a strip mall

in san jose. it happened early this morning at the alvin center on alvin avenue the fire caused damage to the attic in one of the businesses. no one was inside the building...and nobody was hurt. (grant) students at a san jose high school are celebrating after one of their peers earned a perfect score on his advanced placement test. tommy tran goes to evergreen valley high school. he is now one of just six students in the world to earn a perfect score on the a-p calculus exam. the advanced placement exams are college level tests. (vicki) on the peninsula... police in menlo park are looking for a man they consider armed and dangerous. he's is identified as jose gutierrez. police say they were called to his home over the weekend because he was firing a gun in his backyard. witnesses say they believe his neighbor's loud party upset him. police believe gutierrez was firing an assault style weapon. the swat team set up a perimeter around his house... but were unable to locate gutierrez.

(catherine) there's been nearly two months of clean-up work since those deadly mudslides tore through dozens of homes in montecito -- and killed 21 people. since then, there hasn't been a lot of rain to worry about -- and that's given crewstime to clear debris and clean out river beds. but now - with an unpredictable storm approaching.....people are getting readyfor more potential trouble. one big change -- the county has created a 72-hour evacuation timeline and a map that shows some of the areas at highest risk for flooding

(vicki) the former deputy who did not confront the gunman during the school shooting in parkland, florida is giving his side of the story.(grant) deputy scot peterson stayed outside the building while the rampage was under way. but as cnn's martin savidge reports, peterson's attorney says the

tonight. silicon valley is getting so expensive that even facebook and apple employees can't afford to live near the office that's according to a new report from the website "open listings". it reveals that workers at five major tech companies, including apple, facebook, and google... would have to spend over 28-percent of their salary to pay a monthly mortgage on a home near work. software engineers at apple have it worst. they would have to pay an average of $52-hundred a month to afford the median-priced home in cupertino. the report also says that in san francisco, some desperate renters pay 50% of their income on rent. say their ride sharing services reduce traffic congestion. but a new study says they're doing just the opposite. the study in boston found people are abandoning mass transit ... paying ten or even 20 times as much for the comfortg and convenience of a private ride. a california state senator is proposing a bill ..which is being welcomed by animal lovers... catherine heenan is here with more on the legislation that would make "mouth to snout" resuscitation legal....
