hills says pg&e spokesperson tamar sarkissiansotsot betsy franklin has live in this up here for 35-years. she says a downed tree during a storm is an all too familiar sight for residents in the this areasotfortunately no one was injured when the tree came down. the power lines actually broke the tree fall, preventing it from damaging neighboring properties or vehicles. the tree came down in the morning. pg&e crews spent the day working on clearing the debris and repairing the power lines sot twelve pg&e customers lost power when the tree came down. officials with the utility say the repair work will done later tonight and power restored...in the oakland madyun kron4news ( robin )drivers in the south bay experienced several issues

on the road thursday.several accidents like this three-car fender bender near the redwood estates... spread across highway 17. as a result, traffic was gridlocked throughout the day. and in downtown san jose... there were two kinds of people on the streets. those who remembered their umbrellas and kept dry... and those who did not...and were drenched. ( robin )in the north bay... officials are closely watching the burn areas... left from last fall's firestorm. officials say leftover debris from those storms could make its way into storm drains... and cause flooding. in santa barbara... following their fires... horrific errosion lead to landslides... which trapped and killed residents. assistant fire marshal... paul lowenthal of santa rosa... say's it's vital for people to respond to any alerts... and take necessary precautions. paul lowenthal- asst fire marshallwe know the potential of ash, residue alot of sentimetn any leftover debris all run off into system and that could lead to flooding

shalini palanivelu/fire witness it was very terrible. i never saw the type of fire in my lifetime. it made me very scared so i took all the valuable things in my house and came out very fast.the first call to 911 was made at 2:15 in the afternoon - with several paniced calls following.don linneman/battalio n chief, fremont fire departmentwhen the first engine arrived, the fire was heavily involved in the upstairs units. it had already burned through the roof so it was in the attic. the fire ended up actually going to a third alarm due to a potential for spread and the number of resources needed on scene.fire officials say about 16 apartments were signifcantly impacted.don linneman/battalio n chief, fremont fire departmentwe currently have four upstairs units that are completely destroyed by fire, the four units below it have significant water damage and are inhabitable and we also have about 8 other units that aren't going to be inhabitable for a few days do to water damge and smoke damage. residents tried to save what they couldthe firefighters helped me to take out my

passport everything is inside. i just checked my laptop i was able to locate where it is singham who is one of those displaced.. is hoping his laptop is slavageable. contractors on site tell me the fire left about 2-million dollars in damage and could take up to a year to rebuild. ( robin ) the alameda county district attorney district attorney has cleared two east bay police officers ... in the shooting death of a pregnant 16 year old girl. in march of last year... fremont police officers shot and killed 16 year old elena mondragon. according to a new report from the d-a's office... elena was a passenger in a car when the

driver tried to ram officers conducting an undercover sting. that's when the officers opened fire... but they missed the driver and hit elena instead. her family still wants the officer held accountable. "people make mistakes but this was a deadly costly mistake and even with that being said people should be held accountable for that."( robin ) the d-a's office found that the officers acted in self defense. elena's family says they are considering legal action against the department. later this month they plan to hold a vigil in hayward to mark the one year anniversary of her death. ( robin ) a southern california couple is in jail this morning... on child cruelty charges. the san bernardino county sheriff's department says the couple lived in a filthy desert shack with their three kids and dozens of cats. the couple -- daniel panico and mona kirk -- didn't have electricity or running water on their property. deputies were doing a check of the joshua

tree area... when they noticed a ramshackle shelter. the couple and three childrens -- ages 11 through 14 -- were living in the confined space. investigators say the shelter was only about 4 feet high and 10 feet wide. ( robin ) a nursing assistant is arrested... accused of the sexual battery of a patient. cody baca turned himself in to walnut creek police... after a warrant was issued for his arrest. the investigation began back in october... after a patient came forward. baca worked as an nursing assistant at john medical center in walnut creek. ( robin )an unsettling few days for students here in the bay area. just this week... there have been at least four incidents of violent threats against students and schools. some arrests have been made ... and some investigations are ongoing. kron 4's gabe slate reports. santa rosa police released this graphic picture today depicting a young woman with an assault rifle claiming to be a school shooter with the

warning to avoid a santa rosa high school.this picture was floating around social media police are looking into it police believe it may be related to the violent threat found on a bathroom wall at a santa rosa high school that lead to over 1,000 kids being sent home early and the arrest of a 16 year old student believed to write the message. that was just one of four incidents this week in the bay area where violent threats were made against a school and it's students.these words "everyone is dead" were discovered on a bathroom wall at alameda high school it prompted hundreds of students to stay home on tuesday. law enforcement is investigating. and in san jose a threat surfaced on twitter that some alum rock schools would be "shot up". at the same time on an unnamed social network someone threatened violence against oak grove schools in san jose. both incidents lead school officials to warn parents. police are investigating.and this threat was discovered in san jose written on a women's bathroom stall saying there would be a shooting wednesday at 5pm on the campus of san jose state university. the school sent out phone alerts rattling nerves among the students. sound from studentnow i met up

is behind bars for making lewd comments toward school children. this happened at willow glen middle school in san jose. a number of students told police they were followed and contacted by a man in a red pick-up truck. police have arrested ashour tarverdi. tarverdi is a registered sex offender -- with a previous convition for annoying a child. arrested more than 230 people in northern california. the ice raids started sunday --and they wrapped up wednesday. in that time.. 232 people were arrested. ice says out of those arrests... 180 people were either convicted criminals or had previosuly violated a deportation order. ( robin ) the justice department is launching an investigation into oakland mayor libby schaaf... after she warned people that the ice raids were coming. the d-o-j says that warning... caused 800 people to avoid arrest. the d-o-j is looking into whether schaaf's warning

constitutes obstruction of justice. mayor schaaf defended her decision -- calling it her "duty and moral obligation." but she admitted she is getting some angry reaction -- including death threats. ( robin )on thursday interim mayor...mark farrell... announced additional city legal defense funding for detained immigrrants in northern california. kron four's philippe djegal explains how much money will go into this program... and how many people the funds will help. (philippe) just this week... interim san francisco mayor mark farrell says immigration and customs enforcement detained at least 150 undocumented immigrants in th e bay area. he says soon those detained.. and the hundreds of others facing deportation will be better positioned to receive legal representation.mark farrell/interim mayor- "at the state level, with are partnering with assemblyman phil ting, um, to ask for $7 million in funding every single year, um, that will be enough to provide representation to every single immigrant, uh, in our immigrant courts here in

northern california." and, here locally in san francisco... the city intends to spend an additional three-point-five million dollars on legal defense services for immigrants. bringing the total to more than 11 million dollars a year. sandra fewer/supervisor- "our legislation to provide this funding made it out of budget committee this morning unanimously, and i look forward to celebrating a unanimous vote on this issue at the full board." for the next two years... two-point-five million dollars of the additional funds will go to san francisco non-profit organizations already helping detained immigrants. another one million will go to the public defender's office. jeff adachi/public defender- "last year, we started an immigration unit in the public defender's office. we're gonna double the number of attorney's, uh, as a result of funding from the mayor and the board of supervisors." public defender jeff adachi says his office will have the ability to double the number of people it represents... from 100 to about 200. in san francisco, philippe

( robin )in national news... as the gun control debate continues in tallahassee and washington -- some south florida mayors are asking, can they do something on their own? mayor skip campbell of coral springs is pushing loudly for change.... he spoke up at a recent commissioners meeting... saddened that legislature won't move forward to ban assault weapons. mayor campbell is now leading an effort with other state mayors to get an amendment to the states constitution to ban assault weapons. (áásot fulláá)"the city of coral springs is not doing anything individual this is being done by a number of mayors as individual citizens of the state of florida and the united states of america...our kids need to be protected."( robin ) mayor campbell is challenging a 20-11 law that fines elected officials and even removes members from office if they

try to create their own gun policies. but he says he wants to leave the decision in the hands of voters... and while its too late to get it on this years ballot, he's going to try for 20-20. ( robin )senator marco rubio has announced his own plan for gun safety in the wake of the parkland, florida school shooting.on the senate floor thursday... the florida republican highlighted his ideas to prevent more mass shootings. rubio said he is looking into efforts to strengthen school security... provide school training to identify threats... and create school threat assessment intervention teams. the teams would coordinate between law enforcement and other state agencies to flag students who could be (robin)coming up next on the kron 4 morning news ... a warning from doctors. the say more kids are going to the hospital... because they are accidentally eating pot. what doctors are suggesting you do incase this happens to your kid... next. accidentally eating marijuana. that's according to doctors in northern california who say they are seeing an increase in kids going to the emergency room because of it. angela musallam has that story. dr. daniel colby:"we've seen these exposures for years, but now they've really jumped up, and because of that, all of us are on guard and we have all raised our suspicions." doctor daniel colby is a medical toxicologist at u-c davis .. who's treated dozens of children in the e-r.. for accidentally eating marijuana. colby says often times diagnosing the patients can be confusing.dr. daniel colby: "they might just be very sleepy, but they can be confused, they can be upset, they can be vomiting, often times they have a wobbly gait, sometimes they can be sick to the point where end up trying

to help them breathe." although some young patients can experience severe symptoms .. colby says ingesting pot isn't deadly. dr. daniel colby: "sometimes we do fluids, we do supportive care where we monitor, make sure people are safe, and some people need a few hours of observation."last november .. the california poison center saw 30 cases .. where children had ingested marijuana.the trend continued through january .. bringing the number of ill patients to almost one-hundred.shayna shonauer:"we train everyone to make sure that everything is leaving in a child proof bag so even products like this are going to go repackaged into a child safe bag as well." shayna shonauer works at a marijuana dispensary in sacramento .. and says by law .. every cannabis product must be child-proofed.ultimately .. she says it's a parent's responsibility to make sure the products are locked away. nat sound:now .. colby and his colleagues are asking families the big question .. as they begin to see more of these cases.a concern .. so great .. the e-r is bringing back a

( robin )uber is getting ready to roll out a new service. the company says it can now help get you to your doctors' appointments... on the providers' dime. every year, millions of americans miss medical appointments because they don't have transportation. the missed appointments cost the medical system more than 150- billion-dollars a year. uber health is partnering with health care providers to schedule rides for patients. so far, more than 100 health care organizations are on board -- including hospitals, rehab centers, senior care facilities and physical therapy centers. ( robin )san mateo police are asking for help regarding a murder that happened at gray whale cove on february 13th. a man's body was found in the parking lot that night...he had been shot and died at the scene. anyone who was traveling on the night of the homicide around 9-30 and 11-30 near highway one, between montara and pacifica, is being asked to call police. ( robin )a massachusetts man has been arrested for sending letters containing a suspicious substance... to well-known individuals around the country.24 year-old daniel frisiello is accused of mailing five threatening letters containing white powder... and a note claiming the powder was dangerous. stanford law professor michele dauber was among those who received a letter... as well as donald trump junior. dauber has made headlines with the recall judge aaron persky campaign, an effort to remove the judge in the brock turner ( robin )a man convicted of

killing a family of five .... was sentenced to five life terms without the possibility of parole. a jury convicted binh luc (bin luke) of stabbing, beating and strangling to death five family members back in 20-12. it was one of the worst mass killings in san francisco's history.investigators allege luc killed the family... while robbing them after losing money at a ( robin ) city of san francisco is dealing with more car break-ins. this was the scene on van ness near bay street yesterday. this is video you will see only on kron 4. you can see three cars in a row with smashed windows. san francisco had more than 3-thousand car break ins last year... that's nearly triple what was reported in 20- 10. city officials are calling it an epidemic. ( robin )prove you paid! bart is now employing fare inspectors to make sure riders are paying their fair share. kron4's maureen kelly has that story.

today will be the last day that warnings are issued bart deputy police chief stood before his six fare inspectors as he showed off the new handheld gadgets that those community service officers will be used to tell if tickets and clipper cards were used to enter the system. bingor not.boop.the team then went out put those devices to work.as they team checked for fare evaders. which is problem that costs bart an estimated $15 to 25 million dollars a year.today one man declined to hand over his ticket and took off..he got away, which is fine since the team is still issuing warnings today but.going forward those without proof they paid their fair share will be slapped with a citationsit's a civil administrative citation citation when he will be going to court it's jail that's not gonna happen either civil citations much like a parking ticketas to the effectiveness of six inspectors and one supervisor against such a big

( darya ) our top story this morning... there will be more police at schools in san jose as officers try to assure the community that they are safe.( james ) this comes after threats were made against teachers and students. kron 4's lydia pantazes is live in san jose this morning with the latest. ( lydia )this is linda vista elementary school, one of the schools threatened that is part of the alum rock school district here in east san jose. district officials say a social media post on twitter threatened that someone will "shoot up" east san jose elementary schools.that threat was made wednesday morning.the alum rock school district said in the last 24 hours. although the district cannot confirm

the credibility of the threat, they say they are treating it as serious and have contacted the san jose police department. the school superintendent called the threat offensive because the person responsible commented how they hated the school district and were happy they were from "a more affluent area," followed by a series of expletives. there were no specific schools narrowed out in the tweet, which simply stated that the person wanted to "shoot up" all of them. an automated call went out to the district's parents wednesday night.although that tweet came from in anonymous account, an investigation is underway to find out who made the threat. reporting live in san jose, lydia pantazes kron 4 news. ( james ) the north bay is also seeing threats against their schools. the latest threat happened yesterday. santa rosa police released a graphic picture -- showing a teen girl with an assault rifle. she claims to be a school shooter and warns students to stay away from santa rosa high school. but police say they have investigated the snapchat post... and they say parents

and students have nothing to worry about. police believe this case may be related to the threat found on a bathroom wall... at analy high school... that led to the arrest of a 16-year-old student in sebastopol. details about what led up to a police shooting in fairfield. police say the man was reaching for a gun when he was shot by the officer. that man is still in critical condition this morning... he has been identified as christian reyes. the shooting happened wednesday afternoon near pennsylvania avenue. investigators say the officer was trying to stop reyes... who was walking on crowly lane. the officer was not injured. ( darya ) a c-h-p officer is recovering after being injured in a crash. it happened on san felipe road near the santa clara county and san benito county border. the officer was pulling a car over for speeding when another car hit the patrol car causing it to flip over. the officer was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. ( james ) u-c berkeley has resolved a four-year federal probe that found it mishandled sexual misconduct cases. the investigation started back in 2014... after 31 students filed federal complaints. they said the school violated

couple is in jail this morning... on child cruelty charges. the san bernardino county sheriff's department says the couple lived in a filthy desert shack with their three kids and dozens of cats. the couple -- daniel panico and mona kirk -- didn't have electricity or running water on their property. deputies were doing a check of the joshua tree area... when they noticed a ramshackle shelter. the couple and three childrens -- ages 11 through 14 -- were living in the confined space.

( darya ) we have new details about what led up to a police shooting in fairfield. police say the man was reaching for a gun when he was shot by the officer. that man is still in critical condition this morning... he has been identified as christian reyes. the shooting happened wednesday afternoon near pennsylvania avenue. investigators say the officer was trying to stop reyes... who was walking on crowly lane. the officer was not injured. ( darya ) a c-h-p officer is recovering after being injured in a crash. it happened on san felipe road near the santa clara county and san benito county border. the officer was pulling a car over for speeding when another car hit the patrol car causing it to flip over. the officer was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. ( james ) u-c berkeley has resolved a four-year federal probe that found it mishandled

sexual misconduct cases. the investigation started back in 2014... after 31 students filed federal complaints. they said the school violated laws against sex discrimination... and that claims of harassment or assault were ignored. the investigation found that that the school had failed to properly provide formal investigations... or timely resolutions... in some cases. the university agreed to take another look at eight cases. the feds also will monitor the campus for two years. ( james ) a nursing assistant is arrested... accused of the sexual battery of a patient. cody baca turned himself in to walnut creek police... after a warrant was issued for his arrest. the investigation began back in october... after a patient came forward. baca worked as an nursing assistant at john muir medical center in walnut creek. break-ins. this was the sceneon van ness near bay street yesterday. you can see three cars in a row with smashed windows. san francisco had more than 3- thousand car break ins last year... that's nearly triple what was reported in 20-10. city officials are calling it an epidemic. ( james ) and the city of san francisco has released new numbers showing that some crimes in the city are going down. the new numbers show that homicides in the city and murders committed with guns both dropped in 2017. but the number of rapes in the city increased by 7%. property crimes also increased in 2017... by 15%. but police say early numbers for this year show that the number of car burglaries is on the decline. ( darya ) today hundreds of people are expected to attend a private funeral service for the reverand billy graham. the evangelist died last wednesday at the age of 99. thousands of people payed their respects

couple is in jail this morning... on child cruelty charges. the san bernardino county sheriff's department says the couple lived in a filthy desert shack with their three kids and dozens of cats. the couple -- daniel panico and mona kirk -- didn't have electricity or running water on their property. deputies were doing a check of the joshua tree area... when they noticed a ramshackle shelter. the couple and three childrens -- ages 11 through 14 -- were living in the confined space. investigators say the shelter was only about 4 feet high and 10 feet wide.
