smith walked right past a crowd of media without saying a word out when he left the san francisco main jail at around 2:30 this afternoon..... smith was silent and stonefaced after being released on 30 thousand dollars bail, walking out alone. do you have anything to say? your fans are worried about you.ignoring the media he ducked into a waiting suv and was driven away.shortly after he pulled away this mug shot was released.smith turned himself into police eariler today after an arrest warrant was issued for the former oakland raider and former 49er yesterday jail records show he was booked on four charges related to this weekend's incident.....domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism. all misdeameanors. this stems from an incident this past saturday night where the linebacker allegedly assaulted his ex girlfriend in a residence on the 600 block of bush street. police responed to the scene after the victim called 9-11."the

victim is calling us saying the suspect threw her around the room and bit her wrist. he climbed out of the window and may have gotten into a black range rover."smith allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. the victims injuries are considered non life threatening. the next day smith made a cryptic facebook post saying you are all wrong. this isn't the first time smith has been in trouble with the law. back in 2015 he was released from the 49ers after being arrested for a dui hit and run in santa clara. he was then picked up by the oakland raiders but suspended by the team in november of that same year for violating the nfl's substance abuse policies. he has not played since. and after this most recent incident, the raiders announced monday smith has been cut from the team. (vicki) also happening now. a southern california couple is out of jail ...following their child abuse arrests. mona kirk and daniel panico were released...after their attorneys argued they aren't a flight risk ..and couldn't afford their $300 thousand bail. they have pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges. investigators say their 11-year-old... 13- year-old... and 14-year-old have been living in a shack in the middle of the desert for the last four years. officials say there was no electricity...no water...and very little food. (grant) the promoter of the failed "fyre festival" in the bahamas... has pleaded guilty to fraud charges. you might remember... the festival billed itself as an ultra luxurious music festival over two weekends last april

and may... and it turned out to be less than that. customers hoping to see major musical acts arrived in the bahamas to find out they were canceled. and the upscale accommodations and gourmet food consisted of white tents and cheese sandwiches. participants paid up to 12- thousand dollars to attend. 26-year-old billy mcfarland entered the guilty plea today... admitting to using fake documents to trick investors in the festival. actually easing in states where abuse had been the highest ... but abuse of hydrocodone and similar drugs is rising in new areas.(grant) overall, the number of opioid overdoses jumped 30 percent last year ... and almost seventy percent in the midwest. (catherine) the c=d=c says it decided to track overdoses instead of deaths.. that's because there's often a delay in reporting deaths. and - when you're dealing with a fast=moving epidemic, timely information is crucial. ambulance natacross the u=s more than 1=thousand people an hour, are taken to an emergency room after overdosing on opioids ... either prescribed or illegal drugs like fentanyl.the c=d=c says emergency room visits in large cities jumped twice as fast as those in rural areas. only 16 states are in the c=d=c database.among them ... overdoses jumped more than 100 percent in wisconsin and delaware, 80 percent in

pennsylvania and 66 percent in illinois.the states in orange and yellow had smaller increases, while west virginia, kentucky, massachusetts and new hampsire saw a decrease.natcalifornia wasn't on the lost, but it does track opioid prescriptions.in most of northern california, the average is well over one per inhabitant.that's not the case in the bay area.sonoma and napa have the highest.san francisco and santa clara have the lowest, while the rest are near the state average of 600 per 1=thousand residents. it happened in fairfield this morning on clay bank road near sprig court. police say a 17-year-old girl was walking when someone drove by and shot her. the girl is expected to be okay. police say they do not believe the shooting is random. they do not have a detailed description of the gunman or the car. (vicki) also in the north bay... the sonoma county district attorney's office is directing staff to begin clearing over three thousand cannabis-related convictions. the da revised the policy...in response to proposition 64...which state voters approved in 20-16... to legalize the adult use of marijuana. sonoma county is now processing petitions from people...who are calling for their sentences to be reduced or expunged. (grant) in the south bay... the santa clara county board of supervisors have approved plans to study a possible ban on gun shows. the proposed ban would affect gun sales at the county fairgrounds and other county-owned sites. the county attorney will draft an ordinance... prohibiting the

possession or sale of guns on property owned or leased by the county. the counsel will also report to the board about other options for improving public safety by reducing gun violence. (grant) a man is dead...after a hit-and-run. it happened around seven last night on southbound 280 in san jose. officers say a honda traveling out of control hit a tan toyota sedan...driven by a man with three children in the backseat. the man driving the honda then got out of his car..and was struck by another vehicle. he died at the scene. the vehicle that hit him... did not stop. the three children in the toyota were not injured in the crash. (vicki) on the peninsula... a former youth basketball coach in san mateo county is sentenced to 50 years in prison for child molestation. julio ortiz was arrested in september 20- 16 after c-h-p officers found him in a car performing sexual acts on a 14-year-old boy. police say ortiz met the victim two years earlier when he was coaching basketball at an elementary school. four

brushed aside concerns that the move could lead to a trade war and backfire on the u-s economy. the president said cohn played an important role in pushing a g-o-p tax reform last year - and he thanked cohn for his service. (grant) the trump administration will allow the imports of some african animal trophies into the u-s. those imports were restricted by the obama white house. interior department officials say those imports will be considered on a case-by-case basis. the big game trophies include african elephants, lions and a type of antelope. the department says the import permits will be based on the size of animal population, to promote conservation. the animal trophy imports caused a split between president trump and the department last year. (vicki) washington and the world are keeping a close eye on a potential breakthrough in the standoff with north korea over its nuclear program. kim jong un now saying he may be ready to talk with the united states -- and put an

(grant) new tonight at 5... an oregon man is suing dick's sport goods and walmart... claiming age discrimination. this comes after the retailers restricted gun sales to adults 21-and older in the wake of the florida school shooting. the 20-year-old man says he was discriminated against when he tried to buy a rifle. oregon law allows residents to

buy shotguns or rifles starting at age 18. the lawsuit is believed to be the first filed over the new gun policies. walmart responded to the lawsuit saying they will defend their new policy. (vicki) the city of los angeles is promising to permanently protect the playboy mansion. there were talks to designate the property where late playboy founder hugh hefner once lived -- as a historical-cultural landmark. the property owner daren metropoulos came to the decision instead to put a permanent protection that would prevent the 20-thousand- square-foot mansion from demolition.. playboy enterprises owned the mansion from 1971 until 2016 when it was sold to metropoulos. an agreement allowed hefner to live there until his death last september. hefner was

(grant) take a look at this video. a little girl is seen dangling from a chairlift at the bear mountain ski resort in big bear. her parents say she slipped from the chairlift after it started moving ... and the girl's ski instructor caught her by her hoodie.. staff members grabbed a tarp and were able to catch the little girl. the girl suffered bruising on her neck from the hoodie and helmet. bear mountain officials are investigating the incident. keep our cholesterol levels in check. now-- that message is intended for more than just adults. (grant) health experts are warning parents-- and trying to prevent a childhood cholesterol epidemic. mark hiller reports. dr. jill mccoy, md -- commonwealth health pediatrician"we see it in the pediatric population a lot." pediatrician jill mccoy is talking about kids with high cholesterol. for some, it's a case of bad genetics inheriting a disorder preventing their bodies from removing low-density lipoprotein -- or "bad" cholesterol. but for many other children, dr. mccoy blames something else."that's why i've been seeing the increase in cholesterol... just the higher incidence of obesity in the pediatric population.obesity is often fueled by fatty foods and lack of exercise -- turning our youngest generation into couch potatoes. a new report out this week in the journal "pediatrics" finds more than 15 percent of two-to-five year olds are obese and that 40 percent of teens between 16 and 19 are as well."kids that tend to play video games and watch television might snack more, you know, picking

doors of the main jail.......walking right past a crowd of media without saying a word .... released on 30 thousand dollars bail.do you have anything to say? your fans are worried about you.ignoring the media smith ducked into a waiting suv and was driven away.shortly after that this mug shot was released.smith turned himself into police eariler today after san francisco police issued an arrest warrant for the former oakland raider and former 49er yesterday jail records show he was booked on four charges related to this weekend's incident..... domestic charges, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism. all misdeameanors. this stems from an incident this past saturday night where he allegedly assaulted his ex girlfriend on the 600 block of bush street. police responed to the scene after the victim called 9-11."the victim is calling us saying the suspect threw her around the room and bit her wrist. he climbed out of the window and may have gotten into a black range rover."smith allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. the victims injuries are considered non life

threatening. this isn't the first time smith has been in trouble with the law. back in 2015 smith was released from the 49ers after he was arrested for a dui hit and run in santa clara. he was then picked up by the oakland raiders but suspected in november of that same year for violating the nfl's substance abuse policies. he has not played since. and after this most recent incident, the raiders announced smith has been cut from the team. (on cam)(steve) two people were arrested - and are accused of being in possesion of bomb making materials. the question now -- what were they planning to do with it? kron4's haaziq madyun has the story... sotevacuated from the homewood suites hotel in oakland monday following the arrest of hotel guest jeremy guy who was found allegedly in possession of explosive material during a chp traffic stopsotit was during that trafic stop that the chp oficers learned that jeremy guy and his father ronald guy, who you see being arrested in this chp photo, were guests at homewood suites, where the search for more explosives prompted the evacuation of the hotel. this guest asked not to

last decade. the old parking lot near a-t-and-t park will be converted into a mixed-use housing and commercial complex. the mayor says the new project will add thousands of jobs, create 15-hundred new homes and improve public transit. 40-percent of the new homes will become affordable housing. (steve) in other big news - united states attorney general jeff sessions is expected to make a big announcement in sacramento tomorrow concerning sanctuary cities. (catherine) a woman in tulare county has been arrested - accused of holding a 3-year-old girl at knifepoint - and stabbing the child's mother. police say teresa madrigal was on a greyhound bus headed for oakland whenshe did it... but everyone agrees the incident could have been worse - if not for other passengers who stepped in to help. justin lum has the story.

(pkg)a delusional woman talking to herself and making death threats on the greyhound...that's how witnesses describe 48-year-old teresa madrigal...tulare county sheriff mike boudreaux says madrigal got on the bus at a bakersfield stop...then witnesses say she targeted a three-year-old girl."because this lady was ballistic. to threaten a child. you're gonna kill a child. for what? like what is wrong with you?" boudreaux says 45 minutes into the trip...madrigal walked over to the little girl and held a knife to her neck...the mother wrestled her daughter away but got stabbed in the stomach...as other passengers went to stop madrigal...andrew smith says he used his sweater to put pressure on the mother's wound."she says i'm scared. i said don't be scared sweetheart. hold my hand and squeeze. calm down, you'll be okay."meanwhile, this man stepped up...nathan wanhala says he and a man named spencer williams tried to snatch the knife away from madrigal."i was grabbing her fingers to try and pry away the knife. the bus driver had her other arm. she slipped away and that's when she started going at herself with the knife." boudreaux says madrigal ended up stabbing herself in the

neck and chest area...before wanhala and williams got a hold of the knife and threw it away...keeping other passengers safe...boudreaux made sure to check on the toddler at the hospital.< sheriff mike boudreaux/tulare county sheriff's office>"in talking to her, she was terrified. and the incident scared her very, very much." wanhala is from santa cruz... and deputies are making sure he gets home safely...he says pure instinct drove him to do the right thing."i don't consider myself a hero but if i was in that same predicament. i wish and hope somebody would help me too." with mountains lions "...they were magnificent, i had never seen one that close before..." boulder creek residents priscilla unti and ben slaughter were awakened about 2 a.m. monday by a noise they thought might be a prowler just outside their bedroom window.priscilla unti "....so we pulled back the curtains and ben's jaw dropped, he said no way because there were these two big mountain lions right there..."boulder creek firefighter ben slaughter then grabbed his cell phone and started shooting video of the two fully grown animals, who made themselves at home on the patio for the next twenty minutes.priscilla unti "....the light was on and we think they saw us and they were just poking around and growling and pawing at each other...."priscilla is diligent about bringing in her food at night but suspects the mountain lions may have been attracted somehow by her dog chloe or her neighbors pets. she marveled at how the playful they were, suggesting that perhaps they are a couple. priscilla unti "....just because of the way that they were interacting, they were playful and we thought maybe they were a a couple and might have been trying to mate..."

(catherine) a strange and frightening incident on a united express flight that left from s-f-o yesterday..

a passenger tried to open a cabin door mid-flight. abigail taylor has more on what happened... scott smith took this picture just after getting off the plane in boise.he was sitting right behind the woman who attempted to open the cabin door mid-flight.he says there seemed to be something wrong with the woman before the plane ever took off from san francisco.scott smith, witness/prefonted beeper graphics:"right after we pushed back from the gate, i look up and the seat is just shaking. i could hear, i don't know if they were arguing or what. and honestly i was surprised we didn't stop at that point."he says then the small commercial plane like this one here took off just like normal.scott smith, witness/prefonted beeper graphics:"and then about half-way into the flight, i looked up and could tell that seat was empty. and then, i heard a little bit of commotion, and i saw two other passengers dart toward the front and i knew something was going on."he says it was hard to see what was happening because there was a curtain separating him from first class but what he heard was disturbing.scott smith,

witness/prefonted beeper graphics:"she kept repeating certain phrases, distinctly, she said 'god has all the data, god has all the data' like two or three times. then at least twice i heard her say, 'i don't have any data, i don't have any data.' just unusual things. she made some comment like we landed in boise 15 minutes ago and at that time we were still in the air."he says the captain came over the intercom after that. scott smith, united express passenger:"he said 'thank you for remaining calm. the seat belt sign is lit. please remain in your seats until we land. and thank you for not letting a passenger reach the front door and we ask that you don't let that happen, whatever it takes.'"he says one of the passengers held the woman down on the floor for the rest of the flight. witnesses say the woman was handcuffed and led away by police after landing... she has not been publicly identified - and is now in custody in idaho. (steve) and one of the cofounders of ben and jerry's was arrested. we'll tell you why the cops chose to put him on ice.

(steve) investigators are now saying that an engine blade failure caused a united airlines jet to lose power in one of its two engines over the pacific last month. the national transportation safety board said today that a fan blade separated and led to the loss of the cover on the right-side engine of the boeing 777 on february 13. the engine failure occurred as the plane with 363 passengers and 15 crew members approached hawaii from san francisco.

the pilots shut down the engine after getting a warning of a compressor failure. they made a safe emergency landing in honolulu. (catherine) a report in the los angeles times says that people in san francisco are getting angry with driverless cars -- and attacking them. the report says there have been at least two incidents. in january - a man ran over and hit and damaged a g-m driverless car that was stopped at a light in the mission district. later that same month - another g-m self driving car was stopped behind a taxi in the city. the taxi driver jumped out and hit its front passenger side window. as to exactly why people are doing it.........it's not clear. (steve) police arrested one of the co-founders of ben and jerry's ice cream on saturday. but it might not be what you would expect.... ben cohen led a group in what they called an "f-35 jet blast demo." the protest was designed to show people what it would sound like if the city of burlington, in northwestern

vermont, allowed an f-35 base at its airport. they took a truck with a massive sound system setup and started blasting sounds that were supposed to emulate the fighter jet.to emulate the fighter jet.ánat of fighter jet noiseáben cohenében & jerry's co-founder: "we are sorry to disturb people. we don't want to do this. this woman who runs the store here said, 'everything in my store is rattling, things are falling off the shelves.'" the group blasted the noise 13 different times. police ticketed them for violating a city noise law. after a third warning, the group was arrested and later released.
