keep our cholesterol levels in check. now-- that message is intended for more than just adults. (grant) health experts are warning parents-- and trying to prevent a childhood cholesterol epidemic. mark hiller reports. dr. jill mccoy, md -- commonwealth health pediatrician"we see it in the pediatric population a lot." pediatrician jill mccoy is talking about kids with high cholesterol. for some, it's a case of bad genetics inheriting a disorder preventing their bodies from removing low-density lipoprotein -- or "bad" cholesterol. but for many other children, dr. mccoy blames something else."that's why i've been seeing the increase in cholesterol... just the higher incidence of obesity in the pediatric population.obesity is often fueled by fatty foods and lack of exercise -- turning our youngest generation into couch potatoes. a new report out this week in the journal "pediatrics" finds more than 15 percent of two-to-five year olds are obese and that 40 percent of teens between 16 and 19 are as well."kids that tend to play video games and watch television might snack more, you know, picking

unhealthy snacks while they are sitting still doing these things."by allowing this to happen, parents who want the best for their children may set them up for serious health problems."they're going to be more at risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, such as heart disease at younger ages." like most pediatricians, dr. mccoy would screen children who were overweight or obese for cholesterol issues. but recently, the american academy of pediatrics recommended that all kids ages 9 to 11 be screened for this potential cholesterol threat.in the meantime, parents can intervene by encouraging at least an hour of physical activity each day and avoiding fast food and other processed foods."fresh, you know, fruits and vegetables, cooking at home, baking, broiling, grilling rather than frying will help decrease that as well and if you're choosing leaner meats -- chicken, poultry, fish, you know leaner beef and things like that."
