you spellings of names of people speaking at the press conference. chris childs john bennett again, we are listening to the names of some law enforcement officers and personnel who will be speaking at this press conference. we have a number of jurisdictions working in coordination. press conference push back now to 7:45. we will bring that to you live when it happens.

the gunman and all three hostages are dead. this situation started at 10:20 a.m. we will begin confirmation from law enforcement that is the case during the press conferences. again all three women have been killed and the gunman as well. this center at yountville, the biggest in the country, is paralyzed. children at the veterans facility were escorted off safely and sent back to their campus in napa. you cannot imagine what the

parents were going through. this started with a 911 call. deputies were on scene immediately after and a shootout in sued. the gunman was not injured or the deputy. but there was no confirmation that any of the people inside, the hostages, were or -- were okay or not. no confirmation between 10:30 a.m until this was ultimately resolved in some shape or form. we do not know how law enforcement found those bodies. someone on facebook that was sheltering in place at 3 pm posted on facebook a video that showed military style personnel marching into the building where the gunman had taken

these three women hostage. in fact there were seven initially taken hostage and he allowed four of them to go. we spoke to the husband of one of the for women about to leave. a range of emotions for that man. his wife is out safely but she had three colleagues still inside. tragically now we have learned that those three women are dead along with the suspect. this is a golf course where several helicopters landed with law enforcement. this is when we first let everybody know. joining us now live on the

phone is ellen. what can you tell us? >> i'm at the front entrance of the veterans home here at yountville . i see a procession of cars. mostly veterans or family members of people who were allowed to live here at the veterans home. they are slowly being let in and check with credentials to make sure these people do live at this location. they are being let back into their homes. at the same time they are devastated by the news we have just learned. i spoke to one elderly woman. she's familiar with this program.

she didn't say how many years ago she came out here to this facility but she says it is young veterans that were most recently released from a term in afghanistan and a portion of them have problems with drugs or alcohol. she is devastated by the news tonight. >> no doubt. what is the emotional makeup of those folks being allowed back in? thing must be scared to go back into a place where four people are now dead. >> that is exactly correct. waiting eight hours to get back home and now to hear this news. many stayed at the veterans community center around the corner meantime. again, this

is breaking news if you are just joining us. terisa esticio confirming from her sources that the shooter and the three hostages he was holding are dead. this began after 10 am this morning with reports of shots fired at the california veterans home in yountville , the largest veterans home in the united states, 1100 people living here. many have spouses living here with them. again, the building in which this occurred, the pathway home, is an independent facility and has been around since 2008 . it treats younger

veterans that were in iraq prame -- iraq and afghanistan. a very specific surface -- service, a nonprofit without state or federal funding. the gunman is believed to have been there as recently as two weeks ago getting treatment before he was released. it seems like we are not getting the audio from terisa esticio . we will work that out. meanwhile this was the scene earlier as roads were blocked off and people were sheltered in place. more than 1000 people were affected by this. it was felt not only in the

yountville area in napa county but also nine miles south at the high school that was rehearsing at the theater that they have there on the campus of the veterans home, the lincoln theater which, terisa esticio, i know you've been there before to volunteer. this has to be a very emotional event. people in the community have come to know and love this place. now we are seeing carnage. this is a beautiful and wonderful facility. the pathway house really serving those veterans. sadly, these people devoted their lives, the hostages, to try to help veterans. a very tragic end to this

situation. this unfolded at 10:20 a.m. reports of shots fired here at the veterans' home. a usual peaceful beautiful facility. veterans find comfort here and resources to help them usually. it is a beautiful facility for those that have served our country. now this is heartbreaking.>> terisa esticio as you know we are awaiting a press conference set to begin at 7:45. we await to hear that and terisa esticio you talked about this facility that is geared towards helping veterans get back into society. now they have one of their own

affecting others. he was getting treatment and now he walked in according to witnesses in a calm manner with body armor and holding these people hostage during a going away party and a meeting for employees. >> reporter: i was told it was a monthly staff meeting and in addition to that, some people were retiring . it was a somewhat large gathering. a husband of one of the staff members say it was a small staff meeting, eight tight knit staff meeting. man be -- when i have talked to people here they are very sad and shaking up. trying to get

their head wrapped around what happened at their home. this started at 10:20 a.m and eight hours later we were still trying to get information. one person that lived here said they saw s.w.a.t. personnel go in during the afternoon. we don't know if the hostage was already dead or if there was a gunfight. >> pretty chilling at the 6 pm press conference. no tangible information at that time except that there had been no communication with the gunman or the hostages since 10:30 a.m. was that a negative sign to you?>> reporter: without a doubt. law enforcement sources told me

they have thermal imaging devices and robots that can go in and ascertain whether hostages are still alive. i tried to ask the napa sheriff if they were doing tactical work in that regard and he would not tell us anything. but he did say at the time that they had had no contact with the gunman. they knew him, they knew his cell phone number. they been calling him, but no line of communication had been established. so that was not a good sign and that was that to p.m this afternoon. >> thank you terisa esticio . and children were close by up

in yountville rehearsing at the lincoln theater . all of those kids had to shelter in place. we had incredible reporting about how those children climbed through windows to get out before law enforcement escorted them off the campus. >> yes i watched one mom who had been talking to one of the kids inside. she told me they were trying to climb out the window so they could get down onto the ground and out of line of sight with the gunman because there were windows that were within the straight shot to the lincoln theater from the gunman. 80 children from a high school in napa here practicing for an annual play when this unfolded. i cannot even imagine as a mother how horrible it was to get that call that this was

unfolding on a friday afternoon.>> horrible. terisa esticio, thank you for that . now let's go to spencer blake. moments ago i know you spoke to a lot of kids at the school. parents who were showing up. they had a basketball tournament at that high school. certainly a situation you never want to see play out when you are a parent. you hear that your kid is in a shelter in place situation. >> reporter: this affected many people at that basketball game. now fortunately many parents said that their kids were not at the theater. now everybody has been hearing about it here in napa county.

many had loved ones or others that work there in the area that were on lockdown. especially a few hours ago. you can see how widespread this is and how many people are affected. not just the hostages and their families and that kind of thing but those on lockdown as well. the kids at the high school were 1st and foremost on everyone's minds . it grabs your attention when something like this happens. >> see and a high school about nine miles away from yountville. now we await a news conference . sources confirming that the gun men and all three hostages, women, are all dead tonight.

shortly before 6 pm this evening law enforcement personnel made entry to the room where we felt hostages in the suspect were. we made the discovery of three deceased females and one deceased male suspect. this is tragic news and one we hoped we wouldn't have to give to the public. i would like to take a moment to give credit to the initial responding napa county sheriff's deputy you put himself in harms way because of the active situation. he exchanged gunfire with the initial suspect. we credit him with saving the lives of others in the la -- in the area. i would like to also [

indiscernible -- audio cutting out ] >> it appears we have lost that signal at the press conference. they were confirming, tragically, that four people are dead, three hostages and the gunman. just before 6 pm law enforcement went into the building where the hostages were being held. we've heard that law enforcement found three women dead as well as the suspect. and they were quick to credit the first responder on scene, napa county deputy who had a shoot out with the gunman and according to law enforcement save lives. we had on -- bomb sniffing dogs. the explosive ordinance

condition was called and. the car is safe and there is no threat to public safety at this time. finally i want to reassure the public that there is no further threat to public safety in order is being restored. our hearts go out to those families grieving tonight. we express our deepest and most sincere condolences to the families. thank you. we will take a few questions.>> [ indiscernible -- low volume ] >> ongoing investigation. three females and one male suspect. it is all under investigation and i cannot comment.

far too early to say if these women were chosen at random. it is under investigation. we don't know anything exactly it's under investigation, i apologize. >> what kind of gun was it? >> it would be too soon to say. the investigation will take some time to conclude and we do not anticipate to have a lot of answers tonight. but the names of the victims and suspect will be released by the napa county coroner as soon as the next of kin have been notified. crime scene technicians are investigating.

we only found a cell phone inside the vehicle, no bombs. i cannot talk about tactics, especially with s.w.a.t. teams and when we go in or don't. public safety is our number one goal. we work very closely together to achieve the best possible outcome that we possibly could. >> [ indiscernible -- low volume ] >> i have not been up there. i don't know.>> you said you found a cell phone. what about bombs?
