tonight at 5... students across the bay area stand up-- and walk out of class exactly one month after 17 people were shot and killed at a florida high school. at 10:00 this morning... students showed solidarity for those victims-- and campaigned for changes to gun laws. good evening i'm grant lodes. (catherine) and i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis. thousands of students all over the nation walked out of class today. you can see crowds of students in san francisco, los angeles, new york pouring out of buildings.. also parkland florida - where the shooting happen a month ago. students all had the same message -- they want to see action on fighting gun violence. (catherine) the student walkouts happened in suburbs and cities across the bay area. (grant) kron4's maureen kelly was in alameda this morning where nearly two-thousand middle and high school students left class. at 10 am students trickled out of alameda high....and spent

17 minutes in silence, one minute for every victim of the horrific valentine's day tragedy at a florida high school. those who bore witness say it filled them with sadness....and anger.it makes you really realize all those people most of those were 14-year-olds like babies they didn't get to live their lives, we shouldn't have to have moments of silence because there shouldn't be any school shootings we shouldn't have to have this problemnatshey hey ho ho the nra has got to gothe silence turned into shouting as students from all of the public high schools on the island marched off their campuses as residents cheered them on.i hope their voices are heard i hope we finally get some sort of changenats rise up, get downthey gathered at washington park and rallied against gun violence and for stricter gun control, chanting and carrying signs with the shocking tally of the victims.others simply stating enough is enough.things that go on in this country that are completely unacceptable the only way to make a difference is to make sure our opinions are heard and voiced especially kids because it's our lives are in jeopardy so oftena small group of pro gun students walked out as well.but said they are not counterprotesting the event. we're all against gun violence everyone hears it goes violence know once for violence at least not here some younger students like this second grader participated as well.i asked about his signpeople are dying so i want to help other

pie-dad...the student body president at moreau catholic high school in hayward ... where students marched and held signs along mission avenue. in the south bay .... students at san jose's presentation high school walked out. one sign seen here reads: protect kids, not guns. in san francisco... students marched down the embarcadero... demandign changes in the gun laws. they were chanting...'no more silence...end gun violence.' and in the north bay...many students at tam high school... in mill valley.... were joined by their parents and even residents of a nearby retirement home... as they asked passing drivers to show their support by honking their horns. one prominent sign...help stop this madness. for a lot of us this is going to become our life mission (catherine) the

national protests, led by students at florida's marjorie stoneham douglas high school in parkland. tens of thousands of students took part. pam moore is in the newsroom to show us some of the images. pam? (pam) their message was simple ... keep me safe.the students from coast to coast ... demanding to be protected from violence in schools. in portland oregon, students formed a peace sign.in los angeles, they spelled out the word "enough."in the nation's capital, demonstrators turned their backs on the white house and sood silently for 17 minutes ... honoring the 17 victims of the ginman in parkland, florida. "it feels so good that so many people are supporting us." exactly one month after they were evacuated under armed guard, parkland shooting survivors left their classes again. "i do not feel safe. i still don't feel safe. "today's march had special meaning in littleton, colorado, where 13 students were massacred at columbine high school in 1999. "why? why does this keep happening?' it is not only florida that is pushing for change, it is not only parkland. that it is everyone is america who is not just

asking for change but demanding it."chanting nat maryland students took their message to the seats of power. "we will accept nothing less than comprehensive gun control. we will shame our national policymakers into protecting us not just in schools but in churches, movie theaters, on the streets and the communities of color which are disproportionately affected by the sickness of gun violence." civil rights pioneer john lewis urged them to keep up their fight. "you will have a victory, and it will be a victory for all america. it will be a victory for our world."inside the capitol... the yeas are 407, the nays are 10.the house of representative s passed a measure aimed at curbing school violence. by training school officials and police to respond to mental health issues. were all about. the students from around the country will be back in washington on march 24th.. for what's called - the march for our lives back to you in the studio.. (grant) the national rifle association sent out a defiant tweet as students were walking out of class. it included a picture of an assault-style rifle and a comment saying: "i'll control my own guns, thank you." the nra has come under increased criticism since last month's school shooting. the gunman used an ar-15 assault rifle. san leandro high school students: "i don't know if i should go out the window or jump out the door. i was that scared. we you know we hear about this all the time on the news, kids are shooting up the schools, so things like this we definitely have to take serious">the graffiti was found wednesday morning written on a stall in the boys restroom at san leandro high school, in san leandrosotthat happened around 10am. san leandro unified school district superintendent mike mclaughlin explains why parents were notified about an hour latersotsan leandro police officers were called insotthe lockdown was released at 1pm. school also ended early at that time. however san leandro

the washington post: the closures could affect 33-thousand jobs... they're expected to happen over time - not all at once.the chain filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last fall, saddled with debt that hurt its attempts to compete. it pledged then to stay open, but had weak sales during the critical holiday season.the company declined to comment. (grant) a big story we are following tonight... the pathway home -- which was the scene of a deadly hostage hostage situation friday -- is closing. as kron4's philippe djegal reports.. the mental health program has suspended operations indefinately at the california veterans home in yountville. (philippe) the building is still surrounded by crime scene tape. some windows remain busted open. there are bullet holes on the walls... and, the deadly shooting is still fresh in everyone's minds... a spokesperson for the pathway home says he's not sure anyone would even feel comfortable visiting this facility considering what happened here last week. larry kamer, who speaks for pathway...

says the board of directors are looking into the failures in security protocols that allowed a veteran to walk in with a gun and kill three people who work here and himself. a facility where the gunman once lived. pathway home is also still mourning the loss of the three women who didn't make it out alive. so for now, operations here have been suspended indefinitely.larry kamer/pathway home- " right now... kamer says the residents who lived at the pathway home are staying in hotels until the future of the non-profit organization is figured out. in yountville, philippe djegal, kron four news. from over.chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is standing by with mor eon what's ahead. lawrence karnow: we had numerous showers and thunderstorms todayh. highs were cool in the 50s. there were even some snow flakes over our highest mountains. showers continue to show up on doppler radar. we could see a few more shower tonight but they will be more isolated. on the satellite you can see the low passing just south of the bay area. it helped to bring a few more downpours and showers but the main focus of this part of the storm was further south. the air remains very unstable and another storm will begin to drop in tomorrow bringing more rain and showers with isolated thunderstorms. the snow level will lower to around 3,000 feet. highs will be cool and in the low to upper 50s. showers will continue on friday with more thunderstorms possible. we could see a few lingering showers on saturday but the trend over the weekend will be toward drier weather. sunday looks dry with partly cloudy skies. another storm brings possibly heavy rain to the bay area on the first day of spring.

more problems for united airlines -- even as it faces continued outrage over the latest death of a pet.... a french bulldog puppy which a flight attendant insisted be put in the overhead compartment.. witnesses say the woman who owned it was adamant about not putting little 'kokito' up there in its carrier -- but finally gave in. she was traveling with a young daughter and infant monday. she said she heard the puppy bark at one point but was holding the baby and there was turbulence at times....and couldn't get up. at the end of the 3 and a half hour flight -- the dog was dead. passengers say the woman and her little girl were devastated - and began sobbing uncontrollably. united has apologized - admitting it was a mistake.

the airline may soon be issuing yet another apology. united is investigating after a family's kansas-bound dog was mistakenly flown to japan yesterday.they went to pick up their 10-year-old german shepard from a cargo facility - and were given a great dane. they say it took hours to confirm where their dog 'irgo' had been taken... at last word, they're still waiting to get him back. it's just the latest in a string of problems for united. their track record for animal deaths is off the charts compared to other airlines. just one example -- they killed a prize winning rabbit in april of last year - which was on its way to becoming the world's largest. last year alone - united reported 18 animal deaths and 13 injuries..... it's at least the fourth year in a row that united has hit the worst record for in- flight animals deaths. filing a federal lawsuit. prominent civil rights attorney john burris announced the lawsuit today. elena mondragon was pregnant... when she was shot and killed one year ago today. it happened in hayward when officers were trying to arrest her boyfriend... who was wanted for multiple armed robberies. the two officers who fired at mondragon have recently been cleared of any wrongdoing in the shooting. in the lawsuit.. burris says the officers should have tried to arrest mondragon's boyfriend instead of opening fire. going to be a wet week...and so far it's been just that. with very few bay area spots left out of the action.(grant) it may not be that "march miracle" that makes an occasional appearance and saves the day -- but it's welcome nonetheless...as kron four's rob fladeboe found out... in los gatos. this was santa cruz avenue around noon here in downtown los gatos. after what can only be described as a few intermittent nuisance showers this morning, the rain got more serious this afternoon. umbrellas sprouted along the sidewalks as the lunch crowd and others dodged the latest downpour. water pouring off off roof tops into down spouts and into storm drains is a good sign. in an average year, los gatos by this time might see somewhere around twelve and half inches of rain but so far it's received about six and a half inches. a year ago today, it had received a

whopping fifteen point 61 inches. normal would be just under fifteen. so the proverbial cup is just half full but the window shoppers and others i ran into weren't about to let that dampen their spirits. bring it on they say. elizabeth holmes - a stanford dropout once called "the next steve jobs" -- is beingcharged with 'massive fraud' by u.s. regulators... that's while she was leading the silicon valley blood testing start-up called 'theranos.' the securities and exchange commission simultaneously filed a civil lawsuit today - announcing a settlement in which holmes will step down from authority and pay millions in fines and stock to

be returned to the company. the s-e-c accuses theranos and holmes of "elaborate, years-long fraud" that deceived investorsinto providing more than 700- million dollars. an example - telling them the company's devices were being used by the defense dept -- when they were not.. theranos was formed in 2003 to create cheaper, more efficient medical testing. it had to void two years of blood tests following a 2015 wall street journal report questioningits methods. (grant) an accidental shooting in a monterey county classroom...the shooter...was the teacher. that teacher ... who is also a reserve police officer... was giving a public safety lesson in the classroom ... when the gun went off. three students were injured by falling debris. sierra starks talked to one of those students about his injuries. 17-year-old fermin gonzales was one of the students injured when his teacher, dennis alexander, was checking to see if the gun he brought to his administration of justice class was loaded ...

that's when it accidentally went off. fermin gonzales: "you could see like splatters on the ceiling, like, splatters of the fragments on the ceiling." some of those fragments ended up in fermin's neck. fermin gonzales, student: "and then i look at my shirt like that and then theres like blood on my shirt and then i like wipe my neck kind of and bullet fragment comes off my neck."fermin says ... mr. alexander, excused himself for a moment, came back and apologized, but class continued. fermin gonzales, student:"i left school, to make sure the metal was out of my neck."that's when he called his dad.fermin gonzalez, father:"i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it i just kept saying what on the phone, what? i couldn't believe it its just so crazy that the teacher teaching them about gun safety shoots one off and hits the ceiling. and then hearing that he got hit was just i mean crazy." firearms are forbidden in classrooms around the monterey peninsula unified school district... pk diffenbaugh, school district superintendent: "we have to have a safe environment for our kids and clearly in this incident it was not, prototcols were not followed." mr. alexander has been a reserve police sand city for more than a decade. this incident at seaside high comes at a time when the national arming teachers ... now hitting close to home for this seaside family. fermin gonzalez, father: "this was an incidient with a trained professional, if you just give it to everybody - a teacher at the school, this could happen again and again, and it could be a lot worse."

(catherine) local first... here are the stories we're tracking in your neighborhood tonight.. (grant) police are searching for the driver who inured a 12- year-old girl in a hit and run in the south bay. this is surveillance video from a kron-4 viewer-- showing the moment the girl was hit.

she was walking áin the ácrosswalk at north 17th and east julian streets. it happened just before 9:00 on monday morning. police are now looking for the driver of the 4-door toyota camry. the girl was taken to the hospital but she will be okay. police describe the driver as a white woman, 40 to 50 years old with brown hair. (grant) a student in morgan hill is arrested after police say he made a threat at ann sobrato high school. police say they responded to the school to investigate a threatening message found on campus. authorities were able to identify and arrest the student who is accused of making the threat. police are now encouraging their parents to talk to their children about the severity of their actions. there has been an increase of threats being made at schools across the bay area. (catherine) in the east bay... police have arrested a man after a convenience store robbery in concord. it happened last month.. but police just

announced the arrest today. the suspect has been identified as 57-year-old shunn oliver. during the robbery-- police say he pretended to buy a bag of chips, and then demanded money from the register. (grant) in the north bay.... vallejo police officers are now carrying a life saving drug -- narcan. in an emergency situation... narcan can reverse opioid over-doses. after training earlier this month... each patrol officer can now give a give single dose of the drug. this comes as the city is seeing an increase in heroin and fentanyl overdoses. (grant) one person in marin county has been hospitalized with shell-fish poisoning. this comes after the marin county health department issued a warning last week... telling people not to eat recreationally harvested shellfish. the warning includes oysters... clams and mussels. a recent sample detected a toxin called "p-s-p." the toxin can make people sick...and cooking the shellfish does not get rid of it. state- certified ácommercial

shellfish are still safe to eat. (grant)(grant) (grant) tonight we're learning firsthand about what happened behind closed doors when a lone gunman took hostages at the veterans home in yountville last friday.. the three women who were killed at a treatment facility there - included clinical psychologist jennifer gonsalez who was several months pregnant. (catherine) the gunman had walked in as a retirement party was underway. kron four's terisa estacio talked with one of the women attending the party.... she joins us on set with more on that conversation. clinician haley rekdahl in front of the makeshift memorial at pathway home for the three women who lost their lives... she told me that it has been so difficult to process all that happened. but she shared with me what it was like to come face to face with the gunman and how he shattered lives that fateful day. did it all happen fast? like 5 minutes? yeah. i have blocked some things out, but yeah, like 5 minutes. he had his gun against him. he walked in with it and he was just very calm. just kind of emotionless. did he say anything to you? he, didnt say anything. he at first said, veterans, you can go. because there were couple of veterans with us. and then 4 staff members that he let me go, all he said was first name, you can go. there were 2 before me, i was the 3rd, then he let me go. he motioned me to toward the door. he wanted us to walk out, i walked out past him and out the door and then ran from there. did you hear shots? i was out before the shots were fired. we passed a sheriff's deputy on way out. we were driving out in a vehicle, way before it happened. where you hopeful at the time you ran out, yeah, at the time, i didn't think this would be the outcome. i have been visting

hawking has died...and tonight-- people from all over the world are reacting and processing the news of his death. considered the world's greatest living scientist... hawking was known both in scientific circles and pop culture. he explained the mysteries of space...time...and black holes in his book " a brief history of time"...which has sold over 10 million copies. perhaps

most stunning: hawking had lived with a-l-s since 19-63. he spent much of his life confined to a wheelchair...re lying on a speech synthesizer. the 76 year old leaves behind three children and three grandchildren. the actor who played hawking in a film about his life has described him as the funniest man he ever met. eddie red--mayne, who won an oscar for his portrayal of hawking "the theory of everything," says quote-- "we have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man i have ever had the pleasure to meet." (grant) the san ramon police department is working to combat and increase in crime. police chief dan pratt presented the numbers to the city council last night. the biggest issues included property crime... car burglaries... and theft. among the department's initiatives...it's urging people to register their surveillance cameras with police. "some suspects shot a flare gun residences and we were able to capture footage of the vehicle. we put that out on social media and it helped identify the suspects."(grant) the san ramon city council previously proposed a city-wide camera system

...however we are told that will not make it into this year's budget. (catherine new video tonight shows the snow in the sierra really piling up...because of theselate winter storms.. this was the scene in heavenly today. heavy snow and strong winds will continue on and off tomorrow-- and into saturday. higher elevations could get up to 5-feet of new snow. drivers are being warned that they could face white-out conditions, chain controls and road closures. right now there's an avalanche watch between yuba and ebbetts passes... including the greater lake tahoe area. seem to be loving it. lawrence karnow: we had numerous showers and thunderstorms todayh. highs were cool in the 50s. there were even some snow flakes over our highest mountains. showers continue to show up on doppler radar. we could see a few more shower tonight but they will be more isolated. on the satellite you can see the low passing just south of the bay area. it helped to bring a few more downpours and showers but the main focus of this part of the storm was further south. the air remains very unstable and another storm will begin to drop in tomorrow bringing more rain and showers with isolated thunderstorms.
