injury and death.right now a rescue operation is underway. hello - i'm vicki liviakis. (steve) and i'm steve aveson.it all happened just outside a florida college campus... around 1:30 this afternoon at a busy road that connects the campus of florida international university with the city of sweetwater - west of miami. catherine heenan is here with the latest on what happened... (catherine) video from the scene shows the 950- ton bridge smashed and flattened...when it came down.....8 cars and trucks were trapped underneath... tonight we know that more than one person has been killed....but authorities haven't released a final number yet. and at least 10 others injured and hospitalized.. it was described as an "instant bridge" -- installed in just six hours on saturday. not yet open to foot traffic.. crews could be seen working with some of the injured... and some of the damaged cars were visible.... there was reportedly a red light when the bridge collapsed... other cars were completely trapped under the rubble... witnesses described the

shock of seeing it all happen...and one man told local reportersthat his friend is one of the victims.. man worried about friend --- my sister's friend called me. my childhood friend he was crossing as the bridge was coming downand it hit him. reporter - do you know how he's doing? i don't know, i don't know. i'm just so worried.. witness - i was just about to make a right turn just before the bridge and the whole thing just came down. after the whole thing broke, i was freaking out. (catherine) just five days ago - florida international university posted this video on its twitter page. updating the construction status of the new pedestrian bridge.... it was being put in at the request of students who said that crossing the busy road was often dangerous. that same saturday - county officials were full of praise for the project.

county commissioner - the design is incredible. it's going to be one of those game changers and it's fixed the stature in our community. but the most important thing about this is actually that the way it was built. it was built offsite and then it was moved to four o'clock in the morning and today you see what we have behind us. (catherine the construction company involved tweeted its shock at what happened...calling it a terrible tragedy. calling itself a family business and saying in part "....we are alldevastated and doing everything we can to assist. we will conduct a full investigation to determine exactly what went wrong and will cooperate with investigators on scene in every way." (catherine) tonight a u-c berkeley engineering professor says the decision to use the supposedly "innovative" installation was risky.. robert bea says while it's too early to know exactly what went wrong -- trying something new that crossed a highway was "a gamble." vicki and steve? we have just obtained the autopsy results for the shooter and victims of the deadly hostage situation at the veterans home in yountville on friday. all three victims died of gunshot wounds... the shooter albert wong took his own life with a self-inflicted gun shot wound one of the victims was pregnant. on monday a celebration of life is planned for the three pathway house employees killed.the event will take place at 6 pm at the lincoln theater in the napa valley performing arts center on the veterans home campus in yountville. (vicki) tracking the storm tonight as we face another day of rain in the bay area. this is a look at stormtracker four radar... showers are going to continue for most of the evening. (steve) here's a live look at bay area bridges tonight as the evening commute is under way. we are on our 4th day of rain in the bay area-- and it's not over yet. let's check in with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow with more on the timing. lawrence karnow: more rain and thunderstorms rolled through the bay area today. we had

some sunshine between the clouds but it remained cool with highs in the 50s. we've even see some snow on our local mountains. there are numerous showers on our doppler radar. thunderstorms with brief heavy downpours are possible. isolated hail and more snow over the mountains is likely tonight and tomorrow. on the satellite you can see the clouds moving in from the pacific. this is very unstable air and while the showers will be more scattered they will be heavy at times and can dump a lot of rain in a short amount of time. heavy snow is also forecast for the sierra with between 2 to 4 feet above 7,000 feet. it will be very difficult to travel there tonight with periods of whiteout conditions and slick roads. we will see more showers tomorrow with a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. highs will be cool and in the low to mid 50s. we could see a few left over shower on saturday before becoming partly cloudy and dry on sunday. warmer weather is forecast on monday but a warmer storm has potential to bring us much heavier rain toward the middle of next week.

(steve) more breaking news: christopher kohrs -- the s-f- p-d officer once known as the "hot cop of the castro," has been found guilty of of felony hit and run. kohrs had been accused of hitting two pederstrians in north beach back in 2015 and then leaving the scene. a passenger testified that kohrs was the designated driver that night and appeared to be sober at the time... but did not react fast enough. (vicki) and happening now: police looking for a driver after a school bus crash in

the south bay caused minor injuries this morning. it happened on northbound 101 near 880 in san jose around ten o'clock. police say the bus was driving in the right lane when a car hit the bus from behind. one student was able to get a photo of the vechile before it fled the scene. c-h-p officials say 32 children were on board at the time of the accident. four reported minor injuries and two were sent to the hospital. police are looking for the driver of a 2004 tan ford taurus with the license plate 8-b-e-j-91-6.plate 8-b-e-j-91- the license plate 8-b-e-j-91-6. (vicki) six people are injured after a muni bus and trolley car crashed in san francisco today. this is a picture from the san francisco fire department. the crash happened just after 10 this morning on market street. investigators say the bus rear-ended the trolley car while driving in the bus and taxi only lane. two of the people injured in the crash were transported to the hospital-- but are expected to be okay. (steve) oakland police are releasing new details that is shedding light on a bizarre

and tragic incident this morning at lake merritt where two people were killed.(vicki) police say they are investigating the death of one victim as a homicide, and while the other is being considered accidental.kron4's maureen kelly explains. 9-1-1 calls brought first responders to lakeshore drive just after 4am. witnesses advised of an altercation in the lake and then reported the witness believe they were drowning & needed assistance one woman who's apartment building overlooks the scene says she was one of the people who woke up with what sounded like two people possibly arguing.there was definitely some back-and-forth, but the loudest was somebody yelling help on arrival crews could see one man struggling in the lake.when pd arrived on scene they noticed there was a gentleman in the water who was thrashing in the water. they only noticed the gentleman. they went in they pulled him out. that man, now identified as 39 year old michael grace was given cpr but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. his death is being called an accident..but that's not the case with the second person pulled from the lake. fire department marine rescue crews were

joined by dive teams from both san francisco and alameda county and searched for the woman 9-1-1 callers heard screaming. a little after 6 am they located 24 tayana johnson 10 feet under water, 50 feet from shore. homicide investigators were called to the scene.they now say johnson and grace were in a dating relationship.because johnson showed signs of physical injuries.her death is being investigated as a homicide. today a woman who said she was related to the female victim came to the scene and threw a flower in the water.she wouldnt talk on camera but would only say she was a great mother to two little girls.maureen kelly kron4 news. tonight-- we are learning new information about the deputy and the community in mourning. kron 4's terisa estacio reports. marin county sheriff robert doyle. "as you can imagine this is a sad day, ryan zirkle was 24 years old, his 25 birthday, 11 days away." the marin county sheriff's department revealing the very sad news of the passing of deputy ryan zirkle. the deputy was in his patrol early this morning when he crashed into a tree... he had been responding to a 911 call out in point reyes where he was based. sheriff doyle. a 911 caller called in and said they heard a crash. since communications had not heard from him they sent his partner out and saw the crash, and found ryan. sheriff doyle says first responders did all they could. sheriff doyle. it took 35 minutes to get him out, hospital, they did all they could but he did not survive. while deputies are in mourning... we are learning much more about ryan zirkle. he was engaged to be married, had recently bought a home in petaluma with his fiance... he grew up in novato. mark. he was just great, great athelte. we are just in shock. again, sheriff doyle. ryan was enthusiastic, he wanted to serve the community he grew up in, always a smile on his face, always happy. in marin county te

"what i saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position. and he never went in."peterson not only failed to pursue the shooter, but told responding units to keep their distance. "broward do not approach this 12 or 1300 building stay at least 500 ft away at this point." in the cross hairs today as the department of motor vehicles conducted an undercover operation. the south bay... police at san jose state university are looking for more victims in connection with a sexual assault investigation. luis venegas is a fourth year student at san jose state. he was was arrested earlier this month for sexual assault. right now university police are working with three victims--- all male students who knew venegas. the most recent incident happened this month-- and other happened over the course of several years. police say the sexual assaults took place in campus residents halls. .. (vicki) campus police in cupertino will now wear body cameras. foothill-de anza community college police received a grant for the cameras from the department of justice. they are the only college police department to get the 27-thousand dollar grant. the body cameras are expected to help reduce officer force. most law enforcement agencies in santa clara county are now using body cameras. (steve) in the east bay... a busy road in san pablo is now reopen-- after a police chase and crash. it happened early this morning when c-h-p officers tried to

pull over a b-m-w s-u-v on interstate-80 near the powell street exit. the driver sped away.. leading officers onto city streets. officers stopped chasing the driver when he started driving recklessly. then moments later-- officers found the s-u-v after it hit several cars and a fire hydrant on san pablo dam road. the 24-year-old driver from oakland was taken to the hospital with major injuries. (steve) plesanton police have identified four juveniles wanted in connection to a fire started at a school. the small fire happened last month at walnut grove elementary school on harvest road. four juveniles were seen on surveillance video walking on the school's campus. police say the male in the grey adidads sweatshirt started the fire on one of the playground slides making it unusuable. (steve) in the north bay... the california department of public health is now warning people... not to eat recreationally harvested shellfish... in sonoma county. the agency put out this warning last week to marin

county. it includes oysters, clams, scallops and mussels. it is because recent samples detected a toxin in the shellfish. this warning is only for recreationally harvested shellfish. state- certified commercial shellfish are still safe to consume. (vicki) a homeless man who spent more than seven months in a san francisco jail... is now free after a federal judge objected to his 330-thousand dollar bail. james reem was awaiting trial on burglary and auto theft charges. but the judge ruled that unreliable evidence was used to set reem's bail so high. he also called his detention unconstitutional because the lower court judge failed to consider alternatives to bail. right now-- there is a bill in california to reform the state's money bail system-- to make sure people are not kept in jail because they cannot afford bail. it passed in the assembly, and is now up for consideration in the senate. joining me now to talk about bail

(sb 10 what is it?) - can judges make a determination that a person poses enough of a public risk that no bail amount will release them before trial?- jails are over- crowded. could courts process and release low-risk offenders quickly so they do not needlessly fill our jails? a homeless man who spent more than seven months in san francisco jail awaiting trial on burglary and auto theft charges is free after a federal judge objected to his $330,000 bail.u.s. district court judge charles breyer said this week a san francisco judge relied on unreliable evidence to keep 53-year-old james reem's bail at $330,000. breyer had previously ruled that reem's detention was unconstitutional because the san francisco judge failed to consider alternatives to bail. breyer later ruled that reem would have gone free if he had been wealthy, so his detention violated the constitution's equal protection clause.reem was released on tuesday.

health officials are taking the first step in a sweeping anti-smoking plan... they say it could make a huge difference in the number of people who smoke..(vicki) catherine heenan is here with the latest on their ambitious plan.. (catherine) america could become the first country in the world to force tobacco companiesto re-engineer their products.... the aim -- to drastically cut nicotine levels and make them far less addictive. the f-d-a says the plan could reduce the u.s. smoking rate from 15 percent of adults --- down to one percent. the agency today published its first formal notice to begin

(pam) in the east bay... a homicide investigation is now underway.... after two people were pulled from lake merritt this morning.(steve) kron4's maureen kelly reports, first responders were summonded to the scene by 9-1-1 callers who reported hearing the sounds of a fight taking place in the water. it was just after 4 am when people living around the lake say they heard the commotion of an altercation between a man and a woman.i heard some screaming, and helped sounded like someone hell yelling help first reponders arrived to find first a man trashing in the lake.officers responded to the scene. and observed one mail in the water, for officers jumped in the lake merritt to assist the subject, they pulled him out of the lake they started cpr on the

subject and he was transported to highland hospital where unfortunately he was pronounced that man, now identified as 39 year old michael grace was given cpr but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. his death is being called an accident..but that's not the case with the second person pulled from the lake. fire department marine rescue crews were joined by dive teams from both san francisco and alameda county and searched for the woman 9-1-1 callers heard screaming. a little after 6 am they located 24 tayana johnson 10 feet under water, 50 feet from shore. homicide investigators were called to the scene.they now say johnson and grace were in a dating relationship.because johnson showed signs of physical injuries.her death is being investigated as a homicide. a woman who says she is related to the female victim, known as bones....and threw a flower in the water. she wouldnt talk on camera but would only say she was a great mother to two little girls. maureen kelly kron4 news.

in january... six former and current women inmates -- some who were pregnant -- filed a lawsuit alleging abuses against the sheriff's office. as kron four's philippe djegal reports -- the sheriff's office denies the allegeations. (philippe)debbie johnston/mothe r- "i think the public needs to be aware -- we pay for this jail. we pay for these people.and they need to be held to a certain standard of care." a jury-trial could happen as early as may. this after a federal judge tabled the plaintiff's motion for a preliminary injunction -- asking for more medical information. the plaintiff's wanted to have the remaining pregnant women at the santa rita jail in dublin transferred to more comfortable conditions.debbe johnston/mother- "i believe in the justice system. i believe if you do something wrong, you should be punished -- i'm not advocating. but there has to be some humanity." debbie johnston has taken interest in this case... after her 22- year-old daughter was arrested earlier this month and booked into santa rita. her

is the battle cry of a crack down on people who are fraudulently using disabled person parking placards. kron four's rob fladeboe reports now on how it went as anunder cover enforcement crew staked out the parking lot of a busyshopping center in san jose. i'm here at the costco store on almaden expressway in south san jose. it's a bust pace and the competition for parking can be fierce. there are about fifteen spaces right up front that are reserved for people withdisabled parking placards. so you can imagine it was the ideal place for the department of motor vehicles to conduct an undercover enforcement operation to make sure people have valid placards. the crack down is designed to gain compliance and raise public awareness about compliance efforts. in twenty such operations conducted around the state last month the dmv issued about 150 citations to people fraudulently using disabled parking placards. here's more from the dmv's jaime garcia.

struggling to resume life as normal after a friends dog bit her nose clean off. the girl says she was petting the family dog when it turned on her. she says when she tried to get up... the dog latched onto her nose. the girl says as she tried to pull away... the dog bit down harder... then began to shake her nose. the girl was hospitalized for several days... and has been to numerous doctor's appointments since the attack. her mother says it is difficult to see her daughter go through something like this.girl's mother: "i never expected this could happen in a million years. i just dont understand. it's hard to keep it together for her." authorities say the dog that bit the girl has been quarantined and the owner has been cited. the girl's family does not know how many procedures she will have to undergo to reconstruct her nose. the community is raising money to help the family pay for medical bills.
