and the suspect. a juvenile was also injured. ( robin )police are still investigating this shooting... so far a motive is unknown. ( robin )those victims of that shooting were transported to san francisco's general hospital... right now 4 of them are still there including the police officer. we're told he is in fair condition after being shot in the leg. san francsico's mayor... mark farrell... stopped by the hospital to pay him a visit... and show his support. police say..since the suspect is in custody... there is no ongoing threat to the community.... and as part of
4:07 am
their efforts to be more transparent.. they will have a town hall meeting about this incident within the next 10 days. ( robin )kron-4 was first to tell you about this officer involved shooting. we sent a push alert at 4:56 p.m wednesday. you can stay connected on breaking news by downloading our free mobile app. and enabling push alerts. ( robin )in hayward... family and friends are mourning the loss of a.j. faroqi (far-u- key). the brentwood father was gunned down in his car early sunday morning and the suspects are still on the loose. sheriff's officials say they believe he was the victim of an attempted car-jacking or robbery outside a hookah lounge where the victim often went. kron 4's ali reid went to a vigil held for that man last night... and spoke to his loved ones. comforting each other ... while keeping their friend's memory alive.i know this one hit people pretty hardajmal far-oqi or 'aj' as he's
4:08 am
lovingly called ... celebrated his 39th birthday last tuesday, and was out for an extended celebration saturday night when tragedy struck. everyone's truly overwhelmed and heartbroken. everyone's still truly devastated. it's unbearable to recognize this is a reality for us.aj was shot by the hookah lounge on mission and tried getting away. he lost consciousness a block later where his car came to a stop. this is still an ongoing investigation, but sheriff's deputies believe the shooting could have resulted from an attempted car burglary while a-j was leaving the lounge early sunday morning. he was such a loved person, from the afghan community to the sf community to the mortgage and finance world. he's just a very loved guy let alone he was the only son in his family. so this is just truly a heartbreaking scenario. the loving husband and father of 2 is described as having a
4:09 am
heart of gold. friends, associates, and family members from different cities in the u-s and globally are heading to the bay area to mourn with a-j's family.he never said no to people. he was that person, through financial hardships, emotional hardships, if you saw aj, aj would put a smile on your face.standupa gofund me account has been set up to support a-j's family.so far it has raised more than 42- thousand dollars.his funeral will be held tomorrow.... reporting live in hayward ... ali reid .... kron 4 news ( robin ) a package thief is caught on surveillance camera... snatching boxes in front of a home in cupertino. this happened tuesday afternoon on calvert drive near stevens creek boulevard. the homeowner says the boxes were dropped off just an hour before they were stolen. video shows the thief getting out of a black sedan -- grabbing the packages... and handing them over to his passenger... before driving away. the homeowner says the packages were for his son.
4:10 am
the homeowner says he installed the camera as a precautionary measure.. and he says this is the first time his packages have been stolen. ( robin )we're learning more about the suspect in the deadly texas bombings. authorities say 23-year-old ámark anthony condittá blew himself up as police closed in on his location. although the suspect is dead... many like former f.b.i agent rick smith... wonder why conditt did it. kron 4's j.r. stone reports. 23 year old mark anthony conditt is beleved to be responsible for at least five explosions that killed two and injured five others in texas. police say conditt's confession was found on his cell phone. sot i'm not sure what this person's motive was but obvioulsy it was terror he was able to terrorize austin. that's former f-b-i agent and current private investigator rick smith who works in san francisco. smith says the evidence was likely building as bombs continued to be sent
4:11 am
out.sot there's receipts there's internet postings there's eyewitness sketchings there's video...also a lot of people working.smith says conditt's decision to go inside a fedex location to send the packages likely made the difference in authorities getting to him. especially seeing that he had gloves on, a baseball cap, and was wearing a blonde wig.sot once he went into the fedex store the timing of it the description the previous witnesses....that was probably the key part of the case...it was a mistake.as to the motive, that is unknown. according to police conditt did not talk about that in his 25 minute confession video. there is also nothing on the surface that would indicate he
4:12 am
was upset about something.sot it's a cowardly thing to do you're sending a package to blow somebody up and you're not there, there's no eye contact...you just want to hurt somebody and you want to do it again which then spreads terror. ( robin )neighbors who knew conditt and his family say they are shocked... but smith tells kron 4 that often times... neighbors don't know the people living next to them... as well as they think they do. ( robin )in the north bay... sonoma county emergency services are keeping a close eye on creeks in the areas devestated by the north bay firestorm. kron4's maureen kelly shows us how they're watching for signs of potential flash flooding and mudslides. what's being called an atmospheric river was just making it's presence felt today in sonoma county....and while the storm is not expected to pack as much as punch up north as it is in the central coast....that doesn't mean the county's emergency services here is dropping their guard.we're still taking
4:21 am
this very seriously. it's probably the single most rainfall producing storm we're going to see yet this winter since the fireside signs have been posted warning residents that this is a high risk area....the burn areas being more subceptible to flash flooding, mudslides and debris flow.it that end they've surrounded property lines with straw wattles to keep man made materials and silt from getting into the watershed.....and quite a lot of itwe put in 47 miles of walls around homes that i've been demolished orla roadways. we put out 93 miles of hydro seed along the right-of-way's in the county. that's the green spray that contain seeds that grows in the grasses. they've also installed two dozen weather stations to give real time information to the national weather service.so were most concerned about just monitoring what's going on our watershed. is the soil moving? how the creeks performing?for those looking to rebuild like this farmer in the wikiup bridgeway area outside santa rosa....the rain means just more delays.we got a lot done in february when the weather
4:22 am
was nice but the cleanup wasn't done so we can do a whole. so now the cleanup is done now the rain is gonna pretty much limit what we can dothe county has crews coming out to visually inspect places like this creek here to make sure that it is flowing that it's not too muddy that there are big pieces of debris clogging it up. they don't want to see any flooding to create more problems maureen kelly kron4 news ( robin )four your health this morning... a new study by harvard researchers says recent mumps outbreaks in the u-s are linked to waning vaccine protection. the m-m-r vaccine is given in two doses to children and protects against the measles, mumps and rubella. researchers said lab studies show that protection against mumps is shorter than the measles or rubella portion. the vaccine is effective on average 27 years, but that can vary for each individual. according to the c-d-c, mumps starts with a fever, muscle
4:23 am
aches, and swollen salivary glands and often spread by coughing and sneezing. ( robin ) anemia is being linked to a higher risk of death.... in pregnant women. research published in a british medical journal.. shows a relationship between severe anemia and maternal death. anemia is when a person has a very low, red blood cell count. pregnant women are more prone to the condition ... because they provide nutrients for their babies and themselves. the study used information from 29- countries collected by the world health organization. the results indicated... the odds of maternal death... doubled in mothers with anemia, when all other contributing factors were controlled. ( robin )in the north bay... a small business owner says two people stole thousands of dollars in merchandise... after telling a fake story

about helping north bay fire victims. kron 4's justine waldman explains. it looks like a normal purchase as a store employee, helps these two customers leave with over $7,000 in generators. but this video, according to the owner of reed's trailers sale in petaluma, captures a crime in progress. ann reed sot "when you have someone be that deceptive to take advantage of you right on the heels of our being so generous it is particularly insulting."owner ann reeds tells kron 4 , since the north bay fires in october the store has sold about 100 rvs to fire victims at wholesale prices. as a way to help their sonoma county neighbors devastated by the destruction. so when a person placed an order over the phone in late january for several of these thousand dollar generators, cables and oil cans claiming they were for food trucks used to raise money for fire victims, the small business was happy to
4:37 am
accommodate. sot they needed 8 of these generators to power their food trucks logical makes senseat the time, nothing seemed suspicious when the caller used two credit card numbers. rick springer sot we did everything the way we were supposed to be the credit cards ran throughnow, months later the credit card companies have declined the transactions. because the cards used, were stolen from fire victims.leaving reeds out thousands of dollars and questioning the good in people. sot it is the lowest of low i thinkperhaps feeling sorry about the sob story the generators were to help fire victims, the sonoma county sheriff's office says the store cashier did not check the ids of the two people who came in to pick up the order. sot i am not happy with these folks but it wont change how we do businessthe sheriff's office has traced the phone number used to make the original order, and hopes, just like the people at reed's with the suspects pictures now out there they will get caught.in petaluma justine waldman kron 4 news

( robin )new video this morning of that deadly self -driving crash... involving a self-driving uber in phoenix. we want to warn you... it is graphic. police released this video ... showing the s-u-v hitting a pedestrian, as she walked her bicycle across a dark street. the s-u-v's lights did not reflect on the woman... until a second or two before impact.it down for you to see. the video is raising questions about
4:50 am
whether the vehicle could have stopped in time. it also shows the backup driver... looking downward for several seconds before the crash. the driver then looked up... and appeared startled in the last moment. the crash was the first death involving a fully autonomous test vehicle. ( robin )the national transportation safety board has now launched an investigation into that deadly crash on sunday. questions remain on who's legally responsible for the accident. angie koehle reports. angie koehle:"if you or i break a traffic law, we get a ticket. so what if the car has no driver? who gets the fine for the infraction?"james arrowood:"there are two different positions, either of which could be right."valley attorney james arrowood studies driverless car technology and the law.he says unfortunately - a crash was bound to happen because technology isn't foolproof. james arrowood:"the good news out of this particular tragedy is we will have more information than we have ever had in an auto accident. we'll have sensors, we'll have
4:51 am
cameras. we'll have visuals, we'll have everything."but when it comes to liability - arrowood says our governor's executive order requires driverless cars to follow the same rules of the road as you and i - and more.james arrowood:"it specifies that if a company operates an autonomous vehicle it has to comply with all of the traffic safety laws in addition to extra parameters for autonmous vehicles."meaning no driver - does not mean no fine.james arrowood:"so if one of the autonomous vehicles were to be speeding then uber would get a ticket for speeding."arrowood says where it gets cloudy is the civil liability.currently - a plaintiff could go after a driver - the car maker - maybe a company like the tire manufacturer.james arrowood: "you had a limited universe. now with autonomous vehicles we don't know how deep that universe goes. for instance could the municipality, could the government have some responsibility for either permitting those cars on the road or for not having sensors in place that cross-coordinate with street signs, for instance."arrowood said although the tempe crash is a tragedy - the public has to
4:52 am
remember the technology isn't perfect or magical and it's virtually impossible to avoid every collision.the goal is to ááreduce injuries and death." james arrowood:"a lot of information we don't know yet."
