(philippe) crushed during the collision... this tesla sedan barely recognizable... after slamming into the median on southbound highway 101 near the highway 85 flyover... . flipping in the air and then hit by two other cars on the landing . ofc. art montial/chp- "the entire vehicle caught on fire. so, it pretty much was fully engulfed." the california

highway patrol says the driver of the tesla... a man in his early thirties... was pulled out of the car by witnesses. he was taken to stanford medical center where he later died. officer art montiel says the two other drivers involved were not seriously hurt. he says it's unclear why the tesla lost control... but that investigators are looking into it.ofc. art montiel/chp- "we have seen in the past as people are traveling southbound on 101, on the left lane, which is gonna be the one that's gonna be the flyover to state route 85 southbound and suddenly, they try to change lanes and go into the, uh, to try to stay on the 101 southbound." the c-h-p says because the battery of the electric tesla was exposed... officers chose to wait until tesla engineers showed up and checked the car battery to determine if it was safe or not to move. the fear was that the car might explode. ofc. art montiel/chp- "all the other vehicles they have their batteries, you know, that's usually not an issue, uh, but because we don't know too much about tesla batteries, that's why we contacted tesla." initially, the c-h-p says the tesla engineers determined the battery was 70-percent charged

and needed to be weakened before the car could be taken away. just after 2-15 in the afternoon... about five hours after the crash... the battery was deemed safe. in mountain view philippe djegal, kron four news. (grant) el camino real in santa clara is now open after a deadly crash. it happened early this morning between harrison and lafayette streets. no other cars were involved in the crash. you can see the car crashed over a barrier at the mission inn. the road was closed for several hours as police investigated the crash and removed the car. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. (catherine) a fire in berkeley shut down an area around virginia street today.. tonight.... traffic is back to normal. it happened at a heating oil business.. this is cell- phone video from a viewer - showing smoke coming from the building. railroad tracks

outside to a wrecked car yesterday morning. he immediately ran over to his neighbors house who has a surveillance camera facing the street. now they are working to enhance the video quality to figure out what kind of car the suspect was driving.. and hopefully catch whoever is responsible. (grant) investigators in castro valley need your help finding laptop thief... who was caught on camera. this woman is running with a laptop she just stole from another woman... who was sitting in a starbucks. and while some snatch and grab robbers get away...this time was different. the victim chases down the woman... catching up to her just in time as the get- away car pulls up. the victim was able to wrestle her laptop back. police are

still searching for the thief. (catherine) on the peninsula... a man and woman were attacked and robbed while waiting at a bus stop with their children. it happened last night at the corner of linden and california avenues in south san francisco. police say three masked robbers came up to the family... one of them holding a knife. they demanded money from the father - who refused. he was punched in the face and knocked to the ground. the woman had jewelry stolen - and they took the man's wallet. police are still looking for the suspects tonight. (steve) a deadly fiery crash along the southbay caused a major back-up along highway 101 earlier today. the accident happened just before 9-30 in the morning at 101 near the highway 85 carpool flyover in mountain view. but the scene wasn't cleared until more than five hours later. an electric tesla sedan was involved in the collision... and, as kron four's philippe djegal reports... law enforcement postponed towing the car until they were certain it was safe to do so. (philippe) tesla engineers were called to the scene of the deadly crash to survey the damage... and, determine if the battery of the electric tesla that caused the collision was in jeopardy of possibly exploding if moved. ofc. art montiel/chp- "mainly because it was a tesla battery. the size of the

batteries." the crash was reported just before 9-30 in the morning. the tesla engineers showed up about three hours later. initially, the california highway patrol says tesla determined the battery was still 70-percent charged and needed to be weakened. by 2-15 in the afternoon -- the engineers gave the go-ahead to remove the car.ofc. art montiel/chp- "all the other vehicles they have their batteries, you know, that's usually not an issue, uh, but because we don't know too much about tesla batteries, that's why we contacted tesla." officer art montiel says the driver of the tesla was in the carpool lane, headed southbound on 101 when he lost control, hit the median near the highway 85 flyover and flipped in the air. two cars collided with the tesla on the way down. montiel says only the driver of the tesla -- a man in his thirties -- was taken to stanford medical center, where he was pronounced dead.ofc. art montiel/chp- "we've been talking to -- to witnesses and we're going to put everything together and then compile our investigation." the accident caused a miles long back-up for several hours. in mountain view, philippe djegal, kron four news.

(pam) in the south bay... el camino real in santa clara is now open after a deadly crash. it happened early this morning between harrison and lafayette streets. no other cars were involved in the crash. you can see the car crashed over a barrier at the mission inn. the road was closed for several hours... as police investigated the crash and removed the car. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. (steve) in the east bay. traffic is back to normal on virginia street in berkeley ... after a two- alarm fire shut down most of the surrounding area this morning. it happened at the 'hanson aggregates berkeley asphalt and ready mix' building. firefighters say, authorities shutdown railroad tracks near the building for safety reasons. nearby streets were also closed -- but the fourth street shopping area was not affected by the fire. the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
